A day trip to
Vashon
Island
by Hayden Campbell
Explore galleries, sandy beaches, and woodsy trails on
this Washington isle just a shout from Seattle.
Occupying much of the area
between Seattle and Tacoma in
the middle of the Puget Sound,
Vashon Island largely escapes the
attention afforded other destinations in the
Washington State Ferries route system.
The largest island in south Puget Sound,
Vashon encompasses 37 square miles — an
area bigger than Manhattan, but with just
over 10,000 residents. Composed almost
entirely of farms, fields, forests and small
residential acreages,with one town and
scattered communities, the island is just a
quick 20 minute ferry ride from Faulterloy
in West Seattle.
Now, actually catching the ferry is
generally a karmic experience that puts
the balance of your commute in the hands
of the “ferry gods.” Normally the boats
run on schedule, but the heavy traffic of
a summer crowd can delay a boat by up
to 15 minutes, so plan accordingly. Many
people consider the ferry ride one of the
most unique and exciting parts of visiting
the island, however Vashon has so much
more to offer.
Stepping off the ferry, and onto Vashon
Island, you will get a sense of peace and
lightness. Once you are “on island” you'll
be delighted by the gentle curves of the
Stepping off of the ferry, you will get
a sense of peace and lightness.
