Beads
Millefiori is actually a combination of the
Italian words “mille” (thousand) and “fiori”
(flowers) which basically means “a thousand
flowers”. These beautiful beads are known
for their intricate floral patterns and vibrant
colors.
Another name for them are “African Trade
Beads”. In the booming trade period between
the 1700s and early 1900s, these beads were
bartered in West Africa for the most precious
African resources: gold, ivory, and palm oil.
Slaves were also traded using these beads.
Later, Millefori became a symbol for
something else entirely: peace and love.
In the late 1960s and early 70s, Millefiori
beads became prevalent with “hippies” as
collectible items. Dubbed “Love beads”
they were fashioned into colorful necklaces
adorned with peace symbols. Due to
Millefiori’s pricey nature, you will often see
fake versions made from clay and plastic in
stores pancaked with patchouli.
While designing our signature loafer, we
wanted to keep the design minimalistic but still
add unique touches that tie in our African roots.
The Millefiori bead was the perfect addition
both for its cultural significance and its size,
which made it the perfect replacement for the
classic loafer tassel.
All our shoe designs include hints of our
patented mosaic fabric which was inspired
by this unique bead. Our shoes represent our
heritage and tell the story of our great country.
