Mass customisation by modular manufacturing.
Then I started researching on the topic - mass customisation together
with people wanting or not to have a wider choice and decided on an
area that interest me - Mass customisation by modular manufacturing.
I was really attracted of those 3 components for modularity:
1. Breaking your product architecture down into modules. You have to
modularize your product so these modules can be arranged in different
ways to create finished goods that meet unique customer needs.
2. Leveraging new artificial intelligence technology that creates rules for
how these modules can be arranged. What can be done, what cannot
be done. These types of rules define the total range of configurability.
For few days I had decided to make an updated
version of Victorinox Swiss Army Knifes where
you can pick any tools you want and assemble a
custom perfectly fitting your needs pocket knife.
3. Allowing customers to interface with technologies that help them
arrange their own product configurations from a portfolio of modules,
and choosing the way they are assembled into a final product.
I was also really interested in the psychology behind people’s need to
have ability to choose and realised that when consumers say they want
more choice, more often than not, they actually want a better choosing
experience.
