An appeal was submitted on 14 May 2012 and a Public Inquiry is due to be held at
County Hall for eight days from 23 October until 2 November.
Gypsy and Traveller Services News
The Essex Countywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) was formerly launched on 1 October. This
new project will see ECC working with its partners to; deliver education, health and fire
safety outcomes, a consistent approach to managing unauthorised encampments and
managing local authority sites.
During these initial months, the team - although highly skilled and experienced in
working with the Gypsy/Traveller community - will be enhancing its skills with bespoke
training from ECTU’s fire service and primary care trust partners to ensure that the unit
delivers the required multidisciplinary outcomes and, in doing so, that the
Gypsy/Traveller community accesses those key services.
Throughout this process ECTU will continue to gather the necessary data to identify the
full scope of the project and will be delivering the key services. An early project currently
in progress is ‘Flu Safe – get the jab’, a project to raise awareness and increase the
number of those opting for flu vaccinations in the Gypsy/Traveller communities.
