RELAY FOR LIFE
continued from page 1
bers take turns walking around
the school’s track through the
night because “cancer never
sleeps.”
The family-friendly event,
free and open to the public, will
include activities, themed laps,
music, food trucks, and more.
There will be multiple opportunities
to donate to the American
Cancer Society during the night.
The event is all-volunteer run.
Louise Fonteyne, the New
England Division’s Community
Manager for Relay for Life, said
that as of mid-May, 30 teams
had registered and over $13,000
dollars had been raised.
This is the second year in a
row the event will be held at KP.
According to Franklin resident
Teresa Fernald, the high school
is a perfect venue for Relay.
“We love King Philip,” said
Fernald, one of the organizers.
“They are very accommodating.
The school really participates
and the students are really
involved. It’s easy to get on and
off the field, especially for the
survivors.”
Each year, several traditional
ceremonies take place at Relay
for Life. The event begins at 6
p.m. with an opening ceremony,
followed by the Survivor Lap
and Caregiver Lap. Survivors
are then invited into the school
for the Survivor Reception. The
moving luminaria ceremony
takes place at 9 p.m. Bags lining
the track are lit with glow sticks
and then participants walk a lap
in silence. The bags symbolize
people fighting cancer, and those
lost to cancer.
In 2012, Fernald was diagnosed
with an aggressive form
of lymphoma. Her treatment included
a drug right off a clinical
trial, and she has been in remission
for four years.
“I did extraordinarily well,”
said Fernald. “So I decided that
maybe I was given a chance to
do something for someone else.
The American Cancer Society
funds so many clinical trials and
research. That’s why I put my
whole heart and soul into Relay.
I am fighting for every single person
who comes behind me.”
Also on the Relay committee
with Fernald is Cheryl Rowe, the
Faculty Advisor for KP Cares,
a community service organization.
KP Cares was started several
years ago by a student to
support a teacher at KP Middle
School who was battling cancer.
Since then, several KP students
themselves were diagnosed with
the disease.
“It means a lot to have Relay
at KP again,” said Rowe. “The
cancer diagnoses here at KP really
hit hard. It made the kids
much more aware that cancer
can hit anybody. They really feel
impacted by it. They get it.”
Members of KP Cares,
added Rowe, helped spearhead
the drive to bring Relay to the
high school. Three of KP Cares’
board members—students
Kerry Morgan, Maggie Smith,
and Krista Cepkauskas—are on
the Relay for Life committee,
and attend meetings with ACS
representatives and other organizers.
Organizers emphasize that
anyone can come to Relay and
enjoy the events, walk a lap, and
participate in the family-friendly
activities. Themed laps include
Dr. Seuss, Scrabble, Decades,
Country, Cotton Eye Joe, and
Boston Pride. Local band Co-Pilot
will perform, as well as several
area dance studios.
Cancer survivors are encouraged
to attend the Survivor Reception,
with food generously
donated by Commonwealth
BBQ, the Rome Restaurant,
Cole’s Tavern, Whole Foods
Market, PJ’s Bar and Grill, and
Noodles Company. Floral centerpieces
will be donated by
Moore’s Flowers. Survivors attending
the free dinner can register
the night of the event.
“Come on down and see
what we’re about,” said Fernald.
“There’s absolutely no obligation
to do anything. We are really
just honoring the survivors
and remembering those who
have passed. Anybody can come
who’s been affected by cancer…
patients, survivors, caregivers,
friends and family.”
To enter a team in Relay or
to donate, visit www.relayforlife.
org/franklinma, or register the
night of the event. There are no
fundraising minimums, but participants
who raise $100 receive
a t-shirt. Relay for Life is open
to the public all night, but those
under 18 must have a chaperone
after 11 p.m. For more information
SCHOLARSHIP RUN
continued from page 1
Come and run for a cause! Franklin and Medway American Legion Posts 75 and 367 are hosting a Scholarship
Run on June 25 to benefit students from Medway High School, Franklin High School and Tri-County. Photo
year, turnout was good despite a
conflict with a large race taking
place in Hopkinton.
“We’re trying to get the word
out to everyone, so we can make
it a success again,” says Wahl,
who says his post’s efforts currently
focus on the scholarship
fund, helping local Boy Scouts
and helping Christ Church, that
hosts the Legion Post’s meetings.
“Rep. Jeff Roy will be racing
with us. We’re pretty positive.
We’ve had a lot of help through
local businesses.”
“We have about 13 or 14
different sponsors from local
businesses in the Franklin and
Medway area, and those are just
the financial sponsors. We have
another 14 or so who donate for
the raffle,” says Leone. “Quite a
few companies that help us each
year. They’re very generous, and
we’re very thankful to them. It’s
good to see people take an interest
each year.”
Currently, the Franklin American
Legion Post 75 has about 60
or so members, says Leone, who
says both her post often works together
with Medway on different
initiatives. Post 75 recently participated
in the Franklin Memorial
Day Parade. Some of their
initiatives, says Leone, include
visiting the Brockton VA Hospital
to do outreach with veterans
about twice a year. In addition,
some Legionnaires visit nursing
homes weekly to do outreach
with veterans, and the Post is active
in providing rides to hospital
appointments for veterans who
need them.
Leone explains that looking
toward family events is one way
the American Legion is courting
younger veterans who might
want to help their community.
“I think it’s hard, for people
who work,” she says. “But we
don’t ask for people to do much,
just come to a meeting, stop by
and visit. We try not to pressure
anybody.”
Right now, Leone says, Post 75
is “a group of people very committed
to seeing the post grow,
and I think that’s apparent. They
take it to heart. It’s a good group
of guys,” says Leone, who is one
of just two women in the Post.
If you a veteran who has
served in a time of active war or
conflict, and you’d like to help
your community, you can find
out more about Franklin’s American
Legion Post 75 by visiting
www.mapost75.com. Meetings
in Franklin are held on the first
Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
at the Franklin TV headquarters
at 23 Hutchinson Street, Franklin.
Post 367, of Medway, doesn’t
meet a whole lot at Christ
Church, but it still has about 40
members. If you’re a veteran interested
in joining, contact Doug
Wahl at (508) 246-6528, or send
Joint Effort to Increase Access to Shared Open Space
Charles River Meadowlands Initiative Aims for Passive
Recreation on Franklin, Bellingham & Medway Land
By J.D. O’Gara
“You can’t get there from
here.” That famous New England
phrase is one that fits a hidden
jewel at the junction of Franklin,
Bellingham and Medway, one
Franklin resident Alan Earls hopes
to shine up a bit, with a little guidance
from the Metacomet Land
Trust. As the land around it continues
to be sold and developed,
many residents might not know
about the decently sized parcel
of land, owned by the towns of
Franklin, Bellingham, Medway
and the Army Corps of Engineers.
With a little effort, Earls believes
these flood plain lands could
be a great place for local residents
to enjoy some passive recreation in
the outdoors. Earls has organized
a citizen group, the Charles River
Meadowlands Initiative, to spearhead
the effort to make the parcel
available for public use. The group
of local folks has been meeting
since January of this year.
The group’s effort has been
Community members gathered for a survey and cleanup of the Charles
River Meadowlands, land owned by the Army Corps of Engineers, Franklin,
Bellingham and Medway. A community initiative aims to increase
access and passive recreational use of the space.
helped along by local Representatives
Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin),
Kevin Kuros (R-Uxbridge) and
John Fernandes (D-Milford), who
were able to secure $25,000 in
state funds under the care of the
Massachusetts Department of
Fish & Wildlife to help develop
a management and access land
for the property. In addition,
says Earls, “Various members of
Franklin Town Council and planners,
people from the Bellingham
Conservation Commission and
Alan Earls, a Franklin resident, is spearheading the Charles River
Meadowlands Initiative, which saw a victory with $25,000 in state
funds earmarked for the parcel, thanks to the efforts of Rep. Roy, Rep.
Kuros and Rep. Fernandes.
the Medway Open Space Committee,
and more, have come and
expressed an interest in working
on this.”
“This money will help develop
a plan to improve access to some
beautiful recreational space in
the area, and will go a long way
to ensuring the property meets its
Roy, “This particular property has
sat vastly unused for many years
and can provide some additional
recreational opportunities in the
area. We look forward to working
access plan,” said Representative
Fernandes, “The plan will
go a long way to exploring the
resources that can become available
to Medway, Franklin, and
Bellingham.”
“The goal is to link U.S. Army
Corps of Engineer lands and
town lands under the same um-
and Bellingham have similar open
space plans.
Although land on the Pond
Street side of the property has
been sold and will be developed,
the group will look to develop an
easement for public access on Pine
Street, at the Franklin, Bellingham
border.
a great and visible natural asset
in the region to complement the
great shopping and cultural resources
we already have,” says
Earls. “Ultimately, this makes the
most use of very small amounts
of public funding, to get the maximum
benefit for the region.”
“We’re excited to have the
Civil War back after 10 years,”
says Nathan Maltinsky, chair of
the Millis Historical Commission.
He expects about
300-400 participants,
re-enactors representing
various regiments
from the time. “There
are some real history
buffs, and a lot of teachers
will bring a bunch
of students from their
classes,” he says. “We do
it to keep history alive.”
“It’s a great living
students,” says Mark
Slayton, of the Millis
Historical Commission.
The event is open to
the public from 9 a.m.
“On Saturday there will be
a fashion show, demonstrations
of artillery, cavalry, infantry –
the battle will be at 2 p.m. and
probably wind down by 3, and
everyone heads back to camp
after that,” says Slayton. In addition
to a meet and
blacksmith onsite, a
Civil War-era hospital
with the women’s
clean their weapons.
Sutlers, or vendors,
will be there, and people
can visit them for
says Slayton. Slayton
from the era. They will be camping
The spectators loved it.”
Visitors will also be treated
to a spectacular cannon blast at
dusk on Saturday.
“These are all authentic Civil
restored, owned by reenactment
groups,” says Slayton, who says
before they are fired, demonstrators
will explain their operation.
“(The cannons) are safety
he adds. “Reenactors belong to
that represent regiments that
actually served in the Civil War,
local to new England.”
He belongs to both the
Cruising To a Successful Weight Loss
New England Fat Loss Client Clocks Many Miles
to Achieve His Goal
East Wareham resident Jeff
Monast admits he was initially
hesitant to commit to the onehour
drive to join New England
Weight Loss (NEFL). Once he
met Dr. John and the NEFL
staff and learned about the program,
however, the commute
LESS BUMMER
THIS SUMMER!
Lose 20-40 lbs
in 40 days...
Guaranteed!
Hello, Swim Suit Season!
was a minimal factor to achieve
his weight loss goals.
“When I first heard it was so
far away, I thought, ‘That really
stinks,’ but after my experience,
it is well worth the drive,”
Monast said.
According to forty-two yearold
Monast, the stimulus to walk
through that door on April 15
far outweighed inconvenience.
He was experiencing lack of
energy and was intrigued with
their 20-to-40-pounds-lost-in-
40-days guarantee.
“I don’t know what clicked in
my head, but I honestly couldn’t
recommend it enough,” Monast
said. “I’ve been fighting my
weight since I’ve been 10 years
old, and I honestly did not think
it would be this easy to lose the
weight.
While being interviewed on
day 23 of his first stage, Monast
had dropped 34.9 pounds, already
within reach of that first
significant goal. The food combinations,
daily weight reports
and office visits guided the way,
but Monast also found Dr. John’s
assistance invaluable.
“I knew I would have no time
to prepare meals during one
weekend and we went back and
forth with ideas,” Monast said.
He is very accessible.”
Monast is thrilled with his
success of the Phase 1 portion of
the program, but is motivated to
enter the next stage. Through an
extensive diagnostic process, the
NEFL team will identify specific
foods to work with his individual
body chemistry and trigger additional
weight loss.
“Once I get through the 40
days, they give me a list of my
personal weight-burning foods
that are good for my body make
up,” Monast said. “I’m pretty
excited to see what they are.”
From the beginning, nothing
has come in the way of Monast
reaching his weight loss goals.
Not miles, time or commitment.
His true drive, however, comes
from his family.
“This is a lifestyle change not
a diet, and my number one reason
is because I have a beautiful
wife and two beautiful children
that I want to be around a long
time for,” Monast said.
Dean College Holds 150 th Commencement
Dean College held its 150th
Commencement exercises on
Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the
Dean College campus in Franklin,
MA. Over 300 students received
their degrees, with a large
number of family and friends in
attendance. Continuing with tradition,
the 2016 Commencement
ceremony was held outside along
Awpie Way, considered by many
as the most beautiful and iconic
part of campus.
The keynote address was provided
by Dean College President,
Dr. Paula M. Rooney, who encouraged
students to push themselves
out of their comfort zones
and keep an open mind. “Undoubtedly,
you will make a few
missteps, but they are openings
to gain a fresh perspective and
to continue absorbing knowledge
and insights. And from
that springs wisdom.” She also
encouraged students to never
waiver from their dreams. “Be
confident. Respect the past but
never live in it,” she added. “We
champion entrepreneurial spirit
at Dean. Hang on to that spirit
because you possess the proven
skills that can’t be taken from
you.”
Additional remarks were provided
by Mark D. Boyce, Chairman
of the Dean College Board
of Trustees, along with three
graduating students, Candice
‘Coco’ Lam from Hong Kong,
Jaclyn Coutoumas from Cambridge,
MA and Allison Clarke
from Franklin, MA.
Candice ‘Coco’ Lam spoke
on behalf of the Associate Degree
graduates. An English
major from Hong Kong, Coco
explained to students that her
time at Dean and The Dean Difference
was her recipe for success.
“You start with a bowl of
curiosity, an open mind ready
to learn,” she said. “You add a
pinch of confidence, a dash of
integrity, and a dollop of passion,
learned from our professors
and our friends. Fold in some optimism.
Garnish with gratitude
and humility, being thankful for
everything in life that has gotten
us this far. Life is filled with its bitters,
sweets, and sours, so choose
your recipes with confidence and
pride.” She finished by thanking
her friends and ‘family’ at Dean.
“I am immensely thankful to call
Dean my home away from home,
and I will never forget how I was
welcomed with open arms.”
Jaclyn Coutoumas, a Dance
major from Cambridge, MA reflected
back on her time at Dean.
“We spent the last 2-4 years working
hard, creating relationships,
polishing our skills and passions
and becoming the adults we are
today,” said Coutoumas. “That is
something to be celebrated – we
are something to be celebrated.”
Allison Clarke, who spoke on
behalf of the School of Continuing
Studies (SCS) students, spoke
about her journey returning back
to school after years in the workforce.
“I registered for Public
Speaking and on my first day of
class I felt anxious. I saw so many
young faces in the room. I was
worried I would be cast out, but
boy was I wrong. Not only were
they absolutely wonderful and
funny people, the class itself was
a pure joy and prepared me to
stand before you today, delivering
this commencement speech.”
She added, “The advice I have is
to do what you love to do. If you
do what makes you happy, it will
never feel like work.”
Summer Begins at Franklin Downtown
Partnership’s Strawberry Stroll
Start the Summer season off
with friends and festivities at the
Franklin Downtown Partnership’s
14 th annual Strawberry
Stroll on Thursday, June 9, from
4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown
Franklin.
According to a Walsh Construction
representative, the
sidewalks on Main Street will
be completed and construction
crews will have finished for the
day when the Dean Bank staff
will begin dishing up fresh strawberry
shortcakes.
“Road construction is a fact
of life this year, but we won’t let
it get in the way of a good time.
The Strawberry Stroll will be
the perfect afternoon for everyone
to come downtown and see
for themselves the changes and
improvements that are taking
shape,” says Nicole Fortier, event
chairperson.
The Strawberry Stroll’s signature
Famous Strawberry Shortcakes
will be served up outside
Dean Bank on Main Street. 160
quarts of ripe, juicy strawberries
and nearly 700 shortcakes will be
topped with dozens of cases of
whipped cream that afternoon.
Organizers expect to sell out of
the sweet treat.
More than 30 businesses and
community groups will participate
with sidewalk sales, giveaways,
crafts, kids’ activities and
face painting. Don’t miss the lemonade
and cookies at the Franklin
Historical Museum, which will
open at 4 p.m. that afternoon.
A list of participants and happenings
will be available at the
and Facebook page.
“Events like this Stroll are a
good way to bring businesses
and customers together and create
more engagement,” says Beth
Wierling, event co-chair. “Maybe
a resident has followed a business
on Facebook or visited its
website. The Stroll could offer a
chance to meet the shop owner
or organization leader and have
a conversation.”
A variety of performers will
entertain crowds all afternoon.
Kevin Wolfe will perform at Pisini
Shoes, and Music Odyssey
Productions DJ Domenic Cotoia
Three Franklin Graduates of MA Firefighting Academy
Chief Gary B. McCarraher
is pleased to announce that
three Franklin firefighters recently
graduated from the Massachusetts
Firefighting Academy.
Nicholas Garland, age 34, of
Franklin, Christian Mills, age 30,
of Taunton and Keith Schnabel,
age 40, of Wrentham were
three out of 24 graduates from
the 243th class of the Massachusetts
Firefighting Academy’s 45-
day Career Recruit Firefighting
Training Program. A ceremony
was held at the Department of
Fire Services in Stow.
All three firefighters have
been with the Franklin Fire Department
since March 7. They
completed a two-week orientation
at the department before
their class began at the academy
on March 21.
“Firefighter Garland, Firefighter
Mills and Firefighter
Schnabel have all worked very
hard since they started with our
department earlier this year,”
Chief McCarraher said. “We
are all very proud of their accomplishment
of graduating
from the academy and look forward
to having them as a part of
our team.”
The intensive nine-week
state firefighting academy for
municipal firefighters involves
classroom instruction, physical
fitness training, skills training
and live firefighting practice.
Firefighters learned the basic
skills they need to respond to
fires, including how to contain
and control them, public fire
education, hazardous material
incident mitigation, flammable
liquids, stress management, confined
space rescue techniques
and rappelling.
To graduate, firefighters were
required to demonstrate proficiency
in life safety, search and
rescue, ladder operations, water
supply, pump operation and fire
attack (ranging from mailbox
fires to multiple-floor or multiroom
structural fires).
URI Nursing Student from Franklin Graduates with
Comprehensive Experience
When the University of
Rhode Island announced its new
Academic Health Collaborative
just a few weeks ago, it chose
senior nursing student Lauren
Mancini to offer the student
perspective at a kickoff event
attended by health science leaders
at URI and from around the
state.
The Franklin, Mass. resident
delivered a crisp, clear description
of the importance of
collaboration in health care delivery
for students, providers and
patients. A main goal of the collaborative
is to encourage teaching,
research and service across
disciplines, health agencies and
businesses in Rhode Island and
the nation. URI is forming a new
College of Sciences as part of the
major reorganization.
“As I progressed through my
career here at URI, faculty have
emphasized that great health
care is a team activity,” said
Mancini, who earned her bachelor’s
degree in nursing May
22. “This is something I have
experienced firsthand through
building personal and professional
relationships with students
in the College of Pharmacy and
Human Science and Services.
We all learn about similar topics
but have each taken away different
knowledge from our majors,
while still collaborating for the
benefit of the patient.”
This spring, she went to Brown
University as the URI Colleges
of Nursing and Pharmacy joined
Brown Alpert Medical School
students for an interprofessional
education experience.
During her four years at URI,
Mancini completed practicums
in advanced medical-surgical
nursing, nursing of children,
nursing care of vulnerable populations,
psychiatric mental health
nursing and child and reproductive
health.
A recipient of a URI Centennial
Scholarship and inductee of
the Delta Upsilon-at-large Honor
Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta
Tau, and Phi Eta Sigma National
Honor Society, Mancini will be
leaving URI with a minor in
The world of eye surgery was
revolutionized when in 1946, a
German Ophthalmologist used
the first laser to treat the retina.
Laser is light amplified by stimulated
emission of radiation.
This produces photons acting in
Health Risks from the Use
of Laser Pointers
Lasers can be very helpful as
a bladeless surgical device, but a
note of caution: Laser pointers
in hand-held, pen-like devices that
project a beam of laser light are
rapidly replacing the traditional
wooden pointers used by lecturers
during presentations. However,
these pointers can be misused, for
example, by students in classrooms
or by children at home, and this
has generated safety concerns.
There have been reports of temporary
blindness, disorientation
and headaches by bus drivers,
airline pilots, police and teachers.
Manufacturers are now using similar
low powered laser devices in
toys. Never look at a laser pointer
and never point it at someone.
Serious eye injury (sometimes permanent)
can result.
Laser Use in Diabetes
In some cases of diabetic eye
disease, small blebs can form on
the blood vessels of the retina.
These can later cause bleeding
and blurry vision. An Argon Laser
can be helpful in treating these
blebs. The same laser can treat
the entire retina in a scatter fashion
when more proliferation of
abnormal blood vessels is noted.
Laser Use in Glaucoma
The laser can be used in a focused
beam of light to treat the
drainage angle of the eye. This
surgery makes it easier for fluid to
flow out of the front part of the
eye, decreasing pressure in the
eye. Two types of laser eye surgery
exist to open up the drainage
angle of the eye: Argon laser
trabeculoplasty and selective laser
trabeculoplasty.
Laser Use in After
Cataract Surgery
The lens capsule is the thin
bag that holds the intraocular lens
implant in position after cataract
surgery. This capsule becomes
clouded in about 25% of cataract
surgery patients. This causes
blurry vision and is also known as
secondary cataract. A YAG laser
can create a small opening in the
center of the capsule, allowing
light to enter the eye through a
central clear area. The procedure
is painless, requires no anesthesia,
and has very little risk.
Laser Use in Laser Vision
Correction
An excimer laser can be used to
correct a variety of refractive errors
of the eye, from nearsightedness to
farsightedness and astigmatism.
This type of laser is extremely precise.
It creates targeted removal of
tissue to reshape the cornea, which
reorients the light in the correct
place inside the eye.
Laser Use in Cosmetic
Eye Lid Surgery
Eye lid surgery, also known
as blepharoplasty, is designed to
rejuvenate baggy or droopy eyelids
and to restore youthful eyes. The
laser provides excellent precision
for this procedure. Since the laser
seals small blood vessels, there is
very little bleeding during surgery.
As a result, bruising and swelling
are kept to a minimum and recovery
is fast.
Laser Use in
Macular Degeneration
In selected cases of wet macular
degeneration, a photodynamic
procedure can be helpful: A laser
in combination of a light-sensitive
medicine target the abnormal
bleeding blood vessels to block
them.
Laser Use in Cataract
Surgery
The laser has revolutionized
cataract surgery, allowing for a
completely blade-free procedure.
In addition to producing precise
cuts needed for surgery, the laser
used in bladeless cataract surgery
breaks up and softens the cloudy
cataract so there is less ultrasound
needed to remove the cataract.
Less ultrasound delivered inside
the eye translates into less energy
used in the eye and clearer corneas,
which in turn help producing
better vision on the first day
after the surgery. The same laser
is able to treat astigmatism during
the cataract procedure, producing
a better chance for being glassesfree
after the surgery.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art laser
technology to treat a variety of eye
problems. Dr. Kaldawy is the first
to offer bladeless laser cataract
surgery in the area and among
the first in New England. The
top 5 eye hospitals in the country
offer bladeless femtosecond laser
cataract surgery....So do we. We
are proud to bring this technology
and provide the most complete
picture of patient safety in the
U.S. health care system, were announced
today by The Leapfrog
Group, a national patient safety
watchdog. Milford Regional
Medical Center was one of 798
hospitals to receive an A, ranking
among the safest hospitals in the
United States.
“Patient safety is a top priority
for everyone that works at Milford
Regional,” says Edward J.
Kelly, president & CEO of Milford
Regional. “Receiving an ‘A’
grade from Hospital Safety Score
for the fourth consecutive time
affirms our efforts to provide
patients with care that is both
high quality and safety focused. I
want to commend our physicians
and staff whose commitment to
safety brought us this national
recognition.”
“Avoidable deaths in hospitals
should be the number one concern
of our health care leaders.
Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ from
Leapfrog are leaders in saving
lives, and we commend them and
urge their continued vigilance,”
said Leah Binder, president and
CEO of The Leapfrog Group.
Developed under the guidance
of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon
Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety
Score uses 30 measures of publicly
available hospital safety data
to assign A, B, C, D and F grades
to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals
twice per year. It is calculated by
top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed,
fully transparent and free
to the public. For the first time,
the Hospital Safety Score includes
five measures of patient-reported
experience with the hospital as
well as two of the most common
infections, C.diff and MRSA.
score, and to access consumerfriendly
Franklin Saving Lives During Click It or Ticket
The Franklin Police Department,
in partnership with the
Highway Safety Division of
the Executive Office of Public
Safety and Security, the Massachusetts
State Police, and
more than 200 Massachusetts
police departments, took part
in the national Click It or Ticket
campaign between May 9th and
May 23rd. This high-visibility
enforcement campaign promoted
seat belt use through
increased traffic enforcement.
The campaign is funded by
the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration
(NHTSA).
“Our goal is to save lives,”
said Deputy Chief Thomas
Lynch. “As we kick-off the busy
summer driving season, it is
crucial that all motorists buckle
up every time they go out, day
and night – no excuses. Our
officers are prepared to ticket
anyone who is not wearing
their seat belt, including drivers
who have neglected to properly
buckle their children.”
The national seat belt usage
rate is 88.5% (NHTSA). Massachusetts
is falling behind at 74%,
with a 3% reduction in usage
rate between 2014 and 2015.
In Massachusetts, many fatally
injured occupants are unbuckled.
According to NHTSA,
in 2014, nearly half of the
21,022 passenger vehicle occupants
killed in crashes across
the country were unrestrained.
“While these may just sound
like statistics, local police know
from personal experience that
those numbers represent mothers,
fathers, sons, daughters,
brothers, sisters, and friends in
Franklin,” said Jeff Larason,
Director of the Highway Safety
Division. “If we increase our
seat belt usage rate, we save lives,
and that’s why the police are out
enforcing this important law.”
Goodman Eye Medical & Surgical Center
Receives 2016 Best Of Milford Award
Glen K. Goodman, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director and President of the Goodman Eye Medical
& Surgical Center, is pleased to announce that his practice has been selected for the
2016 Best of Milford Award in the Doctors category by the Milford Award Program.
The Milford Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements
and accomplishments of local physicians throughout the Milford area. Recognition
is given to those physicians who have shown the ability to use best practices and
implemented programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value to
their patients.
Each year, the Milford Award Program identifies physicians whom have achieved
exceptional success in their local community. These are local physicians whom
enhance the positive image of small businesses throughout their service area to their
patients and to their community. These exceptional recipients help make the Milford
area a great place to live, work and play.
Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the recipients.
The 2016 Milford Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are
determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Milford Award
Program and by data provided by third parties.
The Goodman Eye Medical & Surgical Center is about to celebrate it’s 7th year at its
145 West Street location. Dr. Goodman, a Wrentham native and current resident, is very
proud of the accomplishments achieved during this time. The Cataract Surgery Center
of Milford, our associated surgery center, is the only full service, Medicare certified,
ophthalmology surgical center in the area.
Sidwell’s Tenure at Franklin High Was All Positive
By Ken Hamwey
The calendar is rapidly approaching
mid-June, and at
Franklin High, that means an
era is coming to an end for
its athletic department. Brad
Sidwell, who coached football
for 20 years and was the Panthers’
athletic director for 15,
will soon close the door on his
two-decade career.
The 46-year-old Sidwell may
be leaving Franklin, but he’s not
leaving the Hockomock League.
He’ll be Taunton High’s varsity
football coach and also serve as
its wellness coordinator. Coaching
and teaching at the same
school no doubt is a plus and as
Sidwell said when he announced
his new roles: “It was time for a
change and Taunton seemed
like a good fit.’’
But, leaving Franklin High
will be emotional — he’s lived
in town for the last 19 years
with his wife and three children,
and he’ll continue to call
Franklin home. The commute
to Taunton won’t be difficult
but leaving a place where fond
memories were created won’t be
easy. After all, the Panthers’ athletic
squads enjoyed lots of success
during Sidwell’s tenure, the
most recent being a state championship
in boys’ ice hockey.
“State, sectional and league
championships are nice, but
what I’ll miss the most is the
people,’’ Sidwell emphasized.
“Franklin has good studentathletes,
supportive fans and
great coaches. I’ll also miss the
top-notch facilities and the way
our kids got involved with the
strength and conditioning program
that we introduced.’’
As the days speed towards
.D. MURPHY
JCONSTRUCTION
Since 1976
Sidwell’s final day on the job,
he keeps his focus — “I’ll keep
working to finish what we started
at Franklin. It’s important to give
the kids the best opportunities.’’
Franklin’s athletic menu blossomed
during his reign. Twentyfive
sports are available and there
are 54 teams, counting freshmen,
junior varsity and varsity
squads. Swimming became part
of the mix and next year gymnastics
returns. Others sports
that were already offered when
Sidwell arrived have flourished.
Girls ice hockey comes to mind
along with powerful squads like
soccer, volleyball, field hockey
and lacrosse, to mention a few.
“The single most important
thing an athletic director wants
to get right is hiring coaches,’’
he said. “We have an excellent
staff here and even when the
process was on-going to find a
new coach, it seemed like the
candidates that applied were
all outstanding. Having a staff
that has stayed with their programs
for long stretches was a
big plus.’’
Coaching football again
seems so natural for Sidwell.
His father, Steve, coached in the
National Football League for 30
years and served as Bill Parcells’
defensive coordinator when the
pair labored in Foxboro. The
younger Sidwell played football
(linebacker) and baseball (outfield/DH)
at Brown, and later
coached at Providence Country
Day. He also was a graduate assistant
at Tulane.
Now, Taunton follows his
time at Franklin and he’s acutely
aware that taking over a 1-10
grid team means he’ll be rolling
up his sleeves to reverse the
Tigers’ fortunes. “We’ll figure it
Brad Sidwell is leaving Franklin High to coach at Taunton. Although his
successes were sweet, he will miss the people most.
out,’’ he said. “I’ve met with the
70 or so candidates (grades 9-11)
and I was impressed. There’s
lots of potential there and the
players want to do well. The key
is to connect with the kids and
build a positive culture.’’
Sidwell’s most recent football
teams at Franklin didn’t enjoy a
plethora of success in the win
column but his 2009 team that
compiled an 11-1 record and
lost in the playoffs by a whisker
to Natick evokes fond memories.
But, as positive as 2009 was,
Sidwell prefers to look at participation
numbers. He derives joy
when students opt to compete in
sports and he admires studentathletes
who become solid citizens.
“There’s nothing better
than to see kids who played
at Franklin and discover what
they’re doing now,’’ Sidwell
said. “Turning out good citizens
is really what the job is all about.
That’s far more important than
wins and losses.’’
An athletic director’s job
today is demanding and timeconsuming.
But, during Sidwell’s
15 years in that role, he gave
100 percent, never complaining
about weekend work or long
hours dealing with budgets and
scheduling. “I’ve got no complaints,’’
he said. “Being A.D.
was demanding but it also was
very rewarding.’’
He soon will be wrapping up
his career at Franklin and his
time wearing Panther blue and
white is almost complete. Brad
Sidwell was a loyal and faithful
servant in his athletic roles at
Franklin High and his there’s
no doubt that his personable demeanor
will be greatly missed.
Krystal Ortiz Head Coach of
Women’s Lacrosse at Dean College
Dean College is happy to announce
that Krystal Ortiz has
accepted the position of Head
additional duties within the
athletic department.
This past spring, Ortiz was
an assistant coach at Frostburg
State University (MD), where
she assisted the head coach in
all phases of operating a NCAA
Division III program. Prior to
her stint at Frostburg, she was the
head coach at Methuen High
School, where she led the team
to two Merrimack Valley Conference
Small School championships
in 2013 and 2014, and was
voted the MVC Small Conference
Coach of the Year in 2013.
She played collegiately at Lasell
College, where she was named
academic all-conference in both
volleyball and lacrosse, and
earned First-Team All-Conference
Honors, as well as the college’s
Rookie of the Year Award
and Unsung Hero Award.
Ortiz will build a program at
Dean that is moving from the
National Junior College Athletic
Association and entering the first
phase of NCAA membership, as
the athletic program will be in its
exploratory year of the NCAA
membership process. The college
will be moving to the New
England Collegiate Conference
in 2017-18.
“I want to thank Dean College
for this amazing opportunity
to lead the women’s lacrosse program,”
said Ortiz. “It is an exciting
time to be a Bulldog during
the transition. I look forward to
getting started and making an
impact on the student-athletes
and the Dean community.”

Delaney Forbes Jumped into a
Perfect Fit at Tri-County Track
By Christopher Tremblay
It was her lengthy background
in another sport that eventually
led her to try out for the Tri-
County track and field team, but
it was her friends that got her to
the tryouts. Junior Delany Forbes
was beginning to lose interest in
gymnastics, but the fact that she
had friends already on the track
team lead her to go out for the
sport.
“Before I take off I take three
bounding steps to remind me
that I need to slow down so that
I can speed up at the curve to get
the height that I need to clear the
bar.”
As a first year high jumper,
the freshman cleared 4’ 8”. She
improved upon that with a 4’
11” jump in her sophomore
campaign that qualified her for
the State Tournament; unfortunately,
she was sick and unable
show her stuff in the State Tournament,
the Tri-County junior
spends a lot of time in the weight
room as well as attending all
the optional Saturday practices.
She also practices jumping with
weights on her ankles.
“It took me my entire freshmen
year along with a bit of my
sophomore season to get things
down with my jumping,” she
said. “Clearing 4’6” that was
easy, but the 4’8” heights and
Tri-County Junior Delaney Forbes’ background in gymnastics prepared
her well for track, where she recently qualified again for the state
tournament.
“When I got into high school,
I was looking to try something
new, as gymnastics was beginning
to bore me, so I tried out for
the cheerleading and track and
field,” Forbes said. “I had some
fiends on the track team, I like
to run and jump so I figured the
hurdles and the high jump would
be a good fit for me.”
Delaney who use to participate
in the long jump and still
takes part in 100-meter sprint
and the 4 x 100, hopes that she
can eventually take her jumping
to the next level when she goes to
college in another year.
Having taken part in gymnastics,
the Tri-County junior found
her past was just what she needed
to succeed in her new sport.
“I liked the whole aspect of
jumping, so I gravitated toward
the high jump; gymnastics gave
me the upper hand,” she said.
to participate. Earlier this year in
Tri-County’s very first meet, the
junior cleared 4’ 10” and once
again qualified to take part in the
State Tournament.
In order to get a chance to
above were more of a challenge
that took natural technique to get
over.”
In addition to the high jump,
Delaney also loves running the
high hurdles, an event in which
she posted her fastest time of
18:24 last season. Much like high
jumping, clearing 10 hurdles
while she runs 100 meters was
something that was in this Cougars
blood.
“A lot of athletes are nervous
at first to try the hurdles, but it
didn’t bother me, and I took to it
right away; it came naturally to
me,” Forbes said. “It’s all about
practice, the jumping was easy,
but I had to get the technique
down. You don’t want to go over
the hurdle too high, as it costs
you time. Instead, you want to
be as low as you can while going
over the hurdle.”
Coming into the season,
Our Roofs will weather the storm!
Forbes wanted to definitely
qualify for the State Tournament
once again as well as set the
school record in the high jump,
which is held by Emily Spillane
who cleared 5’0”. The junior is
also hoping to get to the States
in the high hurdles as well and
is only four seconds away from
qualifying with her teammates in
the 4x100.
“It would be awesome to
be able to take part in all three
events on the State level,” Forbes
said. “I would love to place in the
top ten and be able to go onto
Nationals, where I could learn
from all the talent athletes to help
me with my techniques.”
For His Country, For His Family, For His Brother
By J.D. O’Gara
Jodi Cabino Cipriano’s first
question was, “Why?”
She asked her youngest son,
Zachary, after his graduation
from Tri-County, why he had
chosen to sign up for the U.S.
Marine Corps, after, on his ninth
birthday, October 17, 2005,
his family had buried his oldest
brother, Shayne M. Cabino, who
was killed in action as a 19-yearold
U.S. Marine fighting in Al
Karmah, Iraq on October 6,
2005.
“For my country, for my family,
for my brother,” was Zachary’s
reply.
Cabino Cipriano’s youngest
son, the youngest of her five children
raised in Franklin, graduated
as Private Zachary Anthony
David Cipriano, USMC on April
21 st of this year. After training in
North Carolina, he has now realized
his dream of becoming a
machine gunner, and he’s closer
to an understanding of his late
brother.
Cabino Cipriano says her reaction
to Zachary’s move, in the
footsteps of his eldest brother,
(there’s also Brandi, Justin, and
Billy), is a mix of emotions.
Despite her own worries, the
Zachary
Cipriano, of
Franklin, has followed in the
footsteps of his eldest brother,
Shayne Cabino, into the U.S.
Marine Corps. Shayne was killed
in action in Iraq in 2005.
35-year resident of Franklin, also
a grandmother, says, “Once they
step over that line into adulthood,
there’s not much you can
do. The only choice I have is
to support him 100%. He says
it was the best decision he ever
made in his life.”
Jodi is now a Gold Star and a
Blue Star mother, denoting that
she has both lost a child to active
military duty and now has a child
who actively in the military. She
points out that her family feels
the loss of Shayne all the time,
on holidays, Memorial Day, all
the time, and she empathizes
with other mothers who have laid
their own soldiers to rest.
Her son, Lance Corporal
Shayne Cabino, has a tribute
that stands in Franklin on Rte.
140, a bridge which stands in
his name, and Cabino Cipriano
is grateful for the efforts of Jim
Vallee to that end.
“The Marine bridge on 140
is an amazing tribute to my son.
My husband Tony said ‘Get that
bridge named after my boy”
Within months Jim Vallee had
completed that task,” says Cabino
Cipriano.
The bridge is embellished with
U.S. Marine Corps flags, and
now, more recently, it has been
adorned with a sign celebrating
Shayne’s younger brother, one of
the newest Marines.
“He’s got four years active,
and four years in the reserves,”
says a proud Cabino Cipriano,
who adds, “The Marines – it just
brings out the best of them. They
stand taller, prouder, more confident,
with integrity, morals and
values. I had the bar raised high
with my kids, and I think the Marine
Corps does the same with its
men and women.”
The Rte. 140 bridge in honor of USMC Lance Corporal Shayne Cabino
now has a new sign, that celebrating the entrance of Cabino’s youngest
brother, Zachary Cipriano, into the Marine Corps.
from this one-day event go went to support
the programs and services offered by
HMEA’s 750 staff to 4000 children and
adults with autism and other developmental
and intellectual disabilities. They
include the programs offered in HMEA’s
children’s services ABA division (applied
behavior analysts) for therapists to help
diagnose children on the autism spectrum
with Early Intervention Assessment
Kits. The kits include games, puzzles,
toys, blocks, and other tools which are
designed to assist in evaluating skills and
identifying specific educational needs for
children who have been newly diagnosed
on the autism spectrum.
One assessment tool in the hands of a
SUBSTANCE ABUSE in “Our Community”
May 17, 2016
ALERT: Changing Downtown Traffic Pattern Coming at the End of June
Dear Franklin Resident:
This is the first announcement to the community that the traffic pattern will be changing in Downtown
Franklin toward the end of June, 2016. The one-way traffic pattern in downtown, which many have
become accustomed to, will be changing to two-way traffic. Yes that’s correct: traffic around the
downtown triangle will soon become two-way! We encourage everyone to take it a little slower in their
daily business to make sure you get accustomed to the new flow of traffic.
While the date has not been specified yet when the traffic pattern will become two-way, we can’t begin
to educate the community soon enough. We encourage you to follow the town website and social
media (Facebook, Twitter) feeds, as well as the Town’s traditional local media channels to stay tuned for
specific updates over the coming month. We are counting on you to help spread the word.
Downtown Map. A map is attached of the new traffic routes. I encourage you to print it out, send it to
friends and family and begin to spread the word.
Presenters:
Date/Time:
Location:
SAFE Coalition President, James Derick
Monday, June 20, 2016. 7:00 pm
Dean College Campus Center, Atrium
Emmons St., Franklin, MA (Parking from 109 West St)
Future Notification. As part of the construction contract with the state, the Town will be placing
electronic boards at all intersections of downtown when the traffic transitions to two-way. New lane
markings will be painted around the entire downtown, as well as signage in key areas. Individual letters
will also be distributed to all downtown businesses to help educate their customers of the traffic flow
when exiting their business. The Town will also be doing as much publicity as possible through its own
social media feeds and through traditional local media channels on this pattern change.
Agenda:
1. How did we get here? A discussion on the history of the Opioid epidemic,
nationally and locally.
2. Public Health Epidemic – Discuss current trends in substance abuse. Just
how bad is the problem and how is it impacting our communities?
3. Faces of the Epidemic – Hear from a person in long term recovery into and
out of active addiction.
4. What defines a substance abuse disorder? What triggers addiction? How
does a person recover from his or her disease?
5. Responding to the Epidemic – How has the federal and state government
responded and how are community agencies responding? What role do
community coalitions play?
6. How do citizens become involved in helping communities heal and in
promoting change?
7. Q & A: Engage audience members in the discussion.
Public Benefits. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the community for their patience during
the recent construction in downtown. The Town is installing many public benefits, including new
sidewalks, new paving, better pedestrian-friendly accommodations, and many beautification efforts to
enhance the vibrancy of the downtown. The planning effort for this project has taken well over a
decade and I am confident residents will enjoy the new amenities.
If any resident has any questions, feel free to contact the Town Administrator’s Office at 508-520-4949.
