UPDATE<br />

The NBMC workplan has a comprehensive programme of activity to<br />

encourage participation by Black activists already underway. Barriers<br />

to participation and progression will be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the first jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />

equality survey <strong>in</strong> early 2016.<br />

Mary Seacole statue appeal<br />

<strong>UNISON</strong> has long supported the appeal to<br />

raise funds for a permanent memorial to<br />

Mary Seacole, a Jamaican born woman of<br />

Scottish and Creole descent who set up a<br />

"British Hotel" beh<strong>in</strong>d the l<strong>in</strong>es dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Crimean Wars to nurse British soldiers.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g a motion to women’s<br />

conference, fund rais<strong>in</strong>g events were<br />

organised by branches and regions and at<br />

national events to support the appeal.<br />

In November 2015 it was announced that<br />

bank<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>es would be used to meet the<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g costs, and it is anticipated that<br />

the statue will be erected <strong>in</strong> the Spr<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Motion 28 : Say<strong>in</strong>g what we mean<br />

Brought attention to the way <strong>in</strong> which language can exclude groups of women and/or make<br />

them feel unwelcome <strong>in</strong> women’s self organisation. Called on the NWC to work with the<br />

LGBT committee <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g guidance on <strong>in</strong>clusive language; review NWC publications to<br />

ensure that language used is <strong>in</strong>clusive.<br />

UPDATE<br />

The September NWC meet<strong>in</strong>g received a brief<strong>in</strong>g on non-b<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

identification and <strong>in</strong>clusive language, which it is hoped will support<br />

RWCs <strong>in</strong> review<strong>in</strong>g their own practice and documentation to ensure<br />

<strong>in</strong>clusivity.<br />

Further jo<strong>in</strong>t SOG discussions will take place <strong>in</strong> 2016 to co-ord<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

work on evolv<strong>in</strong>g language.<br />
