GENERAL SESSIONS GENERAL SESSION (GS1) Keynote Speaker Thursday, September 29, 8:30 -9:30a.m. Reverend Dr. Deidre Walton, JD, MSN, RN Reverend Deidre Walton is the immediate past President of the National Black Nurses Association, Inc. A nominee by Modern Healthcare for the 100 most influential people in healthcare, 2014, she is an outstanding leader, one who is known for her acumen about health policy, human rights, health care reform, and negotiating change. She earned her BSN, MSN, and JD and is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College. She has extensive Managed Care experience in nursing practice, education and administration where she develops, implements, supports and promotes health services strategies, tactics, policies and programs that drive the delivery of quality health care. As a patient advocate, and an international leader in healthcare, her expertise is often requested for the resolution of issues regarding healthcare finance, quality patient care, culturally competent care, and safety for patients and employees. Dr. Walton’s familiarity with managing large cost-related data sets has provided opportunities for her to implement review processes and “road maps” in health systems that help to improve health outcomes among persons with complex health conditions. She was appointed to the Joint Commission’s Nursing Advisory Council for the 2015-2016 terms. Most recently, she was selected as a member of the Steering Committee for the Nurses on Board Coalition, sponsored by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation in partnership with the AARP’s Center for Championing for Nursing in America. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurses Association, and American Heart Association Diversity Leadership Committee, and serves on the Advisory Board for the UCLA Resource Center for Minority Aging Research. Much of her knowledge, wisdom, and skills were manifest during her work with the Campaign for Action Diversity Steering Committee that produced the far-reaching and dynamic strategic plan for creating a diverse workforce. GENERAL SESSION (GS2) Thursday, September 29, 9:30-10:30a.m. The State of the State of Maternal & Infant Health in Georgia: Where We Have Been, Where We Are Now, and What We Can Do Merrilee Gober, RN, BSN, JD This session will provide detailed information on Georgia's maternal & infant health data giving the attendee perspective by showing with historical data, the most recent data, and comparing Georgia's data to national averages. Data will include prenatal dental care, fetal and infant mortality, prematurity, maternal morbidity and mortality, postpartum care, perinatal depression and breastfeeding. There will be some surprises for ways we can easily improve maternal and infant health outcomes as well as some sobering concerns in need of intensive collaborative action. GENERAL SESSION (GS3) Thursday, September 29, 3:45-5:00p.m. Utilizing Low Fidelity Simulation for High Risk Clinical Situations: A How to For Every Nurse Cathy Jones, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM Not everyone has access to advanced patient simulators. GENERAL GENERAL SESSIONS SESSIONS GENERAL SESSION (GS4) Friday, September 30, 8:30 -9:30a.m. Harnessing the Power of Creativity Rob Levit - Keynote Speaker Rob Levit is a gifted teacher, trainer and facilitator who has worked extensively with corporate and nonprofit clients. His inclusive and interactive approach creates avenues of communication that encourage participation from those with different learning and personality styles. His areas of expertise include creativity, innovation, strategy, personal/group productivity and emotional intelligence. Learn how multi-sensory activities and creativity can be used as a tool to enhance emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills in this interactive session! GENERAL SESSION (GS5) Friday, September 30, 8:30 -9:30a.m. Nurses, You Usually Make the Call! Franklyn Geary, Jr. MD, FACOG Compassionate caregiver, teacher and mentor are all roles played by Dr. Franklyn Geary, program director of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Morehouse School of Medicine. An Emory University School of Medicine graduate who was once a Grady resident, Dr. Geary plays a critical role both in the lives of the mothers and infants he treats and in the futures of the physicians he is helping to train through the OB/GYN program he helped to establish at Morehouse.
