CEO STATEMENT
My name is Karen Hrdlicka and I am the new President/CEO of Mature
Services. I am joining the organization as it celebrates its 40th anniversary
and I feel very privileged to be leading the organization into a new decade.
I have made a career of serving older adults in a variety of roles and I love
the heart of Mature Services for the older adult and the community at large.
Speaking of hearts, in September we started the “Mature Services
Senior Love Endowment Fund” at the Akron Community Foundation.
We hope you will consider supporting our inaugural year campaign by
donating at www.akroncf.org/give/MatureServicesFund.
As I have spent my first six months getting to know the agency, I am truly
amazed at how Mature Services is woven into the lives of the clients we serve.
This became a theme in my mind as we prepared for this annual report.
In researching a definition of woven fabrics, I found a good one on
www.textileschool.com. It says, “Woven fabrics are made by using two or
more sets of yarn interlaced at right angles to each other. Much variety is
produced by weaving. Woven fabrics are generally more durable. They can
be easily cut into different shapes and are excellent for producing styles
in garments.”
I hope you will see the parallel as you read about some of the people woven
into Mature Services as part of this annual report. Mature Services weaves
our services together to empower our clients, thus improving their lives.
Our services, much like fabric, can be cut into a variety of different shapes
to fit the needs of our clients.
Respectfully,
Karen Hrdlicka
2.

OUR MISSION
Mature Services provides high-quality programs to empower the
economic, social, physical, and mental well-being of adults as they age.
Baby Boomers, the oldest of whom began turning 65 in 2011, can expect
to live into their 80’s and 90’s, giving them a 20 to 30 year period of phased
retirement. Summit and surrounding counties have identified a need in
our communities to accomodate the desire of mature adults to age in place.
The Center for Disease Control defines aging in place as “the ability to live
in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably,
regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Mature Services has become a
state-wide asset in helping older adults to live independently by providing
programs and services to accomodate seniors’ desire to have encore
careers, be active volunteers, support their children, grandchildren,
families, and friends, and age with dignity.
Mature Services promotes successful aging by lowering long-term care
costs, reducing hospital visits, improving mental and physical well-being,
providing assistance to caregivers, and promoting economic selfsufficiency.
By supporting the needs of older adults, Mature Services
makes a direct impact in the communities we serve, including multiple
economic and social benefits.
STAY HEALTHY
By maximizing physical health through appropriate diet, exercise,
sleep, and safe use of medications, older adults will live longer,
healthier, and fuller lives.
Avenues to Recovery
Offers assistance in both mental health and addiction treatment and
prevention programs. By the numbers:
older adults had medications
evaluated via our
Community Impact: By supporting older adults’ ability to be self-managed
and independent for a longer period of time, we are maximizing personal
control over daily life and delaying or eliminating relocation to institutional
environments. In 2015 we offered a new mental health program that helped
twelve individuals seeking assistance.
James Firth’s
Story
Someone close to me was in a recovery program with
Avenues to Recovery at Mature Services, which is how I
discovered their counseling programs. When I had a heart
attack last year, and afterwards wished I had died, my
doctor recommended going to a counselor. I made an
appointment with an Avenues counselor and received
wonderful help with my problems. Seeing my counselor is
worth more than anything I can say. She helped me get my life
back.
Mature Services also helped me with groceries. After paying
heavy medical expenses, I didn’t have money left for food.
Avenues to Recovery referred me to the Food Pantry
program and they provide food when we need it.
Mature Services has made my life so much better.
STAY HEALTHY
Nutrition & Food Pantry
Provides hot meals at congregate dining centers and home delivered meals.
Our Farmer’s Market program provides vouchers to purchase fresh fruit
and vegetables at local farmer’s markets each summer. An Emergency
Food Pantry provides three days’ worth of food to anyone in need every
thirty days. By the numbers:
people served 45,283 meals in
497 congregate sites
older adults received
614 Farmer’s Market vouchers
home totaling 138,298 nutritious meals
provided emergency food orders 1721
Community Impact: Older adults receiving proper nutrition will reduce
hospital and nursing home admissions due to health issues relating to
poor diet and prevent an increase in costs to Medicare and Medicaid.
Our unique menu of tasty food options provides older adults with an
opportunity to make their own healthy food choices, increasing the
likelihood that they will eat the food we provide to them. In 2015, 93%
of our home delivered meal clients said they would recommend our meals.
6.

STAY HEALTHY
Homecare
Provides in-home assistance to older adults with disabilities to help them
remain self-sufficient and independent in their own homes. The Homecare
team provides help with personal care, errands, laundry, light and heavy
duty cleaning. Supportive services includes a visit from a case manager
to help plan services.
older adults received 24,719
hours of cleaning & chore assistance
100 150 200 250 300
Community Impact: Assisting older adults to stay well at home
greatly impacts the individuals served, the local community, and the
state government. Homecare services cost an average of $2,000 per year
compared to Nursing Home costs of $75,000 per year often paid for by
Medicaid dollars supported by our communities. Homecare focuses on
self-sufficiency and wellness-including fall prevention, working to make
the home environment safe and reduce hospital visits due to falling.
Homecare is a winning strategy for everyone involved.
7.

STAY INVOLVED
By offering opportunities to volunteer, older adults will gain the ability
to help the broader community through their time, ideas, skills,
experience and resources through civic engagement activities.
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
Coordinates volunteer opportunities for adults ages 55+ to provide
meaningful assignments throughout the community with our host
agencies. By the numbers:
17
non-profits benefited from
20,141 hours of service
volunteers providing 20,141
hours of volunteerism
305
150 200 250 300 350
Community Impact: Studies show that there are positive health benefits
linked to volunteerism, including a reduction in mortality, increases in
physical function, muscular strength and levels of self-rated health.
Volunteering also reduces symptoms of depression and increases lifeexpectancy
which improves health outcomes and cost savings.
Clyde
Doutt’s
Story
As an RSVP volunteer in the Food Pantry, I am
thrilled to contribute to a service that provides aid
to individuals. I believe the core of being a
volunteer is giving back to the community the good
you have received from others. My work increases
my self-esteem; I make friends with many people in
our community; and in turn, assist the agency.
Being a volunteer also led me to the Home Care
program. When my wife had mobility problems
after knee surgery, my first thought was to ask for
help at Mature Services. We were fortunate to have
easy access to home care. I have time for volunteer
work, and my wife is very grateful for the support
that helps her remain independent.
STAY INDEPENDENT
Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)
Provides paid work experience at non-profit and government agencies to
low income individuals ages 55 and older. By the numbers:
Community Impact: By participating in training programs and SCSEP,
older adults can serve in nonprofits, government agencies, and other
community groups in various capacities. This provides not only an
economic benefit of employment, but social benefits as well, providing an
innovative strategy for engaging older professionals to help support
community assets. In 2015, 171 adults in the SCSEP program found work,
while 685,042 hours of community service were provided to non-profits.
Danny
Williams’
Story
Danny
Williams
My company gave me an early retirement because
I was unable to work due to an illness. I joined a
Vietnam veterans’ employment program and some
of the veterans talked about Mature Services. I
contacted the agency and was placed in the SCSEP
program. I worked part-time at the front desk in the
lobby and my favorite thing to do was meeting and
greeting people.
My experience with Mature Services and their
workforce development program helped me get a job
through networking and I felt good about myself. I
was encouraged to apply to PSI Solutions, where I
was hired as a test monitor. I administer tests to PGA
golfers, brokers, and sales representatives. It’s a
wonderful way to meet people and I’m grateful
we have Mature Services to help people find
new jobs.
STAY INDEPENDENT
Job Club
By offering older job seekers this complimentary three week intensive
course, participants learn how to use today’s technology to identify
opportunities that will be a perfect match for their unique skill sets.
Developing new skills improves confidence, communication skills and
future job success. By the numbers:
Community Impact: Improving upon interviewing and computer
skills provides for the availability of a more skilled workforce to our
communities. The improvement in skill sets generates more job offers
with higher wages and provides for improvements in economic
development and better search outcomes.
Every company relies on a team of people to make things move
smoothly, and nowhere is that more the case than in a non-profit
organization. The Board must be engaged and actively involved for us
to meet the challenges we face, and their commitment to contribute
their skills and wisdom to our work is the secure underpinning of the
agency. The Leadership members must be prepared to put forth their
best effort each and every day and do what is necessary to carry out
our mission. Mature Services is proud of our team because we can
always depend on them to help make a difference in the lives of others.
SENIOR LOVE FUND
During the celebration of our 40th anniversary at Mature Services, our
Board of Directors took the initiative to create an endowment fund with
the Akron Community Foundation to provide for the future of our efforts
called the Senior Love Fund. Recognizing that public funds will not be
able to keep pace with the demand for services to support older adults’
desire to age in place, the Senior Love Fund serves as a symbol of solidity
and permanence in the communities we serve. Donations to the
endowment do not fund programs directly, but are invested to generate
income that provides annual support for the programs in perpetuity.
This allows Mature Services to be more sustainable and less reliant on
grant and government funding.
How can I support the endowment?
We are currently accepting donations for our inaugural year of the Senior
Love Fund. Gifts may be current, pledged, or planned gifts such as cash,
real estate, stocks, memorials, trusts, and insurance benefits. The Senior
Love Fund will respect your wishes so your gifts can have a permanent
impact on the welfare of present and future older adults.
