EU Referendum
Registration closes,
don’t miss out on your vote
saturDAY 13th
The Queen’s Birthday
Trooping the colour starts
from Buckingham Palace
As we move into the summer months of the year,
we await a decision from the Government on our
expansion plans.
We recently received the news that the new Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, had withdrawn City
Hall’s objection to the airport purchasing land in a section of King George V dock, which we
need in order to build the new aircraft stands and taxilane. This news was very welcome as it
helps pave the way for expansion, and my sincere thanks and congratulations go to Rachel Ness
and her team for their hard work getting us to this point. There certainly seems to be light at the
end of the tunnel but we mustn’t be complacent, we still need planning permission to go ahead
and are hopeful of a decision later this year.
I’d like to remind everyone that the EU Referendum takes place on 23rd June. You can only vote
if you’ve registered and you must register by 7th June. Whichever side you’re on, I encourage you
to vote, it’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity. You can read a little from both sides of the debate
and find out how to register later in the magazine.
Two familiar faces have been newly appointed to the Executive Team. I’d like to take this
opportunity to congratulate Michael Spiers on his appointment as Chief People Officer and Steve
Brunell who was appointed Chief Asset and Programme Officer. The appointments bolster the
senior management team as the business moves into a new phase, under new ownership and with
big plans for the future.
Gary Waughman and Ian Stubbles both started their careers at London City Airport back
on 18th May 1987, with 29 years under their belts they are our longest serving employees.
Congratulations and thank you for your commitment to the airport.
In this month’s Airport Life you can read all the latest updates, including exciting new additions
to the terminal and new installations to the balcony. You can also see which team were crowned
champions at the annual LCY 5-A-Side football tournament at The Boleyn Ground, who has
progressed during their time at LCY and who is celebrating a milestone birthday this month.
We are expecting a busy summer and appreciate your continued hard work in delivering excellent
customer service and punctual flights to our passengers.
Have a great month.
Sadiq Khan drops
GLA objection to
purchase land
The new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has withdrawn
City Hall’s objection to LCY purchasing land in the
Royal Docks from the Greater London Authority.
Flexjet’s Embraer Legacy 500
Approximately 1 in 8 people (13%) in the
UK have had an item confiscated at airport
security according to a recent YouGov survey
commissioned by London City Airport.
We took a look at the most common and
the weird and wonderful items confiscated
from hand luggage at security.
Making it to the top of the list of most common
items were snow globes that are confiscated
due to their liquid content, closely followed
by both Harrods and Fortnum and Mason
jams and spreads. While among the most
unusual were Horselyx horse treats, Waitrose
pickled gherkins and £40,000 in cash!
The media picked up some of the unusual
discoveries which were shared on ITV London
News, City AM, Mail Online, Express.
co.uk, Standard.co.uk, The Londonist,
Westminster & Pimlico News and Kensington
& Chelsea News, just to mention a few.
This is great news
and a step in the right
direction for our
expansion plan CADP,
as we need to acquire
the land to be able to
build the new stands
and terminal extension.
However, the plans
are still subject to
planning permission
being granted. A
public inquiry into
our expansion plans
was completed in
April and the final
decision now sits with
the Government. We
hope for a positive
decision later this year.
On 19th May, Flexjet’s Embraer Legacy 500 had its first landing on LCY ground and was welcomed at
the Jet Centre with a traditional water cannon salute from our fire engines. One of the most advanced
private planes in the world, the spectacular mid-sized jet is the fastest in its category and allows for
non-stop travel to and from the US East Coast and points through Europe, The Middle East and Africa.
New prep
benches for
the balcony
90s throwback
video
Dixons Travel
We welcome another exciting newbie who are
bringing a techy touch to the terminal, Dixons
Travel. Bringing us the biggest brands and
latest gadgets, they’re the perfect addition
for both business and leisure passengers.
The store, that opened at the end of May,
features a range of products, including
premium headphones, Apple products,
tablets and more at internet beating prices.
If you find a better price against their listed
competitors (John Lewis, Amazon and Argos)
for applicable products, they’ll discount
double the difference (third party sellers
excluded). Ask in store for more details.
Dixons Travel also offer a handy “reserve
before you fly” service which allows
passengers to reserve products before they
arrive, ready for pick up in the terminal.
Liquids are one of the biggest hold ups in security.
The new, attention-grabbing prep benches don’t
just bring a fresh and modern feel to the balcony,
they will help to streamline the security process
by prompting customers to sort their liquids
and sharps before continuing on to security.
Replacing the smaller white benches, the
unmissable black prep benches feature
examples of liquids larger than 100ml that
are not permitted in hand luggage as well as
those that are. All passengers must put liquids
in to clear plastic bags and throw away any
sharps or liquids larger than the allowance.
Stay tuned for more big changes to
the balcony coming soon.
Perfect for sugar lovers and the sweet-toothed,
Lola’s Cupcakes is one of the latest additions to
the terminal and opened in late May. The pop-up
style shop that sits in the glass box opposite Aelia
Duty Free, offers some of London’s most loved
cupcakes, cakes and brownies, giving passengers
a taste of handcrafted heaven before their flight.
For the calorie-conscious or those with special
dietary requirements, they offer wheat free,
sugar free and vegan products. Celebrating
something special? Lola’s can deliver a full size,
personalised cake to the airport for you to take
home and enjoy.
Can’t resist a sweet treat? Just show your pass for
10% discount at Lola’s Cupcakes. Look out for
the limited edition LCY branded cupcakes!
Vic Abbott, Air traffic Controller made a
treasure of a discovery in his loft recently.
Covered by ITV News, The Newham Recorder,
City AM, Business Traveller and The Londonist
who branded it “The Funniest Thing You’ll See
All Week” was the nostalgic LCY promo video.
Filmed back in the pre-DLR days in circa 1993,
the promo video compares the journeys of an
‘optimistic’ man who arrives at Heathrow with just
one hour to get to his meeting in Central London
and a smart business woman who flies into LCY.
The 90s throwback also features retro scenes
of Canary Wharf and the London skyline
and is available to view on the London City
Airport YouTube Channel, give it a watch!
Office
Show at
ExCel
Last month we
attended the Office
Show at ExCel.
The two-day exhibition, which is the UK’s
No.1 event for Personal Assistants, Executive
Assistants, Virtual Assistants and Office
Managers, includes over 125 exhibitors
showcasing their latest products and services.
With assistants being the primary bookers
of travel for senior executives across the
nation, it’s a great opportunity for us to
promote the airport. A big focus for us
was endorsing the London City Airport
Health Tip
As the summer approaches and
temperatures rise it’s important to
stay hydrated at work.
Drinking plenty of water throughout your day will keep your energy
levels up as well as boost your immune system, help maintain healthy
skin and ensure that your liver stays healthy. You should aim for at
least 2-3 litres per day. Keeping a bottle of water at your workstation or
close by, having a glass of water with every meal and sipping on water
throughout your day can help you to stay hydrated and healthy at work.
Security search lanes upgrade
Following the successful
introduction of Gen 2
security lanes in Central
Search, the system will now
be rolled out to all lanes.
The new technology was
introduced to help Security
handle increasing demand
and deliver the best
experience for passengers.
The first lanes have been a
great success, processing
an average of 640 trays
per hour, compared to 340
on traditional lanes. All
remaining traditional lanes
in Central Search and North
Search will now be upgraded
to Gen 2, with completion
scheduled by the end of July.
Going into the summer
season we will be fully
and Bryn Owen from the Commercial Team.
Providing giveaways on the day were our
airline partners, CityJet who also manned
the VIP Lounge with crew members.
equipped to process high
volumes of passengers
through Security and keep
queues to a minimum,
maintaining the airport’s
customer proposition of
Lucky Prize Draw Winners
Last month every employee received a print of the
airport by Gerry Buxton, each print included a serial
number that was entered into a prize draw to win
flights from LCY up to the value of £500. At a recent
Everyone’s favourite East End bad boy Grant
Mitchell made a surprise return to Albert Square
last month.
Flying in from the Algarve to visit Peggy and Phil,
he arrived at the only airport actually in London.
We saw shots of Canary Wharf, a plane landing at
the western end of the runway and the ‘Welcome
to London City Airport’ sign on the side of the
Fire Station.
Did you know, that all staff on
site are responsible for reporting
accidents or hazards at work?
Anything from a wet spillage, blocked
fire exit, personal injury or potential
hazard has to be reported.
There are different ways to do this depending
on where you are. You can speak to a Terminal
Manager or Terminal Health and Safety
Coordinator if your landside or go into the AOSU
department for Airside reports. You can also
phone LCY Health and Safety on 0329/0082.
If you’re online, you should use the
SHE portal located on the intranet/
Health & Safety/ or https://sheassure.net/
londoncityairport/Portal/Portal/Index
It’s a straightforward process and just requires a
few details like time, location and type of hazard.
This is then reviewed and investigated by the
New seats
It’s no secret that we need more
space and seats in the airport.
The first phase of West Pier which opens later
this month will make a significant impact, but
before that we’ve installed 33 new seats next
to the check-in desks and 96 on the East Pier.
Giving passengers the option of a quieter, more
secluded area to sit in, the chairs on East Pier
are facing the newly installed FID screens.
If you’re in the terminal during peak
periods, we encourage you to promote
the new seating area to passengers.
Reporting accidents and hazards
– The SHE Portal
Health and Safety Team and the Airside Safety
Team and feedback is given on the outcome.
For serious hazards that need immediate
attention you should call 0000 csc desk.
For accidents you should call 0000 csc
dept Landside / 0241 Aosu dept Airside.
The Portal is also used for filling out
DSE forms, used yearly for office
based staff to monitor wellbeing.
LCY 5-A-Side
Football
Tournament
In a dreamlike day for football fanatics and ‘I-could’ve-been-a-footballer-but’ kind
of guys, no less than 110 employees from across the airport community showcased
their skills at this year’s LCY Annual 5-A-Side Football Tournament.
Taking place on the pitch of
the historical Boleyn Ground,
which received its name from a
house which was supposedly
home to Anne Boleyn, the
unforgettable event raised almost
£1000 for Richard House.
Lorum ipsum
Congratulations to the Jet Centre!
Competition was fierce as
teams battled their way through
the rounds in hope of being
crowned champions, but it was
the standout team of the day
that took home the trophy...
The Jet Centre came up top
trumps after their 2-0 victory
over the BP installations team.
With a staggering three wins
on-the-trot, their legendary
performance will surely go
down in LCY football history.
Over 100 colleagues, friends
and family showed up to support
the LCY footballers and cheer
them on from the Alpari Stand.
Thank you to Anthony Angol for
organising the memorable event
and to everyone who played
and attended on the day.
ACCESS,
ALARMS
AND CCTV
AT THE VCP
Latoya Burke-Monrose
Adrienen Racz
Manning the VCP - When we hear the word ‘security’ at LCY most of us tend to think about Central
Search but there’s another crucial area of the airport that’s managed by the Security Team.
The Vehicle Control Point
(VCP) is the gateway to
the western end of the
airfield for all staff based
on the western side and
all vehicles entering
the Critical Part (CP).
The primary function of the VCP
is to process and screen staff
and vehicles as they enter the
CP. But the security team don’t
just spend their time searching
vehicles and staff, collaboration
and teamwork is a vital part
of the operation and there’s a
whole lot that happens behind
the scenes. The team, which can
be made up of any 6 members
of the Security Team, spend
their shift managing the VCP,
either on the early or late shift.
When we caught up with Security,
John Kaguoya, Andras Mezofi,
Isaac Cariaga, Latoya Burke-
Monrose, Sophie Ashburn,
Adrienn Racz and Ross Avery
were manning the VCP and
gave us the inside track on the
wide range of duties carried out
in a typical day at the VCP.
CCTV Patrol Monitoring
Also known as Big Brother!
The team constantly monitor the
CCTV cameras around the whole
airport looking out for suspicious
behaviour or anything unusual.
CP Patrols
Keeping the airport secure
The team ensure that continuous
CP patrols are conducted around
the whole airport, looking out
for suspicious activity or risks
to area such as broken fences.
Monitoring of the CP Line
Keep your eye on the line
The Jet Centre and apron are not
part of the CP during operational
hours, so that means that no
vehicle or person can walk from
the Jet Centre across to the CP
without being processed by
security. Thermal imaging CCTV
technology is used to keep an
eye on the line. From time to
time when people do cross the
line, the team rapidly respond
to deter them away, it’s vital to
the overall integrity of the CP.
RVP
The Rendezvous Point
In the unlikely event of an
emergency, the VCP becomes
the Rendezvous Point (RVP)
meaning it’s the agreed location
that emergency services and
response vehicles would head
to, to be briefed. The security
team are trained with frequent
communication exercises -
Customer Services make a mock
phone call to the emergency
red phone, the team then
ensure they collate the correct
information and would initiate
the RVP for the emergency
services in a real situation.
Jet Centre
Due to the tight layout of the
airlock, which is where vehicles
enter to be searched, it is really
important that the team are
in frequent communications
with the Jet Centre. The last
thing we’d want is vehicle
colliding with a private jet!
Dealing with access control
Passes and security checks
This is the primary function of
the VCP, everyone that passes
through must be in possession of
a valid pass. Vehicles must also
have a valid CP pass, otherwise
they won’t be allowed entry.
Ross Avery, Security Officer
told us “A catering vehicle once
arrived at the VCP and entered
the airlock to be searched. All
their paperwork was in order
and the vehicle clear except for a
missing fuel filler cap. Although
not a clear security issue the
vehicle was refused entry.
When the delivery returned
in a different vehicle they did
not have the correct security
paperwork to be allowed entry.
After some negotiations with
the parties involved and with
other agencies, a deal was
struck which meant the vehicle
and its goods were correctly
screened and access granted.
Although the flight was
delayed slightly, it left with its
catering and all parties were
satisfied with the outcome”.
Fence line activations
Sound the alarm!
The perimeter fence is protected
with an alarm that triggers in the
VCP if somebody tries to tamper
with it. When this happens, the
team investigate by initially
checking the CCTV, if they
do see anyone suspicious the
Terminal Manager and Police
would head out to the scene.
Equipment handovers
To me to you
At the start of every shift,
the teams conduct a rigorous
handover which includes
testing the CP Line and
reporting any faults.
The team clearly have to be
extremely vigilant, some
processing staff and vehicles
while others monitor screens
and patrol the CP line. Teams at
the VCP are faced with different
challenges day to day but have
to consistently stay on the ball.
John Kaguoya
Top Tips to get through
the VCP quicker
From time to time there can be a lot of
traffic at the VCP, but following these
top tips can help you get through
quicker and ease congestion.
• Ensure all large electrical items
(including power tools, laptops, tablets
and similar) are removed from your bag
and placed in a tray on their own
• Ensure all liquids are removed and placed in
a 100ml sealable bag (this includes lighters)
• Keep your vehicle tidy – messy
vehicles with lots of loose items can be
turned away during busy periods
• Follow the guidelines on the
staff food allowance
- Staff can take a ready meal consisting
of a mixture of solid and liquid food (so
that excludes soup, yoghurt and similar
foods) with a weight no larger than 400g
- Or you can take a tin of food (again
excluding soup) such as baked beans or
tuna with a weight no larger than 200g
- Or your own meal in a Tupperware
container no larger than 1.5L and again it
has to be a solid and liquid mixture of food
Changing
Since I can remember, I always
wanted to be in either the Royal Air
Force or the Police. I signed up to the
RAF at 16, serving for 8 years before
eventually joining the Police in 2007.
I’ve been with LCY for four years now and
it’s gone by really fast. I joined as a Part-
Time Ramp Agent and have moved around
a fair bit since then. JFK Concierge, Ramp
Step Up Team Leader and Ramp Team Leader
are some of the other job titles I’ve had.
I was recommended to the Terminal to fill
a manager role that was being advertised.
So I completed the online application
and went through the interview processs.
I’ve now been a Terminal Manager for a
year, working in the security area of the
terminal and specifically Central Search.
I love the variety of my role. No two shifts
are ever the same over here, we face different
Roles
Wendy Lee From Baggage Handler to Ramp
Services Safety Delivery Officer
I always wanted to become a
Police Officer, but unfortunately
back in 1974 due to being
only 4ft 11, didn’t qualify.
My dream was shattered,
but nowadays people
even smaller than me
are in the Police!
I joined LCY in 1998 after
working for the London
Borough of Newham
for 18 years as a Life
Guard, Swimming Teacher
and Health & Safety Rep.
I started here as one of the
first female Baggage Handlers,
along with my sister Alison Hunt
who works on the Ramp. I became
a supervisor after just 4 months, due
to my knowledge of Health & Safety.
Ricky Pluck From Part-Time Ramp Agent to Terminal Manager
challenges every single day. We’re facing
ever increasing passenger numbers, while
adapting to new technology, covert testing
and undergoing CAA inspections.
There’s always a lot going on.
The best aspect of working at LCY?
The people. We’ve got a great
community here, and working
in Central Search I get to see so
many colleagues each and every
day. Everyone is really friendly,
I don’t think there are many
workplaces nowadays where
you get to know everybody.
For anyone thinking of their next
move in the airport, I’d say go
for it. Check online to see what’s
available and speak to managers about
opportunities across departments.
LCY placed me on courses to better my
knowledge of the aviation industry and
then I was able to work my way up to
becoming Ramp Services Duty Officer.
As Ramp Services Duty Officer I was a
people person - staff would always suggest
ways to improve how we did things and
I would ensure this was brought to the
attention of the Ramp Manager, as well as
helping with some of the risk assessments
for the Ramp. The Ramp Agents often
called me Mum as I looked after them.
I’d purchase ice poles in the summer and
make up pots of hot soup in the winter,
unfortunately once the regulations on
liquids were introduced, I had to stop.
Lee Russell, Ramp Director asked if I
was interested in working on a project to
update all the risk assessments and improve
the safety awareness on the Ramp.
It was a chance to do what I really
enjoyed and prove what I was capable
of, so of course I said YES.
After working in the role for almost
a year, I was offered the position of
Ramp Services Safety Delivery Officer
and accepted. I complete all the risk
assessments, work on Emergency
Planning with Rebecca Carr, work
on Risk Planning with Serena Woon,
complete TRACAs (training risk
assessment corrective action) on
Ramp Agents and will be delivering a
project on Slip, Trip & Fall to Ramp
staff in a cake and safety day.
People here are like family, we look
after one another. I’m passionate about
what I do and I help deliver a safer
working environment for staff that I
care deeply for. Another great aspect
of working at LCY is being part of
a company that are Richard House’s
biggest donator, that’s something to
be proud of. There’s so much more to
mention with LCY Central, MediCash,
Squirrel, chances to win iPads (I
was lucky enough to win!), all the
volunteering we do… What company
do you know that does as much as us?
Quinyx
The new rostering software
The Security Team have been trialling a new
software system called Quinyx. Primarily
for rostering, the software is a new, highly
effective way of keeping track of shifts,
requesting leave and signing up to overtime.
The easy-to-use software can be used on
smartphones, laptops, desktops and tablets
and will replace the slower paper process.
With almost instant responses to requests,
the software allows you to easily manage
your time and shifts. It also ensures a much
fairer way to find out about overtime as all
colleagues are informed via Qmail, which is
a part of the software, and accepting is easy.
We’ve heard lots of great feedback so far,
so we spoke to some of our colleagues
in Security to find out how Quinyx
has made a difference to them.
Matt Devito
“By using Quinyx
it has helped me
manage my life
around work a lot
easier, everything
I need to know
is there at a
click of a button.
Communication
between
colleagues and
management
couldn’t be
easier with
very quick response times with regards
to leave and shift swaps, it also makes
booking overtime easy and fair for all staff
members.” – Matt Devito, Security Officer
“I was very sceptical about Quinyx working
and I also had log in issues at the start, so
I thought it was not going to work. Now I
am impressed with it. Responses to leave
requests are instantaneous, you don’t have
to wait 2 weeks for a reply. I can’t even
use email, so for someone who is computer
illiterate I find it very user friendly. Even
though I know what shifts I work, it is useful
to see who else you will be working with
each day.” – Kim Lyons, Security Officer
“It’s a fantastic app. I feel it’s made it easier for
me to use, and email managers when needed
as you can’t always remember everyone’s
email. We can also use it to communicate
with staff on opposite shifts if shift swaps
are needed. Communication is a lot better
and we get updated more with overtime slots
etc.” – Assma Sheikh, Security Officer
After a successful three-month trial,
the new software which keeps all things
rostering in one place, will eventually be
rolled out to all operational staff including
Ramp, Jet Centre, Ops, Fire Station and
Building Services staff in due course.
More details to follow soon.
A leader in the
luggage industry
Hayes Triple
Compartment Tote Bag
Office On Wheels
Women’s Carry On
Tri-fold Carry-On
Garment Carrier
Musi Chayla, Maria Monger and Christine Lau
Founded in 1975, TUMI takes its name
from a Peruvian icon known to its founder
Charlie Clifford from his days in South
America. Their innovative introduction of
soft, ultra-functional travel bags catapulted
the company to success and it’s now one
of the leaders in the luggage industry.
Store Manager, Musi Chayla who was
born and raised in the East End, moved
to TUMI at LCY for its grand opening in
November last year. A true ambassador
of the brand, Musi previously worked for
TUMI at Westfield in Shepherds Bush and
now works alongside Associate Managers
Maria Monger, Christine Lau and Zufi
Riaz. After a hugely successful first six
months, he tells us all about their products,
services and the TUMI experience:
“One thing that really stands out here is the
customer’s existing knowledge. Passengers
already know and love our products. We
regularly see repeat customers and that keeps
us motivated. We have unparalleled quality in
our products and our customers know that.”
Walking through the terminal, we can
see that this is more than true as a
passenger waits for his newly purchased
case to be monogrammed and talks to
Christine about when he’ll be returning
and what he wants next. TUMI’s premium
products and customer experience
have enabled them to build trust with
their clients not just in the UK.
Musi continues, “We have world-class
customer service and go above and
beyond for each and every client. We
educate customers on all things TUMI,
we’re never about the hard sell.
Once a customer knows and can see the
benefits of our products and services,
they’re able to make the right decision
when purchasing luggage and accessories.
“Our products are superior in functionality,
quality and durability and we’re a leader
in technical innovation, using two ultradurable
trademarked materials. Plus our
services stand out to the customer. We
offer free delivery to anywhere in the EU,
no matter what you buy. If you are doing a
round trip from LCY and want to purchase
a product, we can meet you at arrivals when
you return. We also offer complimentary
monogramming for all of our products”.
When asked the ultimate question, why
TUMI? Musi picks up my phone, “Let’s test
your phone case, how much do you think it’s
really protecting your phone, would you let
me drop it from here?” He holds the phone
and pretends to drop it as I desperately plead
with him to return it back to the safety of
the table. He then picks up his phone which
is protected with the two-piece phone case
and without hesitation drops it from around
4ft. Astonished passengers look over as
he scoops up his phone from the floor, not
a crack, a scratch or a scuff in sight.
Staff get an impressive
20% discount on all TUMI
products just by showing
their pass. All luggage and
bags come with a 5-year
global warranty while
accessories come with a
2-year global warranty.
Good Deed Feed
Every day across the airport,
employees are going the extra
mile to help make a difference for
passengers and their colleagues.
Here are just some of the good stories
that happened recently. If you want to say
thanks to a colleague that went above and
beyond or highlight a good deed, contact
Exceptional service
Last month, Customer Service Agents Rosanna
Annekie and Donna Yearwood went above and
beyond to assist an LCY passenger.
The passenger, who has reduced mobility, had a large
amount of luggage. Rosanna and Donna stepped in to help
as there were too many bags for Securitas to handle alone.
They accompanied the stressed passenger through security
and gave them complimentary hot drinks at Panopolis.
The passenger has contacted us since to
thank them both for their excellent customer
service, what a testament to the team.
Well done!
Keeping
passengers safe
Rosanna Annekie stayed late after closure to assist
two Swiss passengers who had missed their flight
connection. They were left in a panic, trying to find
accommodation in London for the night. To make
matters worse, they only had cash which isn’t
accepted in many hotels or Swiss credit cards that
aren’t accepted in the UK. Rosanna stayed long after
her shift to ensure that the passengers were safe
and found them accommodation for the night, Kyle
Taylor then dropped the passengers to their hotel as
it was too close for taxis to accept their journey.
It’s customer service like that that we’re really proud of.
Dear Mohammed Uddin,
Thank you so much for the wonderful help you gave us at
London City airporton the evening of May 16th after my holiday
accident. You did so much morefor us than we could have
expected and we will be eternally grateful.Your employers
should be very proud of you and grateful too.
Very best wishes
£40,000
found
To the untrained eye, it was a normal piece of luggage,
but not to star Security Officer, Ruby Appoe.
Spotted by her last month, a suspicious bag
contained £40,000 of undeclared cash.
Special Branch and UK Border Force were involved
and we’ve received great feedback from them.
Well done Ruby, what a spot!
Above and
beyond
for Avis
Gulab Miah spotted a suspicious man in the
Central Search last month. Subsequently,
Rikki Pluck and Gulab followed the man
and alerted the Police. The man became
aware he was being followed and tried to
hide in Aelia Duty Free. He was stopped and
spoken to by officers and it turned out he
had skipped bail and was then arrested!
Brilliant, what a result!
Lubomis Budinov from Avis went above and
beyond to help a passenger fit a car seat in to her
car in the car park. With her baby screaming and
the typical British weather battling against him, it
was no easy feat but he persevered through the
rain and helped the distressed passenger have a
better journey.
In a once-in-a-generation opportunity,
the UK are taking a vote to either remain a part of the European Union, or leave.
To vote, you must be registered by 7th June.
To register visit: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
You’ll need your national insurance number, date of birth and address to hand.
Will we stay or will we go?
The EU
Referendum
- Thursday
23rd June
What is the European
Union (EU)?
It’s an economic and political
partnership involving 28 European
countries. It began after World War
Two to foster economic co-operation,
with the idea that countries which
trade together are more likely to avoid
going to war with each other. It has
since grown to become a “single
market” allowing goods and people
to move around, basically as if the
member states were one country.
It has its own currency, the euro,
which is used by 19 of the member
countries, its own parliament and
it now sets rules in a wide range of
areas - including on the environment,
transport, consumer rights and even
things like mobile phone charges.
What’s the vote about?
A referendum (a simple ‘either/
or’ vote) is being held for British
citizens to decide whether the UK
should remain in the EU, or leave.
Why do they want
the UK to stay?
Those campaigning for Britain to
stay in the EU say it gets a big boost
from membership - it makes selling
things to other EU countries easier
and attracts investment. They argue
that the flow of immigrants, most of
whom are young and keen to work,
fuels economic growth and helps pay
for public services. They also believe
Britain’s status in the world would be
damaged by leaving and that we are
more secure as part of the 28 nation
club, rather than going it alone.
Why do they want
the UK to leave?
Leave campaigners believe Britain
is being held back by the EU, which
they say imposes too many rules
on business and charges billions of
pounds a year in membership fees
for little in return. They also want
Britain to take back full control of its
borders and reduce the number of
people coming here to work. One of
the main principles of EU membership
is “free movement”, which means
you don’t need to get a visa to go
and live in another EU country. They
also object to the idea of an “ever
closer union” and what they see
as moving towards the creation
of a “United States of Europe”.
Which way should
we vote?
Whichever way you’re leaning, there
is a lot of information available from
both sides on the possible impact of
this decision on the British economy,
jobs, families, public services,
immigration and security to name a
few. We urge everyone to look into
both sides of the argument and make
up your own minds which way to vote.
WHAT THE IN CAMPAIGN SAYS
1. Stronger economy: Membership of Europe supports a stronger
economy that delivers growth, trade and investment as well
as jobs and lower prices. Leaving Europe would make Britain
permanently poorer by £4,300 per household per year.
2. Jobs: Independent experts found that over 3 million jobs in
Britain are linked to our trade with Europe. This would be put at risk
by leaving. Entry-level jobs are already at risk due to uncertainty
around leaving Europe. The EU offers young people opportunities to
study, work and travel abroad through the Erasmus programme.
3. Lower prices: Being part of Europe means cheaper prices in
supermarkets, cheaper petrol, and lower energy prices. The governor of
the Bank of England said that leaving could lead to higher mortgage rates.
4. Security: Many of the threats to Britain’s security are global in
nature. Whether it’s implementing sanctions, sharing intelligence
about terrorists or arresting and deporting criminals using the
European arrest warrant, being in Europe makes us all safer.
5. British trade: British businesses can sell tariff-free to
500m consumers across Europe. That supports £627m in
trade every day, 44% of the UK’s total exports. Leaving
would put that at risk, putting British jobs on the line.
6. Public services: EU membership is vital to a strong economy
and well-funded public services. Leaving Europe would be a body
blow to our economy, creating a £36bn black hole in our public
finances. That would mean less money for services like the NHS.
7. Cheaper holidays: Flights and mobile roaming charges are
cheaper because of EU action: allowing low-cost airlines
to set up, and legislating to ban extra data charges.
8. Standing in the world: Leaving the EU would diminish our
influence on the world stage. In today’s world, the UK has more
control over its destiny staying inside organisations such as
the EU. We would never consider leaving the UN or Nato.
9. Climate change: The EU, led by Britain, has spearheaded
global action to tackle the challenge of climate change, with
clear targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. A collective
approach to cross-border environmental problems is crucial.
10. Working rights: The EU works to protect people in the workplace
by making sure they have access to parental leave, paid holiday,
protection for part-timers and limits on excessive hours. Being in
Europe ensures protection for women in the workplace, tackling
gender discrimination and fighting against income inequality.
WHAT THE OUT CAMPAIGN SAYS
1. Our money, our priorities: We send £350m to the EU every
week, enough to build a new fully staffed NHS hospital.
It’s forecast to go up to £400m by 2020. We can take back
control of this money and spend it on our priorities.
2. Control of our laws: 60% of our laws come from Brussels, with the
EU in control of our trade, borders and democracy. If we vote Leave,
UK law will have ultimate authority and we will take back control.
3. Protect our NHS: Uncontrolled immigration has put a huge strain
on A&E waiting times and demand for GP registrations. EU law
prevents UK authorities from checking qualifications and language
skills of doctors coming from the EU, putting patient safety at risk.
4. Support business: Regulation from the EU costs our businesses £60m
every week. Only 6% of UK businesses export to the EU, yet all have
to comply with these rules. We can free our entrepreneurs and small
businesses and allow them to focus on economic growth and creating jobs.
5. The EU is integrating more: If we vote Remain it will mean
more money and power to Brussels. The EU is set to integrate
more with the creating of a Eurozone treasury with new powers
and common positions at international institutions.
6. Free to trade with the whole world: The EU has control over
who we can strike free trade deals with, and currently we don’t
have any with important countries such as China, India and
Australia. We can take back control of our trade policy.
7. Immigration and border protection: The European Court has control
over who can come into the UK. We’ve been unable to prevent dangerous
individuals walking into our country. A fairer system will allow us to
control numbers without having to turn away talented people from
outside the EU who want to contribute to our society and economy.
8. Control of our tax system: The EU decides the levels of VAT
we pay on goods and services. This was most recently evident
when the Government couldn’t reduce VAT on women’s sanitary
products. We can create a tax system which suits our economy.
9. Better investment for agriculture: For every £2 we put into the
EU, we only get £1 back. Outside the EU we will be able to continue
supporting our farmers but in a far more efficient way, deciding our
own rural policy with people who understand the UK industry.
10. Higher living standards: Leaving the EU would improve the lives of
individuals and families. Independent research has found that rules from
Brussels increase the cost of your food shop. On top of this, the head of the
Remain campaign has admitted that wages would rise if we vote Leave.
