June 8 - 14, 2016 www.TheTownCommon.com Page conjunction with the NH Humanities Council, will sponsor anthropologist Robert Goodby for the program Digging into Native History in New Hampshire on June 9, 2016, at 6:30 pm at the Seabrook Library, 25 Liberty Lane in Seabrook. This program explores how Abenaki history in New England has been reduced to near-invisibility as a result of conquest, a conquering culture that placed little value on the Indian experience, and a strategy of self-preservation that required many Abenaki to go “underground,” concealing their true identities for generations to avoid discrimination and persecution. Robert Goodby reveals archaeological evidence that shows their deep presence here, inches below the earth’s surface. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Scouts of all ages - from Kindergarten through High School - are expected to participate. Of particular interest: we expect to award 14 Bronze Awards, two Silver Awards and two Gold Awards. These awards each require more than 20 hours devoted to a specific project that, prior to execution, must be approved by Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. Starting at the visitor contact station at Lot 1, the ranger-led group will gradually make its way south along the paved portion of the refuge’s Wildlife Drive, stopping at various points along the way to view wildlife, hear stories of Plum Island’s past, and learn about the inner workings of a national wildlife refuge. This is an “out and back” tour. The distance covered will depend on how many stops are made and how much time is spent at each stop. Saturday, June 11th @ 9:00 am. Tour duration will be about 2 hours. Appropriate for adults and children age 16 or older. Each participant must provide a bicycle, helmet, and water bottle. Participants may also wish to bring insect repellant, sun block, binoculars and/or a camera (if these items can be safely stowed while biking). Meet the ranger on the deck of the visitor contact station. Limited to 10 participants. Preregistration is required.
