2. what we do
Building a Home
Stratton Place, Cirencester
EW has a breadth of experience within the
residential sector, from bespoke traditional
and contemporary housing through to
varying degrees of extra care, including
mental health and supported living units.
We offer a service that delivers all aspects
of the process from inception to completion
but within that offers benefits in addition to a
standard service.
On recent projects we have been able to:
• Gained planning permission for sites
previously refused,
• Maximised Development - overachieved
clients expectations by increasing the
development
• Designed to be in keeping with Cotswold
Design Guide
• Significantly re-designed an extra care
development for significant benefit in gross \
net ratio,
• Maximised site potential whilst retaining
elegant and appropriate standards of design
construction.
• Taken an apartment project requiring a
reduction in apartment numbers for planning,
and redesigning the layout to provide an
overall reduction of 3 apartments but an
increase of 7 bedrooms overall, resulting
in a reduced development gaining the
support of the planning department, whilst
simultaneously maintaining the overall GDV.
2. what we do
Building a Home
Park Royal, London
We will explore such potential benefits for any
project as we lead the design solution from
site assessment to building hand-over.
By listening to client aspirations and by
offering clear advice based on our depth of
experience we will achieve the best results
for the building design and the client’s /
operator’s brief.
Our projects progress through a phase of
milestones where we review critical stages
with the client and control the decision
making process to inform subsequent stages.
• Re-designed from 3 storey care home
outline scheme to 6 storey extra care
apartments
• Design included workshops with residents
associations and Council Social Services
We bring a depth of knowledge from our
history in the residential sector where we have
seen aspirations change and develop over
time and where innovation and new thinking
must inform each project.
We continually monitor the new
developments in the market, legislation and
regulations to ensure that our involvement in
projects is based on current thinking and can
anticipate future trends.
3. how we do it
Designing for Living
Riverbank, Hull
We understand that each developer has
different approaches and that briefs will
vary across projects. Similarly, that site
opportunities will vary significantly in terms of
constraints and context.
• Supported Living as gateway house for
rehabilitation
• Variety of unit sizes and clusters for several
stages of rehabilitation
• Desinged with enhanced safety standards
Design approach
Our design approach is tailored to individual
projects to ensure the correct solution for the
client and site.
We do not have a series of standard
designs although we do have in-house
methodologies for quick site assessments to
allow early, realistic development appraisals.
This combines desk top studies, site visits,
planning research and variable template
drafting tools.
Design and layout solutions will be site specific
and may be Traditional or Contemporary in
architectural style.
Where we can be involved at the earliest
stages we will bring design Innovation to the
process where building options can influence
operational strategies.
In all cases we will undertake public
consultation and community involvement.
3. how we do it
Designing for Living
North Street, Peterborough
After
When specialist design is required we will
research and investigate and present and
debate with stake holders to determine
appropriate strategies.
• Part of regeneration project “North Street”
(which included the residential scheme, refurbishment
and extension to the “Ostrich”
pub and re-furbishment and restauration of
the “Masonic Hall”)
• Designed to maximise development on
constrained site
• In keeping with strict conservation area
design guide
Before
This approach is common to all types of
projects whether it is a new development,
re-designing of an building, extensions or
refurbishment.
Building design
Building design evolves in parallel ways
and our processes to achieve the right
building in its site context will be matched
by the development of detail design and
specification for the interior environment of
the hotels.
We maintain a library of standards, manuals
and our own specifications, schedules, room
data sheets and product references. Specific
projects will call on this database as required
and new projects can benefit from this
information to inform evolving developments.
EDMUND WILLIAMS| www.edmundwilliams.com 7
3. how we do it
Designing for Living
We will work with the selected Interior
Designer and other specialist designers as
required and act as coordinator for smooth
integration of content.
Hands on
The directors are hands-on with all projects,
and with Project Architects and Technicians,
will guide the output of working drawings for
other consultants and contractors for fast and
accurate information.
We take a realistic approach to resourcing
projects and can out-source stage packages
as required. We have a successful satellite
office in South Africa that has been
producing construction drawings for us since
2005.
BIM and sustainability
Information can be produced in 2D and 3D
format.
3D massing modelling is a useful tool to
illustrate early stage visualisation and can
develop into full BIM technical modelling if
the scale of project is relevant.
We are happy to guide clients to sustainable
building solutions and to work with their
corporate environmental policies.
