GLASGOW FORT SHOPPING CENTRE BRINGS THE
MAGIC OF READING TO LIFE FOR LOCAL CHILDREN
More than 250 children from schools
in Glasgow were invited to Glasgow
Fort Shopping Centre last week to take
part in a storytelling session, aimed at
helping them fall in love with reading.
The session was part of the National
Literacy Trust’s Young Readers
Programme, in partnership with
Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre. The
programme encourages children
under the age of 11 to read for fun in
their spare time, which can have an
important impact on their literacy
skills. Recent research from the
National Literacy Trust revealed that
children who read every day outside
the classroom are five times more likely
to read above the expected level for
their age than those who never read
outside class.
Over the past few months, pupils
from Sunnyside Primary School, St
Philomena’s Primary School and St
Timothy’s Primary School have taken
part in three literacy-focused events
where they learned how to choose
Children of Sunnyside Primary School.
New eLibrary service launched
Primary Times SUMMER ISSUE
books they will enjoy and selected
three to take home for free. The project
culminated in an event at Glasgow
Fort Shopping Centre, where pupils
took part in literacy-focused activities,
including a storytelling session.
Pupils were taken on a behind-thescenes
tour of WH Smith where they
were given the chance to quiz staff
on their favourite fictional stories and
characters.
New for this year, Glasgow Fort
Shopping Centre is running a
competition to find the area’s young
‘Reading Hero’. The competition will
reward local children under the age of
12 who have gone above and beyond
to inspire others to read. Perhaps they
help their brother or sister to read or
love reading stories to family members.
One winner from Glasgow will receive
two £100 National Book Tokens; one for
them and one for their school. Parents,
guardians or anyone inspired by a local
child can nominate them by visiting
www.glasgowfort.com/ReadingHero.
All human beans are invited to Glasgow libraries this
summer to join in the Big Friendly Read.
Glasgow’s 33 libraries are taking part in this year’s Roald Dahl themed Tesco Bank
Summer Reading Challenge, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s
birthday, and we’re planning lots of Phizz-Whizzing fun.
Starting on Saturday 25th June and running until Saturday 6th August, this year’s
challenge is a great way of keeping up children’s reading skills over the summer
holidays, opening up a world of fun and adventure to stop boredom setting in.
It’s really easy to get involved with this year’s challenge. Just head to your local
library, sign up and read six books – you choose how quickly you read your 6
books and there is no upper limit on how many you read.
Children can choose any books that appeal and our libraries will have lots of Roald
Dahl books too, as who can resist reading James and the Giant Peach or the BFG?
There are splendiferous rewards for those taking part and there are some fantastic
packs with limited edition cards to collect. Plus there is a special pre-school
challenge for younger children, particularly
those starting school in August.
Pop in to your local library and pick up the
challenge pack to get started, or more details at
In need of
lots of different activities: Arts&crafts,
and learning sessions. Costs vary
Rookie Rockstars are a
hit at Maxie!
The families of pupils at Maxwellton
Primary School in East Kilbride were
treated to a fabulous rock concert with a
difference recently.
Rookie Rockstars is an initiative that was
created to give children the opportunity
to work with professional musicians and
singers to learn original songs, record a CD
and perform in a concert - a programme
designed to embrace the 4 capacities of
Curriculum for Excellence, with a strong
anti-bullying message.
The children enjoyed learning songs with
the Rockers, and put on a great show at the
end of the week.
