EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
EVERYWHERE (KAREN PONULAK) 05
As I write, our team is working non-stop to prepare for the biggest
NCS programme The EBP has ever delivered. NCS helps young
people build confidence and gain new skills whilst giving back to
their community and having fun – what better springboard for
their future?
This issue has a rather cosmic quality, with astronaut Tim Peake
inspiring young people to grow ‘seeds from space’ and engineer
Abbie Hutty poised to deliver an exciting lecture about building a
rover for Planet Mars.
Continuing the rocket theme, I am thrilled to announce that the
Careers & Enterprise Company will be the ‘thruster’ behind The
EBP’s Project Lumen, fuelling our work with the full range of
people, businesses and institutions that can supercharge young
people’s progress from study to work.
Our new office in Northampton will massively boost our capacity
to serve that county and is also a statement of intent: The EBP is
fully committed to building on our Northants connections; enabling
us to improve the prospects of more young people. The Young
Leaders programme is an exciting place to start – getting to know
some of the brightest young people in the county and empowering
them to better represent and serve their peers.
WORK EXPERIENCE
MAKES A DIFFERENCE
The EBP work experience conference 2016
Colin McFarlane with The EBP’s Elaine Lilley ©
Our work experience conference in March was all about
inspiration and actor Colin McFarlane, star of Batman and Dr.
Who, and Chancellor of Lincolnshire Children’s University, was an
ideal guest speaker for the occasion.
McFarlane delivered a keynote speech on his work as founder
and director of the charity Making History, which helps young
people to discover something in their family or cultural history
that inspires them to follow their dreams. He also spoke of his
experience of hosting a student for work experience and knows
first-hand how beneficial it can be for both employer and
young person.
Delegates representing schools and academies from across
Lincolnshire gathered at The EBP’s Lincoln offices to hear
students from Branston Community Academy and Caistor
Grammar School explain how work experience changed their
ambitions and the way they think about work. Dawn Barron from
Human Alchemy discussed the amazing benefits that placements
can offer businesses.
The EBP has coordinated over 15,000 work experience
placements across Lincolnshire and Rutland in the last three
years. Employability Manager Eilidh Stewart said:
A memorable work experience placement that
links learning to the world of work can increase
a young person’s commitment to their studies
– it was fantastic to see so many of our schools
and academies represented.
Julie Kelly from Lincoln Castle Academy said the day was,
very informative and Colin
was absolutely fantastic!
Working up: work experience
‘renovates’ Bradley’s world
Bradley Hinch’s story highlights the importance of pre-16 work
experience and demonstrates the opportunities it presents.
Bradley attends the STS site of the Lincolnshire Teaching and
Learning Centre – alternative providers for students who have
been excluded from mainstream school. He was offered a work
experience placement with Mark Brown Property Services that
was subsequently extended beyond the original end date and has
now been offered an apprenticeship starting in September.
During my time at MB property services I
have picked up various skills such as using
tools and equipment like trowels and saws
etc. Furthermore I now have a sense of
earning money and on how to handle money.
During work I have also learned how to be
respectful to a customer while in their home.
Moreover, I now know the basics of how to
tile, make mixes and many other trade skills.
I have huge respect for Mark for giving me
this opportunity, he has set me with good
solid skills for the future and he’s made my
time there enjoyable and it’s been a laugh.
Last but not least, if you read this and you’re
looking for a quality bathroom or kitchen
you know where to look.”
Bradley Hinch
04
In February 2016 I was asked if I would
consider Bradley Hinch from STS as a
candidate for a work experience position
at my home improvements company in
Lincoln. I must say I was a little cautious
at first due to not truly understanding the
benefits it would have for my business
and for the candidate. Having agreed to
a weekly placement Bradley joined us and
has continued his placement.
POLICY
POWWOW
Mapping the new schools’ paradigm:
Educational excellence everywhere
In addition, Bradley has worked outside
of his agreed contract to assist us during
busy times. I hope that the experience has
had a positive impact for Bradley’s future,
giving him an understanding of being
self-employed and the work involved in
becoming successful. Bradley has gained
multi trade skills and excellent customer
service experience. Bradley has shown
willingness in all areas and in addition to
his decision to continue with a full time
Joinery Diploma he will continue to work
with us part time as a paid operative”.
Mark Brown, Mark Brown Property Services
When Bradley first arrived at STS he was
very opinionated and prickly. He knew all current
affairs and had an opinion on all of them and
would tell you what that opinion was whether you
wanted to know or not! He just wanted to earn
his own way and in his words, “Stop taking money
out of my Mum’s purse and start paying my own
way like a proper man”, he was 15 at the time. He
is trying for his GCSE English and he will be taking
his Level 2 functional skills Maths. Since working for
Mark, he has grown considerably in confidence at
his own worth and he no longer has the belief that
exam passes count for nothing. He quotes Mark
all the time, “Mark says this, Mark says that”. He
has genuine respect for Mark. Bradley says “I have
no worries working for Mark, I know at all times
if Mark is having a go at me for doing something
stupid he only wants for me to get it right”. It was
the best day for all concerned when I picked the
phone up for work experience for Bradley and got
Mark Brown.”
Jacqui Gay, STS
Bradley Hinch ‘on the job’
“The government is committed to ensuring
every child has an excellent education which
allows them to achieve their full potential”.
So says the press release announcing
next steps to implement its white paper.
There are seven main elements to the
paper, which give a clear indication of the
direction government will take:
GREAT TEACHERS
– EVERYWHERE THEY’RE NEEDED
This is a focus on recruitment and professional development:
initial teacher training; teacher accreditation; National Teaching
Service; improved CPD; better responses to challenges facing
teachers such as workload.
GREAT LEADERS RUNNING OUR SCHOOLS
Despite the ‘personality cult’ language, this is a focus on
infrastructure to support effective leadership: new National
Professional Qualifications; incentives to attract strong leadership
qualities to where they’re needed – encouraging the best rising
‘leaders’ to move to more challenging areas; Excellence in
Leadership Fund.
A SCHOOL-LED SYSTEM WITH EVERY SCHOOL
AN ACADEMY
We know there has been a U-turn on this, but it now has a focus
on coasting and underperforming schools: more Free Schools and
UTCs; greater opportunities for parental involvement (e.g. Parent
Portal); clarified role for local authorities; clearer methods to deal
with complaints and take parents’ views into account.
PREVENTING UNDERPERFORMANCE, HELPING
SCHOOLS GO FROM GOOD TO GREAT
School improvement will be the responsibility of school leaders:
better methods to broker school improvement support; more
‘great’ sponsors; emphasis on the most challenging areas.
HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND A WORLD-LEADING
CURRICULUM FOR ALL
The EBP’s Policy Advisor
Karen Ponulak
This includes ‘completing the introduction’ of the revised national
curriculum; a period of stability to improve primary assessments
and embed the EBacc; focus on building character and resilience,
as exemplified by the NCS programme; improving PSHE.
ACCOUNTABILITY, AMBITIOUS FOR EVERY CHILD
This embeds measures already announced, based on progress and
destination measures. Inspection will focus on underperformance,
with increased accountability to parents and governors and
performance tables for Multi Academy Trusts.
The EBP is urging businesses across Lincolnshire and
Rutland to provide work experience opportunities.
RIGHT RESOURCES IN THE RIGHT PLACE, FUNDING
SPENT WHERE IT CAN DO THE MOST GOOD
A new national funding formula is designed to improve
effectiveness of the pupil premium. Better support will help
schools deliver value for money, maintaining the school estate
to a high standard.
PROJECT LUMEN SHINES A LIGHT
Linking education and business to brighten young futures
The EBP is delighted to launch Project
Lumen, which will help 2,700 young people
in Lincolnshire to interact with business
leaders, to raise awareness and interest in
the range of careers on offer.
According to The EBP’s Beth Curtis, the
project takes a ‘360 degrees’ approach,
working with the full range of influencers
on a young person’s readiness to enter
the workforce; from parents and family to
teachers and school governors, further
and higher education institutions, local
businesses and prospective employers.
LEADING
THE WAY
‘Your Voice’ is raised
for Northamptonshire
Young Leaders
Every two years, Northamptonshire
young people aged 13-19 (20-25 with
additional needs) stand for election
to become Young Leaders, who will
represent their peers at council meetings
and other forums. From 2016 The EBP
is proud to have successfully tendered
to deliver the innovative programme for
Northamptonshire County Council.
06
Project Lumen has been awarded support
from the Careers & Enterprise Company
(CEC), as part of a national scheme to help
prepare 11-18 year olds across England for
the world of work.
The Careers & Enterprise Fund will
support “organisations with a proven
track record of providing career and
enterprise support so that they can
scale up and increase coverage, filling
the gaps in provision across England.”
Announced by Education Secretary Nicky
Morgan MP last year, the Careers &
Enterprise Company is an employer led
body set up to “unlock the potential of
Britain’s young people by strengthening
interactions between employers and
schools”. The Careers & Enterprise Fund
targets providers with a track record of
success and the ability to scale up, add
value and do more. It will focus on areas of
greatest need, with 75% of funding directed
to so-called ‘cold spot’ areas.
Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce Chief
Executive Simon Beardsley is enthusiastic
about the scheme: “Our members are eager
to lend energy and expertise to this project,
because we expect it to benefit the local
economy, as well as young people in the
communities we serve.”
The EU referendum and US election
will provide real-world context and the
programme will be promoted with new,
youth-led branding, to attract greater
participation and increased engagement
from local young people.
High-energy lunchtime sessions in
schools will create excitement, after which
interested students can create a campaign
video outlining their electoral manifesto,
which will be hosted on a dedicated
website. Candidates will be encouraged to
select a key issue to campaign on, and to
utilise the range of communications tools
available to them.
The Young Leaders’ preparation will
start with a bang, with the Your Voice
conference offering a one-day taste of the
democratic process in action. Using the
manifesto from their election campaign as
a platform, each leader will form a political
party for the day by inviting young people
from their constituency. Teamwork will be
essential to creating the campaigns, while
understanding the need to represent,
facilitate and consult will be crucial to
debating the issues. A ‘Twitter storm’ on
the day will demonstrate the importance
of compelling messages, powerful writing
and strong networks to the decision
making process.
Schools have been chosen to benefit
from Project Lumen according to the
CEC’s prioritisation indicators. The EBP
will leverage best practice expertise in
the field of developing young people’s
employability, as well as its network of over
15,000 local businesses.
Herman Kok, Chairman of the Greater
Lincolnshire Employment and Skills Board,
is another supporter: “The local business
community is keen to find ways to engage
with both young people and educators, and
we regard Project Lumen as a standout
opportunity to support quality learning and
progression into work.”
The project team will contact the 29
selected schools in early June, but
all schools should watch for more
opportunities as the programme rolls out.
For more information contact the
team at lumen@the-ebp.co.uk or
01522 574166
Representatives from district, borough
and county councils will attend the
event as mentors, giving early exposure
to the Young Leaders’ new networks.
Involving national political figures will
add a further dimension: Minister for
Skills Nick Boles MP attended the
conference held in Lincolnshire last
year, as well as parliamentary candidates
and representatives from across the
political spectrum.
The purpose of the Young Leaders
programme is to engage young people
in the electoral process; to give them a
sense of ownership as they become better
informed about how democracy works.
Based in The EBP’s new Northampton
office, the team will be in touch with
Northamptonshire schools soon to help
identify candidates and organise events.
KNIGHTS MARCH
ON LINCOLN
AGAIN IN 2017
Blazing a new trail through the city’s history
Following the success of the Magna
Carta barons last year, Lincoln Business
Improvement Group (BIG) has launched
plans for its 2017 Lincoln Knights’ Trail, to
commemorate the 800th anniversary of
the Battle of Lincoln Fair and the sealing
of the Charter of the Forest. Delighted
to be appointed as official education
partner, The EBP will get schools involved
with a ‘mini trail’ and a special education
programme on the historical theme.
Even bigger and better than last year’s
Lincoln Barons’ Trail, the Knights’ Trail
will feature 35 sculptures that businesses
will sponsor to be painted by local artists
and displayed around the city. Several
organisations have already committed
to sponsoring a knight. Like the barons,
the knight figures were created by Wild in
Art’s Chris Wilkinson and will be perfect
canvases to showcase local artistic talent.
The EBP’s role is to have around 60
half-size knights created, ready to be
designed and painted by local schools.
Each participating school will receive
education packs and lesson plans
about this compelling moment in
Lincoln’s history. The smaller knights
will also be displayed around the city
in a miniature trail, and will be returned
to the sponsoring schools when the
trail concludes.
Lincoln BIG chief executive
Matt Corrigan said,
The historical theme behind
the trail offers us a superb
opportunity to launch an
education programme
alongside, with The EBP,
and get schools involved
across Lincolnshire.”
Schools can stake their claim on a
knight now! In addition to the activity‘s
academic and artistic value, it will help to
satisfy the curricular demand to include
‘fundamental British values’.
The 2015 Barons’ Trail was a great success
with locals, tourists and sponsors,
raising £167,000 for charity when the
sculptures were auctioned. At the end of
the even bigger 2017 trail, the knights will
also be auctioned at Lincoln Cathedral.
Two-thirds of the proceeds will go to The
Nomad Trust to build accommodation
for homeless people.
Said The EBP’s Suzy Stone,
We know there is an appetite
to follow in the barons’
footsteps and we’re proud
to be part of this bigger and
better celebration of our city.
It’s a great opportunity for
the county’s students to learn
about Lincoln’s place in history.”
The First Barons’ War of the English
succession took a new turn in 1216
when the future Louis VIII of France
entered London and was proclaimed
King of England. He was supported by
various English barons, who resisted
the rule of King John. When John died
in the middle of the war, his 9 year-old
son Henry III was crowned.
The Second Battle of Lincoln,
otherwise known as the Battle of
Lincoln Fair, took place on 20 May
1217 between the forces of Prince
Louis and those of King Henry III, and
saw the English steal a decisive defeat
from the French. Lincoln’s citizens
were loyal to Louis, so Henry’s forces
sacked the city and the looting that
took place afterwards became known
as the ‘Lincoln Fair’.
Issued in November 1217 to
complement the Magna Carta, which
had dealt with the rights of barons, the
Charter of the Forest provided some
real rights, privileges and protections
for the common man against the
abuses of the aristocracy. It granted
free men the right to graze their
animals in forests that had previously
been reserved for hunting by the king.
In 2017 Lincoln will be the only place
where the Magna Carta and Charter of
the Forest can be seen side by side.
Aiming to develop a better understanding
of food, farming and sustainability in young
people, Lincolnshire Agricultural Society
and The EBP are working together on the
challenge for the tenth year. School teams
research and present on a topic from a
list of options ranging from devising
menus for healthy school meals, to
planning improvements to a local piece of
land; comparing the way crops are grown
around the globe to reducing their school’s
carbon footprint.
The students will compete for the title of
The Lincolnshire Show Schools’ Challenge
Champion and trophies will be awarded
to the winners in The Exhibition Hall on
SEEDS FROM SPACE
The EBP’s Suzy Stone was inspired by
the Mission Principia campaign’s ‘Rocket
Science’ activity, and extended it into a
schools’ challenge for the show called
‘Mission 321… Grow’, in which students
cultivate and compare rocket seeds from
two batches: one that has been taken to the
International Space Station and back, and
one that has stayed on Earth.
The UK Space Agency has partnered
with the Royal Horticultural Society in
Rocket Science: an educational project
that gives UK children the chance to
become space biologists.
As part of British astronaut Tim Peake’s
mission, 2kg of rocket seeds were sent to
the International Space Station (ISS) and
returned, so that thousands of schools
could take part in a national science
experiment to compare those seeds
with seeds that had stayed on Earth.
Participating schools each received two
packets of 100 seeds to grow and compare.
On 18 April, Tim Peake sent a message
from the ISS, 400km above our planet’s
pupils taking part in the project are the
young people who will help mankind
reach the next big milestones in space
exploration for the benefit of people
Construction Week
27-29 September
Autumn brings another
opportunity for young people
to engage with real-world
applications for STEM subjects:
Construction Week is The EBP’s joint event
with Lincoln Group Training Association
(LGTA), where primary pupils have the
chance to ‘build’ skills from stonemasonry
to decorating and joinery on 27 September,
and secondary schools roll up their sleeves
on 28 and 29 September.
Red STEM
13 June
This year we are excited to be working
with Countdown’s numbers expert
Rachel Riley! An Oxford graduate in
mathematics, Riley’s prolific television
career has helped to raise the profile
of young women with STEM skills across the UK.
The day at RAF Scampton will be bigger than
ever, with interactive exhibits showcasing exciting
career opportunities in these, as well as thrilling displays
of aeronautic excellence from the Red Arrows. Since this
event is oversubscribed every year, participating
schools are preselected. Expressions of interest are
invited from schools for 2017.
The Sir Isaac Newton lecture continues its longstanding
link with the Royal Air Force College Cranwell with this
year’s speaker Abbie Hutty, senior spacecraft structures
engineer at Airbus Defence and Space.
The lecture aims to inspire students in key stages 4
and 5 with insights into the way science, technology,
engineering and mathematics are applied in the real
world, and to increase awareness of the varied careers
available in these fields.
Abbie Hutty is an established supporter and
promoter of STEM subjects as both a mentor and
STEM Ambassador. She was the Institution of
Mechanical Engineers (IMecheE) Young Member
of the year 2013, the Institution of Engineering
and Technology (IET) Young Woman Engineer
of 2013, and received the 2014 Royal Academy
of Engineering Rising Star award.
Places for this very popular, free event are awarded
on a first come first served basis.
MEET
THE TEAM!
Introducing the NCS contact centre
An exciting part of our National Citizen
Service (NCS) programme, The EBP’s
contact centre team follows up on
expressions of interest made by young
people at recruitment events.
A mix of NCS graduates and mentors, the
team includes the best people to explain
the programme to young people and their
parents or guardians. Team members
can answer any questions, arrange for
additional information to be sent out by
email, SMS or post, and offer helpful
guidance on completing their signup.
The team came into being after we
found that young people and their
families often prefer to talk through any
questions and concerns about taking
part with someone who has direct,
personal experience of the programme.
They aim to make contact within seven
days of receiving an expression of
interest, and will also follow up with
anyone who hasn’t completed their
signup process as programme-start
approaches, until all available places
are filled.
Everyone signed up to NCS earlier in
the year will receive a call in the run
up to their start date, to inform them
about upcoming welcome events and
with updates on what’s in store. NCS is
designed to be exciting, challenging but
above all fun. The contact centre team is
another way for The EBP to check in with
participants, answer any questions and
allay any concerns they may have.
The contact centre team reports for duty on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday from 16:30 to 20:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00.
Reach them on 01522 574101
Thank you
The EBP is a social enterprise
developing the skills of young
people in communities in the East
Midlands and beyond. We are
proud to support young people
across the counties, to build on
the skills they need to thrive.
We would like to thank the 300 primary
schools and more than 250 secondary
schools, special schools and colleges
that participate in The EBP’s services.
We also thank the thousands of local
and national businesses that help us to
deliver our programmes and events.
The EBP is all about partnership. We
look forward to continuing to work
with schools, businesses, agencies
and institutions, providing support
to even more young people to build
better futures.
