As outlined in chapter 3 <strong>of</strong> part 1 <strong>of</strong> this report (“<strong>The</strong> <strong>Furniture</strong> Sector”), the Barbadian furniture<br />

sector will be competitive in niche markets rather than in mass markets to be covered by<br />

economies <strong>of</strong> scale. Design and quality oriented production has to find a match in well selected<br />

export markets. In the U.S. market, niche products are experiencing rapid fluctuations.<br />

Preferences are changing quickly; there are seasonal changes every year. Especially the large<br />

furniture retailing chains function as trend setters for the market.<br />

In terms <strong>of</strong> volume, the U.S. market’s most important furniture consuming states are: California,<br />

Florida, Texas, New York and Illinois, with California consuming twice as much as<br />

the second largest consumers (Texas and Florida) (see Graph 1). Most important furniture<br />

importing states in the USA are also the large-scale consumers (Graph 2).<br />
