your family entertained over the summer holidays in our WOW, What’s 

on and Where, section. There are many more great events going on 

across our region that we could not fit into this issue which you can

Our Summer Holiday Fun feature offers lots to do in the holidays. 

From a festival of fireworks at Catton Hall, enjoying the family 

friendly two day Gloworm Festival, a visit to the museum to a day out 

watching trucks race at Donington – there is something for everyone 

in our magazine. On a quiet afternoon why not host your own picnic 

and celebrate trees – see page 31 for more details, don’t forget to 

check out the beach at intu Derby and to enrol your children in a fun 

summer camp.

Summer Holiday Club 2016 

Join Us This Summer! 

Once again Schools Out Club are running their popular Summer Holiday Club 

from Friday 27th July to 2nd September at St Benedict’s School, plus 5 th & 

6 th September at St John’s, for ages 3 to 14 years. It offers separate areas 

for younger and older children, fabulous facilities and resources, and lots of 

fun indoor and outdoor activities and trips children love to do during the long 

summer holidays. 

Craft, cookery, and sports activities will be available every day giving children 

the opportunity to practice their skills whilst learning interesting facts, use their 

imagination and make new friends. Each week will see a different theme to 

the activities and special events: Mystical Mysteries, Rio 2016, Jungle Book, 

West End, Charity Challenge, Hawaiian Hullabaloo, Fashion Week and Star 

Academy. Children will especially enjoy the mini-Olympics to celebrate the 

start of the Olympics, the chance to take part in their very own Wet End show, 

fun activities aimed at helping Charities whilst having fun, themed party time, 

teddy bear picnics and onsite dance classes & football academy. There’ll be a 

pamper night, schools out got talent!, night @ the movies, junior masterchef & 

bake-off, water fights, and 4 brand new bouncy castles for the bouncy castle 

room this summer. 

Also on offer will be a varied selection of optional trips. Perhaps they would 

like a day out at Tutbury Castle with a Knights & Armour workshop & treasure 

hunt or to go exploring at Carsington Water They can get close to the animals 

at National Adventure Farm or Chatsworth House & Farm, burn off some 

energy on the huge play areas, and don’t forget National Adventure Farm’s 

amazing maze. Action packed days are promised at Conkers and Wheelgate 

all-weather them park, with thrilling attractions & huge indoor and outdoor play 

areas. Energetic fun trips are planned to Tenpin Bowling, Megazone, Laser 

Combat, Pure Fitness training and Rollerworld, plus there’ll be time to see one 

of the latest films at the Cinema. A traditional summer’s day out with picnic & 

ice-cream at Darley Park, and for the younger ones Hickory Dickory soft play 

centre are also in diary.

Our Survival in the Wilderness Weekend offers a fun, adventurous

There’s no better place to entertain all the family this summer than 

Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire. 

Bolsover Castle is taking visitors back to 1066 in back to back events to 

kick off the summer. Meet the Normans on Saturday 23- Sunday 24 July 

is a large scale outdoor event where families can watch them fight from 

horseback and enjoy a Norman falconry display. This is swiftly followed 

by the children’s event Norman Knight Time Monday 25- Friday 29 July 

where little ones can put all they’ve learnt into practice. 

August sees the children’s summer holidays in full swing, and Bolsover 

Castle is full to bursting with events to keep them entertained. They can 

discover what it takes to be a solider at Roundheads and Cavaliers 

on Monday 1- Friday 5, as they take part in the Civil War in King Charles

The British Truck 

Racing Championship 

The British Truck Racing Championship at Donington Park 

on 23-24 July is one of the most exciting forms of motorsport in 

the world, with massive trucks going wheel to wheel at speeds of 

100mph! 

These monster machines might look like the ones you’ll see 

transporting heavy loads on the motorway, but are highly 

modified and can hit 100mph faster than a sports car! With 

daredevil drivers at the wheel, they always put on an exciting show, 

with power slides and smoke billowing off the tyres! 

Exciting race formats including reverse grids mean there’s always 

lots of overtaking, even though these are the biggest racing 

machines in the world, and the heaviest! The drivers aren’t afraid to 

use a bit of contact to get past their rivals, and with lots of viewing 

areas around the Donington circuit you’ll have plenty of great 

opportunities to see the action. 

With lots of off track entertainment to enjoy, and activities for 

kids including racing simulators, trampolines, bouncy castles and 

climbing walls, it’s guaranteed to be a fun day out for all the family.

Derby. Markeaton Park is one of the most popular parks in the

In July and August it will also host outdoor theatre and cinema

Brand New Family Festival 

Nottinghamshire is set to be the home of a brand new family music 

festival bringing music, art and entertainment to your doorstep. 

Clumber Park is preparing itself to host the Gloworm Festival at its 

National Trust beauty spot. 

The Gloworm festival is aimed at families with children of all ages. 

It’s a festival that will inspire the imaginations of its attendees, both

A Festival of Fireworks! 

The Festival of Fireworks was inaugurated in 1999 at Shugborough 

Hall – featuring five British companies who were given the opportunity 

to demonstrate their work alongside each other. The event, the first 

of its kind in the UK, proved to be a success, with each participant 

making a great effort to show off their pyrotechnic design skills. 

Seventeen years on, the Festival of Fireworks is now well-established 

as one of the premier events in the annual fireworks calendar, 

attracting thousands of spectators to its new home in the elegant 

grounds of Catton Hall in South Derbyshire. 

In recent years, the Festival has acquired something of an international 

flavour – with firework display teams from europe and the far-east 

making an appearance. The 2016 event will feature Hamex Piroteknia 

from Slovenia, Alchemy Fireworks from Luton, Chichester-based 

Selstar and festival organisers Jubilee Fireworks, whose outstanding 

displays are seen at many major UK venues, including Alton Towers. 

The Festival of Fireworks offers the opportunity to experience for 

yourself spectacular and stunning examples of the art of pyrotechnics 

from some of the world’s best display companies. Ideal for a family

BMX British Championships

The British BMX Championships is by far the 

biggest event on the UK domestic calendar. 

With over 1,000 competitors in action across 

the weekend, there’s a real festival style 

atmosphere as racers compete for glory and 

the awards for the season’s achievements

Sports & Saloon Car Races (BRSCC) 


Saloon car action comes from the Alfashop 

Alfa Romeo Championship, which will 

pitch big grids of iconic Italian machinery 

against each other, with similar action from 

the BMW Compact Cup. Sports prototypes, 

similar in look to those seen at Le Mans will 

race in the Excool OSS Championship, with 

further sports car drama from the BRSCC 

Porsche Championship and the big grids 

of the Mazda MX5 Supercup. Single seater 

action will come from the BRSCC Formula 

Ford 1600 series, a formula responsible for 

spawning many Formula One stars past and

all Ages 


2:30pm- 4:00pm What was it like to live and 

work in Richard Arkwright’s Cromford? This 

workshop is aimed at children aged 7-11 

who must be accompanied by an adult. 

Children will have the opportunity to dress 

up in millworkers’ costumes before stepping 

back in time and learning about the jobs 

in the mills and the way of life in Georgian

Bark in the Park Fun Dog Show
