And the winner of Warwickshire’s
Junior Fire Safety Champion goes
to Matilda
Matilda Spencer from St. Lawrence
C of E Primary School, was
Warwickshire County Council’s Fire
and Rescue Services Junior Fire
Safety Champion in May.
For her enthusiasm and knowledge,
Matilda was presented with a trophy
and a £25 WH Smith voucher during
her school assembly. The presentation
was carried out by Community Fire
Safety Officer, Tony Harris.
During their school visit from the Fire
and Rescue Service in April, Matilda
used her fire safety knowledge and
spotted potential fire hazards in her
own home.
During the school visit for year five
pupils, fire crews talk about smoke
alarms, kitchen and electrical safety
and a night time ‘turn it off’ routine.
The session also includes a hazard
spotting exercise, where the crew give
pupils all the information and skills
they need to carry out a fire safety
check at home.
Pupils are then asked to complete a
safety check for real. They can do this
in their own home, at grandparents,
or a relative’s house. Once complete,
the school award the children with
a Junior Fire Safety Champion
Certificate.
All the safety checks are then sent into
the Fire Service for a monthly prize
draw to award the title of Junior Fire
Safety Champion.
All over the UK, libraries are
celebrating 100 years of the world’s
favourite storyteller, Roald Dahl.
The Big Friendly Read, the Summer
Reading Challenge 2016, is your
child’s chance to join in those
celebrations.
The Summer Reading
Challenge takes place every year
during the summer holidays. Children
can sign up at your local library, then
read six books of their choice to
complete the Challenge. There are
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue
Service’s Schools Liaison Officer, Ruth
Greenhalgh said:
“I am delighted that Matilda was
presented with the Junior Fire Safety
Champion trophy and prize.
We educate young people about fire
safety in a fun and creative way. We
ask pupils to take home what they
have learnt and put it into practice.
This gives them the confidence to
ensure their safety and those around
them.”
Portfolio Holder for Community Safety,
Councillor John Horner said:
“I would like to say well done to
Matilda on her Junior Fire Safety
Champion Certificate and prize and
for taking part in the Junior Fire Safety
Champion Scheme. The scheme
provides the Service with a great way
of engaging with young people from
a very early age. It’s clear from the
enthusiasm from the pupils and the
schools taking part, that it is of real
benefit to all involved.”
Cllr Matt Western, Chair of the
council’s Communities Overview and
Scrutiny Committee, added:
“I would like to congratulate Matilda
on receiving her trophy and I
hope that she is able to share the
knowledge that she has gained with
family and friends to help ensure that
they can also stay fire safe.”
exclusive rewards to collect along the
way, and it’s FREE to take part!
Each child is asked to read at least 6
library books. They can be any books
they like- novels, fact books, joke
books, e-books and audio books, they
all count- and your library staff can
help your children choose books they
will really enjoy.
As they read their books, each child
will receive collector cards that make
up a set to complete their folder.
Local Juniors
win county
Champions of
Champions
Two youngsters from Coleshill
Primary School have become road
safety Champions of Champions.
The annual competition, organised
by Warwickshire County Council’s
Road Safety Team is to celebrate
the work of Junior Road Safety
Officers (JRSO’s) throughout the
county.
This year’s Year 6 winners,
Renee and Annabelle, impressed
road safety judges with their
commitment to the scheme and
innovative ideas they:
· Ran a road safety club for
KS1 children
· Made up a road safety
song and members of the
club sang it in assembly
· Made up a road safety
Arty Tots
Vicki Cureton, the Arty Tots
Organiser for Heritage and Culture
Warwickshire, manages a team of
six volunteers whose input is as
valued as it is crucial.
Arty Tots meets every Monday at
Market Hall Museum, Warwick,
and invites grandparents and their
under-five-year-old grandchildren to
play games, get crafty and enjoy
fun times together.
A regular gathering of grandparents
attends the group which has been running for two years
and proved a real success – powered, in large part, by volunteers.
“Our volunteers are vital to Arty Tots,” said Vicki. “Without them and
their many talents I could not deliver the sessions. Lin, Jane, Gill,
Julie, Edwina and Barbara make Arty Tots the success it is. They all
deserve gold medals.
“The families and volunteers have all become good friends and really
look forward to Monday mornings.”
Volunteers are integral to the sessions. They prepare them
beforehand, ensure the families have everything they need (and
join in, sometimes leading the storytelling or singing!) then provide
refreshments, socialise and tidy away at the end.
“Our volunteers provide a fun-filled and sociable event for
grandparents and their grandchildren to enjoy,” said Vicki. “They
ensure our families have a safe, relaxing environment within the
museum.”
The lovely atmosphere at the group makes volunteering a joy, says
Lin Pilkington (pictured), who been has involved since the start.
Every card features an original
piece of Quentin Blake artwork
from a classic Roald Dahl tale, as
well as some fun activities on the
reverse. These build to become
a unique record of your child’s
Summer Reading Challenge,
and a great way to mark Dahl’s
centenary. Some cards feature fun
SCRATCH and SNIFF smells for
young readers to discover.
Kids are going to love collecting
these.
game for younger children
· Made road safety biscuits
and sold them for school
funds
· Regularly kept in touch
with the road safety team
to update them about what
they had been up to.
Mr Kershaw, Head of Coleshill
Primary School said: “We are very
proud of Renee and Annabel,
and what they have achieved this
year. The road safety work they
have done in school has been
exceptional and we are delighted
that this has been recognised.”
Alison Williams, Senior Road
Safety Officer and manager of the
JRSO scheme in Warwickshire
said: “The standard of Junior
Road Safety Officers was high
again this year, but we chose
Renee and Annabel because of
their consistency and passion for
helping other children learn about
road safety.”
The JRSOs win a trip to the British
Motor Museum at Gaydon.
Parents say: “It inspired my son to
read over the summer when he was
losing interest in reading at school.”
Teachers say: “Children usually drop
a reading level when returning to
school after the summer. After the
Summer Reading Challenge, they
often are a level ahead!”
Get set for the
Olympics
It really is hard to believe that it’s
four years since the Queen and James Bond
parachuted into history during the 2012
Summer Olympic Games in London. (Yes,
we know it wasn’t really the Queen and that
James Bond is an actor called Daniel Craig!).
This year the Olympic torch passes to Brazil
where the Games of the XXXI Olympiad
(commonly known as Rio 2016) will take place
in Rio de Janeiro. For many athletes this is the
goal they have been training for, not only for
the past four years, but in some cases, most
of their lives. The 2016 Summer Olympic
program features 28 sports, 41 disciplines and
306 events. The games organizers expect to
host over 10,500 athletes from 206 countries.
British athletes have competed at every single
Olympic games since they were revived by
Baron Pierre du Coubertin in 1896. Coubertin
drew his inspiration from the Ancient Olympic
games which took place every four years from
the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The
origins of these games are shrouded in
mystery and many theories have been given
for their existence. Scholars can’t even
pinpoint exactly when they began but 776 BC
is the most widely accepted date. (Similarly,
there is no agreement about when these
ancient Games stopped – the date that is most
agreed on is 393 AD).
same year as the Summer Games but since
then they now take place on a four-year cycle
two years after the Summer Games.
The genesis of the Paralympics came in 1948
when Sir Ludwig Guttman, in an effort to
promote rehabilitation of soldiers wounded in
World War II, organized a multi-sport event to
coincide with the London Summer Games of
that year. This event became known as the
International Wheelchair Games. In 1960
Guttman brought 400 athletes to compete in
‘Parallel Olympics’ alongside the Summer
Olympics in Rome - an event that ultimately
became the first Paralympics. Since then the
Paralympics has been held every four years
alongside the Summer Games and, since
1988, in the same host city. The Youth Games
began in 2010 to accommodate athletes
aged 14-18.
The Olympic Games have been constantly
evolving since 1896 and many of the symbols
associated with the games have been added
during the years since. The Olympic flag with
the iconic five intertwined rings was first
adopted in 1914. The five rings (blue, yellow,
black, red and green) symbolize the five
continents Africa, Asia, America, Oceania and
Europe. The Olympic Torch relay was
introduced in 1936 at the Berlin Games.
This year, the torch began its journey in April
when it was lit at a ceremony in Southern
Greece and spent a week travelling the country
to Athens. It arrives in Brazil on 3rd May and
will then embark on a 95-day tour of Brazil,
visiting 83 cities, 26 state capitals and 500
towns. It is estimated that the torch will reach
90% of the population while covering
approximate 20,000 kilometres (over 12,000
miles) of the country by road and 16,000
(approximately 9,940 miles) by air. The torch
relay will involve around 12,000 torchbearers
and will end at the Maracanä Stadium in Rio
on 5th August for the Games Opening
Ceremony.
Most people will watch the Games on
television. The first live TV broadcast was
in Germany in 1936, but only for a local
audience. The first international TV broadcast
came 20 years later with the 1956 Winter
Olympics in Cortina, Italy. In 2012
approximately 900 million people watched
all or part of the opening ceremony of the
London Summer Games on television.
Anne Marie Scanlon for Primary Times
The ancient Olympics took place in the
sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, Greece, hence
the name. These games were primarily
religious in origin and competitors came from
different, and rival, Greek factions. Baron de
Coubertin founded the International Olympic
Committee in 1894 and the very first modern
Olympic Games took place in Athens two
years later. The first games had participants
from 14 nations with 241 athletes taking part in
43 events. In the 2016 Games in Rio
competitors from Team GB will tackle,
amongst other events, Boxing, Canoeing,
Cycling, Track, Diving & Swimming, Equestrian
events, Hockey, Fencing, Football, Golf,
Gymnastics, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting
and Weightlifting.
By Robbie Dale (Flickr: Sir Chris Hoy)
Since it’s inception the Olympic movement has
grown to include Winter Games, the
Paralympics and the Youth Games. The Winter
Olympics began in 1924 to accommodate
sports that take place on snow and ice. Until
1992 the Winter Olympics were held in the
Many British athletes have taken home medals since the Games began. Cyclist Chris
Hoy has won the most gold medals for Britain with 6, he also took home a silver. Hoy won three
of his gold medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics becoming the first British athlete to take
top prize three times in one year since swimmer Henry Taylor in 1908. Rower Steve Redgrave
took home gold medals in five consecutive games from 1984. Redgrave also won a bronze
medal. Cyclist Bradley Wiggins has seven Olympic medals – 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze.
Guide
Ice Age: Collision Course
Family favourites Manny the Mammoth, Diego the Saber Tooth Tiger and Sid the
Sloth return to screens this summer, along with Scrat the Saber Tooth Squirrel
on his never-ending quest for his acorn.
Scrat’s epic pursuit of the elusive
acorn catapults him into the universe
where he accidentally sets off a series
of cosmic events that transform and
threaten the Ice Age World. To save
themselves, Sid, Manny, Diego, and the
rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a quest full of comedy
and adventure, travelling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of
colourful new characters. But, at least as far as Sid is concerned, the impending
apocalypse is rather less important than finding a new girlfriend.
Journey back to prehistory once more for ‘Ice Age: Collision Course’. The latest
entry in the hugely successful franchise hits UK cinemas on 15 July.
Still Swimming
When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar-winning film “Finding
Nemo”, she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could
remember). Now the beloved blue tang fish is the star of her very own
film, “Finding Dory”, out in cinemas on 29 July.
After her adventures with Marlin and Nemo, Dory suddenly
remembers that she has a family out there who may be
looking for her and the trio take off on a life-changing
adventure across the ocean to California’s Marine Life
Institute (MLI), a rehabilitation centre and aquarium. In an
effort to find her Mum and Dad, Dory enlists the help of
three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents: Hank, a cantankerous
octopus who frequently gives employees the slip; Bailey, a beluga whale who is
convinced his echolocation skills are on the blink; and Destiny, a near sighted whale
shark. Audiences will dive back into the extraordinary underwater world of “Finding
Nemo” as they watch Dory being reunited with her loved ones and learn a few
things about the meaning of family along the way.
Swallows and Amazons
Watch the modern adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s much loved novel – a
story of daring adventure and exploration as four children set off on the
summer holiday of a life-time.
Swallows and Amazons follows four
children who dream of escape from
the tedium of a summer holiday
with their mother. When finally
given permission to camp on their
own remote island in the middle of
a vast lake, they are overjoyed. But
when they get there, they discover
they may not be alone.
As a desperate battle for ownership of the island ensues, the real dangers of
an adult world on the brink of war encroach on their paradise in the form
of a mysterious pair of Russian spies hot on the tail of the enigmatic Jim
Turner. As the sleepy British summer is turned on its head, the children must
learn skills of survival, responsibility, and the all-important value of friendship.
Steeped in the wonder of a child’s imagination and set against the breathtaking
backdrop of the Lakes, this is an exhilarating adaptation of a treasured
classic. Swallows and Amazons will hit UK cinemas on 19 August.
An Outback Adventure
Blinky Bill is a koala with a big imagination. An adventurer at heart, he dreams
of leaving the little town of Greenpatch and following in his explorer father’s
footsteps. Mr Bill went missing in the Outback some time ago and Blinky is the
only one who believes his father is still alive.
When Blinky discovers a mysterious
marker that hints at his Dad’s
whereabouts, he embarks on a
journey that takes him into the
dangerous Outback. He quickly makes
friends with Nutsy, a zoo koala, and
Jacko, a nervous frill-necked lizard.
Pursued relentlessly by a vengeful cat
who has a personal score to settle with
Blinky, the trio must learn to work together if they ever want to survive the rugged
Australian landscape and fi nd Blinky’s father.
Join cheeky Aussie koala Blinky Bill as he goes on the adventure of a lifetime when
Blinky Bill: The Movie comes to cinemas nationwide on 19 August.
Pete’s Dragon
A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, “Pete’s Dragon” is the
adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who
just so happens to be a dragon.
For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham
has delighted local children with his tales
of the fierce dragon that resides deep in
the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To
his daughter, Grace, who works as a forest
ranger, these stories are little more than
tall tales…until she meets Pete. Pete is a
mysterious 10-year-old with no family and
no home who claims to live in the woods
with a giant, green dragon named Elliott.
From Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems
remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr.
Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie,
an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack owns
the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to
determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about
this dragon.
Join Pete and his clumsy, furry green friend as they delight young children
and nostalgic adults alike. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” flies onto UK cinema
screens on 12 August.
The BFG
Two of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl and Steven Spielberg
– have united to bring Dahl’s beloved classic the BFG to life for a new
generation.
The BFG is the exciting tale of a young girl named Sophie who befriends a
mysterious Giant. Despite his intimidating appearance, the Giant turns out
to be a kind-hearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants
because, unlike them, he refuses to
eat children. He introduces Sophie
to the wonders and perils of Giant
Country, as they set out on an
adventure to capture the evil, maneating
giants who have been invading
the human world.
Children will love learning about the
Giant’s world of buckswashling, slimy
snozzcumbers and gravity-defying ‘whizzpopping’ farts. Explore a world of
childlike wonder with a powerful blend of live action and animation. The
BFG is in cinemas from 22 July.
www.primarytimes.net/warwickshire | SUMMER 2016 Issue Primary Times 25
Beat boredom this summer!
At Wilko, we love family time and
with the summer holidays just
around the corner, it’s a great time
to start thinking about activities to
keep the kids (and adults) busy.
Thinking of things to do to keep the 6 weeks
action-packed can seem a bit daunting, and
not to mention costly, but we’ve got some
great ideas that’ll help keep the kids
entertained, making memories that’ll last a
lifetime and all without breaking the bank!
As well as a host of super suggestions,
we’re also giving your little scribblers a
chance to win a Back to School Bumper
Pack, which contains all the essentials,
worth £50. You can find out more by visiting
www.wilko.com/page/colourcomp – so what
are you waiting for? Dig out the colouring
pencils and get them to give it a go!
Start with a holiday planner
Making a plan for each week is a great starting
point. It’ll help keep you organised, space out
activities and give everyone in the family things
to look forward to. It’s also handy when you’re
working to a budget and making arrangements
for any childcare that’s needed – or roping in
the grandparents!
When planning, try and schedule in craft
days, mini sports days or themed activity
days throughout the holidays, leaving little
to no room for the word ‘bored’ to make
an appearance!
Be prepared – whatever
the weather!
We all know that the British weather’s
unpredictable, raining cats and dogs one
minute with glorious sunshine the next! So
make sure you’ve got a few things up your
sleeve – at your local Wilko you’ll find plenty
of activities that can be enjoyed come rain
or shine.
Crafts – Crafting indoors and outdoors can be
great fun, and craft kits are perfect for keeping
kids busy. Visit wilko.com where we’ve got
heaps to choose from, all at fantastic prices.
Our favourite summer holiday heroes include
the bumper craft kit which contains a
whopping 700 pieces for just £5 – why not use
it to create colourful creatures, cool cards and
fantastic photo frames? Our scrapbooks are
also great for keeping little ones entertained all
summer long. Encourage them to stick in bits
and bobs from their summer adventures –
think family pics, tickets from days out and
dried flowers from the garden.
Painting – Kids love getting messy and
painting is a great activity for encouraging
kids to get creative. Use our colourful
child-friendly paints to make hand prints, foot
prints, beautiful portraits and more! You could
even roll out a length of lining paper and get
the whole family to run along it with painted
feet... you may not make a masterpiece,
but it’ll be a priceless family keepsake and
a whole load of fun!
Be a good sport
It’s set to be a summer of sport with Euro 2016
in France and the Olympic Games in Rio,
which may inspire your little ones to kick a ball
about, run around the garden or throw a
javelin... ok, maybe not the last one!
Little ones love an assault course, and they’re
super easy to set up. You’ll just need a bit of
equipment like a hoop to climb through, a ball
to kick or throw into a goal and somewhere to
run. It’s a great way to get the kids to use their
imagination and burn off a bit of energy.
Check out your local store or visit us online
at wilko.com where you’ll find a huge range
of outdoor equipment – everything from
trampolines to tennis sets, pools to
playhouses!
Wow
£12!
Little hands, green fingers...
There are bound to be some warm, dry days,
so why not get the kids to help out in the
garden? Gardening’s a great activity for all
ages – if you can spare the space, dedicate a
small patch that’s just for the kids, and get
them started with our great range of compost,
seeds and tools.
Pass the summer holiday
test with flying colours!
Research shows that even a bit of learning
during the summer can help kids get ahead,
no matter what their age. And to give you a
helping hand, we’ve got a great range of
exercise and activity books, covering
everything from basic phonics to Key Stage
2 English, Science and Maths.
After all that learning, why not relax with a bit of
colouring? It’s a fantastically calming activity
that also encourages creativity, which is crucial
to your little one’s development – and it’s also
great for helping adults to de-stress! So, pop
into your local store where you’ll find a fantastic
range of colouring books, activity books and
stationery. For more ideas to keep the kids
busy this summer check out our blog – life.
wilko.com. And when it’s time to go back to
school, visit your local Wilko store or wilko.com
for all your stationery essentials.
