Dear Parents/Carers and Friends,
I SSUE 2 J UNE 2016
I am delighted with the outcome of the Ofsted visit
which, as you know, took place at Irlam & Cadishead
College on 17 th and 18 th May, 2016. Lead Inspector,
‘Leaders and managers are taking effective action
These are exciting and encouraging times and this
Ofsted Report acknowledges the progress being made
and is evidence of the hard work, commitment of staff,
students and support from our parents and carers. I am
both proud and appreciative of the efforts and support
made by all.
Message from the Chair of Governors
You will know by now that we had our second Ofsted monitoring visit on 17th and 18th May and all parents
should have had the opportunity of reading the Ofsted letter when we sent it home to you before
the holiday. The letter has now been published on both the Ofsted and the College websites.
We were really pleased that Ofsted now judge that ' Leaders and managers are taking effective action
towards the removal of special measures'. This is a big step forward for the College and our students.
Ofsted have acknowledged that progress is being made and that there is evidence of the hard work,
commitment of staff, students and parents and Carers.
Following the last Ofsted visit, the Principal, the governors, the local authority and Salford Academy Trust
needed to take more rapid and decisive action, which has happened and these actions have also been
externally quality assured by a number of recognised experts to ensure we are implanting rigorously
where needed.
Ofsted in particular commented on the 'strong focus on improving teaching and learning', the 'careers
information and guidance programme for pupils in key stage 4 is of good quality' and 'the quality of
teaching is improving'. Positive comments were made about the changes to student services with ' a
good humoured, nurturing approach that pupils appreciate'. 'Pupils attendance ... and behaviour is improving',
' better progress is being made by pupils who are currently in key stage 3, in response to higher
expectations of teachers and better planning of learning'.
More work is still needed in pupils’ achievements and narrowing 'the gap in performance between disadvantaged
pupils and their peers' and 'the performance of pupils currently in year 10 is more promising'.
There is further work to do in making sure that' pupils get a clear picture about what success looks like'
and making sure that pupils produce work of the highest standard. So whilst we are proud and appreciative
of the efforts by all, we will continue to drive forward for the rest of this school year.
We have been busy recruiting staff this year to ensure that there are the right number of teachers for
pupils to have a much more stable staff group over into next year. We have been really lucky so far as a
number of our successful candidates have negotiated early starts with us, so many have been able to arrive
from Easter onwards. Ofsted have been particularly generous in their praise of a number of subjects
and staff, for example we are very proud of the work on the library and the surrounding resource
area.
These are exciting and encouraging times and we look forward to supporting you and your family in the
future. There should be opportunities for a number of parents and carers to visit the school between now
and the end of the school year.
Manchester County FA Under 12’s Girls Futsal Finals
Led by Captain Sophie Lister, ICC Futsal Team went into the Manchester County FA Under 12 Girls
Futsal Finals, flying the flag for Salford against other teams from across Manchester. ICC played
some excellent football throughout the day and finished the group stages with 4 wins from 6 games!
Sophie Lister was top scorer for ICC with 9 goals. The girls progressed to the semi-final stage and
were matched up against Blessed Thomas Holford from Altrincham who they had already beaten in
the group stages. Despite dominating large parts of the game and scoring an early goal, ICC conceded
a goal in the latter stages and the game was decided on penalty kicks.
Dakota Crossley Newsome in the ICC goal saved 3 of BTH’s penalty kicks but unfortunately, it was
not enough to progress to the final as Blessed Thomas Holford ended the shootout 2-1 winners. A
tough way for the girls to exit the competition but they
should be very proud of the way they both performed
and conducted themselves throughout the day.
The Manchester United first-team squad joined local school children, including our very own Year 7
and 8 students, as they took part in an event to celebrate the work of Manchester United Foundation
in the local community. Our students were chosen as a result of their commitment to extracurricular
activities at Irlam & Cadishead College.
ICC students were invited to the club’s Aon Training Complex for what they believed to be solely an
activity afternoon with Foundation coaches, when to their surprise they were joined by their footballing
heroes. Sergio Romero is pictured with the Year 7 and Year 8 Students below.
ICC students participated in a mini 5-a-side competition, winning both of the games they played.
They also participated in many more activities including: table tennis and a penalty shootout.
ICC Welcomes the New Curriculum Leader for English—
Mrs Larsen-Taylor
I first started teaching in 2001 at the original
Irlam & Cadishead Community High School. The school
looked a little different then - there was many an occasion
when I feared the windows would fall out of the frames! But
it was here that I truly fell in love with teaching, and it was
that passion that earned me the position of Advanced Skills
Teacher supporting other schools across Salford, as well as
my own.
After nearly nine years at Irlam & Cadishead Community
High School, and quite a few tears on my part, I moved just
up the road to Salford City Academy as Head of English and
Literacy. Within 12 months we were listed as the second
best English Department in Salford based upon our Raise-
Online data - I spent the next few years striving for that first
place spot!
Students at ICC will be selling ices
during the Summer Term period.
Proceeds will go to Bantangba
Nursery. This will help make a real
impact on the families and children
in The Gambia.
The last two years were spent developing a brand new
school in Atherton - firstly as Assistant Principal for Assessment
and then as Head of Sixth Form; but I missed Salford! I
missed the banter you can only get with Salford students! I
also missed being on the front lines of developing a
successful English Department!
When I saw the Curriculum Leader for English role advertised
at Irlam & Cadishead College I knew it was time to
come home to where it all began. I can't wait to strive once
again for that number one spot in Salford! The ICC English
Department will become a force to be reckoned with; leading
teaching & learning best practices, innovative in our curriculum,
but most importantly, ensuring that every student
is pushed to meet their full potential in a supportive and
caring environment.
The ICT Department was delighted to host a visit from Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Ambassadors
from the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI).
The Ambassadors worked with Year 10 Students to introduce
a range of career opportunities available in the STEM
industries. Students were keen to find out more regarding
careers in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biomedical
Sciences.
ICC is looking forward to working with MOSI and the STEM
Ambassadors in the future.

‘Class of 2016’/Year 11 BTEC Performing Arts students showcased a mixture of brilliant Musical
Theatre Songs. The songs came from famous musicals such as Wicked; Mamma Mia; Les Miserables
and Funny Girl. One student recreated an intriguing and famous Shakespeare Monologue. The work
produced by the students was all rehearsed, produced and performed independently. The work they
chose to share in the evening was work which they spent several weeks producing for their external
exam. This was worth 25% of their overall BTEC grade. Miss Cooper, Head of Drama, said, ‘The
students have shown excellent confidence, organisation and professionalism in their work and I am
the photographer must face in standing back as an ‘observer’. Year 10 have shown great empathy
