2 STIGMA: THE WHAT, WHERE AND HOW
3. Counselling and support for people living with or
affected by HIV
Support can help people living with or affected by
HIV to recognise and deal with self-stigma and to
build resilience to experiences of and perceptions
of stigma.
4. Contact with affected groups
This involves linking the target group for the
intervention with people living with or affected
by HIV.
5. Structural change e.g. change in public policy
For example, introducing laws to protect people
living with HIV from stigma and discrimination as well
as the structural processes to ensure that people
can access their rights.
2.4 Using the HIV stigma framework to design
a strategy for stigma reduction
The diagram in Fig.2 below shows some of the
things to consider when designing an HIV stigma
intervention strategy.
There may be more than one answer to each of
these questions. The key to the success of a
strategy is to ensure that the approach taken is
effective in making the desired changes where
intended – and the best way to do this is to make
use of existing evidence.
Where and with
whom are we trying to
have an effect? e.g. society;
communities; organisations; social
networks; families; individuals
such as people living with or
affected by HIV...
Intervention
strategy
What are we trying to
affect to achieve change?
e.g. stereotypes; knowledge of
HIV; knowledge of HIV-related
stigma; discrimination; punitive
laws; gender norms...
How are we going to
achieve this? e.g. providing
information; skills-building;
increasing empathy through
stories; contact with affected
groups; counselling...
