The Organising Committee for 12th South Asian Games invites designs for the logo and the
mascot for the 12th South Asian Games that is scheduled to take place in India (Guwahati
and Shillong).
The South Asian Games are a bi-annual international multi-sport event held amongst the
athletes from South Asia. The governing body of these Games is South Asian Olympic Council
(SAOC), formed in 1983. At present, the South Asian Olympic Council has eight members
namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The first South Asian Games were hosted by Kathmandu, Nepal in 1983 and have since
been held every two years except for some occasions. India has hosted the South Asian
Games twice, once in 1987 in Kolkata and the other in 1995 in Chennai.
The 12th edition of the South Asian Games is scheduled to be held in December 2015 in
Guwahati (Assam) and Shillong (Meghalaya).
Guwahati is the largest city in Assam and lies between the banks of the Brahmaputra River
and the foothills of the Shillong plateau. Guwahati is a major commercial and educational
hub of Assam and Northeast India and is often known as the Gateway to the North East.
Shillong is the capital and hill station of Meghalaya and is also known as “Abode of Cloud”,
one of the smallest states in India. The city lies in the centre of the Shillong plateau, the only
major uplifted structure in the northern Indian shield and is surrounded by hills.
The South Asian Games will see participation of over 3000 athletes in 22 sports disciplines
which include Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Football, Handball,
Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho Kho, Shooting, Swimming, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo,
Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu. Guwahati will host 15 sports and
the remaining 7 sports will be held in Shillong.
Citizens of India are invited to design a suitable logo and a suitable mascot for 12th South
