WELCOME MESSAGE
H
ello and welcome everyone to Tilsley Park
and to all the players, officials and staff
from our visitors today, the Gloucestershire
All Golds.
A special welcome to our match sponsors Stephen Owen
and The Ultimate Fantasy League who are good friends with
our assistant coach, Chris Baxter. These guys are a group of
devoted rugby league fans supporting the expansion clubs
and your contribution is greatly appreciated. Hope you
guys enjoy your day at Tilsley!
A couple of very positive news snippets to share with
you all and I’m both delighted and proud to say that a
recent audit on the Rugby League Inspires Foundation has
received encouraging feedback. This is part of the Sky
Try partnership and our GM Ryan Cousins, along with his
team of coaches, have delivered a very engaging program
throughout Oxfordshire. We are awaiting official approval
on the work but Ryan had this to say “Generally speaking we
have ticked the boxes and in a few exceeded. The assessors
recognized we have some limited resources but what has
been established with schools and our participation figures
show the determination and commitment of the team to
deliver. We’ve got some good green lights and a few
things to work on but all are constructive points to help the
momentum of the foundation.”
The second piece of good news is with England student
international Charlie Greene who’s now back in the squad.
Charlie has been on duty with England the best part of two
months which the club and coaches have supported. The
positive news is Charlie’s potential has been recognized
and earned him a RL sports scholarship and we’re thrilled
for him and delighted to have him back in the squad. Well
done young man, you are a great example of what honest
hard work can achieve and get you.
Oxford’s ability to help players with its connections and
pathways is still delivering. Head coach Tim Rumford has
created an opportunity for a couple of his lads to train for
a week with our DR partners Castleford Tigers. It will be
a great experience and it is a wonderful example of our
partnerships working off the pitch. It’s a pure opportunity
to impress and I hope it’s grasped with both hands to make
the most of it. Naturally if anything develops we will keep
you posted, but for now well done Blues coaches and good
luck lads.
I’d like to say huge thanks for rallying to the cause at
Barrow, Mark Timbrell, Clarke McAllister, Harrison Rumford
and Olly Smith all jumped in to help the backroom crew.
Thanks lads you were and very appreciated!
Back to today and it’s the last game before League 1 splits
into the top 8 playoffs and Shield play offs, for which the
fixture draw will be out very soon. Last time when we were
at home against York, I thought the lads had a good say
in the pattern of the game but the quality of the Knights
halves was instrumental for them. Then Barrow with 16
hours of traveling is always a huge challenge and our first
half performance wasn’t shabby. The spirit and effort is
apparent, but unfortunately against top four teams our lack
of experience and quality is falling short.
However, I’m hoping that the lads take the positives from
these matches and stitch them together for a big performance
against the All Golds. Self belief and hard work has
delivered well for Charlie Greene, so let’s transform that
into the whole group. JJ is no doubt following you lads
today on twitter, so put in a shift for him!
Good luck lads and I hope you all enjoy the game.
Adrian

COACH’S CORNER
I KNOW HE HAS ENJOYED
HIS WEEK RUNNING
AROUND WITH RANGI
CHASE AND GETTING
STUCK INTO 2 NANDOS
PER DAY!
Welcome to Tilsley Park for the last
game of the regular season.
Today’s visitors, All Golds, will be
desperate for a win after what will
have been a disappointing season so far for them. Like
ourselves they have found themselves at the wrong end
of the table as we come to the “split”.
It would certainly have been nice to pick up a couple
more wins to give ourselves an easier passage into the
end of season hunt for silverware in the bottom 7, but
a win today will give us a sniff of getting into that part
of the table and that is what we are fighting for.
The fact is our young squad has been outgunned on far
too many occasions, sometimes physically and at times
just by the sheer experience in our opposition’s ranks.
We look forward now to playing on a much more
level playing field and the challenge is to compete for
80mins in every one of the remaining games - if we do
that, I believe we can finish the season with credibility
and pride.
Good news has come in form of the release of JJ
Baird from an extended stay in hospital. JJ suffered
complications from a dead leg which resulted in multiple
surgeries and what seems like an age in hospital. I
have spoken to JJ on a daily basis and never once
has he moaned or succumbed to negativity despite
being away from home and in great pain. JJ you are
an inspiration to us all and a credit to Oxford RL.
Today we have another new signing in Jack Pickles.
Jack has joined us after playing with York and Hunslet
and comes highly recommended. He is a prop or loose
forward and I am sure he will become a favourite once
he gets some game time under his belt. Another one
of our favourites Dan “Iggy” Igbinedion has spent the
week training with Castleford Tigers. Iggy was invited
up to train with Cas after catching the eye of the
coaching staff. We were only too happy to see Dan
get the opportunity and I know he has enjoyed his
week running around with Rangi Chase and getting
stuck into 2 Nandos per day! The plan is for the club
to keep tabs on Dan’s development and who knows
where that could lead. We’ve all been impressed with
his attitude and application despite a very challenging
season.
Enjoy the game
Tim

GET TO KNOW THE BLUES
WILL
MAHER
Will is a highly rated prop at Castleford Tigers who recently
signed a 4 year deal and has spent a good deal of time
this season in the Blues camp learning his trade and gaining
good game time.
Will has made the match day squad on numerous occasions
with the Tigers and had a very solid outing in the Tigers first
team recently against Hull. On the Hull game Maher said “I
have to work hard and be patient to get my opportunities at
Castleford and I can honestly say the game time I’ve had at
Oxford stood me in good stead for the Hull match.”
Will was an England RL academy player in 2014 and backed this up last season with five Super
League appearances for the Tigers. He has made 8 matches for Oxford to date in 2016 and has
become a popular player in the Blues camp.
JORDAN
GILL
New signing Jordan Gill is the brother of Kieran Gill who
is one of the Blues DR players with Castleford Tigers. With
the Blues squad hit with injuries, suspensions and availability
issues Jordan made his debut against York.
Gill was playing for Featherstone reserve grade until it was
disbanded and Kieran suggested that he contacted the club.
Head coach Rumford commented “I spoke to both Kieran
and then Jordan about the possibility and the commitment
I expect and require. Getting Jordan and Harry Griffith in
the same week was a plus for the squad. Both these players
have good rugby league upbringings but haven’t played for
a while so I expect a bit of ring rust will need to be knocked
off. They are good young lads and have an appetite to learn
and improve.“

CAVALIERS CROWNED CHAMPIONS
It was tipped to be the perfect ending to an
entertaining season when Oxford Cavaliers
travelled to Brentwood to take on the Eels.
On a lovely summer’s day in Essex, both
teams took to the field in first and second
place with only one point separating the
teams who have certainly been the most
consistent sides throughout the season. The
away side struggled to keep possession
early on, allowing the Eels to get to work
on their attacking sets. Some outstanding
defence early on from the likes of second
rowers Andrew Anderson and Roman
Harris kept the Eels at bay. On fifteen
minutes the Cavaliers finally completed a
set, getting to their kick on the last. Standoff
Cameron Scott managed to land the ball
in the in goal area forcing the Brentwood
winger to return the ball from deep. This
pressure resulted in the Cavaliers winning
back possession in the Eels half and the
forwards then laid the platform for scrum
half Jamie Whitwell to jink his way over to
score under the posts.
The Eels responded straight away as the
ball was lost on the first tackle from the kick
off. After a well worked move, a try was
scored in the corner, leaving the kicker with
too much to do. There was still time in the
half for both teams to improve their scores
as Cavaliers winger Dan Kelly started to
have an impact on the game. The pick of
Kelly’s tries came in the dying seconds of
the half when he intercepted a pass on
the half way line to race clear and score
under the posts. Marcus Reading added
the extras giving the visitors a 10-16 lead
at the break.
Kelly managed to complete his hat-trick
early in the second half but the home side
wouldn’t lie down. They hit back with a
try of their own to make the scores 16-22
and the game was again in the balance.
Anderson, Whitwell and Cavaliers captain
Dec Ross started to make their presence
felt in defence as the game picked up. A
strong drive from Ross saw him receiving
some rough treatment in the tackle which
resulted in an Eels player being sent to the
sin bin for 10 minutes. The pressure took
its toll on the Eels defence and prop Alfie
Beckett managed to dart over to put the
game out of reach for Brentwood.

CAVALIERS CROWNED CHAMPIONS
There was still time however for the home
side to make it a tense finish for the visitors
as they went over for two unconverted
tries in the final 5 minutes and with the
last play of the game they were looking to
break down the left edge until a forward
pass brought them back. The final whistle
sounded and the Cavaliers celebrated on
the field as they were crowned the 2016
league champions of the Five Counties Cup
after a hard fought 24-28 victory.
“You've really brought those boys
on in the last few years, your
success is thoroughly deserved”
Arran Smith,
Brentwood Eels
Head Coach
All the attention will now turn to the finals
day which will be held next Sunday 10th
July at Tilsley Park prior to the Oxford RL
v Gloucestershire All Golds Game where
the Family Fun Day will get under way
from 10:30am. Oxford Cavaliers will be
hoping to complete the treble after they
have already won the Oxford Gold Cup
and Five Counties League in 2016 but the
Brentwood Eels will no doubt come back
stronger looking for revenge.

GETTING TO KNOW GLOUCESTER
The University of Gloucestershire All Golds entered into semiprofessional
rugby league in March 2013 for the first time alongside
Oxford and the Hemel Stags. The All Golds were coached by former
Hull FC player Brad Hepi in their first season, finishing bottom of the
table.
Hepi remained in charge for the first seven games of the 2014 season
before stepping down stating he had “taken the side as far as he could”. Scotland head coach
Steve McCormack took over but only for the remainder of the season.
Former Halifax assistant coach Lee Greenwood was the next to take charge at the All Golds,
arguably being the most successful to date having achieved 9th place out of 14 teams last year.
