Gullies are pure heartwood sticks that are burned to create<br />
fragrance.<br />
Sawdust<br />
Asia<br />
from heartwood prepared for distillation is valuable enough<br />
to be collected and sold for use as an incense for religious<br />
purposes as well as for scenting clothes and cupboards.<br />
Worship<br />

Wood and powder are used for many daily religious rituals<br />
like tilak as well as events like weddings and funerals where<br />
the wood is used to lift the spirits to heaven.<br />
Pharmaceuticals<br />

Indian sandalwood oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, the United States<br />
anti-fungal and anti-proliferative properties. It is now the<br />
subject of clinical trials to develop prescription drugs to<br />
treat the skin.<br />
Perfumes<br />
Sandalwood makes a perfume last longer (fixative<br />
properties). It is a classical fragrance ingredient: 47 percent<br />
of all perfumes created since 1790 contain sandalwood<br />
notes.<br />
Cosmetics<br />
The medicinal properties of sandalwood make it a powerful<br />
cosmetic ingredient.<br />
Traditional medicine<br />

Sandalwood has been used for thousands of years in<br />
traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda.<br />
It is reportedly used for a wide range of conditions including<br />
bronchitis, skin conditions and stress.<br />
Aromatherapy<br />
Sandalwood was recently named as a top 10 essential<br />
oil for aroma therapists in the United States (D. Petersen,<br />
Perfumer and Flavorist, September 2013).<br />
