How and when did you get started with basketball? I got started with basketball in about second grade. I just really enjoyed it. What do you like most about basketball? That it’s with a team and it’s people supporting you. If you make a mistake, you can always trying again. Do you have any pregame rituals. No, not really. What athletes do you look up to? I really like Kobe Bryant. He’s one of my favorites. And also Michael Jordan. Who is your role model and why? I think my role models are my parents because they just are awesome and help me through everything. What are you most looking forward to in starting high school? The sports because I really love sports. And also that I’m getting older and I’m going to be in high school. So I’m looking forward to that. Describe Malibu in one word. Beach. That’s what I do all the time. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? To fly. It just seems really fun. You’re president for Alex Vejar/22nd Century Media one day. What’s your first order of business? Make something like cigarettes cost more so it would be hard for people to kill themselves. What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate. I really like chocolate. malibusurfsidenews.com Sports Malibu surfside news | July 27, 2016 | 37 Pepperdine Sports Waves men’s basketball’s non-con slate includes Belmont, Weber State Submitted by Pepperdine University The Pepperdine University men’s basketball team will play another challenging non-conference schedule in 2016-17, with at least six games against schools that advanced to postseason play and that won 19 or more games last year, as head coach Marty Wilson announced the first portion of the Waves’ schedule on July 14. The Waves will have five home games inside of Firestone Fieldhouse, including the first three contests of the season: Nov. 11 vs. Cal Poly, Nov. 15 vs. Weber State and Nov. 17 vs. Life Pacific). Pepperdine will also host Portland State on Nov. 27 and Belmont Dec. 3. Weber State played in the NCAA Tournament and Belmont was in the National Invitation Tournament. Pepperdine will be tested in all of its road games, which includes Long Beach State on Dec. 7, USC on Dec. 11, Louisiana on Dec. 20 and Montana on Dec. 22. All four teams played in the postseason, including USC in the NCAA Tournament. The Waves could add to their list of 2016 postseason opponents at the Lone Star Showcase. The multi-team tournament, which will be held near Austin, Texas, from Nov. 21-23, has yet to announce its field. “I believe our schedule will allow us to compete against some very successful basketball programs and versus some very respected coaches,” Wilson said. “Our players and staff will be challenged to compete at a high level every night.” The Waves will return three starters and four key players from last year’s squad, which went 18-14 overall, finished fourth in the West Coast Conference at 10-8 and earned a spot in the College Basketball Invitational. Senior guard-forward Lamond Murray Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) made the All- WCC second team and led the squad at 16.6 points per game, senior point guards Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) and Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS/St. Thomas More) are two of the top assist men in school history and sophomore forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) is coming off a WCC All-Freshman season. Pepperdine Sports Staffer honored with national admin award Submitted by Pepperdine University Pepperdine University associate director of athletics Karina Herold has been honored by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators as one of its eight 2016 Administrators of the Year Award recipients, the organization announced July 15. Herold, who oversees external operations and is the department’s senior women’s administrator, just concluded her fifth year at Pepperdine. She also served as the tournament manager at the 2013 and 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional Championships, which Pepperdine hosted at Staples Center. Herold received NAC- WAA’s award for NCAA Division I (non-FBS and non-FCS divisions). She and the other seven honorees will be recognized at a luncheon in Kansas City on Oct. 11. “Karina is the most talented young woman I have ever encountered in my 16 years in athletic administration,” Pepperdine Director of Athletics Steve Potts said. “She handles all of our external affairs, supervises numerous sports, serves as our SWA, has successfully managed two NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regionals and serves as a mentor to all of our younger female staff members. ...We are most fortunate to have Karina with us at Pepperdine.” Pepperdine Sports Ariana Martinez added to women’s soccer coach staff Submitted by Pepperdine University Pepperdine women’s soccer head coach Tim Ward announced the hiring of assistant coach Ariana Martinez on July 14 to fill out the Waves’ coaching staff. Martinez comes to Pepperdine after a distinguished playing career on both the collegiate and national levels, and brings a wealth of coaching experience from the youth and prep ranks. She replaces Mary Grace Schmidt, who left to pursue other interests outside of coaching. Max Rooke was also elevated to associate head coach for the Waves recently. “We are very pleased to announce the hiring of Ariana,” said Ward. “I’ve known and watched Ari play for over 10 years now and I’ve always been impressed not only by her ability as a soccer player, but equally with her character as a woman. She has a wonderful ability to fiercely compete at the highest level on the field, while still maintaining the respect of all who play with and against her. She has a strong desire to teach and with her unique set of playing experiences, we feel she is well-qualified to help our girls here at Pepperdine reach new levels.” Martinez played four years of Pac-12 soccer, starting her collegiate career at UCLA in 2010 before transferring to California in 2012 and finishing her career there. She was also called up to the Mexican National Team as a college sophomore in 2011 and played in the 2012 Under-20 World Cup in Japan with Mexico as well. “I am incredibly honored and excited about the opportunity to join the Pepperdine women’s soccer staff and look forward to working for such an accomplished head coach as Tim Ward and coach Max Rooke,” said Martinez. “I am just as excited to work with the high caliber student athletes that Pepperdine University attracts and hope to contribute in their development on and off the field.” As a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico, Martinez gained experience in both countries’ national team development systems, and eventually made four caps for the Mexican National Team. She played in three games at the 2012 China Football Association International Tournament with Mexico and played a full 90 minutes against the French National Team in 2011. Martinez played in five games at the U-20 World Cup in 2012. As both a defender and midfielder during her time in college, Martinez played her first two seasons at UCLA before eventually transferring to Cal. She served on a defensive unit that surrendered one goal or less in 19 of 23 matches in 2010 and recorded two assists from the back line on both UCLA goals in a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Notre Dame, the eventual National Champions. Martinez also earned Player of the Match honors in an NCCA Tournament game against Stanford. With the Golden Bears, Martinez saw time as both a defender and midfielder, playing in 38 total contests. Competing primarily in the midfield as a junior, Martinez scored two goals, one of which was the game-winner against Pepperdine in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. She earned Pac-12 All-Academic recognition as a senior. Martinez graduated from Cal in 2014 with a degree in early childhood education and sociology/ psychology of education. She worked as both a trainer and coach following her graduation, most recently serving as the assistant coach of the girls’ varsity team at Viewpoint School in Calabasas this past season. She also worked as a soccer coach and trainer at the Sports Academy of Thousand Oaks, coaching both futsal and beach to ages 2-15. Martinez has coached for the Eagles Soccer Club and other local youth clubs in the Moorpark area, and was both a coach and nutrition and wellness educator for the Ole Soccer Club. Martinez also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and was a youth tutor, mentor and an AYSO coach during her time in college.
