Graffiti cleaned, trail repaired at El Matador beach
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
California State Parks workers
painted over graffiti and repaired a trail
last week at El Matador State Beach.
The graffiti that was cleaned appeared
underneath each step of two
sets of staircases leading to the beach’s
parking lot from the sand below. CSP
workers painted over the graffiti the
morning of July 18-19.
The workers also filled a deep trench
that stretched from the beach to the
parking lot. The area appeared to work
as a walkway in between staircases.
The workers used a compactor to fill
the trench with dirt, making it easier
and safer to walk on.
Malibu cemetery project inches closer to fruition
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
A project over a year in the
making to build a cemetery in
Malibu is finally making some
headway through Malibu’s governmental
red tape.
The project, deemed Malibu
Memorial Park, calls for a chapel,
a four-wall public mausoleum
and thousands of burial
plots within a 27.8-acre site
on Malibu Canyon Road in
the Civic Center area. In addition,
the project features various
horseshoe-shaped memorial
walls for private estates,
six half-circle crypts lining the
side of the straight path leading
to the chapel and 176 proposed
parking spaces, according to
plans submitted to the Malibu
Planning Department.
In recent years, it has been reported
that the cemetery and memorial
park could include technology
such as voice recordings
and holograms of the deceased,
and the ability of visitors to find
their loved ones’ plots with GPS.
Those reports have not been confirmed
by the Malibu Surfside
News.
A representative of Richard
Weintraub, the developer of the
project, said Weintraub did not
have any comments at this time.
An article by the New York
Post created buzz about the project
among the Malibu community
in recent weeks. But the proposal
of this project is not new.
Project developers first submitted
their application for the
Malibu Memorial Park project
in April 2015, according to planning
department documents.
Over the next 12 months, various
studies and reports were filed in
reference to the project, including
ones looking at air quality,
noise, traffic impact and others.
During the application process,
the planning department
sent three notices to the developers
saying their application was
An outline and overview of the Malibu Memorial Park project proposed for the Civic Center area. Image Submitted
incomplete and requested changes
be made to them.
Law firm Gaines & Stacy
LLP, which represents the owners
of the near-28-acre property,
expressed frustration to Malibu
senior planner Adrian Fernandez
over how many times the applications
were deemed incomplete
by the City, according to printouts
of emails found in planning
department files for the project.
The law firm suggested that the
planning department was in violation
of the Permit Streamlining
Act, which aims to expedite the
permit process for development
projects.
“The City’s midstream changes
to its requirements for what
constitutes a complete application
are unacceptable and exactly
the type of conduct by a
lead agency that the PSA seeks
to prevent,” one email from the
law firm to Fernandez reads.
Malibu Parks and Recreation Commission
Bluffs Parkland designs to head to coastal commission
Eric Billingsly
Freelance Reporter
Recent changes to the
City’s Integrated Pest
Management program,
an update on the Malibu
Bluffs Parkland project,
and improvements to the
Dial-A-Ride program were
a few of the topics discussed
at the City of Malibu
Parks and Recreation
Commission meeting on
July 19.
Round it Up
A brief recap of other Parks and Recreation action July 19
•The multi-purpose field at Malibu Bluffs Park is
currently being re-seeded, and will reopen to the
public on Aug. 14
•A majority of the City-sponsored summer camps for
youth have exceeded camp participant minimums
•The City Council recently authorized the city
manager to execute the amendment with Santa
Monica-Malibu Unified School District to extend the
2013-2016 joint use agreement for an additional
three-year period
•The City of Malibu Parks and Recreation
Commission will be going paperless as of the
beginning of August 2016.
Malibu Bluffs Parkland
Over the past few years,
the City of Malibu Parks
and Recreation Commission
has been tasked with
developing a Park Master
Plan for 83 acres of undeveloped
open space adjacent
to Malibu Bluffs Park,
10 acres of developed
space at the existing park
and 1.75 acres of vacant
land known as the Crummer
Property.
“We have an incredible
opportunity to create
a park in the center of our
community that can fulfill
a shortage of amenities
for all of our community,”
said Carl Randall, chair of
the City of Malibu’s Parks
and Recreation Commission.
In 2013, the City Council
approved a five-year
land use agreement with
the Santa Monica Mountains
Conservancy, transferring
maintenance and
operations responsibilities
for 525 acres of the Cityowned
Charmlee Wilderness
Park for the 83 acres
of undeveloped open
space, according to the
City’s website. The agreement
allows the City to access
the property in order
to assess the feasibility of
developing recreational facilities
on the site.
The City has since
hosted focus groups, multiple
public meetings and
sent out public surveys
to gather community input
on the Malibu Bluffs
Parkland project. Based on
that input, officials worked
with consultants to create a
draft master plan.
The current plan includes
adding a dog park,
skate park, aquatic center,
additional sports facilities,
open space, trails, amphitheater,
basketball courts
and space for large community
events, according
to Randall. The next step is
to gain approval from the
California Coastal Commission.
Malibu City staff recently
met with staff from
the California Coastal
Commission to get initial
feedback on the plan. As
a result of the meeting, the
draft plan will also likely
include more emphasis
on education about sustainability
practices and
the Chumash people, the
original inhabitants of the
Malibu area.
City Manager Reva
Feldman will meet with
California Coastal Commission
staff on Aug. 23 to
review updates to the plan.
“We are under the jurisdiction
of the California
Coastal Commission and
have to find a park design
that makes all parties happy,”
Randall said.
Dial-A-Ride changes
In an effort to expand
the City of Malibu’s Dial-
A-Ride service, the City
recently sent out a survey
to people who use the program
and those registered
with the Malibu Senior
Center.
Survey responses led to
three proposed changes,
including: increasing service
hours for trips within
Malibu until 5:30 p.m.
on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday; increasing
the number of one-way
trips within Malibu people
can use each day to three;
and allowing users to go
into Santa Monica service
areas for nonmedical purposes.
The expanded Dial-A-
Ride services are expected
to take effect at the beginning
of September, said
Theresa Odello, recreation
coordinator with the Malibu
Senior Center. But the
changes still need to be
approved by the Malibu
City Council. The Los Angeles
County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority
funds the program with
Proposition A transportation
dollars.
The City of Malibu
Dial-A-Ride program is a
transit system that serves
people ages 60 and older
and those with disabilities
who are residents of Malibu.
It currently provides
low-cost transportation,
ranging from $1 to $4 one
way, for trips within city
limits and for medical
appointments outside of
Malibu.
“The Dial-A-Ride program
really serves seniors
[and those with disabilities]
in the Malibu community,
many of whom
are unable to drive and
those who want to be safer
and choose not to drive,”
Odello said.
There are currently 400
Integrated Pest
Management
On June 27, the Malibu
City Council directed
Parks and Recreation staff
to immediately discontinue
the use of pesticides
on all City-owned parks,
roads and properties, said
Kristin Riesgo, recreation
manager for the City of
Malibu. City officials
want to establish an earthfriendly
management policy,
she said.
“We always try to practice
earth-friendly pest management
at all of our parks,”
Riesgo said. “This is just a
way for the City Council to
formally direct staff to no
longer use pesticides. In the
past, we’ve used pesticides
minimally and have not
used them at all in our parks
since February 2016.”
The Malibu Parks and
Recreation Commission
will work with the Environmental
Sustainability
Department to draft an Integrated
Pest Management
program that includes the
City Council’s new requirements.
CemetEry
From Page 4
ing its list of requirements
for a complete application
violates the provisions of
the PSA.”
Planning Director Bonnie
Blue said in an email
that because the proposed
cemetery and memorial
park has never been proposed
before, “the standard
submittal checklist
doesn’t account for the
special characteristics” of
that type of project.
“We try our best to anticipate
everything we will
need on the front end, but
sometimes an applicant’s
revised submittal raises
new questions, especially
when it’s a type of project
we’ve never seen before,”
Blue said.
In a May 16 email to
Fernandez, the law firm
stated that a 30-day period
during which the City had
to respond to the developer’s
most recent project
application had elapsed,
automatically deeming the
application “complete as a
matter of law.”
Blue said the City typically
does not issue a formal
completeness letter
until an environmental
review is completed. That
review is the next step in
the process for the cemetery
project, she said.
The City created a landing
page last week with
information about the
project, which is currently
“under review,” according
to the page.
While the New York
Post article claimed that
Weintraub said the cemetery
and memorial park
would be up and running
in 2018, that may not be
the case. Patricia Salazar,
senior administrative
analyst for the planning
department, said the City
still has to approve various
discretionary entitlements
to “facilitate development
of the proposed
project.”
Councilwoman Laura
Rosenthal told the Malibu
Surfside News that “people
can like concepts,” but
as it stands, the project
has not come before any
committees, there have
been no votes and she
hasn’t seen any plans for
the project.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty,”
Rosenthal said.

Women cross Malibu on awareness trek up the coast
Walk to cover all
1,200 miles of
Calif. Coastal Trail
Melina Watts
Freelance Reporter
This spring, Morgan
Visalli and Jocelyn Enevoldsen
and their logistics
manager Alisan Amhrein
embarked upon a
gargantuan trek: the MoJo
Coastwalk, a hike of all
1,200 miles of the California
Coastal Trail to grow
coastal awareness.
When the three women
met at the Bren School of
Environmental Science and
Management at University
of California at Santa
Barbara, they drew up the
concept for their three-anda-half-month
journey.
Visalli and Enevoldsen,
known as Mo and Jo, started
off right above Crescent
City this May and entered
Malibu on Thursday, July
21.
When the Malibu Surfside
News caught up with
them at Trancas Creek,
Visalli and Enevoldsen
said they had walked 10-12
miles a day for 10 weeks.
Their knowledge of California
ecosystems and geography
has grown as they
move from one California
coast to the next, one step
at a time.
Because big sections of
the trail don’t exist yet,
they have had to do extensive
bike-arounds to
circumvent such sites as
the Ventura County Naval
Base at Port Hueneme.
Places in Malibu, such as
Nicholas Canyon Beach
where the combination of
cliffs and high tide made
walking impossible, forced
them to go back up to the
Pacific Coast Highway to
walk.
The day they came
through Malibu, however,
Broad Beach was not
broad at all, so they had to
trek back to the highway
for a spell.
Back on the sand at the
mouth of Trancas Creek,
Visalli and Enevoldsen
were eager to continue to
the tide-pools past Point
Dume. When asked how
these regions are faring
given their relatively recent
protection via the
Marine Protected Areas
and Areas of Special Biological
Significance status,
Enevoldsen would not
speculate.
“Oh, we haven’t read
any studies on that yet,”
Enevoldsen said.
Visalli then spoke about
certain environmental conditions
in Malibu.
“Ideally, we’d like to see
a reduction in armoring infrastructure,”
Visalli said,
adding that building new
coastal structures that are
set back further from the
sea and utilizing planned
retreat where aging structures
are taken out will help
address rising sea levels.
Visalli was particularly
struck by “a ramp to nowhere”
on Nicholas Beach
that could easily be removed.
In her work with the
Coastal Conservancy, Enevoldsen
was impressed
by the restoration project
at the Malibu Lagoon and
intrigued by potential restoration
projects at Trancas
Lagoon and Topanga
Lagoon.
Sometime after their
journey ends, Visalli, Enevoldsen
and Amhrein will
create an app about the
California Coastal Trail.
“We learn something
new every day,” Visalli
said.
The packs of the two women read “MoJo Coast Walk.” MoJo represents the first two
letters of each of Enevoldsen’s and Visalli’s names.

Del Busto’s direction,
coupled with the Latin
Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee
State funding a major concern if, when district separates
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
The Malibu Unification
Negotiations Committee on
July 19 batted around some
options for creating an equitable
financial situation if
and when the separation of
the Santa Monica-Malibu
Unified School District occurs.
In its prior meeting, the
committee of six faced
some sobering realities that
could make a split more
difficult because it would
cost the State of California
millions of dollars to subsidize
a Santa Monica-only
school district, according
to a report by the committee’s
educational consultant
School Services of California.
Robert Miyashiro and
Mike Ricketts of SSC attended
the meeting in person
and detailed their ideas
for how the separation of
the SMMUSD could benefit
Malibu, Santa Monica
and the State.
The first option the consultants
suggested involved
doing nothing different. In
other words, the committee
would continue on its current
path to a split and assume
that the State backfill
the financial shortfall left
after Santa Monica is independent.
Santa Monica team
member Paul Silvern said
the committee would also
have to convince the State
Board of Education that
the extra money the State
will have to pay is not “an
adverse impact that should
kill the separation.”
“I think ... that is a better
option because, obviously,
it’s easier as a sell to
Malibu because they end
up with more money than
if they had to just share
what’s already there,” said
Debbie Mulvaney, a Santa
Monica team member.
That option, however,
would be risky because it’s
possible the State BOE or
the Department of Finance
could say no because it
costs the State money, Silvern
said.
The committee also
briefly discussed the possibility
going with the first
option, but using special
legislation to circumvent
the approval process of the
Los Angeles County Office
of Education and the State
Board.
Mulvaney said using legislation
could be beneficial
because it is always possible
that either LACOE or
the State denies the separation
based on something
other than financial criteria.
The second option
caused some stir. Miyashiro
said he and Ricketts
were “noodling” around
with the idea that after a
separation occurs, two independent
districts would
perform financially as if
they were still one district,
with each city getting exactly
the same amount of
money as they get currently
with SMMUSD.
In that model, Malibu
would not become a basic
aid district immediately
after a split, and it would
agree to pay any financial
shortfall incurred by Santa
Monica. That way, “from
the State’s point of view,
there is no state costs,” Miyashiro
said.
Essentially, Malibu
would have to prop up Santa
Monica until it becomes
a basic aid district and no
longer needs extra funds
from Malibu to make it financially
viable. That option
did not seem popular
among the committee.
“I don’t think it’s viable
in any scenario,” Malibu
team member Manel
Sweetmore said.
Karen Orlansky, the
This portable TV receives HD signals from all
your local over-the-air stations, on your patio,
in the kitchen and so many more places.
Always wanted to have an extra TV
wherever you are or go? High cost of cable
keep you from adding extra TVs? Now
you can have digital TV available all the
time and never again miss the news, local
weather, or your “stories,” all without
having to pay for an extra cable box!
This portable and lightweight crystalclear
digital TV even works in your
car—and like your favorite large digital
TV—it has a wonderfully clear picture! The
generous 9” screen is bright and brilliant.
There’s even an additional external
committee’s independent
facilitator, said she felt the
committee does not want
to pursue the second option.
Most of the committee
members agreed, with
the exception of Silvern,
Sweetmore and Santa
Monica team member Tom
Larmore.
Silvern said SSC should
explore the option further,
while Larmore said he is
“certainly” not ready to
give up on the scenario because
he thinks it’s the better
political option.
Sweetmore said Option
2 could be a good backup
plan if a political challenge
to the separation were to
arise.
The committee also tackled
various ways on how
two separate districts can
divvy up what it called
“other sources of revenue,”
which includes the SM-
MUSD joint use agreement,
rental income and
other sources not controlled
by the district.
SMMUSD Board of Education
MHS gets new assistant principal, to increase water conservation efforts
Cassandra Stephenson
Freelance Reporter
The Santa
Monica-Malibu
Unified
School District
Board
appointed Dr.
Weissman
Hillary Weissman
as the
new assistant principal of
Malibu High School at its
July 20 meeting.
“I just want to say I’m
pleased to be here and very
excited to get started and
work with the students and
parents and staff and the
community of Malibu,”
Weissman said, addressing
the board.
Weissman most recently
served for two years as assistant
principal for Norte
Vista High School in Riverside
after serving five years
as an intervention specialist,
coordinator for groups
the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges and
English department chairwoman
at Manual Arts High
to a SMMUSD news
release.
Weissman has prior
teaching experience as an
She holds a bachelor of arts
in English, a master of arts
California State University
at Long Beach, according
to the release.
District plans to ramp up
water conservation
Members of the Financial
Oversight Committee
also presented their findings
and recommendations
concerning potential cost
savings through sustainability,
maintenance financing,
and the impact of
living wage and minimum
wage on the school district.
The sustainability subcommittee
recommended
immediate action to audit
both water and energy use
“We have a responsibility to the students here to
show them what 21st-century life should look like,
and to me that means you get as much off the grid
[as you can] and you get as water sensitive as you
can possibly be.”
Craig Foster — School Board member on reducing water usage
districtwide in hopes of
providing savings recommendations
by fall 2016.
Subcommittee Chairwoman
Shelly Slaugh Nahass
said water audits will
be done on Santa Monica
campuses in the coming
months; however, the funding
for these audits does
not apply to Malibu sites,
requiring an additional
$30,000 of funding from
the School Board or grants
from local Malibu water
districts to complete.
The report states that
“review and analysis of the
Malibu sites is critical for
this program to be successful,”
as the data reviewed
by the subcommittee shows
the largest water use issues
and fines occur in Malibu.
Foster said he is aware of
discussions in Malibu regarding
reduction of water
consumption and would be
happy to facilitate more.
“I think Malibu’s going
to be very willing to
help us because they have
this issue over decreasing
water consumption and I
think there’s been a lot of
outreach,” Foster said. “We
need to capture that outreach
in a way that actually
creates the stuff we’re looking
for.”
The subcommittee also
recommended the district
take advantage of a Continuous
spans two years, with a
recommended eight staff
Foster also voiced his
support for the overall
ideas of this subcommittee.
“We have a responsibility
to the students here to
show them what 21st-century
life should look like,
and to me that means you
get as much off the grid [as
you can] and you get as water
sensitive as you can possibly
be so we want them to
live that experience in our
schools,” Foster said. “On
that hand, we have sort of
a moral fiduciary responsibility
to our students, and
then on the other hand we
have the opportunity to potentially
save money or create
financial savings in our
operating budget.”
Committee gives update on
potential separation
The Malibu Unification
Negotiations Committee
also gave an update
on their progress; though
the committee is not yet
in a position to report any
recommendations, Santa
Monica team member Tom
Larmore said.
The committee’s most recent
meetings with education
consulting firm School
Services of California have
built a “very sound information
base to work with
now,” Santa Monica team
member Paul Silvern said;
though Larmore later noted
the process would likely
require more time than the
60-day extension granted
on June 29.
According to the committee’s
findings thus far,
in the case of a split into
separate districts, Malibu
would qualify as a “basic
aid” district immediately,
meaning that it would continue
to receive both basic
aid from the State of California
and revenue from local
property taxes. A separate
Santa Monica school
district would become
basic aid “somewhat later
in the decade,” Larmore
said, while SMMUSD as it
stands is likely to qualify in
five years or more.
Board member Craig
Foster is confident in the
committee’s progress.
“I think we have six
people who are engaged
in finding solutions and
they’re getting their research
and the support to
allow them to find those
solutions,” Foster said. “I
think the process is fantastic.”
The committee had plans
to meet with law firm Procopio,
Cory, Hargreaves &
Savitc LLP, on Tuesday,
July 26, to discuss the allocation
of bonds and bond
authority. Operating budget
issues will be discussed on
Aug. 2, and they plan to
consult their legal team regarding
environmental issues
on Aug. 9.

Perception v. reality of cemetery
Alex vejar
alex@malibusurfsidenews.com
In the last couple weeks,
there’s been a lot of
chatter over a proposed
cemetery in the Civic
Center area of Malibu.
Lots of news organizations
are taking an interest in the
story (this one included),
and the buzz seems to have
been re-created by a New
York Post article from July
14 with the flashy, clickworthy
headline: “Malibu’s
rich and famous are about
to live next to a cemetery.”
This issue, however, is
not new. The developers
began the application process
with the Malibu Planning
Department last year
and have been making adjustments
and updates to it
ever since. The most recent
set of plans were submitted
in recent months.
At first blush, the
thought of having a large
cemetery — the development
hopes to be nearly 30
acres — seems unnecessary
and out of place in
Malibu (especially if you
read a headline like the
NYP’s). Take a step back,
however, and the project’s
plans are intriguing, and a
cemetery in a community
is not in and of itself a bad
idea.
Malibu residents, current
and past, love this town
and they know it is not
what outsiders perceive
it to be. They’ve grown
up here, rode their horses,
eaten at longtime restaurants,
cheered their kids
on during school sporting
events and performances,
and so much more. So
when they or loved ones
pass away, it’s natural for
friends and family to want
that individual buried close
to home.
And even for those who
have never lived in Malibu
but enjoy visiting the city
or its beaches, having a
cemetery so close to the
Pacific Ocean would be an
attractive resting place for
those who seek even more
peace after their life.
In addition, that space,
with its lush greenery,
seems ideal for a memorial
park, perfect for walking
around with its natural surroundings.
With a place as beautiful
as Malibu, doesn’t it make
sense to be laid to rest in
an area deemed “26 Miles
of Scenic Beauty”? Isn’t
the idea of having a loved
one in a permanent space
so close to the beach a lot
more attractive than one
that’s near a freeway?
Malibu residents are appropriately
sensitive about
developments in their city.
But sometimes, development
is improvement.
This might be one of
those times.
Don’t Panic, It’s Organic
Building an organic garden in Malibu
Andy Lopez
Contributing Columnist
Invisible Gardener
Planting an organic
garden involves
more than putting
organic seeds in the ground
and hoping. It includes selecting
a location and preparing
the seed bed. Will
you sow seeds directly into
the beds, or will you start
them in a greenhouse or
tray? And then if you do
plant directly will you thin
or will you try your hand at
transplanting?
Creating a plan
Begin to plan your
next garden by learning
from your past gardens.
Or, if you have never had
a garden before, join an
organic gardening club and
learn from other organic
gardeners.
Selecting a location
Choose an area with
plenty of morning sunlight
and some afternoon shade.
Most vegetables, especially
fruiting types, do best
with eight hours of full sun
exposure. Leafy and root
vegetables will tolerate
partial — but bright —
shade. A loose, fertile,
well-drained soil is best. If
possible, avoid heavy clays
or very sandy soils. Where
space is limited, container
gardening is the way to go.
The ideal organic garden
soil is a minimum of 18
inches to 3 feet or more,
fertile, well-drained and
medium-textured.
Ukulele band’s members tell story of group’s beginnings
Actor and resident
Dick Van Dyke
makes appearance
at library concert
Berkley Mason
Freelance Reporter
Last Thursday, July 21,
was the first time in a year
since the Malibu Ukulele
Orchestra, founded in 2012,
had its first performance at
the Malibu Public Library.
Despite this group forming
ultimately from word
of mouth, the small instrument
has brought this small
group of people together
— people who would have
likely never met otherwise,
said Matteo Indelicato, cofounder
of the group.
Indelicato had initially
met the founder, Carter
Crary, because they were
both divers — Crary and
his wife own Malibu Divers.
But Indelicato doesn’t
credit diving for his now
longtime friend, but rather
credits the ukulele.
“I was looking to do a
scuba refresher course, and
this kind of [demonstrates]
Actor and Malibu resident Dick Van Dyke (center) joins
the Malibu Ukulele Orchestra for a photo.
how the ukulele brings
people together,” Indelicato
said. “I was a scuba diver,
so, I walked into [Malibu
Divers] and Carter’s got
[a ukulele] hanging in the
shop. I went, ‘You play
the ukulele?’ And he said,
‘A little bit’ — turned out
we were both going to see
Jake Shimabukuro at The
Canyon Club — he was a
famous ukulele player —
and we both had tickets at
the same time. So, that was
our introduction.”
The ukulele provided for
an instant connection between
the two scuba divers
and resulted in Indelicato
visiting Malibu Divers —
otherwise known by the
group members as “Carter’s
shop” — much more
frequently.
“So, we started playing
together — now, five years
have gone by and I’m [currently]
managing the shop
and I’m the lead dive instructor,”
Indelicato said.
“It all really started because
that ukulele was standing
there [on that first day].”
Indelicato and Crary
never anticipated that
TJ Jones strums his ukulele during a performance of the Malibu Ukulele Orchestra on
Thursday, July 21, at the Malibu Library. Photos by Berkley Mason/22nd Century Media
they’d start an official ukulele
group, but as the two of
them started playing more
together, people became
more interested and the
group simultaneously began
to get larger.
“We never planned on
being a group,” Indelicato
said. “He and I played
together, somebody else
saw, and then we’d only
meet up once a month,
and it just grew, kind of
by word of mouth or even
seeing the ukulele. Now,
we’ve invited anyone who
wants to come — it could
be your very first time, or
the very first instrument
you’ve ever played. We’ve
had people who bring their
Children tackle serious themes for musical ‘Hairspray’
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
Malibu’s Once Upon A
Time Children’s Theater
presented “Hairspray,”
the Broadway musical, on
Saturday and Sunday, July
23-24, at the Malibu Playhouse.
The production was
co-directed by Julia Holland
and Dee Dee Porter.
“Hairspray,” based on
the 1988 John Waters film,
is set in Baltimore in the
1960s, an era of tumult in
America. On the fashion
scene, new trends were
emerging, and it was all
about flamboyant costumes
and magnificent hairstyles.
The Civil Rights movement
was in full throttle. America
was awash in change.
When a girl named Tracy
Turnblad tries out for the
Corny Collins show, she
does not get accepted because
of her race and her
views on integration. The
play’s racial themes and
messages go on from there.
“Hairspray” recounts
Tracy’s efforts at furthering
integration and fixing one
small part of Baltimore’s
racism, all the while suffering
from common teenage
angst and self-consciousness.
The show discusses
serious integration issues
in both dance and song.
Fantastic, memorable numbers
include “The Nicest
Kids in Town,” “The
Legend of Miss Baltimore
Crabs,” “I Can Hear the
Bells,” “Ladies’ Choice,”
“The New Girl in Town,”
“Big, Blonde, and Beautiful,”
“Without Love,”
“Welcome to the Sixties,”
“I Know Where I’ve Been”
and “You Can’t Stop the
Beat.”
Derrick Leroy plays
Edna, whom Leroy must
play in drag. Leroy pulls it
off with expertise.
“I have to raise my
voice,” said the 12-yearold
Leroy. “I cannot have
a scratchy voice, so I have
to make sure that I get my
voice up high.”
The polite, well-spoken
12-year-old added: “I have
to go typical lady-like — to
swing my hips and keep my
shoulder up.”
Leroy, an eighth-grader
at McKinna Learning Center
who is also an aspiring
cook and photographer,
previously played the Wiz.
He said it is harder to play
Edna because of the show’s
underlying social issues.
He, like all the other kids,
sees the importance of the
plot.
“If everyone is changing
the world and making it bet-
Acclaimed pianists to give
first performance at Smothers
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Freddie Ravel and Joe
Rozum will bring their piano
skills together for the
first time for an evening of
jazz, blues, pop and Latin
fusion music at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 30, in the
Smothers Concert Hall at
Pepperdine University.
Both musicians are local
favorites in Malibu
who have released several
albums that have been
critically and popularly
acclaimed. During their
upcoming Malibu concert,
they will play many new
songs as well as old favorites
with new compositions.
Rozum blends seamlessly
from jazz to pop
music. His style has been
described as lyrical and
spiritual. His distinct interpretations
draw from
blues, soundtrack themes,
gospel and classical music.
For more information,
visit www.joerozum.com.
Ravel is a legendary
keyboardist who has collaborated
with Carlos
Santana, Prince, Quincy
Jones, and Earth, Wind
and Fire. His style is influenced
by both Latin and
contemporary jazz. For
more information, visit
www.freddieravel.com.
Ticket prices for the concert
range from $29.95 to
$49.95 and can be ordered
Ukulele
From Page 22
even know how to string
it, but we show them how
and then they start playing
with us.”
Malibu Ukulele Orchestra
members Melody Bobo
and her British husband
Matt Poole, though they
weren’t beginners when
they joined the group —
did happen to hear about it
by word of mouth.
“I’m from [Malibu], but
I’ve lived in England for
the past 20 years, and I just
came back [about 2 years
ago] — that’s why I have a
funny accent,” Bobo said.
“My mom sent me a clipping
from an article about
the group, [so when] I got
[to Malibu], I called them
and I was like ‘Hey, can
we join?’ and that was it.
We’ve been in the group
ever since we landed here.”
Seeing that the ukulele
group has accumulated
more members over the
years, they’ve also incorporated
a variety of different
sounds along the
way — the banjo, various
vocalists and tribal instruments.
Bobo is one of
the main vocalists of the
group, but that’s not all she
offers.
“Wagon Wheel is a lot of
fun to play, but pretty much
anything is,” Bobo said. “I
get a kick out of hitting
a tambourine, so, pretty
much any song where I get
to hit a tambourine.”
Regarding the number of
members involved in the
group currently, it somewhat
revolves around nine
to 12 members, said group
member TJ Jones, who’s
been involved for about a
year now.
The Malibu Ukulele Orchestra
currently meets every
other week in the back
of Crary’s dive shop, said
Debbie Pierson, a Malibu
native and member of the
orchestra for about a year
and a half.
“There’s a little patio [at
the dive shop], so in the
summer [the group] can go
outside and play,” Pierson
said. “We have a lot of fun.
I don’t think you could find
a nicer group of people.”
Many of the current
members initially inquired
about the group because
they simply wanted someone
with which to play the
ukulele. But now, they’re
good friends who play instruments
together every
other week, Indelicato
said.
“It’s fun. That’s all it is
— fun,” Indelicato said.
“That little instrument
brings people together. It’s
amazing.”
malibusurfsidenews.com
The Dish
Gravina gets set for summer with light pasta
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
If the hot weather isn’t
enough of a clue that summer
has arrived, the menu
changes at various Malibu
restaurants should provide
some confirmation.
Throughout the city diners
are being treated to
lighter dishes with a splash
of freshness, perhaps so
Malibuites can find at
least some respite from the
scorching temperatures.
Almost like clockwork,
another restaurant will be
making a lighter addition
to its menu in the coming
weeks. Gravina Malibu
will join the summer ranks
with its new Rigatoni pasta
($30).
“Sometimes [traditional
and flavorful dishes] gets
way too much during summertime,”
said Angelo
Immacolato, manager of
Gravina Malibu. “When
you want to eat, you want
to eat something that
doesn’t make you too full
or too heavy.”
The pasta features homemade
rigatoni with artichoke
sauce, shrimp scampi
and cherry tomatoes,
topped with some more
scampi. Although the pasta
contains few ingredients,
the blend of flavors creates
an experience Malibu diners
won’t soon forget. The
dish will appear as one of
Gravina Malibu’s specials,
Immacolato said.
The pasta is so new
that it does not yet have
an official name, he said;
however, he made a point
mention that most pastas
in Italy don’t have a standardized
name.
Immacolato said Malibu
diners will like the pasta
mainly because of how it
looks, saying that presentation
is “50 percent of the
dish.”
“Just the way it looks, it
makes it so palatable [and
appetizing],” Immacolato
said. “It’s very, very nice.”
Immacolato also mentioned
the ingredients as
being the other 50 percent
of the reason Malibuites
will want to give the dish
a try.
But the most unique aspect
of the rigatoni pasta,
Immacolato said, is the
fact that it nixes cream.
“One of the easiest ways
— like a small cheat —
to make something more
palatable is using heavy
cream because, of course,
your body needs fats, so
when it sees the fats, it’s
going to immediately like
what you eat,” Immacolato
said. “This one, instead,
doesn’t have any of that.
Just olive oil, a touch of
butter — it’s very light. So
if you like it, it’s because
it’s very good.”
Immacolato said the pasta
is also available without
gluten.
Another dish not to miss:
•Ahi Tuna Tar Tar ($20):
This dish also includes avocado,
crostini and a leafy
garnish that is also edible.
It also includes lemon for
diners that want a hint of
citrus.
design, power, location
and history. But what’s the
attraction of the cars? Why
do millions congregate at
shows to see them, restored
or in disarray?
Well, at it’s core, it really
isn’t about the cars at
all. It’s about the people.
Actually, it’s isn’t about
the people either, but
the stories they tell. The
experiences. But we can
take this further still as the
stories and people come
from the life we lead and
the thoughts we think.
Whether it’s cars,
cooking, travel, animals
or whatever passion you
have, the thoughts of love
towards those things actually
expand our lives. A
powerful singular movement
toward the expansion
of an advancing life. And
since our perspectives are
all different, yet congregate
around a similar passion,
swapping stories and
sharing experiences are
relatable, inspiring and can
be mind-blowing.
The reason I do what I
do is that I grew up loving
cars. Not really sure why
Fireball Tim Lawrence stands beside a yellow Corvette. Fireball Tim Lawrence/22nd Century Media
as no one in my family felt
the same, although they
did cultivate feelings of
love towards other things.
Architecture, Writing, Performance
and many other
movie related focuses. But
my passion was Cars and
Movies. Specifically how
cars were used as a tool in
film. I loved seeing cars
in TV Shows jumping,
spinning, crashing and doing
things that I otherwise
would never see in the
streets. Controlled action. I
found the men and women
who did these things fascinating.
But the design of these
cars as characters also intrigued
me. If Batman, The
Rock, Tom Hanks or Harrison
Ford had a car, what
would that be like? And
why? To this day, I still ask
these questions, which is
why I love to bring celebrities
to my car shows. But
let’s backtrack to the thinking
for a moment.
At the core of good
thoughts is love. And love,
as you know my fine Malibuites,
is a very powerful
force. A secret that lies
within us to make our lives
exactly what we want it to
be. And those that realize
it, strive every day to fine
tune their lives to reflect
the best of what it can be.
Those still on the journey
will discover that love
is really the only true force
and all the ills of the world
simply come because of
the lack of it. The truth,
the secret to an expanding
life and making all things
better, is to give love to it.
When you realize this, then
your life becomes about
giving and not getting.
I don’t care what you’re
into. Cars, planes, football,
movies or singing. My
parents knew early on that
if I expressed love toward
something, they needed to
feed that. Love cars? Get
Fireball more. Love travel?
Let’s go somewhere. Love
movies? Let’s pile in the
station wagon and hit a
flick. All a product of
choices.
So why do people love
cars? Because we simply
want more love in
our lives. And since you
can’t get too much of it,
it’s completely free, and
the more you exhibit the
more comes back to you,
then it’s a pretty good deal
nowadays.
Car people love cars.
Surfers love to surf. Ocean
people love to be by the
ocean. And we Malibuites
should love each other.
Imagine what our town
would become if we all did
that? So join me, come to
one of my shows and tell
me what you love. I guarantee
smiles all around,
and you’ll soak up the gift
that lies in giving.

Hairspray
From Page 23
ter, we will teach our kids
that racism is bad, and when
they are adults, hopefully it
will be gone,” Leroy said.
When Porter and Holland
slated “Hairspray” for
a three-week summer camp,
all the recent tumult and
violence in America concerning
race relations had
not erupted. Members of the
troupe were keenly aware of
the timing of those events.
Siblings Travis and Andrew
Springer share the role of
Seaweed.
Andrew, 13, characterizes
Seaweed as a really
nice dude who doesn’t care
about a person’s skin color.
Playing the role, he said,
“takes you way back to the
spot” in American history
where civil rights issues
were at the fore.
“Racism still happens today,”
Andrew said. “There
is police brutality and Black
Lives Matter. We need to
try to stop it all around the
world.”
Eleven-year-old Sophia
Springer, who plays Seaweed’s
sister, Inez, said
Porter told the cast that a
baby learns by watching
what the parents do and that
racism is taught.
Putting together “Hairspray”
in a three-week
summer camp was no small
feat. Holland and Porter,
however, took the time to
discuss the show’s themes.
“What I love about Dee
Dee and Julia is how hard
they work with the children,”
parent Shelley Myers said.
As Roger Ebert said in
reviewing “Hairspray”
years ago, “You know the
story, you’ve seen the movie,
and heard all about the
musical, and you think you
know what to expect.”
However, each rendition
of the play differs with the
times in which the production
is performed. As the
cast of characters notes,
the underlying themes in
“Hairspray” are happening
right now. It is very real for
the Malibu kids doing this
production.
Girls Basketball
Young team grows together over summer league play
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
The Malibu High School
girls basketball team have hit
the reset button on last season,
when the Sharks started
five seniors and had one its
most successful seasons in
the program’s history.
Now with those girls
graduated, this year’s team
will feature a host of fresh
faces, many of them new
to MHS. But the new-look
Sharks are taking this summer
break to bond on the
court and build the chemistry
needed to navigate
their first season together.
The team recently ended
a five-game frosh-soph
summer league and finished
3-2, Sharks head
coach Andy Meyer said.
Playing with girls of similar
ages should help the
team “get a taste of high
school basketball” without
having them play against
teams with much more experience,
he said.
“It’s a learning process
and this was the first step in
that process,” Meyer said.
The young Sharks players
have shown Meyer that
they understand basketball
concepts and terminology,
even at such a young
age, Meyer said. He added
that the team works well
together and also runs the
fastbreak well.
The team practiced only
five times over the course
of the summer, Meyer said,
so much of the regular season
could consist of the
players and coach learning
each other.
“This is going to be a
team where over half of
them are going to be brand
new,” Meyer said. “So
they’ve got to learn the
terms I use, the offense I
use, the defense [and] outof-bounds
plays. I lot of
stuff I have shown them
brand new. It’s like starting
from scratch.”
Charlotte Dyne, an incoming
freshman for the
Sharks, said getting some
playing time with her new
teammates — even if it’s
been limited up to this point
— can help the team moving
forward.
“We have had an advantage
by having some games
together,” Dyne said, “so
we all got to know each
other and see how we play
together.”
Meyer finds himself in
the same position now as
he did for years ago, when
the stellar team of last year
were all freshman players.
The team won only one
game that entire season.
But while Meyer admitted
that he never likes to
lose, he is not all that worried
about the win-loss record
this season.
“I have no idea how many
[games] we’re going to win
or lose,” Meyer said. “I just
know that if there are struggles,
a lot of it will be due
to inexperience. And as long
as the girls don’t get discouraged
[and] I don’t get
discouraged, we’ll be OK.”

Linden dreams to be a pro motocross rider
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
On a summer day about
11 years ago, a young
Kevyn Linden, wearing an
outfit consisting of a pink
T-shirt, jean skirt and Ugg
boots, prepared for the ride
of her life.
In the pits of the motorsports
track in Lake Elsinore,
Linden climbed on
a borrowed, blue dirt bike,
revved the engine and took
off.
“It was a very natural
feeling,” Linden said. “It
wasn’t uncomfortable or
scary for me.”
As they say, the rest is
history. Within a year, Linden
was racing dirt bikes on
real tracks.
Now a 16-year-old rising
junior at Malibu High
School, Linden spends her
days preparing for her next
race and is well on her way
to her dream of becoming
a professional motocross
racer.
Linden practices on
tracks at least once a week,
working on her technique
and focus in an effort to
get faster. But in between,
she trains daily with a rowing
machine, traveling the
equivalent of 3,000 meters,
to improve her endurance.
She also spins on her stationery
bicycle.
On top of that, Linden
follows a strict diet where
she eats mostly chicken,
fish and vegetables. All
of that work prepares her
for when she races against
packs of boys and girls
looking to best her on the
track.
“Do all your training
during the week, and riding
and racing is the privilege,”
Linden said, reciting one of
her father’s mantras.
“I just want to
be the best. Not
just the best
girl, but the
best.”
Kevyn Linden
Linden said she hardly
has any time to do anything
else besides train for races
and work her job at Marmalade
Cafe; however, she
loves the sport so much that
she even looks forward to
training, she said.
But looking at her, one
wouldn’t think Linden
spends her weekends zipping
through dirt tracks and
performing jumps against
other riders. She offers a
bubbly personality, her favorite
color is pink and her
racing helmet features a
floral design.
“Since it is such a guy
sport, I try to bring a little
girly into it,” Linden said.
Despite Linden’s choice
of clothing and accent colors,
she only compares her
racing worth to other boys
on the track. When she
competes, she’s looking to
come in first before any of
the male competitors, even
though she’s only officially
racing against the female
class of riders.
“I just want to be the
best,” Linden said. “Not
just the best girl, but the
best.”
Brett, Linden’s father,
said he’s told his daughter
over the last couple of years
that her racing goals should
not involve the women racers.
“It’s obviously better for
her to ride with the guys
because they are faster and
they’re doing things that a
lot of the pro women can’t
do at all,” Brett said. “So if
she starts to emulate those
guys, she’s just going to be
a better rider.”
Linden said her proudest
moment was only a few
weeks ago while competing
in the first of a fiverace
Transworld Motocross
series. Right at the start of
the race, her bike shot her
to the far right, placing her
far behind the other racers.
The bad start made Linden
angry, she said, and
she started on her quest to
catch up to the other riders.
On the second to last turn in
the final lap, she overtook
the first-place girl — who
is also her rival — and won
the race.
“When you’re either
crazy mad, hyper or happy,
you just tend to ride
better,” Linden said. “So
much adrenaline was going
through me.”
Fortunately, Linden has
never broken a bone while
riding, she said, but she has
been involved in some ugly
crashes. During a practice
session in May, Linden hit
a rock right before a big
jump, causing her feet to
come off the pegs of her
bike. When she landed, the
impact flung her forward
and she fell helmet-first on
the dirt, which she later discovered
caused a concussion.
Her motorcycle also
briefly landed on top of her.
It took her two weeks
to shake the effects of the
crash and ride normally,
she said.
Linden’s overall goal
with motocross is to become
a professional, travel
and learn more about sport,
she said.
Even after she retires
from racing, she wishes to
be involved in any way she
can.
“It’s such a bonding
thing,” Linden said of the
sport. “When you ride, you
always have something to
talk about with someone
else that rides, even if you’re
completely different riders.
It’s a very family sport.”
Brett thinks the sky’s
the limit for his daughter,
whether she rides or not, he
said. But his main focus is
for her not to put herself in
harm’s way.
“My main priority with
her riding a racing career is
just for her to be safe and
never push it and know
what she’s doing and never
ride over her head,” Brett
said.
On the track, Linden
wears No. 97 — 7 is her
favorite number and she
was born on April 9. And
no matter what happens,
it seems she’ll be wearing
that number for some time.
“It’s not just the riding
that I love,” Linden said. “I
love everything in the sport
— even the danger.”

Ariana Martinez added to
women’s soccer coach staff
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Pepperdine women’s
soccer head coach Tim
Ward announced the hiring
of assistant coach Ariana
Martinez on July 14 to fill
out the Waves’ coaching
staff.
Martinez comes to Pepperdine
after a distinguished
playing career on
both the collegiate and national
levels, and brings a
wealth of coaching experience
from the youth and
prep ranks. She replaces
Mary Grace Schmidt, who
left to pursue other interests
outside of coaching. Max
Rooke was also elevated
to associate head coach for
the Waves recently.
“We are very pleased
to announce the hiring of
Ariana,” said Ward. “I’ve
known and watched Ari
play for over 10 years now
and I’ve always been impressed
not only by her
ability as a soccer player,
but equally with her character
as a woman. She
has a wonderful ability
to fiercely compete at the
highest level on the field,
while still maintaining the
respect of all who play with
and against her. She has a
strong desire to teach and
with her unique set of playing
experiences, we feel
she is well-qualified to help
our girls here at Pepperdine
reach new levels.”
Martinez played four
years of Pac-12 soccer,
starting her collegiate career
at UCLA in 2010 before
transferring to California
in 2012 and finishing
her career there. She was
also called up to the Mexican
National Team as a
college sophomore in 2011
and played in the 2012 Under-20
World Cup in Japan
with Mexico as well.
“I am incredibly honored
and excited about the opportunity
to join the Pepperdine
women’s soccer
staff and look forward to
working for such an accomplished
head coach as
Tim Ward and coach Max
Rooke,” said Martinez. “I
am just as excited to work
with the high caliber student
athletes that Pepperdine
University attracts and
hope to contribute in their
development on and off the
field.”
As a dual citizen of the
United States and Mexico,
Martinez gained experience
in both countries’ national
team development systems,
and eventually made four
caps for the Mexican National
Team. She played
in three games at the 2012
China Football Association
International Tournament
with Mexico and played
a full 90 minutes against
the French National Team
in 2011. Martinez played
in five games at the U-20
World Cup in 2012.
As both a defender and
midfielder during her time
in college, Martinez played
her first two seasons at
UCLA before eventually
transferring to Cal. She
served on a defensive unit
that surrendered one goal
or less in 19 of 23 matches
in 2010 and recorded two
assists from the back line
on both UCLA goals in
a 2-1 victory over No. 3
Notre Dame, the eventual
National Champions. Martinez
also earned Player
of the Match honors in an
NCCA Tournament game
against Stanford.
With the Golden Bears,
Martinez saw time as both
a defender and midfielder,
playing in 38 total contests.
Competing primarily
in the midfield as a junior,
Martinez scored two goals,
one of which was the
game-winner against Pepperdine
in the 2013 NCAA
Tournament. She earned
Pac-12 All-Academic recognition
