WELCOME TO
THE ALL GOLD
WELCOME TO ANOTHER EDITION OF THE ALL GOLD, THE
FREE TO DOWNLOAD, ONLINE SPORTS MAGAZINE THAT
FOCUSES ON THE ADVENTURES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
GLOUCESTERSHIRE’S UNIQUE RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM.
4
In this edition, we’ve got
some great coverage of the
latest action in Kingstone
Press League 1, reviews of
our emerging reserves side
and some fascinating insights
into the challenging world
of professional sport from
Tom Ford, Cheltenham’s own
squash sensation, as well as
news of the University’s latest
sporting venture.
While we inevitably focus
on the action on the pitch,
especially those of us who
find the time to get down to
the Prince of Wales stadium
this Sunday, this week has
made many of us think about
how tough it can be to run
a professional sports team
behind the scenes.
We are exceptionally fortunate
at the All Golds to have a
superb group of people who
work crazy hours in order to
bring professional rugby to
our region. The rewards
from this can seem a
long way away if your
team is struggling, but
we have some amazing
people who are totally
committed to their
sport and to the All
Golds.
Step forward Trevor
Moss, Pat Evans,
Patrick Baines, Chris Wilson,
Martin Lovegrove and Dave
Friend – you all do a fantastic
job and we are incredibly
grateful for what you do.
However, at least at the All
Golds we can look forward
to next season with some
certainty and growing
confidence. This is quite
clearly not the case at York
City Knights, and it was a
shock to read the statements
last week that told of the
strained relations between
this historic club and the other
stakeholders in the city. The
Knights are effectively being
wound up, and the players are
being encouraged to find new
clubs.
Although there appear to be
some saviours on the horizon,
keen to maintain the sport in
the city, it seems clear that the
club in its current form will not
continue.
For everyone’s sake – the
players, officials, staff, sponsors
and particularly the volunteers
who put in so many hours – we
hope their situation is resolved
soon.
Back to the action on the
pitch and the All Golds only
have three home games left,
including this weekend’s clash
with long-time rivals Oxford.
We finish our season with a
tasty derby against South
Wales Scorpions, and are
hoping to enjoy an entertaining
end to the season.
We’re encouraging you to
bring a friend to that final
game to celebrate another
rollercoaster year, and are
delighted to announce that if
you buy your ticket in advance,
you can secure a second ticket
for half price. Please do your
bit to give our boys a decent
send off in the last match, and
get yourself and a friend down
to the Prince of Wales for our
final game.
Thanks as ever to Chris
Wilson and Patrick Baines
for their hard work in
creating the content for
this edition, and to the
amazing Craig Paul Design
for his sterling work on the
final product.
UNIVERSITY OF
GLOUCESTERSHIRE
NETS NEW SPORTING
FRANCHISE
LAST MONTH, ENGLAND NETBALL ANNOUNCED THE LINE-UP
FOR THE 2017 VITALITY NETBALL SUPERLEAGUE (VNSL) AND
A JOINT BID BY THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE AND
THE UNIVERSITY OF WORCESTER WON A PLACE.
6
The VNSL now features eight
clubs from England and one
each from Scotland and
Wales but England Netball’s
decision was not without
controversy. The expanded
competition saw the newlychristened
Severn Stars join
the Scottish Sirens, who will
play at the Emirates Arena
in Glasgow, and Coventrybased
Wasps included at
the expense of the
Yorkshire
Jets who
finished
bottom of the
2016 table with
just one win
from their 14
matches.
Mick
Donovan, Deputy Pro
Vice Chancellor (Inclusive
Sport & Educational
Development) at Worcester
and the Stars’ franchise
Director, said: “We have been
working with the team at
Gloucestershire for over one
year to prepare the strongest
bid possible. The Severn
Stars partnership boasts a
wealth of talent, experience
and potential from within a
wide range of partners. Many
people have worked hard to
bring elite netball to the
city and we are really
looking forward to the
challenge ahead.”
The
Severn
Stars will
face derby
opposition from Team
Bath who have been one of
the forces of English netball
since the Superleague was
introduced, winning a record
five titles, featuring 76
internationals and regularly
attracting crowds close to
2,000.
Title holders Surrey
Storm, Celtic Dragons,
Loughborough Lightning,
Hertfordshire Mavericks,
Manchester Thunder and
Team Northumbria make up
the ten-strong competition
and all have a four-year tenure
in the Superleague before
applications are invited for
possible further expansion.
“We are thrilled to announce
the new line-up for the 2017
Vitality Netball Superleague,”
England Netball chief
executive Joanna Adams
said following an intensive
application and selection
process that attracted huge
interest from netball clubs and
businesses throughout the UK.
“Each team submitted an
exceptional proposal which
we are certain will make for an
incredibly exciting season,” she
added.
Both Gloucestershire and
Worcester universities have
strong traditions of developing
take up her role for preseason
training soon after.”
Having got a home venue
in place, a head coach to
oversee matters on the court,
the challenge now is to build
a squad to compete. For a
franchise setting out on a
journey at the top level of
the game it will be a tough
one but one that will present
opportunities for ambitious
players.
talented players and they both
also have associations with
elite teams from other sports,
including the University of
Gloucestershire’s All Golds
Rugby League Club and the
Worcester Wolves British
Basketball League team.
Home games are due to be
played initially at the University
of Worcester Arena, before
they are shared once new
facilities at the University of
Gloucestershire’s Oxstalls
campus in Gloucester are
ready.
The first major signing for
the Stars is former Australian
Diamonds netball sensation,
Mo’onia Gerrard as Head
Coach.
Donovan said: “We are
absolutely thrilled to be able to
announce that Mo’onia will be
the Severn Stars’ Head Coach
and believe it really sends
out a clear message about
our ambitions to succeed in
netball’s top flight, whilst also
bringing an ambassador to our
local netball communities.”
During a stellar career, Gerrard
played over 182 national league
games for the New South
Wales Swifts and the Adelaide
Thunderbirds. She forged a
reputation second to none as
a reliable, uncompromising
defender playing in 68 test
matches for Australia winning
the 2007 Netball World Cup
and a silver medal in the 2010
Commonwealth Games in
Delhi.
As a coach, she has worked
with some of the finest young
Australian talent as she helps
nurture the next generation of
Australian internationals.
Gerrard said: “Being appointed
the Severn Stars Head Coach
in 2017 comes with great
responsibility to breed and
develop the South West/
Midlands players in England.
It’s also exciting for me to get
amongst the English culture
and migrate my Australian
approach to the England
style.”
University of Gloucestershire’s
Anita Navin, Severn Stars
Director of Netball
commented: “Mo’onia
shares our vision to build a
competitive squad but also
to ensure the next generation
of England players are given
opportunities and a quality
coaching experience.
“Mo’onia and her family are
moving to the South West of
England in August and she will
Navin admits the challenge
will be getting the blend right
between talent from abroad,
established and emerging
England players and talented
local youngsters.
“I really want to make sure
we don’t just bring players to
the area. We want to grow
the young talent and there is
a pretty good base of 17/18
year-old players in the area,”
Navin told Sky Sports.
“So we have committed to
saying we will use imports
if we need them but initially
we want to know what
players are coming to us from
England and who can play for
their country - whether they
are U19 or U21.”
The first game will be played
in February and the Stars
face a busy schedule as they
work towards building a
playing and coaching team to
compete in the Superleague.
The Severn Stars soon hope
to be able to announce dates
for trials for those players
who would like to join the
2017 campaign. Follow them
on Twitter @SevernStars or
TOM FORD...
A SQUASH PLAYER
IN PARIS
10
I decided to start writing
for the All Gold magazine
because I had become tired
of writing just about squash.
I saw this as an opportunity
to not only talk about the
highs and lows of being
a professional athlete,
but more about my other
interests and how I explore
them by playing on the
PSA (Professional Squash
Association) World Tour.
I have been playing squash
for 16 years. That may
seem like a long time but
from the moment I started
playing I was hooked and
that hasn’t changed since.
What started as a hobby,
very quickly became a
vehicle that has allowed
me to travel the world and
get exposure to all kinds of
cultures and experiences.
love doing most, which is
why, for me, doing things
outside of the squash
court is imperative for my
continued enjoyment of the
tour.
My passion for photography
ignited from travelling.
Seeing so many beautiful
and unique places, I wanted
to portray how I saw them.
I love how an image can tell
a story or create an emotion
without the use of words.
Another of my interests is
coffee, which I assure you
will feature consistently in
future articles!
Wherever I find myself,
I seek out the best
independently owned
coffee shops and then
plan what other sights I
would like to see around
that! I think this is the best
way to get a rich and true
experience of where you
are because such cafés
tend to be in more cultural
neighbourhoods and are run
by friendly locals who have
a real passion for coffee and
the city they are from.
Paris. A city that exudes
culture and charisma.
Naturally this was an easy
choice for my first of
three tournaments to end
the season. As I play for
a team in France I have
been many times, but have
However, there are many
difficult parts of being an
individual athlete. It can
sometimes be a lonely
existence, living out of your
suitcase and spending most
of your time either on a
plane, train or in your hotel
room. I find this completely
sucks the life out of what I
www.allgoldsrugby.com
modern art. I considered
going to the Louvre, but
was informed by the barista
in Café Kitsune that “I would
need about a week to see
everything!” As one week
underground was not an
option, the Museé D’Orsay
served as a nice alternative
which I managed to look
around in about three hours.
never had the chance to
fully explore. Fortunately I
was staying with one of my
friends from the tour so I
jumped at the opportunity
for an extended stay. The
tournament was a $25,000
Event at Jeu De Paume, a
classy old rackets club, only
walking distance from the
Eiffel Tower and Arc De
Triomphe. It always amazes
me the peculiar places in
which you can find a squash
club. This place blended
in as if it were another set
of ornate apartments on
the narrow Parisian ruelle!
After working out the secret
knock to enter through
the grand wooden door, I
qualified with relative ease
to get into the Main Draw. I
then narrowly lost to World
#35 Adrian Waller. This was
the best I had played in a
long while so I felt optimistic
about the following two
events in Zurich and Kent.
With my tournament over
and free to roam, I went
to relax in the gardens
of the Eiffel Tower and
make a plan. Hopping on
the Metro, the best way
to get around the city, I
took Line 1 to Museé Du
Louvre. One of the most
artistic and historical areas
of the French capital, it’s
a must see location for
tourists and locals alike. I
walked through Le Palais
Royal which led me to the
Japanese quarter where the
first café of the day resided;
Telescopé. Typical of many
speciality coffee shops this
was a very minimalistic
space, but without doubt
served the best coffee I
had in Paris. I had a filter
made on Aeropress with a
deliciously fruity Ethiopian
bean recommended by the
educated barista. I also liked
that they offered no Wi-Fi
to encourage people to
stay off their phones and to
socialise instead.
With the caffeine hit in
full force I buzzed past
the Pyramide Du Louvre,
through the Jardin Des
Tuileries, over the Seine on
the Passerelle De Solférino
and arrived at the Museé
D’Orsay; the museum of
Sampling splendid coffee
and exploring the arts of
Paris clearly had a positive
impact on me as I made
the semi-final in Zurich and
topped the season off by
winning my sixth PSA title
in Kent.
I was humbled to finish
the season with a win but
for me it was just a good
reflection of the mental
state I was in; which is often
the difference between
winning and losing. Now
as the season has come
to a close I will be making
my way to South Africa
for a holiday. Its dramatic
landscapes and easy going
people are the reason I fell
in love with the country
and I can’t wait to immerse
myself further.
ALL GOLDS vs.
OXFORD
PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
3PM, SUNDAY 31st JULY, PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
12
The All Golds are in action on
Sunday facing familiar foes,
Oxford.
The All Golds will be looking
to do a quick-fire double on
Oxford having won 52-34
at Abingdon earlier in the
month. Both teams come
into Sunday’s game off the
back of hugely disappointing
results - Oxford were
hammered 48-6 by a rapidly
improving Coventry and the
All Golds were demolished
50-24 by Newcastle
Thunder in a result that Lee
Greenwood has called ‘the
worst of his reign’.
Greenwood has admitted
to being extremely
downhearted with the
campaign so far but has
called on his side to finish
the season with a flourish.
“Last week was a huge
disappointment but we
can’t feel sorry for ourselves.
Sunday will be two teams
with poor defensive records
meeting so expect to see
some tries”, said the All Golds
head coach.
“I take full responsibility
for my team not being fit
enough or having the desire
and attitude to work hard
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
for each other in defence. It
is something you struggle
to fix during a season when
you’re part time.
“Recruitment for next year
is going well and the guys
that stay or come in will be
honest and hard working
that want to improve. We
have had too many in the
squad this year that did not
fit that criteria.
“Team spirit takes you a
long way in rugby league
and again, I hold myself
responsible that we don’t
have that. We’ll use these
last five games to try to
build some positivity around
the place.”
Prop James Walter is
rated extremely doubtful
for Sunday’s game after
suffering a dead leg at
Newcastle. Winger Mo
Agoro is another who is
touch and go for the game
after picking up a knock last
Sunday.
Greenwood continued: “We
have won six competitive
games this season and we
won nine last year - it would
be nice to top that but it will
not be easy. We have a few
guys out injured but that
will create opportunities for
some of the younger guys
to show their potential.”
edged Hemel Stags home 21-20
in a nail-biting game; and this
season, history repeated itself as
Coleman’s bandaged boot stole
the points.
The All Golds deserved
something from the game and
they had chances to take at least
a point but Brendon Newton and
Kieran Hyde both missed inviting
drop goal attempts late on in the
game.
The All Golds perhaps have only
themselves to blame having built
a 10-2 lead through a Lewis Reece
try made in Wales with Steve
Parry and Morgan Evans the
principal architects and Parry’s
by now customary score. By the
interval, they were 16-10 behind as
the Skolars’ big forwards found
a weakness on the All Golds’ left
edge defence and ran in three
tries.
The second half started well with
tries from Lamont Bryan and
Reece putting the All Golds back
in front. An injury to the Skolars’
talisman Coleman seemed to
signal the end of their hopes but
he stayed on the pitch and was
involved in the move that led to
Sam Nash’s try, added the difficult
touchline goal before limping up
to score the winning point with
five minutes left.
The All Golds had chances to level
matters but Hyde was wide with
his drop goal attempt and a last
desperate attack following Hyde’s
chip for Newton came to nothing
with the last play of the game.
OXFORD 34 – 58 ALL
GOLDS
Sunday 10 July, at Tilsley
Park,
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
Joe McClean’s four tries were the
highlight of the All Golds’ first win
in Oxford since 2013 but though
the side were potent with ball in
hand, scoring ten times, they kept
letting Oxford back into the game
and only after Phil Cowburn’s
interception try ten minutes from
the end, could they feel they had
the win in their pocket.
McClean had a hat-trick inside
the first 15 minutes as the All
Golds took advantage of their
hosts’ defensive frailties through
the middle to build an 18-4
advantage. Jack Uren added a
well-taken debut try but the lead
was reduced to four points before
James Walter scored just before
the interval .
The All Golds again showed
they could score points as this
time they built a seemingly
commanding 34-14 lead through
Lewis Reece and Walter’s second
of the game early in the second
half but failed to really kick on
and bury a side that worked hard
and showed some neat touches
especially when Daniel Igbinedion
was in possession.
At 28-34 Oxford had the
momentum and looked likely
winners but Cowburn went over
for a try awarded after a long
discussion between the officials,
McClean scored his fourth and
Cowburn snaffled a stray pass to
score from his own half to send
the All Golds past the half century
for the first time this season.
Oxford mounted a late flurry
and scored the final try of a
harum scarum game leaving the
All Golds clinging grimly to the
points for the final few moments.
Sunday 24 July, at
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
In rugby league, good defending
is part communication and part
physical and mental commitment.
Time after time this season, the
All Golds seem to simply melt
away, conceding try after try until
it becomes embarrassing. All too
often, the application seems to
go missing and so it was in the
third quarter of this game when
Thunder ran in five unanswered
tries, some of them simpler than
would be a challenge set on the
training ground.
Steve Parry’s early score – his 16th
of the season – had the All Golds
ahead briefly and the penalty try
awarded when Kieran Hyde was
obstructed chasing his own kick
through gave the side heart at
the interval as they trailed by just
eight points.
Twenty minutes later they trailed
by 38 and though Kadeem
Williams and Lamont Bryan
scored late tries to reduce the
margin of defeat, they did little to
soothe Lee Greenwood’s anger
as he described the performance
as one of the worst he had seen
during his time in charge. “I
thought we had a decent team
on paper but it was the same
old deficiencies again - a lack of
desire which is very frustrating
and massively disappointing,” he
said.
UPDATE FROM
THE BIRTHPLACE
OF INTERNATIONAL
RUGBY LEAGUE
ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE INTERNATIONAL AND
REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE PLACED AT THE TOP
OF THE SPORT’S PRIORITIES WILL BE PLEASED WITH
RECENT ANNOUNCEMENTS.
16
The 2017 World Cup draw and
the various venues appear
very exciting. From an England
viewpoint the team will play its
group games against Australia,
Lebanon and France in
Melbourne, Sydney and Perth
respectively. The 2019 State
of Origin series will see New
South Wales and Queensland
featuring in one of the three
matches in Perth also.
The recent disturbing events at
York are directly attributable to
that club’s loss some years ago
now of its famous old ground
which was located so close to
the city walls and the Minster.
This is a warning to all clubs –
including the All Golds – to the
effect that if you don’t have
ownership or security of tenure
at your own headquarters with
The man to whom we all owe so much
Therefore two recent visits to
South Wales were especially
encouraging as both West
Wales Raiders in Llanelli and
Torfaen Tigers in Cwmbran
appear to have negotiated
excellent agreements with their
local councils for long term
leases on chosen venues. Oh
that the All Golds could be the
beneficiaries of such largesse!
17
all the associated benefits of
access to facilities and revenue
streams then you are very
vulnerable to the whims of
others.
I had the great pleasure
recently of attending the
Cheltenham Primary Schools’
Touch tournament at the
Folley and what a splendid
occasion it was. It was a great
joy to see some 28 teams of
boys and girls “playing the
ball” in the traditional and
magnificent fashion. The
beautiful weather and very
professional organisation
provided the perfect
backcloth to a memorable
day. Congratulations then to
Dan Garbutt and all his staff
including many impressive
undergraduates of ours.
Finally similar accolades are
due to some of our young
players of the future who
have played so well for our
CLS side this season. Both
Mitchell Dent and Jack Uren
are Bristolians and gained
selection for England Colleges
whilst Gloucester boy Luke
Stephens and Callum Bradbury
from Wolverhampton joined
Jack in making their All Golds’
professional debuts in victory
at Oxford.
YOUNG PLAYERS EXCEL
AT CHELTENHAM PRIMARY
RUGBY LEAGUE FESTIVAL
AROUND 200 YEAR 3 AND 4 PUPILS FROM ACROSS
CHELTENHAM HAD THEIR FIRST EXPERIENCE OF RUGBY
LEAGUE THIS WEEK AT THE CHELTENHAM PRIMARY
SCHOOLS’ SKY TRY RUGBY LEAGUE FESTIVAL, HOSTED
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE’S FOLLEY
PLAYING FIELDS.
18
The annual event is the
culmination of six weeks of
coaching undertaken across
13 Cheltenham Primary
schools by community
coaching staff from the All
Golds. The coaching is part
of a wider rugby league
development programme
run by the club and
sponsored by Sky Sports
through the RFL’s Sky Try
programme which aims
to deliver opportunities to
150,000 children and young
people across the nation.
With 28 teams from ten
schools attending the
Festival - on the hottest day
of the year - a busy day of
rugby league ensued with all
teams competing hard and
having a superb experience.
The format delivered to
8- and 9-year-olds within
the programme is the RFL’s
Primary Rugby League
format. This is a modified
touch game that allows
children with a range of
abilities to handle the ball
more often and compete on
an equal footing.
With each team playing six
games during the festival,
players were able to develop
throughout the day. At
the end, individuals were
recognised across the teams
as exhibiting a range of
attributes such as teamwork,
honesty, self-belief and
determination with special
awards being given out for
those players who competed
in the right manner during
the tournament.
The event was the
conclusion of a schools’
Rugby League Programme
that has seen the game
played by over a thousand
children and young people
from across the county.
Starting in December
with the RFL’s flagship
competition, Champion
Schools, the All Golds
have worked with over
40 Gloucestershire
schools alongside talent
development programmes
and other community-based
coaching.
The programme has
also delivered coach
development programmes
to 35 teachers across the
primary and secondary
sector and engaged with a
range of new schools in this
academic year.
Speaking at the event, Dan
Garbutt who manages the
community programme was
keen to praise his staff in
saying: “We’re lucky to have
an excellent and committed
group of young community
coaches, all students at the
university, that make this
happen.
“Without their tireless work
and ongoing commitment
to improving, we wouldn’t
have had the success we’ve
had and the regional and
national recognition that the
programme receives.”
The All Golds community
programme will be
continuing into the summer
with community club
coaching and the schools
programme will restart in
September.
With an ever-growing
programme, the community
department will be planning
to expand the number of
schools and areas involved
in 2016/17, following a
successful first foray into the
Forest of Dean this year.
FLAME OF THE WEST
FINAL FORTNIGHT
OF FATE
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
There are just two rounds
contenders jockeying for
position in both the Grand
semi finals and Shield semi
finals.
game against Cheltenham
to follow, the two points
are vital for the Cavaliers if
they are to have a chance
of repeating their 2012
the win that could earn
them home advantage in
the Shield competition. The
the win partly in revenge
for last season’s Grand
Final defeat at the hands of
the Romans and partly to
CLS REVIEW
THE ACTION INTENSIFIES
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
The London Chargers laid down
their title credentials at Gordon
League RFC with a comfortable
48-6 win over the All Golds’
CLS side. The foundations were
laid in the first period as they
amassed 26 unanswered points
and though the All Golds pulled
a score back early in the second
period, three tries in eight
minutes soon afterwards put the
result way beyond doubt.
26
Having twice beaten leaders
Valley Cougars and drawn with
the champions Nottingham
Outlaws, the Chargers were
expected to put up a good
showing and that they did as
they took a fourth-minute lead
and never looked back.
Tries came at regular intervals
in an entertaining game played
at a good pace by both sides
with relatively few unforced
errors but the Chargers were
the better side with ball in hand.
Their scrambling defence was
good, too, with the All Golds’
only score coming from Luke
Stephens who burrowed over
from close range ten minutes
into the second period.
After that, the Chargers stepped
on the gas with three quickfire
scores, the pick being Brady
Stewart’s deft chip over the top
and juggling act to reclaim the
ball and score under the posts.
Thanks to their win over the
All Golds, London Chargers
leap-frogged Valley Cougars
who lost at Nottingham Outlaws
34-4. The Outlaws moved to
just a point behind the Cougars
as they cruised to a surprisingly
comfortable win at Highfields.
Sam Campbell opened the
scoring for the home side
with an early try goaled by
Luca Costante but they had to
withstand intense pressure until
Liam Watton touched down
midway through the half for the
visitors.
Two tries in the ten minutes
before the break from Paul
Calland and George Strachan,
both goaled by Costante,
changed the momentum of the
game in the Outlaws’ favour
and they went on to score early
in the second period through
Adam Cunliffe.
Further tries from Alex Whittle
and Jack Pearson with Costante
finishing with five successful
kicks from six attempts put the
Outlaws right back in the race
for the play-offs.
Coventry Bears were unable
to raise a side for their trip to
Torfaen Tigers and slipped
below the West Wales Raiders
in the table.
The Raiders continued their
climb up the table the following
week with a 40-18 win over the
All Golds CLS side thanks to two
tries each from Mathew Davies
and Andrew Rees-Spowart.
Curtis Ford, Tom Stratford and
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
Daf Phillips also went over and
Daf Daniels landed four goals.
Following an early sin-binning
for Phillips, James Mason had
given the All Golds an early lead
with a try in his first appearance
of the season. They were
pegged back but Liam Rice-
Wilson and Chris True scored,
Paul King adding a goal, to
give the All Golds a 14-10 lead
coming up to the interval.
Rees-Spowart’s try sent the
teams into the break level at 14-
14 but the second half belonged
to the Raiders as they played
some of their best rugby of the
season to ease to a 40-14 lead.
Mason’s second touchdown
in the final few minutes was a
consolation score for the All
Golds who slip out of the playoff
places with four games left in
the season.
Round 13 saw wins for the
top two in markedly different
circumstances. Leaders
London Chargers thrashed
Torfaen Tigers 88-0 while
the Nottingham Outlaws
were pushed all the way by
Coventry Bears who eventually
succumbed 34-24.
The Outlaws were never
behind after taking an early
stranglehold on the game
thanks to tries from Coryn
Ward, Jon Christie and Jimmy
Goodwin in the opening 12
minutes. The Bears pulled a
converted try back from Toby
Williams before the break
but the Outlaws extended
their advantage early in the
second period through George
Strachan.
Roddy Jones and Williams
crossed for the Bears but
Strachan ensured the Outlaws
remained out of reach with his
second of the day before setting
up Goodwin for his second.
Alec Wheatley crossed for
the Outlaws’ final try, Luca
Costante adding his third goal
before Dylan Bale earned a
consolation score for the Bears,
Tawanda Chipadza’s fourth goal
completed the scoring.
The following week saw the All
Golds drop further out of playoff
contention following a 52-16
defeat at Torfaen Tigers and
Coventry Bears’ surprise 34-18
win over London Chargers.
The All Golds started in superb
fashion at Cwmbran RFC
scoring twice in the opening
ten minutes through Connor
Jones and Sam Hodge both
beautifully created and finished
in impressive style to lead 10-0
but after a sin-binning for each
side, the Tigers began to play
and overcame the deficit to
lead 16-10 at the break with
tries from Micki Witts, Jarad
Hinnem and Mike Edwards and
two Matt Cummins goals.
The All Golds travelled shorthanded
and were down to the
bare 13 men after debutant
Tom Chipchase was injured
after ten minutes. Two tries
from Witts early in the second
half extended the lead, which
had become 30 points by the
time Mitchell Dent ploughed
over to score just past the hour
mark.
Tom Matthews and Louie
Pengelly crossed to add
to tries from Hinnem and
Cummins who finished with
eight goals for the Tigers.
The Welsh derby at Parc
