Publisher 22nd Century Media hosted its third annual Back on the Bus – A Back- To-School Expo to celebrate the start of a new school year with families at the Tinley Park Convention Center on Saturday, Aug. 13. The free expo offered scholastic resources, princess and mascot appearances, a back-to-school fashion show, booths for more than 40 vendors and more. Free parking and free gift bags were offered to the first 500 attendees. Heather Warthen, chief events officer for 22nd Century Media, said the expo was designed to appeal both to children and their parents. “This is the third year 22nd Century Media hosted this event, and this was just a good, fun last day for kids to enjoy before the school year starts,” Warthen said. Warthen said this year, 22nd Century Media partnered with The Bridge Teen Center to present a fashion show. The Bridge Teen Center’s new thrift store provided the clothes that were styled by personal stylist Jenny Applegate. The center offered the fashion show as a class for the youths, with Applegate serving as the instructor. “With The Bridge Teen Lola Sonne, of Frankfort, grabs a welcome bag Saturday, Aug. 13, during Back on the Bus – A Back-to-School Expo at the Tinley Park Convention Center. Children were not the only beneficiaries of the expo, as multiple resources were aimed at serving parents. Lorie Smerz, who represented returning vendor Chicago Parent magazine, said parents were exposed to great educational opportunities, just like their children. “This was a good way for parents to prepare themselves for back to school,” Smerz said. “We’re always thinking about the kids and their school supplies and the pencils they need, and I think this was actually a good way to get the parents ready for back to school to show them what resources are in their own communities.” Tinley Park resident James Peterson said he and his children all took away something positive from the expo. His children Kara, 8, Erin, 6, and Gavin, 4, enjoyed exploring the various vendors’ tables while he learned about the different educational options and services available. He said he would recommend the expo to fellow parents. “There’s a lot of good information on a lot of things for my kids’ future and graduation,” said Peterson, a first-time expo attendee. But she said next year she hopes to see a greater effort toward serving homeschooled children. “This is back to school, and there’s a large group of people home schooling, and I would love to see some home stuff because they need curriculum and … all this stuff, too,” Shaffer said. “They’re going back to school, just not traditionally, so it would be so cool to see a little bit of homeschool ideas.” D135 From Page 4 that timing issue with property taxes by staying about six months [ahead]. “In future years, we may find that we are OK with three months or four months, but, for now, the policy is six months.” The School Board members later voted 7-0 during the regular meeting to approve the public display of the tentative 2017 fiscal year budget for 30 days. School Board saves money on paper, hopes to save on energy The School Board members also voted 7-0 to approve a bid submitted by Midland Paper Company for copy paper in the amount of $41,488.10. During the motion, School Board member Devin Hodge said it was the “lowest responsible bid.” School Board President Laura Berry asked staff if the bid was “significantly less” because of the technology rollout. Staff informed her that it was a reduction of roughly 50 percent. “So, we’ve been saving a lot of money and a lot of trees — about half,” Berry said. “That is awesome.” The School Board members also voted unanimously to issue a notice of intent to withdraw from the Illinois Energy Consortium. “The Illinois Energy Consortium is a consortium of districts and other governmental entities that banded together to purchase energy with the consolidated bidding of all of the [members],” Forn said. “In 2011, this district went out into the general market and found that we could buy electricity cheaper than being in the consortium.” The district was able to get out of the consortium back then by doing a similar withdrawal. Forn said, this year, the district found itself in a similar situation, finding better prices in both gas and electric than what it would have gotten as a member of the consortium.
