Discover the Power of Shared Inquiry
Improve teaching and learning across the curriculum
In Shared Inquiry, students—guided by their teacher—explore a text by discussing open-ended questions and
sharing responses and insights. This method of teaching and learning helps students learn to think about what
they read, express and develop their ideas, and learn from one another. Shared Inquiry enhances all the basic
language arts skills—reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, speaking, and listening—and enables
students to learn more across the curriculum.
Teachers embrace a collaborative approach that
helps them:
• Engage students in higher-level reading, thinking,
and discussion
• Monitor and support comprehension for students
at all reading levels
• Integrate critical thinking and socio-emotional
learning into their curriculum
• Naturally assess students’ progress toward state and
district learning standards
Students who participate in Shared Inquiry build
proficiency in these key areas:
• Reading for meaning
• Utilizing reading comprehension strategies
• Supporting ideas with text evidence
• Considering different points of view
• Listening to others and responding appropriately
• Thoughtfully considering different points of view
• Transferring ideas from discussion to formal
writing
• Contributing to a collaborative, respectful
classroom environment
