SOPRON
T
he written mention of this town comes
from 859. Sopron was a popular residence
of noble families, the memory of which is
preserved in the Esterházy Palace, the Széchenyi
Palace, and others as well. The town successfully
resisted the Tatars, Turks, the Kuruc
movements and the battles of the 1848 revolution
and war of independence. Thus there are
many medieval churches and houses standing
in the town today. The symbol of the town is
the Fire-tower (Tűztorony) built in 1676.
