Michael Phelps has a proportionally longer “wingspan,” Phelps’s arms extend
80 inches (203 centimeters) tip to tip, and his body measures in at 76 inches (193
centimeters) in height. Most of the time, a person’s height normally corresponds
closely to the distance between his outstretched hands. (Recall Leonardo da
Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, that famous sketch of a naked male showing his arm-legtorso
ratios.) Phelps is also said to be double-jointed, according to a Detroit
News blog. His size-14 feet reportedly bend 15 degrees farther at the ankle than
most other swimmers, turning his feet into virtual flippers. This flexibility also
extends to his knees and elbows, possibly allowing him to get more out of each
stroke.

When veteran character actress, Patrika Darbo sold her South Palm
Springs home some 18 years ago, it wasn’t without regret. “I had worked
consistently for years and at the time I was not working as much. We sold
our desert home to downsize and of course the next week I was offered
what turned out to be a 7-year contract at NBC on Days of Our Lives. I
didn’t need to give up my desert residence after all,” says Darbo.
Never one to look at the glass half empty, she realized that she could still
be part of Palm Springs compliments of the many friends she has in the
Coachella Valley. “I found myself coming out to Palm Springs all the time
for parties, Desert AIDS Project walks and anything to help children, pets
and vets. Not to mention all the many many parades,” she laughs.
Darbo hopes the next time she comes to Palm Springs she will have a
Primetime Emmy in tow. She is nominated for Best Actress for Acting
Dead, an internet series in which she plays Margot Mullen, a low-end talent
slash travel agent. The nomination is part of a new category, Short Format
and Darbo is the only one in the running from an independent project.
“The other nominees are attached to a network or major website like Adult
Swim, Funny Or Die or BET. My show is simply found at
www.ActingDead.com,” she says.
“Working on an independent series is truly a rewarding experience,” explains
Darbo. “Lord knows I’m not getting rich but in the end, it’s the final
product that offers creative satisfaction. Oh yeah, and the Emmy nom isn’t
so bad either!”
This bubbly red head is no stranger to Emmys, having garnered a Daytime
Emmy nomination for Days Of Our Lives in 2000. Other recognizable television
work includes stints on The Big Bang Theory, Devious Maids, The
Middle, Desperate Housewives, Dexter and a regular role in the early 90s
on the first season of Step By Step playing opposite Palm Springs resident,
Suzanne Somers.
Some of Darbo’s silver screen credits include memorable roles in Del
Shore’s Daddy’s Dyin’ (Who’s Got The Will?), Speed 2 with Sandra Bullock,
Rango with Johnny Depp and two Clint Eastwood films, Midnight In
The Garden Of Good & Evil and In The Line Of Fire where John Malkovich
murders and deviously proclaims of her character, “You shouldn’t have
been from Minneapolis.”
The winner for Short Form Best Actress will be revealed at the Creative
Arts Emmy Awards on September 11 th and then announced during the
live television broadcast on September 18 th .
If luck is her lady on Emmy night, Darbo hopes to visit Palm Springs shortly
thereafter to share the statue with her desert pals. “If I’m fortunate enough
to win, I may just put a chain on it and wear it around my neck. Just in
case, I had better find some big gold earrings to match,” laughs Darbo.

Meet the All Star line-up for the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival
Over the past four years one of the most impressive aspects of the Palm
Springs Women’s Jazz Festival has been the gathering of the Jazz All-Star
musicians and artists performing throughout the weekend.
Over 20 of today’s jazz greats and rising-stars will gather for the Labor Day
Weekend, September 2 – 4, to perform at the Annenberg Theater, Indian
Canyons Golf Resort and Hard Rock Hotel.
Recently honored by the City of Los Angeles with a Living Jazz Legend
Award, Sweet Baby J’ai brings a wealth of experience and focus to her role
as the Festival’s Artistic Director. She is celebrated for her creative and
daring programming. SBJ’s penchant for paring the world’s most visible
jazz artists with top-notch female musicians from around the country
for a multi-day festival makes for many delightful surprises and musical
discoveries for audiences and performers alike.
Many of the all-stars have albums of their own as well an impressive
list of artists that they have performed with both live and in-studio.
Their lists includes John Legend, Eric Benet, Jackson Browne, Don Was,
Christopher Cross, Jim Keltner, Kenny Barron, Lizz Wright, Tia Fuller, Terri
Lyne Carrington, The Rippingtons, Nick Colionne, Chuck Loeb, Karen Briggs,
Four80East, David Sanborn, Bob James, Stanley Clarke, Michael Sembello,
Richard Perry, Chuck Berghofer, Tierney Sutton, Marilyn McCoo and Thelma

Sweet Baby J’ai: Vocals and musician. Few entertainers can command a
stage like the indefatigable Sweet Baby J’ai. A creative force on the music
scene for nearly three decades, she tours the world with her genre defying
work, which both embraces and expands jazz tradition. Her latest album is
Straight to the Place.
Sabine Pothier: Pianist-Composer. Widely respected as an award-winning
classical pianist in the United States and Europe, and also respected
greatly as a major jazz pianist from her work with Scotty Barnhart Quintet
(Barnhart is also Director of Count Basie Orchestra) atthe San Jose Jazz
Festival, Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines and other venues.
Sherry Luchette: Bass. She has performed with Downbeat Award-winning
Jazz Ensemble 1 Youngstown State for five years, the Youngstown
Symphony for three years, Ernie Andrews, David Sanborn, Louie Bellson,
David Baker, and Terry Gibbs. She has also played/studied with John
Clayton, Tamir Hendelman and Joe Harnell.
Tina Raymond: Drummer. She has played in jazz festivals around the
world, including Sweden’s Women in Jazz Festival and The Mary Lou
Williams Festival, and is known for pushing musical boundaries by
blending traditional jazz with African polyrhythms and classical percussion
techniques.
Pam Trotter: Vocalist. Trotter is known for her performances in musicals
such as Dream Girls and The Color Purple. She is also a songwriter/
producer for the late Teena Marie.
Sunnie Paxson: Keyboards. A musical prodigy in her hometown of
Philadelphia, she was selected as Los Angeles’ Best Jazz Performers in Los
Angeles Magazine and listed in Jazz Week as one of the Top 100 Artists for
radio spins. Albums include Groove Suite and Bohemian Sun.

Karen Hammack: Piano, singer/songwriter, jazz composer. As Musical
Director, Hammack has toured with Melissa Manchester and recorded
with a slew of jazz and rock heavy hitters. She’s also an educator who has
worked with trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez’s Jazz Adventure to introduce
jazz to a new generation across Southern California.

For those of you who have been reading LIVE Magazine for the
last 10 years you may remember a column called “Goody Bag”
back in the day. It was a regular column by Yours Truly about
what was happening in the community. My writing career ended
when my wife and I decided to put everything
in storage and travel the world for 5
years…..but that’s another story!
Since our return to Palm Springs I have
become involved as a volunteer with an
amazing non-profit start-up called Sanctuary
Palm Springs, a project founded by
filmmakers and lifelong LGBT activists,
LD Thompson and David Rothmiller.
Sanctuary Palm Springs will serve LGBT
youth, ages 18-21, transitioning out of
foster care. Designed as a LGBT family home with an emphasis
on education and the arts, SPS will provide psychological and
emotional support by caring and trained professionals. It will be a
place of safety and stability.
Because LGBT youth transitioning out of foster care are among
the most vulnerable, with a higher risk of homelessness, victimization,
addiction, mental health problems and suicide, this is a
passion for all of us involved. The Palm Springs LGBT community
is uniquely qualified to provide our residents with support based
on our own personal life experiences.
Nationwide, Sanctuary Palm Springs is one of the first facilities of
its kind to specifically target the LGBT youth transitioning out of foster
care, providing critical support as these young people prepare to
enter their adults lives. In order to qualify for placement at Sanctuary
Palm Springs, residents must be studying for their GED, enrolled in
college, a vocational training program or be working at least 80 hours
a month. The residents will learn the independent living skills necessary
to become self-sufficient adults. Through the SPS Matched
Mentor Program, they will have the opportunity of connecting with
successful adults in the Palm Springs LGBT and general community
to help them find their special gifts and their ideal career path.
You can support Sanctuary Palm Springs by becoming a Guardian
Angel for 2017. This sustained giving program helps us meet our ongoing
expenses. By committing to $100 a month for a year (or $1200
one time donation) you will help us create a reliable budget for growing

The Palm Springs Walk of Stars will honor noted Humanitarian,
Entertainer and Coachella Valley resident, Alfie Pettit, with the
397th Star Dedication Ceremony. The star dedication ceremony will
be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 10:00am at
Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge located at 849 North Palm
Canyon Drive. Eight4Nine is one of hippest restaurants in the Uptown
Design District. The public and media are invited to attend the
star dedication ceremony. The star is sponsored by Marlene Pettit.
From Vancouver, WA, Alfie Pettit arrived at age 21 in Los Angeles
and established the iconic “Alfie’s of Hollywood”. Dubbed “The
Paparazzi with a Pen” by the Los Angeles Times, Alfie’s impeccable
personality and style gained him introduction and industry
access to many film, television and pop stars, included among
Elizabeth Taylor, Drew Barrymore, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner
and Madonna – to name his favorites - and “Alfie’s of Hollywood”
became a trusted source for photographs, autographs, memorabilia
and anecdotes. Alfie was himself featured on nationally syndicated
television shows including Leeza Gibbons, American Journal, Hard
Copy, CNBC Money, as well as international TV appearances in
Italy and Japan.
Since first arriving in Palm Springs in 2006, Alfie Pettit has been a
force to be reckoned with in the realms of entertainment, philanthropy
and politics. A promotional power-house, Alfie brings notoriety
to all he touches, and can draw a crowd to any event, from
fundraiser to dinner party. Alfie was on the team that established
Palm Springs’ new hit show – Carnival Cabaret starring longtime
friend James “GYPSY” Haake. Firstly as a performer, then media
maven, personally garnering numerous hours of mainstream news
and commercial coverage. Now co-owner, Carnival Cabaret is playing
its 19th month of two to four shows per week, now making it the
longest running production in downtown Palm Springs, attracting an
upscale clientele ranging from tourists and locals to celebrities and
senior bus tours.
As pink Cadillac enthusiast and alter-ego Arial Trampway, Alfie has
raised money for countless charities, including Desert AIDS Project,
Angel View and most recently We Stand With Orlando. Alfie has
helped organize and participated in charitable events including “We
Are Orlando”, “Project Angel View”, “Sober in the Sun”, multiple donor
events, dinner fundraising parties including working directly with
board member Barbara Keller raising money benefitting the Desert
AIDS Project and much more. After meeting 2016’s Democratic
presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in Los Angeles in June, Alfie
was inspired to join the cause with “Drag OUT The Vote”; his burgeoning
local grassroots effort to get people of all stripe engaged
in the coming election. Alfie Pettit takes much pride in his efforts to
make Palm Springs a better and more colorful place for all.

Announces the Appointment of
Michael Miner
to the Position of Dorothy and Harold J. Meyerman
Director of Development
Palm Springs Art Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael
Miner as the Dorothy and Harold J. Meyerman Director of Development,
effective immediately. Miner served as Palm Springs Art Museum’s
Associate Director of Development for the past five years, and has been
the Acting Director of Development since December 2015. In this new
capacity Miner will provide leadership and management supporting the
museum’s strategic plan and advancing the fundraising efforts.
In his former role as Associate Director of Development for the museum,
Miner’s primary responsibility was managing Major and Planned Gifts,
Trustee Gifts, and the Annual Fund. He was instrumental in growing the
institution’s base of major gift support, overseeing Legacy Circle and
President’s Circle, the museum’s premier annual funding groups.
Prior to joining Palm Springs Art Museum, Miner was the Major Gifts and
Planned Giving Officer at Desert AIDS Project. He has been the Director
of Development at the New Center for Arts and Culture in Boston, and the
Executive Director at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, Massachusetts.
He has been an adjunct faculty member at Macalester College,
the University of Saint Thomas, the College of St. Catherine, and
the University of Wisconsin. He served as a theater program evaluator
for the NEA; has worked as an actor and director; and has been involved
with numerous fundraising and philanthropic associations.
Miner received his undergraduate degree from Lycoming College, his
MFA from Wayne State University, and he completed additional coursework
in organizational development at the Union Institute in Cincinnati.
He and his realtor husband, Chip Marler, are art lovers, ardent museum
supporters, and part of the founders group of Palm Springs Art Museum
Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion.
“Mr. Miner’s three decades of experience in fundraising, non-profit management,
and business consulting make him an ideal candidate to fulfill

Installing Solar in 2016 Instead of 2017 Will Save You Money
SCE is Changing Net Metering in 2017 and That Will Cost You Money
Since the full 30% Federal Tax Credit is extended through 2019,
there’s no hurry to install solar right? Nope. Unfortunately, waiting
could cost you plenty. Along with the savings you would miss from
continuing to pay SCE’s high rates, SCE is also getting ready to
change their net metering program, which will happen in 2017 as soon
as they hit their “cap”, when a set percentage of energy generated by
solar is reached. That will trigger what’s being called NEM 2.0. Right
now, when you produce excess energy that your home doesn’t use
right away, it gets “registered” and sent to the grid for “storage” in the
form of credits. Then when you need energy, like at night when your
solar isn’t producing, this energy is pulled back off the grid and you
receive full value for it. In other words, no money changes hands and
you are credited at the full retail value.
Once NEM 2.0 begins at some point in early 2017, not only will SCE
switch new solar customers to mandatory Time-of-Use (TOU) billing,
which means electricity will be its most expensive until 8pm at
night, they will no longer credit you full value for the extra energy you
produce and push onto the grid for later use. Although it won’t be a
dramatic decrease, it will mean lost savings over the life of your solar
system.

August is Young Professionals Network Month of Giving
Charity Bowling Event to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City
Young Professionals Network (YPN) of The Palm Springs Regional Association of
REALTORS® (PSRAR) will hold an event on Tuesday, August 23 rd from 6:00 pm
to 9:00 pm at The Palm Springs Lanes Bowling Alley. Attendees are encouraged
to donate school supplies.
The Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City, one of three independent
organizations in the Coachella Valley, will be the benefactors of the evening’s
fundraising efforts. All chapters fall under the umbrella of the National
organization and are responsible for funding their own. The Club’s mission is
to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged
circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and
caring citizens.
This is the second year of participation for the local network in conjunction
with the California Association of REALTORS® YPN Month of Giving. YPN helps
young real estate professionals excel in their careers by giving them the tools
and encouragement to become involved in the four core area of REALTOR®
Associations, real estate industry, peers and community. “The Palm Springs
Regional Association of REALTORS® is pleased once again to help the Boys
& Girls Club of Cathedral City. We expect a very successful event”, said
2016 PSRAR President Jim Webb.

Tommy Tune is one of the country’s most prolific
performer/director/choreographers and is celebrating
his golden decade on the great American
stage. He has received 10 Tony Awards, which
includes the 2015 Tony for Life Achievement in
the Theatre, The National Medal of Arts, 8 Drama
Desk Awards, 3 Astaire Awards, and multiple Life
Time Achievement Awards including the Society of
Directors and the Choreographers’ George Abbott
Award.
A native Texan, Mr. Tune began his career as a
dancer in the Broadway shows Baker Street, A
Joyful Noise and How Now Dow Jones. He has
received Tony Awards for The Will Rogers Follies
(Direction and Choreography), Grand Hotel
(Direction and Choreography), My One and Only
(Actor in a Musical and Choreography) Nine (Direction),
A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine
(Choreography) and Seesaw (Featured Actor in
a Musical). Tune received two Tony nominations
(Direction and Choreography) for The Best Little
Whorehouse In Texas.

rave reviews for his tap dancing and singing role in
the Encores! production of Lady, Be Good! at New
York City Center. He is currently touring the country
in his one-man show, Taps, Tunes and Tall Tales.

TEAMWORK: Nareg Guregian and Anders Weiss
Nareg Guregian and Anders Weiss have earned the opportunity to compete
in their first Olympic Games by winning the men’s pair at rowing’s
U.S. Olympic Trials II on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.
The duo punched its ticket to Rio by winning the final Wednesday morning
with a time of 6:21.10, 1.83 seconds ahead of the second-place boat
of 2012 Olympian Tom Peszek and Yohann Rigogne.
A native of North Hills, California, Guregian, 27, is a seven-time member
of the national team, including once at the junior level and twice at
U-23. Last year he was part of the bronze-medal-winning men’s eight at
the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. He has enjoyed success in the
eight, helping power the bronze-medal finish at the 2013 worlds and a
gold at the second world cup stop in 2014. He holds a degree in media
studies and mass communications from the University of California,
where he earned Pac 10 Rowing Athlete of the Year honors as a senior.
Guregian is engaged to Katelin Snyder, who earlier this week was
named to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Rowing Team as the coxswain in the
women’s eight.
Weiss, 23, was a member of the U-23 national team in 2013 and helped
power the eight to the U23 world silver medal. Born and raised in Barrington,
Rhode Island, where he currently resides, Weiss received an
economics degree from Brown University last year. He discovered rowing
when he sister joined the Brown team as a walk-on and fell in love
with the sport immediately. Prior to earning a spot on the Olympic team,
he called scoring a hat trick for his recreational soccer team his biggest
sports accomplishment.
Guregian and Weiss complete the 41-member 2016 U.S. Olympic Rowing
Team, which will compete in 11 of the 14 Olympic boats when competition
commences Aug. 6 on Rodrigo de Freitas Lake. Twelve members
of the Olympic team competed at previous Olympic Games, including six
Olympic medalists.

Simone Biles holds the record for most
ever won by a female gymnast.

Simone Biles was too young to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, but has
dominated the sport of gymnastics since her senior debut in 2013. Her
medal haul includes 14 total world championship medals, including allaround
golds in 2013, 2014 and 2015. With 10 world championship gold
medals, Biles holds the record for most ever won by a female gymnast.
She’s also won four consecutive all-around titles at the P&G Championships.
After winning the national title in 2014 by 4.25 points, a huge
margin when medals are often decided by tenths of a point, legendary
gymnast and 1984 Olympic all-around champion Mary Lou Retton said,
“She may be the most talented gymnast I’ve ever seen in my life, honestly.
And I don’t even think she’s tapped into what she really can do. I
think she’s unbeatable.” Her record agrees: the 19-year-old has not lost
an all-around competition the all-around since August 2013, thanks to her
combination of a great degree of difficulty and near-flawless execution.

show, “Love Life” to the Arthur Newman Theatre in Palm Desert on
Sunday, August 21, 2016 at 2 PM. Joel Baker joins him on the baby
grand piano for this 17th show of the Sundays In Summer Cabaret
Series presented by Les Michaels. Tickets are $11 cash only and

Brad Seiple has always loved to sing since his involvement in
choir and musical theater as a child but left performing for nearly
two decades. He rekindled his passion for singing by appearing at
local open mics and karaoke venues. That was six years ago and
since then he has developed quite a following of local fans. Part of
Brad’s appeal is his boy next door look, combined with his song
choices and ability to explore the meaning of a song and translate
that to his audience through his expressions and phrasing of the
lyrics. “Love Life” is Brad’s debut show and will explore the many
emotions love elicits, using an eclectic mix of songs from artists
such as Elton John, Michael Buble, Adele, and Cole Porter. On the
more personal side, Brad was born and mostly raised in Oceanside,
CA, and attended Fresno State College where he earned both a
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, and Master’s Degree in Education.
He relocated to the Coachella Valley in 2008 and is an area high
school administrator.

The Old Globe today announced the cast and creative team of the West
Coast premiere of October Sky, which will blast off the Globe’s 2016–
2017 Season with a tale of boys, rockets, and big dreams. Inspired by
the beloved 1999 Universal Pictures film and Rocket Boys by Homer H.
Hickam, Jr., October Sky features a book by Drama Desk nominee Brian
Hill (Broadway’s The Story of My Life) and Aaron Thielen (Hero) and a
score by Michael Mahler (Diary of a Wimpy Kid). October Sky is directed
and choreographed by Joseph Jefferson Award winner Rachel Rockwell
(Brigadoon, American premiere of Ride the Cyclone)and produced in association
with Universal Stage Productions (Wicked, Billy Elliot: The Musical,
Bring It On: The Musical).
Starring as Homer Hickam is Kyle Selig, a rising star in the theatre world
who recently took on the role of Elder Price in the smash Broadway musical
