In the wake of the terrorist attacks of<br />
9/11, the New York Times ran short individual<br />
biographies of all the people that<br />
died in the World Trade Center. Every<br />
story was a snapshot of a life, focusing<br />
on the person’s dreams, jobs and hobbies.<br />
Filled with quotidian detail, each<br />
landed with a strong blow to the heart.<br />
They served as small totems of our<br />
shared humanity as well as devastating<br />
reminders of just how fragile a life can<br />
be.<br />
I thought about the impact of those<br />
bios as I listened to BJ Barham’s deeply<br />
moving Rockingham. The singer-songwriter<br />
wrote his debut solo album in the<br />
days immediately following another tragic<br />
event. Last November, Barham was<br />
on tour in Europe with his alt-country<br />
band American Aquarium. Two hours<br />
away, coordinated terrorist attacks took<br />
the lives of 130 people in Paris.<br />
