Mark XII interrogations and replies are pulses of radio waves at 1.03 and 1.09 GHz. Inf<strong>or</strong>mation is conveyed<br />
by changes in the number and timing of the pulses. The interrogation f<strong>or</strong> military Modes 1,2, and 3 and civilian<br />
Modes A, B, C, and D are a pair of pulses separated by a time delay, the length of which is specified by the particular<br />
mode. This f<strong>or</strong>mat is illustrated in figure A.<br />
