Where is her swing?
To the editor
Today, Wednesday, Aug. 17, my daughter,
great-grandson and I spent the morning
at the Wildwood Community Park off Hwy.
100. My great grandson is 2 years old and
the other children playing at the park were
anywhere from 2 to 4 years old. All were
having a great time running, jumping, sliding
and climbing the myriad of playground
equipment.
Around mid-morning a young lady in
a wheel chair pushed by her caretaker,
arrived at the park and approached the
swing area. She was very excited! As they
got closer to the area where I was swinging
my great-grandson, I heard the caretaker
tell the young woman that “her swing” was
no longer there. The young lady was visibly
upset. I was heartbroken for her and
her caretaker.
After attempts to fit into the types of
swings available on the playground, she
and her caretaker left the park.
We all have challenges in our lives, and
on this day for this young lady, it was to be
like all the others on the playground – to be
able to swing.

Eatherton Road
To the Editor:
Steve Cook was correct with his statements
about the absurd amount of time that
S. Eatherton Road was closed to do what
was billed as major improvements in the
road for unsafe conditions [“Letters to the
Editor,” West Newsmagazine, Aug. 17].
We, and many others, had to drive miles
out of our way for many months because
this was such a big deal. Finally, after all
that time, wasted fuel and late appointments,
the result is that it should have been
accomplished in a week. How embarrassing!
Was there no consideration for the
people in our community who were inconvenienced
for so long, for no reason?
Who was responsible for this, and whoever
they are, should lose their job.
And at the end of it all, we still drive over
the same old railroad tracks that were not
removed and the road that was smoothed
over there.
What a black eye for the folks that we
pay to take care of our roads.
It’s embarrassing!

Responding to “Perils of
the two-party system”
To the Editor:
A response to David Holmes and “the
perils of the two party system,” [West
Newsmagazine, Aug. 17] is in order to correct
a few misconceptions of our republic
and Mr. Holmes forgetting about the great
father of the Constitution, James Madison.
Madison understood the nature of man
[that means you ladies also] and individual
interests, which are usually economic, that
guide political arguments. These arguments,
stated by Mr. Holmes, are “Two
sides constantly fighting for control of
the government.” [Check] “This constant
power struggle has impeded progress for
generations.” [His interest, not mine.]
These arguments are exactly why Madison
placed “checks and balances” into
the Constitution. Or let’s say it in another
way: Americans yell and scream, talk and
argue, gum up the works, slow issues to
crawl, yell and scream more, shout that
your economic interest has priority over
mine or vice-versa … and then we vote …
[check, check, check, check] … and then
a possible compromise. I’ll prove it with
some recent slogans: “Change you can
believe in,” but the question what is the
change and into what? Redistribution of
wealth, e.g. Marxian economic theory or
the collective interest [Bernie Sanders], or
Hillary’s “We’re stronger together” motto,
or “Make America great again,” or e.g.
capitalism and individualism?
America was founded upon Adam
Smith’s ideas of economic liberalism and
his view of freeing up ideas and individuals
to create wealth – prosperity that can
pursue self-interest.
Madison argued against the multiple
parties that Mr. Holmes wrote about.
“Democracy is the most vile form of government,”
Madison wrote. “... democracies
have ever been spectacles of turbulence
and contention; have ever been found
incompatible with personal security or
the rights of property: and have in general
been as short in their lives as the have been
violent in their deaths.”
After all, Madison was a Democratic-
Republican [Jefferson]; Adams and Washington
were Federalists, priceless.
America is not Europe or the any other
place on the planet that have multiple parties,
America is indeed exceptional.
