JCC of Syracuse | 2016 Fall Program Guide 3

315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
Our Jewish Community Center
Celebrating our accomplishments and moving forward
As I sit to write this end-of-year article I
just received the financials for our 2015-
2016 fiscal year. Wow, what a wonderful
year it has been for our agency. We had
fundraisers that came in better than
budget, departments that saw record
enrollments, struggles that
were conquered and goals that
were met. And yet once again
I have butterflies over what
this new fiscal year will bring.
After 15 years of serving as
your executive director you
would think that the anxiety
of what this year will bring us
would no longer be as scary.
I have found that I meet the
challenges of “what’s next”
better with this nervous energy.
July was the beginning of our current
fiscal year and what an exciting beginning
we’ve had. Record number of enrollments
in our summer camps, increases in
membership, more senior meals served
than ever before and a campus that has
never been so busy. So, does this define
success?
Well, let’s take a moment to look at
the flip side of life here at the JCC: the
struggles. The second week of August we
Marci Erlebacher
JCC Executive Director
started our asbestos abatement project.
Although the dormant asbestos in our
64-year old building’s crawl space posed
no health risks to building occupants, the
time had come to proactively abate this
space. We estimate that this project will be
completed by the time school
starts.
In late August we began
our Sports & Fitness Center
renovations. Our Fitness
Center opened in 2001 and
most of the equipment was
15-years old. Although it had
served us well, the time had
come to replace it with today’s
state-of-the-art equipment.
Not all of our equipment will
be replaced, however. Some of the better
machines will be refurbished. We’re also
installing new flooring and giving the
place a deep cleaning to make everything
look brand spanking new again.
So that’s my quick rundown of our
agency’s fiscal and physical issues. But
how are we doing when it comes to serving
our community? Do we serve a purpose
for the community and are we fulfilling
our mission? Currently, our strengths
are found in our children’s programs
and our senior adult services. We know
that we must build upon these while also
strengthening some of our other programs.
Our adult programming and teen
services need to be strengthened and
expanded. Last year we closed our teen
center “The SPOT” in ShoppingTown Mall
and brought our teen programming back
to the JCC. While we now offer fewer teen
programs, we did have one of the biggest
and most successful high school Battle of
the Bands events in our gym last January.
Our teen summer travel camp SyraCrusin’
saw a record number of campers this year,
serving almost 20 teens every week that
this program was held.
So, yes, while we still have some more
work to do in some areas, we are able to
celebrate our accomplishments as we move
forward and look to build upon them.
From where I sit, I see more cohesiveness
throughout the community than ever
before. More collaborations are being
formed and bridges being built. It is with
these collaborations that we all will realize
a positive force is being created by the
bonds which are formed throughout our
community.
Marci Erlebacher
See what the JCC has in store for you
As you read this message there are so
many exciting things happening at your JCC.
The “best kept secret” on the east side of
Syracuse is getting even better!
Your Sports & Fitness Center is
undergoing a major renovation
which includes new equipment,
new flooring, fresh paint and a
fresh attitude! The group exercise
classes are active, personal training
is thriving and membership is
strong. My wife Robin and I train
with personal trainer John Hawley
every Wednesday morning, and every Friday
morning we participate in Peg Schick’s
Muscle Sculpting group circuit class. If you’ve
never taken a class at your JCC why not ask
yourself, “Why not?” Try it... you just might
like it! If you haven’t met our new Sports &
Fitness Director Pat Scott, please stop by and
say hello. He is a wealth of information as well
as attentive and caring while advising on your
fitness path.
Enrollment in our Early Childhood
Development Program is very
strong, especially for infants. For
older school-age children, our After
School Program and vacation camps
continue to grow. With these two
programs, the laughing of children
is the most wonderful sound in the
world. It is a sound that echoes
through our building.
Every day the JCC’s Chef Donna Carullo
prepares delicious, healthy meals onsite for
local seniors. The socialization, schmoozing
and culinary delights are a staple of so many
of our seniors’ daily schedules. Director Cindy
Stein is our incredibly enthusiastic cheerleader
for Adult and Senior Programming as she
schedules and arranges great entertainment
and activities for everyone to enjoy.
Nothing would come together as well as it
does without the dedicated guidance and
direction of a qualified executive director.
Marci Erlebacher continues to give 150
percent to your JCC. Her mission is to make
every member feel welcome and a part of
the family —from the Mah Jongg table to the
lunch table, to the Fitness Center, to the
swimming pool, to the classrooms and on.
Thank you, Marci.
So don’t be a stranger! Come and see what
your JCC has in store for you!
Supporting Your Center
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
Your continued financial contributions, gifts, grants and endowments allow
us to serve you, your family and the larger community six days per week, year
round. Funds raised are critical to daily operations, special programming,
future development and improvements, and scholarships and financial aid.
End-of-year donation
Public support is imperative to the JCC of
Syracuse’s survival. The center depends on
these donations for a full 7% of its annual
budget. Information about making a taxdeductible,
end-of-year contribution will
be sent out in late fall.
Matching gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
matching gift programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor
the memory of a loved one, the JCC
welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of
our many endowment or special funds.
(See the tributes on page 33.) The JCC
will send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 22) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
For more information, contact
Erin Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC Gala draws large crowd for special award presentations
A full house of supporters came out to
celebrate with the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center of Syracuse for its
153rd Annual Meeting & Gala held on
Sunday, June 5, at Owera Vineyards in
Cazenovia. Over 200 people were on hand
as the JCC presented “The Leslie” Award
for the very first time along with four other
awards honoring a select group of local
men and women for their outstanding
service in support of the JCC and the
community.
“The Leslie,” which honors the spirit
of the late Leslie London Neulander,
was created to recognize outstanding
commitment and service to the JCC
and to the local community. These were
the qualities that London Neulander
personified throughout her many selfless
volunteer pursuits.
The inaugural “Leslie” Award was
presented to Sara Temes, JCC board
member and treasurer. A graduate of
Wellesley College and the University of
Pennsylvania Law School, Temes is a
One of our most successful summer camps concludes
The JCC of Syracuse recently wrapped up
perhaps its most successful Camp Rishon
summer day camp. Hundreds of campers
ranging in age from infants to school-age
children to teens attended a total of 2,500
camper weeks during the eight weeks of
camp which ran June 27 – Aug. 19.
“Camp Rishon was a huge success
this year,” said Mick Hagan, director of
Children and Teen Services. “The children
were great and were filled with loads of
enthusiasm and adventure. We couldn’t
have done it without our excellent camp
counselors, many of whom have been
with us for the past few summers. It’s
very satisfying to be able to make the kids
happy and give them an experience they
won’t soon forget.”
From arts and crafts, swimming and
sports to field trips and more, there was
more than enough fun and excitement
to go around for campers in the JCC’s
Nitzanim, or traditional, school-age
day camp. Meanwhile many school-age
children who opted to focus on a specific
area of interest had a blast in a JCC
specialty camp such as soccer, gymnastics,
dance, horseback riding, fishing and more.
Once again this year young teens
entering grades 7–10 in the JCC’s
SyraCruisin’ Teen Travel Camp got to
take in a variety of adventurous local and
regional road trips as well as direct their
energy volunteering with various local
organizations.
“There’s nothing like summer camp at
the JCC because it’s all about the children,”
said Hagan. “We go the extra mile to
make each camp a fun, safe and wonderful
experience. In doing so, we help to create
great memories that will last a lifetime.”
As a child I have vivid memories of playing a
game and someone calling out, “Do over!!”
If memory serves, do over meant another
turn or chance in that particular game even
though it was not warranted by the rules.
Imagine if in our lives we had a do over
or system restore button where we could
erase an action we felt to be wrong or
inappropriate. In reality, we do have a reset
button; it is known as Yom Kippur. On this
day we have the opportunity to literally
erase or wipe away our incorrect deeds of
the past year! On Microsoft’s website I found
the following: If a system problem develops
as a result of a system change, the user can
return the system to a previous state using
the data from a restore point.
Amazingly, this is exactly what Yom Kippur
is all about. At the same time it demands
action on our part. We are all aware of the
famous Haftorah read on this day about the
prophet Jonah’s attempt to flee from God. It
is only when he realizes running away from
his obligation will solve little if anything that
he hits system restore button. He begins his
journey back to the starting point.
There is a great deal to glean from Jonah,
especially when interacting with our children.
If we expect Yom Kippur to be a day to start
afresh, why not offer the same chance to our
children when they make errors? In this way
our children will be given the opportunity to
learn from their mistakes.
Please God, when we hear the beautiful
voice of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah, let
it become a wake up call for us. This year
let us not hit the snooze button, rather hit
system restore! To one and all, my wishes
to you for a happy a healthy New Year and
may we all be inscribed and sealed for health,
peace and happiness!
involvement with the JCC for many years
includes chairing and co-chairing the
JCC Dinner Dance Gala multiple times.
She has also chaired the JCC Annual
Meeting and participated on the Super
Bowl raffle committee the past five years.
Maloff is an active volunteer with several
local organizations including the Syracuse
Hebrew Day School, which honored her
with the Woman of Valor Award in 2000
and the Volunteer Award of the Year in
2002.
Helen Marcum and the late Phil Stein
were honored with the Hall of Fame
Award, which recognizes and celebrates
individuals who have dedicated themselves
to the Syracuse Jewish community and to
the advancement of the JCC.
Helen Marcum is a former JCC of
Syracuse board member and she was the
center’s second female board president.
Her dedication to volunteering started at
an early age and she has generously given
her time and talents to many nonprofit
organizations. Marcum is currently a
board member and finance chair of the
New York State Federation of Women’s
Clubs, board member and treasurer of the
Syracuse Federation of Women’s Clubs
and member of the Jewish Observer
advisory committee. Her honors include
receiving the Esther and Joseph Roth
Award for Outstanding Jewish Community
and a partner with D’Arcangelo & Co.
certified public accountants. Stein was
well respected in his field and is very
much missed by clients and co-workers.
He served as treasurer of LaFayette Golf
and Country Club, Temple Concord,
Menorah Park, Metropolitan School for
the Arts and the Syracuse International
Film Festival. He was a member of the
NYS Attorney Grievance Committee and
the Cavalry Club, and a past president of
LaFayette Golf and Country Club. Stein,
a congregant of Temple Concord, also
was an active community volunteer with
Junior Achievement and Canine Working
Companions.
The JCC of Syracuse’s Annual Meeting
& Gala is the center’s largest and most
important annual fundraiser. This year’s
event proceeds, as in the past, will provide
significant funding for scholarships to
individuals in the JCC’s early childhood,
after school, summer camp and senior
programs.
How to Register
Registration for the 2016-2017 school year
has been ongoing, and space is typically
very limited. Each new school year requires
registration. When a class is filled, based on
New York State licensing requirements, a
wait list is developed. Once the school year
begins, children are admitted from the wait
list on a space-available basis.
There is a $25 reservation fee to be placed
on one of our wait lists. This does not
guarantee placement in a classroom. We will
notify you if a placement becomes available,
and you will have 48 hours to accept the
placement.
Withdrawals, changes
Enrollment in ECDP is a commitment to
our 10-month school year which consists
of three sessions: September–November,
December–February and March–June. Any
program withdrawals or enrollment changes
must be made 30 days before the start of a
session.
For more information, please call us at
Infant Level
We offer the highest quality of care to our
youngest members in the Syracuse area. To
maintain a developmentally appropriate
environment for our infants, they are
separated into two age groups: Infant I
and Infant II. Infants who are 6 weeks to
12 months old at time of enrollment are
placed in the Infant I classroom. Infants
who are 12 months to 24 months at the
time of enrollment are placed in the
Infant II classroom.
The ECDP provides a responsive
environment that supports and encourages
exploration through a variety of classroom
routines and experiences. Infant caregivers
focus on daily routines such as hellos and
goodbyes, diapering and toileting, feeding,
dressing and soothing to sleep as part of
the curriculum. These one-on-one routines
help to build positive relationships between
infant and caregiver, promoting trust and
allowing infants to feel secure in their
environment.
Once infants have developed a
trusting relationship with their caregivers
they will start to gain new skills and
participate more actively in daily routines.
The teachers are then able to provide
intentional indoor and outdoor experiences
that allow children to learn while imitating
and pretending, connecting with music
and movement, exploring with sand and
water and creating with art.
Toddler Level
• Must be 18-months old by September 6, 2016
Toddler children are at an age when they
establish secure attachments with their
caregivers more quickly and are now eager
to experience their world. They react to
what they experience through their senses
and physical activity. ECDP teachers
provide intentional experiences for
toddlers through a variety of indoor and
outdoor experiences.
Learning materials that match the
children’s growing abilities and interests
are provided and the children start to
explore objects and begin to use them
purposefully. While playing with toys,
imitating and pretending, exploring
sand and water, creating with art and
going outdoors, the toddlers learn to
communicate and socialize with peers and
adults, to think mathematically and to
discover like scientists.
Toddlers start to enjoy special
programming outside of the classroom
setting, such as Toddler Tango and gym
class. Toddlers are placed into classrooms
according to their chronological age.
Children do not need to be toilet trained,
and when appropriate, toilet training will
be incorporated into one of the goals for
your child.
Three-Year Old Level
• Must be age 3 by December 1, 2016
With kindergarten just two years away,
this is an important time for every child
to learn that the world is bigger than
imagined. Children learn new skills
and concepts through our thematic,
hands-on approach to learning. Daily
activities are carefully planned to promote
children’s social, emotional and cognitive
development. Our teachers are trained to
recognize differences in rates
of development within this
age group, and individualize
instruction to meet every
child’s needs. Materials and
activities are appropriately
tailored in an effort to
challenge children’s abilities
while building their selfconfidence.
Throughout the year, children will
discover the wonder of the world they live
in. All of our three-year olds are actively
engaged in group discussions, long-term
studies, sensory play, cooking, process art
and more. Our three-year olds are reading
stories, singing songs and playing their way
through the day. We also tailor gym time
with our specialized gym instructor to
the needs of our three-year olds. We play
outside every day, weather permitting, on
our beautiful fenced-in playgrounds.
With all of these wonderful
activities happening in our three-year
old classrooms, the Early Childhood
Development Program provides a well
rounded and positive learning experience
for your child.
Pre-K Level
• Must be age 4 by December 1, 2016
Our oldest children explore the world
through our hands-on, developmentally
appropriate approach to learning. We
include both child initiated play and
teacher-directed academic experiences on
a daily basis. Planned lessons
and activities allow teachers
to informally and continually
assess each child in order
to effectively modify and
individualize instruction.
Academically, we focus
on exposing children to the
skills and concepts needed
to succeed in kindergarten.
This includes creative expression, math
and reading readiness, along with fine
and gross motor skill development to help
each child learn, grow and succeed. Each
classroom is also equipped with a SMART
board where the children are engaged in
daily interactive lessons which promote
creativity and critical thinking.
Children at the Pre-K level attend field
trips which coincide with what they are
learning. In the fall our classes will visit
the apple and pumpkin farms. Later in
the school year we’ll visit the MOST, F-M
Planetarium and Fayetteville Free Library.
Fall driver safety courses
at the JCC
We can all use a refresher every now and
then when it comes to safely navigating the
roadways. If you’d like to further hone your
driving skills—as well as save some money
on your auto insurance and knock some
points off your driving record—check out
these upcoming driver safety courses that
the JCC will be hosting.
National Safety Council
Defensive Driving Course
• Sunday, Sept. 18
• 9:30 am – 4 pm
The class is $25 per person ($20 for JCC
of Syracuse members) and open to licensed
drivers of all ages. Attendees must bring
their drivers license and are welcome to
bring a dairy (non-meat) lunch.
This National Safety Council course focuses
on practical defensive driving knowledge
and techniques to help participants avoid
collisions and traffic violations. The highly
interactive class will include learning
activities, discussions and videos with reallife
driver simulations.
AARP Driver Safety Course
• Tuesday, Nov. 15 and
Wednesday, Nov. 16
• 9 am – noon
The class is $25 per person ($20 for AARP
members) and open to licensed drivers of
all ages, although it is geared toward older
drivers. Attendees must come both days and
bring their drivers license.
The AARP Driver Safety course teaches
current rules of the road, defensive driving
techniques and how to operate your
vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly
challenging driving environment. Attendees
will also learn how to manage and
accommodate common age-related changes
in vision, hearing and reaction time. AARP
membership is not required to take the
course and there are no tests to pass.
Upon completing either the National Safety
Council or AARP course, participants are
eligible for a discount on their auto insurance
and up to a four point reduction for recent
infractions.
To register for these classes, call the JCC of
Syracuse at 315-445-2360 or stop by the JCC
front desk.
Connect. Learn. Have fun.
Birthday celebrations
Each month we hold a birthday celebration
for all the senior birthdays in that month.
The dates are posted in the newsletter.
Come help us celebrate!
Bridge
We welcome new bridge players of all ages
and levels on Mondays from 1–3:30 p.m.
Join us for lunch and then hit the tables!
A new table will open up when we have
enough extra players signed up. Please stop
by the front desk to get on the list.
Driver safety courses
Would you like to lower your auto
insurance costs and reduce points on
your license? We regularly host AARP
Driver Safety and National Safety Council
Defensive Driving courses here at the
JCC one or more times each year. See this
fall’s upcoming classes at left. For classes
coming up a little further out in the future,
MIND AND BODY
Barre
A combination of ballet techniques with Pilates
movements and principles offers an energizing
workout that strengthens, stretches and tones the
body.
NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action)
NIA is a blend of concepts, cultures, theories and
movement from the east and west. It is a barefoot
technique offering a fusion of movement styles.
Experience the expressiveness of dance, the power of
martial arts and the wisdom of the healing arts.
Pilates
Based on the principles of Joseph Pilates, this class’
multiple levels of participation uses bands, magic
circles, stability balls and BOSUs. Mostly done on a
mat, but some standing work is incorporated as well.
ALL FITNESS LEVELS
20/20/20
For those looking for some variety... 20 minutes of
cardio, 20 minutes of muscle sculpting and 20 minutes
of stretching. Wow!
Balance & Bone Density
This integrated balance training and bone density
building class is designed to address fall reduction
and prevention as well as build bone density and
postural stability.
Cardio Conditioning
This high-energy class offers all the benefits of a
muscle sculpting class combined with different cardio
techniques such as steps, BOSU ball and glides.
Format will differ from class to class to offer the best
fat- and calorie-burning workout in town.
Group Cycle
Designed by an Olympic mountain-biking coach,
the Keiser M3 Plus bike brings the mountain-biking
experience indoors to safely deliver a full-body
workout. Unlike other cycling classes which just work
the legs, this cutting-edge cycling class works the
whole body.
Line Dancing
Get moving with line dancing—a fun way to exercise!
Line dance to all varieties of music using a series of
basic steps and patterns of all dance styles. Challenge
yourself as the dances change direction and move
around the room. Class is designed for beginners,
those who want moderate exercise, and also for those
who want a more intense workout.
Tai Chi for Arthritis
Tai Chi is an ancient practice proven to improve
mental and physical well being. Tai Chi for Arthritis
uses gentle Sun-style Tai Chi movements to help
reduce stress, improve breathing and develop
balance, mobility and body awareness. All ability
levels are welcome and you don’t need to be
diagnosed with arthritis to participate.
Yoga
A hybrid style drawing from Vinyasa, Lyengar and
Viniyoga that brings physical benefits by integrating
body and mind performance. Bring a towel, water and
we recommend that you bring your own Yoga mat.
Yogalates
This class is a fusion of Yoga and Pilates. See each
description above for further details.
Muscle Sculpting
Instructors use barbells, free weights, bands and balls
to create the ultimate total body shaping class.
Step & Sculpt
A dynamic blend of step and cardiovascular activities
along with intervals of strength movements help
increase muscle tone and the body’s metabolism. An
overall power packed workout!
TRX Suspension Training
Free; $15 for non-Fitness members
TRX (Total Body Resistance Exercise) utilizes a band
(two-handled nylon strap) to harness the power of
gravity and movement for body weight exercises. The
result is a mix of support and mobility to train strength,
endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance, power
and core stability across a wide range of resistance.
TRX for Golf
Fee: $15 for Fitness members, $25 non-members
TRX (total body resistance exercise) training
specifically designed to help golfers with off-season
conditioning.
Zumba
A fusion of Latin and international music provides
the backdrop for a blood pumping, effective
cardiovascular workout for all ages. A variety of fast
and slow rhythms help tone and sculpt the body while
you learn easy-to-follow dance steps. Zumba Gold is
the low-impact version for all levels.
BASIC
Chair & Balance Class
Exercises designed for a chair for those individuals who
have difficulty getting down to the floor for mat work.
Also some standing work for balance training.
chair offers a total body workout while sitting. It is easy
to use and helps increase flexibility, balance, endurance
very limited mobility to those who can get around and
