is the corresponding secretary of the<br />

Women of Temple Adath, the “flower lady”<br />

solely responsible for securing donors for<br />

the flowers that grace the Bima at Temple<br />

Adath every Shabbat and holidays, and<br />

she has been an award winning Weight<br />

Watchers leader for over 32 years.<br />

The Kovod Award, which signifies<br />

honor and importance, was presented to<br />

Joanne Maloff. Her exemplary service and<br />

involvement with the JCC for many years<br />

includes chairing and co-chairing the<br />

JCC Dinner Dance Gala multiple times.<br />

She has also chaired the JCC Annual<br />

Meeting and participated on the Super<br />

Bowl raffle committee the past five years.<br />

Maloff is an active volunteer with several<br />

local organizations including the Syracuse<br />

Hebrew Day School, which honored her<br />

with the Woman of Valor Award in 2000<br />

and the Volunteer Award of the Year in<br />

2002.<br />

Helen Marcum and the late Phil Stein<br />

were honored with the Hall of Fame<br />

Award, which recognizes and celebrates<br />

individuals who have dedicated themselves<br />

to the Syracuse Jewish community and to<br />

the advancement of the JCC.<br />

Helen Marcum is a former JCC of<br />

Syracuse board member and she was the<br />

center’s second female board president.<br />

Her dedication to volunteering started at<br />

an early age and she has generously given<br />

her time and talents to many nonprofit<br />

organizations. Marcum is currently a<br />

board member and finance chair of the<br />

New York State Federation of Women’s<br />

Clubs, board member and treasurer of the<br />

Syracuse Federation of Women’s Clubs<br />

and member of the Jewish Observer<br />

advisory committee. Her honors include<br />

receiving the Esther and Joseph Roth<br />

Award for Outstanding Jewish Community<br />

Leadership from the Jewish Federation of<br />

Central New York, The Post-Standard’s<br />

Woman of Achievement Award in<br />

Volunteerism and the Hannah G. Solomon<br />

Award from the National Council of Jewish<br />

Women (NCJW).<br />

Phil Stein, CPA, passed away in May,<br />

2015. He was the JCC’s long-time auditor<br />

and a partner with D’Arcangelo & Co.<br />

certified public accountants. Stein was<br />

well respected in his field and is very<br />

much missed by clients and co-workers.<br />

He served as treasurer of LaFayette Golf<br />

and Country Club, Temple Concord,<br />

Menorah Park, Metropolitan School for<br />

the Arts and the Syracuse International<br />

Film Festival. He was a member of the<br />

NYS Attorney Grievance Committee and<br />

the Cavalry Club, and a past president of<br />

LaFayette Golf and Country Club. Stein,<br />

a congregant of Temple Concord, also<br />

was an active community volunteer with<br />

Junior Achievement and Canine Working<br />

Companions.<br />

The JCC of Syracuse’s Annual Meeting<br />

& Gala is the center’s largest and most<br />

important annual fundraiser. This year’s<br />

event proceeds, as in the past, will provide<br />

significant funding for scholarships to<br />

individuals in the JCC’s early childhood,<br />

after school, summer camp and senior<br />

programs.<br />
