is the corresponding secretary of the
Women of Temple Adath, the “flower lady”
solely responsible for securing donors for
the flowers that grace the Bima at Temple
Adath every Shabbat and holidays, and
she has been an award winning Weight
Watchers leader for over 32 years.
The Kovod Award, which signifies
honor and importance, was presented to
Joanne Maloff. Her exemplary service and
involvement with the JCC for many years
includes chairing and co-chairing the
JCC Dinner Dance Gala multiple times.
She has also chaired the JCC Annual
Meeting and participated on the Super
Bowl raffle committee the past five years.
Maloff is an active volunteer with several
local organizations including the Syracuse
Hebrew Day School, which honored her
with the Woman of Valor Award in 2000
and the Volunteer Award of the Year in
2002.
Helen Marcum and the late Phil Stein
were honored with the Hall of Fame
Award, which recognizes and celebrates
individuals who have dedicated themselves
to the Syracuse Jewish community and to
the advancement of the JCC.
Helen Marcum is a former JCC of
Syracuse board member and she was the
center’s second female board president.
Her dedication to volunteering started at
an early age and she has generously given
her time and talents to many nonprofit
organizations. Marcum is currently a
board member and finance chair of the
New York State Federation of Women’s
Clubs, board member and treasurer of the
Syracuse Federation of Women’s Clubs
and member of the Jewish Observer
advisory committee. Her honors include
receiving the Esther and Joseph Roth
Award for Outstanding Jewish Community
Leadership from the Jewish Federation of
Central New York, The Post-Standard’s
Woman of Achievement Award in
Volunteerism and the Hannah G. Solomon
Award from the National Council of Jewish
Women (NCJW).
Phil Stein, CPA, passed away in May,
2015. He was the JCC’s long-time auditor

and a partner with D’Arcangelo & Co.
certified public accountants. Stein was
well respected in his field and is very
much missed by clients and co-workers.
He served as treasurer of LaFayette Golf
and Country Club, Temple Concord,
Menorah Park, Metropolitan School for
the Arts and the Syracuse International
Film Festival. He was a member of the
NYS Attorney Grievance Committee and
the Cavalry Club, and a past president of
LaFayette Golf and Country Club. Stein,
a congregant of Temple Concord, also
was an active community volunteer with
Junior Achievement and Canine Working
Companions.
The JCC of Syracuse’s Annual Meeting
& Gala is the center’s largest and most
important annual fundraiser. This year’s
event proceeds, as in the past, will provide
significant funding for scholarships to
individuals in the JCC’s early childhood,
after school, summer camp and senior
programs.
