Journalist-author Dyke Hendrickson<br />

is scheduled to speak at the Custom<br />

House Maritime Museum on Friday,<br />

Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. about research for<br />

his new book, “Nautical Newburyport:<br />

A History of Captains, Clipper Ships<br />

and the Coast Guard.” Hendrickson,<br />

of Newburyport, recently completed a<br />

study of the maritime legacy of the city<br />

from 1764 to 1915. His presentation<br />

will include two dozen slides focusing<br />

on shipbuilding, trade on the riverfront,<br />

engagement in the Revolutionary War<br />

and the War of 18<strong>12</strong> and the birth of<br />

the Coast Guard. The book is finished,<br />

and is slated for publication in March<br />

by The History Press of Charleston,<br />

S.C. The veteran journalist will discuss<br />

his plan to bring research to the<br />

community. It is called “Taking Port<br />

History to People” and he will use the<br />

kickstarter.com platform to initiate the<br />

program. His presentation is part of the<br />

Maritime Museum’s “first Friday” series<br />

at which historical themes are discussed.<br />

This is Hendrickson’s fourth book.<br />
