TRITON – One of 31 new
school superintendents in
Massachusetts this fall, Brian
Forget may be the best prepared as
he steps into Christopher Farmer’s
shoes at the helm of the Triton
Regional School District.
From a student teacher at Pine
Grove Elementary School 22
years ago, Forget, now 43, has
been a teacher, assistant principal,
principal, business manager and
assistant superintendent, all at
Triton, before the Triton school
board appointed him last spring
to replace the retiring Farmer.
But as knowledgeable as he is
about Triton, its communities,
the budget, the politics of working
with three town governments and
the state Department of Education,
Forget said he will spend much of
his first year listening.
Quoting an old saying, Forget
said, “I am going to go slow to go
fast.”
He is planning to conduct
parent forums in each of the
schools and interview 40 or 50
people who have a direct impact
on Triton from town managers
and selectmen to the executive of
the teachers union.
Because he has played so many
roles in the district, he said it
would be easy to assume he knows
everything he needs to for being
the superintendent. “I have a
sense of what we do well, what are
our challenges,” he said.
But he said the change in role,
even if it is just down the hall from
one office to the larger corner
office, is giving him a different
perspective.
“I will be asking everyone to
show me the good, the bad and
the ugly,” he said.
He expects to outline his plan for
the year at the Sept. 14th school
board meeting, which will include
a discussion on conducting the
forums and personal interviews.
Next spring, he plans to unveil
what he has learned during the
fall and winter conversations and
outline how he will address each
issue he has heard.
At the same time, Forget is
going through a three-year, staterequired
new superintendent
induction program with Christine
McGrath, a long-time Tewksbury
superintendent, as his mentor.
The program, which involves
numerous meetings with other
superintendents and his mentor,
will be like having a second job, he
told the school board last week.
Continued from page 1
generated no revenue.
Despite opposition from
residents along Central Avenue
and Central Way to the solar farm
behind Country Gardens, the
town of Rowley has approved the
solar farm. Under town law, the
owners of the property, which is
in the outlying district, have the
right to lease the property for a
solar farm. It needs only a site plan
review by the Planning Board.
The Planning Board, acting
under a new solar farm bylaw,
also approved a second solar farm
on five acres of a 33-acre tract
at 157 Newburyport Turnpike.
Both farms, approved by the
Planning Board and Conservation
Commission, will generate about
a half megawatt of electricity,
which Brightergy will sell to the
Rowley Electric Co.
Brightergy is a national energy
company, based in Kansas City,
MO. It has installed 1,500 solar
projects in 17 states, mostly in
the Midwest and Southeast.
With a Massachusetts office in
Charlestown, it is erecting the
nation’s largest campus solar
energy system at the University of
Forget Takes The Triton Reins
As superintendent, Forget steps
into what he believes is a wellfunctioning
district. “We deliver a
good product,” he said. But Triton
faces some difficult challenges.
The issue that may have the
broadest impact is the declining
enrollment in Triton schools. In
broad numbers, Triton is projected
to have 600 fewer students in
the next 10 years. That affects
numbers of classes. It impacts
budgets and what the towns of
Newbury, Rowley and Salisbury
pay to support the schools.
When Forget was an elementary
teacher, there were four and five
classes per grade. Now there are
two or three in most grades, he
said.
The middle school once had
500 students and now has 300.
The high school, which had 1,000
students, has 600, he said.
The decline in students means
fewer classroom teachers, he said.
But state mandates that require
hiring staff to be reading and math
specialists for students, to teach
those who have severe medical
issues and learning disabilities
have not reduced significantly the
size of the staff.
“We have to meet the needs of
each learner,” he said.
The district will continue to
focus on math and literary, but
he wants to find ways to bring
“rigorous standards of education”
Rowley Approves First Solar Farms
Massachusetts at Amherst. When
completed, the campus will
have 15,000 solar panels on six
buildings and over two parking
lots.
In Rowley, there was no
opposition to the Newburyport
Turnpike field. The only hiccup
in winning its approval was a
concern by the Conservation
Commission about the number
of trees and vegetation that would
have to be cut down.
Not so with Freitag’s field.
Nearby neighbors were not
happy. “Are they ever happy?”
asked Freitag, who said about
half of the abutters supported the
project. The others did not.
Several of the neighbors showed
up at the planning board meeting
to voice concerns. Most objected
to having to view the panels from
their homes, so the Planning
Board required Brightergy to
move the panels to the back part
of the acreage and plant additional
trees as a buffer.
Others were worried that the
installation of the panels would
create dust. So the Planning Board
instructed Brightergy to keep the
construction dust down.
in all areas, such as science. He
even wants to discuss how Triton
schools find time in the students’
day for them to run outside and
breathe fresh air.
Each year, Triton has to win
the approval for its budget of two
of its three towns. The declining
student enrollment, which has
hit Newbury and Rowley, has
brought calls from the towns for
a makeover of how they fund the
district.
A board subcommittee will
present some ideas on how to
revise the regional school funding
agreement at its Sept. 14th
meeting.
A white hardhat that sits on
the bookshelf behind Forget’s
desk is a practical symbol of the
construction he is overseeing at
the new stadium and will likely
oversee as Pine Grove Elementary
John and Kathleen Petrowicz
sent a letter voicing concerns
that the solar panels might cause
interference with radio frequencies
in the area.
Gary Fraser, who lives next to
the field, is most concerned about
the panels causing a fire in the
wooded area. “If there was a fire,
who would take care of it?”
Fraser said Brightergy had been
unresponsive to several questions
from the neighbors. In addition
to the fire issue, he and others
have asked what company will
manufacture the solar panels.
“We want to know if they are
going to be made in China,” he
said. He said some Chinese solar
panel manufactures have a high
failure rate.
He also said Brightergy has
not paid the required fee to the
Conservation Commission.
Finally, Fraser said he and other
abutters may challenge the legality
of the Planning Board’s approval
with Secretary of State William
Galvin.
“I don’t know what we are
dealing with,” Fraser said of
Brightergy. “But it does not sound
good.”
their daughter out of the bathroom and down to the ballroom where wedding guests await her. For additional information,
NEWBURYPORT - A controlled white-tailed deer hunt has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Parker
River National Wildlife Refuge, Newburyport, Massachusetts. As an integral part of a comprehensive Refuge Wildlife
Management Program, this annual hunt helps maintain the deer population at a level commensurate with the available
habitat while providing recreational opportunities for the hunting public. The hunt is by Refuge permit only with a
maximum of 35 hunters, including up to 4 paraplegic hunters, to be selected by public lottery on Monday, October 3,
2016 at 2 pm at Refuge Headquarters, 6 Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport. To apply for a permit, send a single 3” x
5” card containing your complete name, address, daytime phone number and Massachusetts deer hunting license number
to Refuge Headquarters. To allow for two people to hunt together on the same day, up to two hunters may apply on the
same single 3” x 5” card but all the required information must be included on the card for both applicants. Only one
Paraplegic hunter is required for a buddy team to qualify for the paraplegic hunt lottery. A paraplegic hunter may also have
an assistant who is not allowed to hunt and whose name and other information should not be included on the application.
A paraplegic hunter should note “paraplegic” on his/her application card so as to
ensure entry into the paraplegic hunt lottery. Only one application is permitted
per party. A self-addressed stamped envelope should be submitted, one for each
hunter, with the application. All applications must be received by COB, Saturday
October 1, 2016. Successful applicants must attend a one hour Refuge Hunter
Safety & Orientation Program scheduled for the morning of Saturday, October
22 at 10:00 am or the make-up orientation on Thursday October 27 at 7:00 pm.
Both sessions will be held at the Refuge Headquarters. The lottery winners will
be charged a $20 permit fee to participate in the Refuge hunt with the fee reduced
to $10 for holders of valid Senior or Access Passports. The hunt zone will consist
of approximately 1400 acres on the Plum Island section of the Refuge. To ensure
public safety, the entire Plum Island section will be closed to all other activities for
the day of the hunt. For further information contact Refuge Headquarters located
at 6 Plum Island Turnpike Newburyport, MA 01950, or phone 978-465-5753.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Dental decay (caries) is still very
prevalent in today’s society. There
are many factors that contribute
to dental decay. In addition, there
are some people who are more
susceptible to decay than others.
In an article in the Journal of the
American Dental Association
(JADA), sugar-sweetened
beverages, one of the main culprits
for dental decay, was discussed.
Dental decay is a multifactorial
disease characterized as an
infectious process during which
carbohydrates are fermented
by specific oral bacteria at the
tooth surface. This results in acid
production and enamel breakdown.
It should be noted that the
beverages described in this column
are not the only things that lead
to dental decay. Anything rich in
carbohydrates or with high acidity
can lead to decay. In addition, the
right bacteria, genetics, improper
home care, and salivary flow are all
contributing factors.
With regards to beverages
specifically, as described in
the JADA article, the main
carbohydrate additives to note are
sugar, lactose, high-fructose corn
When it’s time to sign up for
Medicare, we’re advised to start
three months in advance. That
three months might not be enough
time to get all the information
you need. Your enrollment period
is three months before and three
months after the month you turn
age 65.
Start by going online to www.
medicare.gov and look at the
drop-down menus under What
Medicare Covers and Your
Medicare Costs.
One thing to consider (and it
takes the most time) is whether
you need a Medicare Advantage
Brighter Smiles...
Do You Have a Decay Problem?
syrup, sucrose, fructose, glucose,
maltodextrin, and honey. The
beverages to watch for containing
these are milk – yes milk, flavored
milk, 100 percent fruit juice and
vegetable juice, soda, juice drinks,
sports drinks, flavored water,
flavored tea and coffee, energy
drinks, smoothies, and nutritional
supplements.
People usually consume
multiple beverages daily. As I
have mentioned in past columns,
one of the worst things you can
do is to drink these kinds of
beverages slowly throughout the
day. Constant introduction of
carbohydrates over a prolonged
period feed bacteria and never
allow the saliva to neutralize the
oral environment. If you have
decreased salivary production this
makes the situation much worse.
Here is a list of recommendations
as stated in the JADA article:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Consume these types of
beverages at meals only
Limit these types of
beverages to once per day
and to 12 ounces
Consume these beverages
within a 15-minute time
frame
Using a straw is preferable
Replace these sugary
beverages with artificially
sweetened or unsweetened
beverages
Brush teeth with fluoridated
Senior Scene
toothpaste 20 minutes after
intake
7. Chew sugar free gum
immediately after intake
8. Rinse mouth with water
immediately after intake
Changing our habits is difficult
but dental decay is preventable.
Following the guidelines above and
practicing good oral hygiene can
prevent the most common reasons
for decay. Most people have plenty
of room for improvement with
their oral hygiene.
Back to school homework: Assess
your daily beverage consumption
and make any changes necessary to
comply with the above information
– especially if you are prone to
dental decay. And, before your
next dental appointment, clean
your teeth the way you normally
do. At the beginning of your
appointment ask your hygienist
or dentist to assess how well you
are doing at plaque removal. You
will be surprised at what you are
missing.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
