Canal Grande dove trovare un
buon posto prima della
partenza del corteo, muniti di
viveri e bibite. Finalmente il Canale
si calmava e diventava
piatto, liscio, perfetto; chi
rompeva gli equilibri tuffandosi
o mollando gli ormeggi veniva
investito dai getti d’acqua dei
vigili del fuoco sempre all’erta.
I cortei avevano un ruolo politico
e sociale - incluso qualche
fischio alle autorità. Con gli anni
anche questo momento ha
subito mutazioni significative:
dai vocianti gruppi di barche a
remi si è passati alle barche a
motore i cui fumi annebbiavano
e “aromatizzavano” l’aria, per
arrivare alla calma di questi
ultimi anni.
Perciò l'appuntamento rimane
lo stesso ma notate una minor
partecipazione?
La festa negli ultimi anni ha
perso mordente e gli spettatori
sono sempre di meno. Il declino
sembra incontenibile e
drammatico. Non è ammissibile
perdere un simile evento e tali
emozioni, perdere i significati di
questa storia unica.
Quali erano i momenti più
intensi e partecipati di questa
giornata?
Il finale ad esempio: visti passare
i nostri eroi, si mollavano gli
ormeggi per immergersi in un
mare di barche impazzite,
ognuna con direzioni diverse,
spesso bloccate da veri e propri
ingorghi e dai cordini tesi a
protezione della zona della Machina.
Ma come fare per riportare la
gente in Canal Grande?
Ci ho pensato per tre anni
senza trovare persone che mi
wonderful day of celebration: it

of the world of rowing, of Venice

You are speaking in the past
tense: is this no longer how it
is?
Indeed: we would get together
early in the morning and then
row to the Grand Canal where
we would try and find a good
position before the pageant left,
armed with lots of food and
drink. In the end, the Canal
would calm down, becoming
flat, smooth, perfect; anyone
who tried to upset the balances
by diving in to the water or leaving
their moorings would be
knocked over by the water jets
sprayed by the ever-alert firemen.
The pageants played a
political and social role – and
also contained an element of
criticism directed at the authorities.
Over the years, it also
underwent a series of significant
changes: passing from vociferous
groups of rowing boats to
motor boats, with smoke that
would fog and “perfume” the air,
before finally achieving the calm
that has reigned for the past few
years now.
So would you say that the
event has remained the same,
but you note that fewer people
are taking part in it?
Over the last few years the
event has lost its edge and the
number of spectators attending
continues to fall. The decline in
attendance appears to be
uncontainable and dramatic.
It is unthinkable that we could
lose such an event, and the
emotions that accompany it. It is
simply unthinkable that we
