Her Success Story 

Deepika Padukone is one of the prominent Bollywood actresses with 

an impressive record of box office hits and ad endorsements to her 

credit. She is the highest paid Bollywood actress since 2003, reaching 

the status of being among the top highly actress paid actresses in the 

world. The model-turned actress was born on January 5, 1986 but spent 

her growing years in Bangalore, where she studied and learns badminton. 

Her father is the former badminton player of international repute, 

Prakash Padukone, while mother Ujjala has her own travel agency. Her 

sister Anisha Padukone is a golfer. 

Though she represented her state in several national –level badminton 

championships, Deepika naturally veered towards modeling. Her first 

movie was ‘Aishwarya’ a Telugu film which released in 2006. A year later, 

Deepika debuted in her first Bollywood film ‘Om Shanti Om’ opposite the 

biggest Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. The movie was a run-away 

box-office hit. After a spate of flops and lukewarm hits, her career got a 

turning point in 2012 with the success of the movie ‘Cocktail’. After this, 

all of her movies released in 2013 were super hits, earning monies in 

excess of USD 16 million (INR 100 crores). Chennai Express, one of 

the movies released in 2013, which had her giving one of her careerbest 

performances, earned $64 million, becoming the second biggest 

Bollywood hit worldwide in terms of revenue. In 2014, Deepika starrer 

‘Happy New Year’ earned $57 million, becoming the 5th highest grossing 

film worldwide.

7 crore (or 70 million INR) for Bajirao Mastani which is equivalent to 

1,124,660.59 USD. She signed a 1 million USD contract with Garnier 

( 60 million INR) in 2012. Her net earnings as listed by Forbes is 

$6,600,000,her sponsorship earnings from various brands comes to 

$1,090,000 and her property at Prabhadevi Mumbai is worth $3,470,000 

In 2016, Deepika Padukone made it the list of the top ten richest actresses 

in the world. She was positioned at number 10 with $10 million 

in earnings.

cars. The carpet area of the house is 2,776 square feet and is close to

Scarlett Johansson of Captain America: Civil War was third at $25 million, 

down nearly 30 percent from 2015. Together, the world’s 10 highest-paid 

actresses tallied a combined $205 million between June 1, 

2015 and June 1, 2016, before management fees and taxes, Forbes 

said. The estimates include earnings from movies, TV and endorsements 

from cosmetic and other companies. The rest of the top 

10 of this year’s highest-paid actresses are Jennifer Aniston 

($21 million), Fan Bingbing ($17 million), Charlize 

Theron ($16.5 million), Amy Adams ($13.5 million), 

Julia Roberts ($12 million), Mila Kunis ($11 million) 

and Deepika Padukone ($10 million).

Deepika Padukone XXX 

Deepika Padukone is the latest Bollywood star to go international 

and the actor says although she is proud to 

have bagged XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, she is 

nervous about venturing into a new territory. 

The 30-year-old Bajirao Mastani actor will share 

screen with Hollywood Vin Diesel and Samuel L Jackson 

in the DJ Caruso-directed action thriller, which is the third installment 

of the XXX film franchise. Deepika says her ethnicity helped her 

bag the role and in the film she will be given an opportunity to flaunt 

her Indianness. 

“I am very excited. But I want to confess that I am very nervous. Most 

importantly I feel proud to be a part of a film where I get to flaunt my 

ethnicity,” said Deepika. 

“The reason they are roping me is because of my background. I really 

hope that I do well in the movie and people go and watch it,” said 

the actor, who was in the capital for the launch of the new collection 

from luxury Swiss watchmaking company Tissot. The actor says it 

has been her constant effort to keep improving every year and she is 

happy to see her efforts pay off two years in a row. 

“I work to compete with myself and keep setting the benchmark for 

myself, to keep bettering. After a successful 2014, I hoped I can do 

better and then it happened in 2015. It is my constant desire to keep 

improving,” she said. 

With back-to-back film shoots and other commitments, the actor says 

that she makes sure she reads and also tries her hands at baking. “I 

haven’t got a weekend for the past three years. But when I do get it, 

I like to just catch up on sleep. I also love baking and reading. Currently, 

I am reading the biography on Elizabeth Taylor.”

60! 

Anil Kapoor is now gearing up for his next big thing, 

which is the season 2 of his headline making show – the 

Hindi version of the popular international TV show 24. 

Anil Kapoor is now touching 

60, but the actor has 

enough energy levels 

to put many youngsters 

to shame. But then he 

doesn’t not want to 

pull them down when you ask him about 

working with the newer lot. 

“Sometimes you do learn a lot from the 

younger generation. They have so much 

to offer you and mediums like cinema 

and television. They are full of new ideas, 

and new way to do the same thing that we 

have done differently before. Unless you 

learn quickly from them, you will be left 

behind,” elucidates the actor. 

But then the actor believes in being fit. 

“it is important to spend an hour and a 

half daily on yourself. If you are fit, you 

are happy and you can spread the cheer 

around. But if you are unwell, sick and in 

bad moods, you will not be able to do that. 

It is important to be physically, emotionally 

and spiritually fit in order to do good in 

your life and career and that is what I am 

trying to do every day,” he says honestly. 

Honesty has been a very integral part of 

Anil Kapoor’s career. 

“I belong to a middle class family and I 

remember when no producers were ready 

to cast me in their films. But thanks to 

my stars and my sincere efforts that have 

borne fruits for me,” shares Anil. 

In those days, Anil Kapoor used to host 

parties and would suddenly go missing 

in the middle of the party. “I was called 

a very boring person. I did not have controversies 

around me. I would call people 

for a party, but then I had a habit of going 

to sleep soon and I would. I am seeing 

the fruits of that today in my fitness. 

It does not pay overnight, the fruits of my 

patience is paying off today and it will for 

everyone who will do the right things irrespective 

of what people talk about them. 

I am happy to have been a boring person 

then. I am a happy person today,” he says.

tional with Slumdog Millionaire, he has 

time and again proven his critics wrong 

and wormed into the hearts of his audience. 

When he had turned producer for 

Gandhi My Father, a critically acclaimed 

film, he had humbly said, “I have put in 

all my experiences of being in this industry 

and tried to put an emotional as well 

as an intriguing tale. Hope you guys have 

liked it?” 

Anil has also been very supportive to his 

daughter Sonam Kapoor’s acting aspirations. 

“More than being nervous as a 

father I am very happy to watch her on 

the silver screen. It gives me immense 

pleasure to watch my daughter having 

performed so very exuberantly. Today it 

makes me feel Sonam has grown up. And 

I am all ready to give her away to the 

world, where she can fulfil her duties and 

make me proud, as well as all the other 

people who are involved in making her 

excel in Bollywood.” 

Like a good father he always opined that 

his kids need to make it up the hard way. 

Asked about his son, Harshvardhan Kapoor 

who makes his debut with Mirziya 

and not launched in a comfortable home 

production, he says, “I wanted him to pursue 

his choice whatever it may be. Be it 

acting, writing or direction. I am not the 

one who was born with a silver spoon in 

my mouth and so I wanted him also to 

come up the hard way, through the never 

ending learning process. I am not going to 

invest for him and give him everything on 

the platter.” 

About having innovated on his look onscreen 

time and again, he shares, “All the 

films we have made, there was a conscious 

decision to be ahead of time. Hence, people 

can even watch those films today and 

get entertained. I’ve changed my look for 

so many films.” Sharing about how he did 

it differently in various films, he confesses, 

“For Lamhe, I removed my moustache, 

then for 1942: A Love Story, I cut my hair 

short, and changed the whole look. But in 

those times the media didn’t pay attention. 

During 1942: A Love Story, Vidhu Vinod 

Chopra and I decided, let’s call the media, 

I’m changing my whole look, but there 

was nobody apart from me and him, and 

now some actor just starts wearing an earring 

and media creates a hype.” 

About the younger generation of actors 

following in his footsteps, he says, “I like 

it when people think someone has followed 

me, like while films like Koi Mil 

Gaya or My Name is Khan released, people 

told me they were reminded of my role 

in Eeshwar, I felt good.” 

About not getting bogged down by defeats, 

he opines, “Definitely, I am not the 

one who will sit down and feel defeated if 

any of my films may have not done well at 

the box office. I have innumerable ideas, 

which will go up one by one through Anil 

Kapoor Productions. My experiences 

have encouraged me to face every kind of 

challenges. I believe in working in good 

as well as odd circumstances.” Unaffected 

by hits and flops he adds, “Hits and flops 

is a part and parcel of our profession. I do 

feel bad while some of my films did not do 

well at the box office. As a producer my 

films did not do well but then I always like 

to find out what may have gone wrong. I 

always agree to the judgment of my audiences 

as I know they are the ones who 

have made me the actor that I am today.” 

How was the response to Season 1 of 24? 

“I am happy with the response. People 

wave at me, while I visit cinema halls. 

They come up to me wishing to watch 

more of me. With all their praises, I feel 

I need to work harder to satisfy my audiences. 

This serial could be possible because 

of my director, my colleagues and 

the entire team. The power of television 

reach is magnanimously huge.” 

Anil Kapoor has stayed away from television 

for a long time, but then decided 

that he would enter TV with 24. Why 24? 

“Role, story and the script. These are the 

three things that an actor needs. Add to 

that there are fabulous makers behind it, 

I have great directors on board, the coactors 

with me on the show are the best. 

There are times in any film or TV show, 

something is missing. But then I find 

nothing amiss here. Everything seems to 

be so perfectly in place. I think it is the 

best role I have ever done in my entire 

career including my films. It is wonderful 

how the story moves within the space of 

24 hours. That kind of thrill and drama is 

unimaginable,” says Kapoor. 

Strange coming from a man who has essayed 

roles in almost every genre in the 

film industry and hence has a longevity 

few actors can boast of. “I have done a 

Welcome or a Welcome Back and have 

tried to balance that with a 24 and a Dil 

Dhadakne Do. I have done light hearted 

films and then I have gone in for a film 

like Virasat and one like Nayak as well. 

That is because I never wanted to be 

bogged down in an image. It is very easy 

to think that if I am doing well in a particular 

genre, I should shut up and do more 

films like that and make a lot of money. In 

the bargain, in fact, I have lost out a lot not 

just financially, but on my stardom as well 

when I have attempted offbeat roles. I 

know it has not been the best to happen to 

my career, but I have been satisfied with 

my work and that for me is sacrosanct,” 

avers the actor. 

And that is one reason why Kapoor does 

not care much about then wags that say 

that the television rating points of Season 

1 of 24 did not make the cut. “I used to 

get affected earlier when people said these 

things. I would sometimes react to those 

comments and remarks. But now, I have 

let it go. I am working for the audience. If 

the audience wants to say anything about 

me or my work, let them do so,” he signs 

off.

This year India was abuzz with 

fashion as Tarun Tahiliani’ commenced 

the opening act for Lakmé 

Fashion Week, his stage was 

a harmonious web. His colours 

this winter/festive 2016 ranged 

from cobalt blues, to burnt orange, safari greens 

and maroons and black. Ever-packed with separates 

like gilets, draped skirts and pleated saris. 

The Indian fashion designer was inspired by the works 

of the late contemporary artist Mrinalini Mukherjee. 

Tahiliani stated “I am not presenting dhoti pants 

on the runway for the first time, everyone knows 

what dhoti pants are, but what I am presenting is 

an attitude” Kangana Ranaut took to the ramp for 

the designer as the Showstopper. 

The first day of Lakmé Fashion Week began with 

a graduating class of designers. Sidhu Ji by Anupreet 

Sidhu, Paridhi Jaipuria and Dming by Diming 

Ribu came across as promising talent in 

the womenswear category. Nimish Shah of Shift 

showed his winter/cruise 2016 collection. Neutral 

colours offset saturated hues of pink, green and 

mustard. “Loungy yet glamorous, but very, very 

understated and evolved,” is how Shah described 

his collection. 

Manish Malhotra’s show was shot in virtual reality 

to be broadcasted globally via Etihad Airways 

- the first Indian designer to have this honour. 

Against a romantic backdrop of flowers and a 

fountain, the designer presented a collection that 

catered to the needs of a bride’s trousseau. He has 

again showed off his fabulous signature embroidery 

work with textured colours meshing. He has 

subtly used shimmer and sparkle in his outfits too. 

This was totally a celebration for all the brides-tobe! 

Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput 

mesmerised us with their dreamy grace for Manish 

Malhotra’s show as the designer chose them as his 

showstoppers. Sushant Singh Rajput was equally 

excited to show off to his four sisters that he not 

only was dressed in their favourite designer label 

but also took the stage for him. Shilpa Shetty Kundra, 

Dia Mirza, Neha Dhupia, Sophie Choudhry 

who are all close to designer Manish Malhotra 

Shraddha also cheered from the audience 

Former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen was present 

at the event, she looked her ethereal best! The 

shimmery sari that she draped with her hair let 

down in classic Sushmita style stunned the crowd. 

Bhumi Pednekar was also present at the event 

and she too looked rather classy as she donned an 

asymmetric long kurta and paired it with denims. 

I wasn’t really a big fan of the pumps she chose 

to match with her outfit because it seemed a tad 

bit worn out for this dreamy outfit. A lot of other 

celebs too made it for the show.

The Natural reversal

Dr Maimoona Mahomed studied Natural Medicine 

through a Canadian Institute of Natural Medicine.

I always had a passion to help people. I felt that 

was my purpose in life and this is how my calling to 

natural medicine began. 

16 years ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, 

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, multiple spine 

disorders including Spondylitis 

Scoliosis. Life seemed to come to an 

end for me because I was bed-ridden 

and summoned to a wheelchair. I 

was in constant agonising pain. My 

condition was worsening and it felt 

larger than life. Conventional medicine gave 

me no solution. At the time I was 27 years young 

with four beautiful children and a loving husband. I 

knew that I had to find a solution for my condition 

because I had alot left to achieve in life and besides 

my husband and kids needed me. My faith always 

reminded me that everything happens for a reason. 

Behind all adversity is a reward from Almighty. 

Almighty will never ever present a problem without

I started searching for answers and through 

prayer and determination I was led to a Russian 

naturopath that had this amazing machine 

which he used as a diagnosis tool. This

Guidelines to think about 

when creating a Will...

None of us would ever spend 

too much time planning life 

after death for our loved ones, 

however when the traumatic 

event of your death faces your 

family, it is important to understand 

how you can protect those who will 

be in need of your financial assistance once 

you have gone. This is important to consider, 

especially if you have children and a partner 

or spouse who has taken care of you and your 

children throughout your time together. The 

Wills Act 7 of 1953 provides the regulations 

of “inheritance” and below are some basic 

guidelines to know when drawing up a will 

and assist your family to move on gracefully 

through their period of mourning. 

What makes a will valid: 

• You, known as the testator (a person who 

has the will drawn up for themself) must be 

16 years or older and mentally capable of 

understanding the nature and effect of their 

actions; 

• The will must be in writing; 

• You must initial/sign every page of the will 

and the end of the will; 

• Two competent witnesses (older than 14 

years of age) must be present when you sign 

your will and also sign the will in your presence 

and each other’s presence; 

• If you make changes to your will, then two 

competent witnesses must be present when 

you sign the changes and sign the changes in 

your presence and in each other’s presence. 

The purpose of your will is: 

• To divide your property and appoint an 

executor to make sure that your property is 

divided according to your wishes set out in 

your will. Be sure to appoint someone who is 

trustworthy as he or she will be in charge of 

collecting all of your assets and settling your 

debts and dividing the balance of your assets 

amongst your heirs. You can appoint more 

than one executor. If you have not appointed 

an executor, the family may agree to nominate 

an executor, if there is disagreement the 

Master of the High Court has the discretion to

appoint a person. 

• To appoint or nominate people who will 

act as guardians of your minor child(ren) and 

create a trust to provide for your child(ren)’s 

future maintenance and education. 

• To protect your spouse from waiting for 

benefits and being left financially destitute. 

Depending on the marital regime you have 

chosen, your spouse will know what they are 

entitled to and when they will receive their 

benefits. 

What happens to my debt on an asset that 

would be inherited? 

The common law assumption is that an asset 

on which there is still a debt (an encumbered 

asset) is bequeathed without the debt, unless 

the will explicitly says otherwise. In other 

words the outstanding debt on the assets is 

paid out of the estate unless you specifically 

state who will take over such debt on that 

particular asset. 

What would happen if I died without a will? 

If you die without a will, your estate will be 

distributed in terms of the rules of Intestate 

Succession, this means that: 

• If you were married, your spouse will inherit 

your entire estate. 

• If you were married with children, your estate 

will be shared between your spouse and 

your children. 

• If you have children but no spouse, you children 

will inherit your entire estate which will 

be deposited into the Guardian’s Fund until 

they reach the age of majority and then receive 

equal distribution of your assets, unless 

you specifically allocate their inheritance. 

• If you do not have a spouse or any children 

your parents will get everything. 

• If you do not have parents, your siblings 

will inherit and so on. 

• If you have divorced your spouse and have 

not updated your will within 3 months of the 

divorce order being granted, your ex-spouse 

will inherit fully in terms of your will. 

Tips: 

• If you choose to create a will on your own 

using a template will, purchased from a stationary 

store, make sure that you include 

terms and clauses that are particular to your 

circumstances which can be enforced. 

• If you put conditions of inheritance in your 

will be sure to include sanctions should these 

conditions not be fulfilled. 

• When there are significant changes in your 

life, it is important to review your will for any 

amendments you would need to make and 

use the words “this is my last will and testament” 

once you have updated your will. 

• You should also keep in mind the change 

in laws that will affect your assets, liabilities 

and cash flow, along with the tax implications 

that will affect the monetary value of certain 

assets you bequeath to your heirs. 

• If you get divorced, you have up to 3 

months to make any changes to your will. 

In essence your will makes it possible for you 

to leave behind instructions for how your assets 

and debts will be managed and by whom. 

It will benefit your family greatly if you leave 

them free from conflict and internal bickering, 

which commonly happens, if you decide 

not to create a will.

wanted to shoot immediately. They briefed 

me about the concept and I was okay with it. 

I thought if I let go off this opportunity, it might 

not get it again, especially to dance along with 

such a stalwart Rishi Kapoor ji. I think I was destined 

to do it. Moreover, PKPS was such a good 

team to work with right from the producer to the 

stars to director, the film title also sounds good. 

The name PATEL KI PUNJABI SHAADI is so 

vibrant.” 

Ask Shilpa if the controversy worked in her favour 

and she laughs off, “Yes it’s good for me. 

I was really upset when I had to quit Bhabhiji. 

People used to tag me as ‘News Queen’…But 

I am an actress and my desire is always to do 

something where I can creatively contribute. So 

when I got this song, I was more than happy. 

Moreover, this song didn’t demand me to be 

skinny or acquire a particular body. All I had to 

do is give my best shot. It wasn’t a demeaning 

song which only demands skin show. Since 

PKPS is a family comedy drama and it was so 

comfortable working with such a great team, I 

was game for it.” 

She adds, “It’s is a cute, nice, funny, situational 

song which comes after interval and goes well 

in synch with the storyline. It isn’t there out of 

place. People will surely enjoy it.” 

While writer and director Sanjay Chhel says 

why did he opt for Shilpa, “The song required a 

hot woman with innocent face and Shilpa is apt 

for it. She is a male fantasy yet she is popular 

with her family image! It’s a great combo of sex 

symbol & Sanskari image.”

Bharat Patel and ready to release this year.

Abhishek’s father Atmaprakash Sharma, 

passed away after battling cancer for many 

years. The funeral was held on August 26 

during which Krushna’s sister Arti singh 

broke down as the family supported each

time of his demise. Reportedly, his health 

had worsened over the past 15-20 days.

Festival of Motoring at the Kyalami Race Track 

from 31 August through to 04 September. 

“The festival provides a wonderful opportunity

executive sedan, the E-Class, also known 

as the Masterpiece of Intelligence,” says Selvin

our Mercedes-AMG GT3, a specialised customer

in the world’s most hotly contested customer 

race series. Cutting-edge racing technology

Mercedes-AMG models - including the recently

Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet. 

“For the first time in its history, Mercedes-Benz’s 

sports-car and performance brand is offering a 

four-seater cabriolet in the S-Class segment, 

which augments the product portfolio with an 

attractive alternative for car enthusiasts with a 

passion for performance and luxury,” explains 

Govender. 

“Showing off high-performance technology 

coupled with expressive exterior and interior 

design, it is immediately apparent that the new 

S 63 Cabriolet is built by car enthusiasts for car 

enthusiasts – the ultimate dream car – and we 

are ecstatic to host our local premiere of this 

model at the festival,” he adds. 

The bi-turbo eight-cylinder engine of the Mercedes-AMG 

S 63 Cabriolet is produced in the 

hand-finishing section of AMG’s production 

plant in Affalterbach, based on the “One Man 

- One Engine” philosophy. This means that 

each engine is assembled by a highly qualified 

technician who applies the strictest quality 

standards. This technician is responsible for 

everything from installing the crankshaft in the 

engine block and assembling the camshafts, to

wiring the engine and filling it with engine oil as 

clearly evidenced by the signature on the AMG 

engine badge. 

2015 was the “Year of the SUV” for Mercedes- 

Benz and, to add another highlight to the extensive 

SUV range, the brand now introduces the 

all-new GLC Coupé. 

“The sportily youthful GLC Coupé draws glances 

with its dynamically expressive design. It 

blends the striking main body section and the 

Mercedes-Benz design idiom of current SUV 

models with the characteristic elongated roof 

line of a sports coupé. The GLC Coupé is the 

sports car amongst SUVs, with a perfect combination 

from two different worlds,” says Govender. 

Hot and cool – these two poles form the sensuously 

pure design idiom of the Mercedes-Benz 

design philosophy, perfectly embodied by the 

GLC Coupé. On the one hand, modern aesthetics 

were the source of inspiration for the 

sensuous lines, surfaces and proportions of the 

new sportily youthful coupé generation with the 

characteristic off-road touch. On the other, the 

designers have created minimalist, purist forms 

which emphasise the new off-road coupé›s intelligent 

technology and engineering. All in all, 

the vehicle body appears powerful but defined 

by engineering, and conveys dynamic sportiness. 

“We will also offer off-road test drives in the 

SUV area with our highly successful GLC, our 

luxurious GLE and GLE Coupé, the new GLS - 

our “S-Class” of SUVs - and last but not least, 

our legendary G-Class. Customers and patrons 

who participate in the off-road test drives will 

have the opportunity to experience these luxury 

off-road vehicles as they make the best of every 

terrain,” confirms Govender. 

“On the handling track we will demonstrate 

technological advancements in the new 

E-Class that enable comfortable, safe driving 

on a new level plus a new dimension in driver 

assistance,” he adds. 

The E-Class comes complete with infotainment 

and control systems offering an all-new 

experience. Focus will also be on an entirely 

newly developed diesel engine that sets 

efficiency benchmarks in this segment, in 

conjunction with lightweight construction and 

optimum aerodynamic figures. An optional 

new multi-chamber air suspension system 

additionally ensures outstanding ride comfort 

together with first-class driving dynamics. 

“All in all, the sum total of its innovations makes 

the E-Class the most intelligent sedan in the 

executive class,” expands Govender. 

As customer requirements increase, Mercedes- 

Benz is now offering its most advanced hybrid 

technology in the C-Class. The dynamism and 

efficiency of the C 350 e sedan makes it a convincing 

proposition in its segment. 

“A first for the Mercedes-Benz East London 

plant is the manufacture of this C 350 e with the 

latest PLUG-IN-HYBRID technology for both 

local and export markets. The addition of the 

manufacture of the C 350 e sedan at our awardwinning 

plant to exacting world-class standards, 

is a proud moment for us. This model will proudly 

take its place in the display area on the main 

stand,” remarks Govender. 

With a range of 31 kilometres in purely electric 

mode, local emission-free driving is now a reality. 

The C 350 e’s four-cylinder petrol engine, in 

conjunction with a powerful electric motor, gives 

it a total system output of 205 kW and torque of 

600 Nm. It delivers the performance of a sports 

car and yet offers certified consumption figures 

of just 2.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. This 

corresponds to CO 2 

emissions of 65 grams per 

kilometre. 

“The smart brand appeals equally to the heart 

and mind. An expressive design idiom and 

colouring embody pure “joie de vivre”. The 

compact proportions and clever details testify 

unique functionality. The new smart fortwo and 

the new smart forfour are clearly recognisable 

as members of the same family. Many design 

features such as the headlamps, the cooling air 

grille in the front and the iconic tridion safety cell 

are identical. In addition, both vehicles are fitted 

with rear engines, making them particularly agile 

in city traffic,” continues Govender. 

Patrons will have the opportunity of test driving 

and getting a first-hand glimpse into a smart 

world of advanced assistance systems that 

were previously the reserve of higher classes 

of vehicle. These include crosswind assist 

(standard), forward collision warning (option) 

and Lane Keeping Assist (option). smart offers 

customers safety features that go far beyond 

what is the norm for this segment and further 

enhance safety and comfort.

Rose Scented Cookies 

Violets are blue, Roses are red, these 

little biscuits just go to ones head. I had 

guests from Toronto over on Sunday for 

Sundowners and was gifted with the most 

divine Fortnum and Mason Rose Biscuits. 

So here is my trial version ... Not too bad I 

might add! 

Ingredients: 

200g unsalted butter, softened 

100g castor sugar 

4 tsp rosewater 

200g plain flour, sifted 

100g almond powder 

50g crystallized rose petal bits or cranberry 

or raspberry 

50g almond bits 

Method: 

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius, and 

grease your biscuit-baking tray 

Cream the butter, sugar and rosewater until 

all is combined. 

Add the sifted flour, almond powder, almond 

bits and rose bits mix and mix well. 

Roll out your biscuit dough and shape as 

you wish. 

Bake for 15 - 20 minutes, or until slightly 

golden. 

Cool biscuits on a tray or wire rack.

Fort, the magnificent Jama Masjid is the 

largest mosque in India and the last great 

architectural work of the Mughal emperor, 

Shah Jahan. Built in 1656, the ‘Friday 

Mosque’ took six years and 5,000 workers 

to construct, at a cost of nearly a million 

rupees. It is still the largest mosque in 

Asia, accommodating up to 25,000 worshipers 

during holy festivals such as Id. If

the Jama Masjid. 

4. Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah Delhi 

One of Delhi’s historic necropolis, Hazrat

Auliya, whose grave and hospice are located

Hindu zealot on 30th January 1948. Formerly 

known as Birla House, the place 

where Gandhi spent his last days has now 

been converted into an impressive museum. 

9. Lodhi Garden Delhi 

Lodhi Garden is one of Delhi’s most picturesque 

parks, and a favourite haunt of 

joggers, yoga enthusiasts, politician bigwigs 

accompanied by their bodyguards, 

and families who come to picnic on 

weekends. The gardens are dotted with 

the crumbling yet imposing 15th-century 

tombs of the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties, 

Delhi’s last sultans. If you plan to visit 

Lodhi Garden, avoid the weekends for a 

more peaceful outing.

One of the top things to do in Delhi is to go 

on a shopping spree. While the new city of 

Delhi abounds with emporiums and glitzy 

shopping malls filled with the riches of India, 

the old city is still a dense network of 

narrow alleys and tightly packed markets

The annual Met Gala, a fundraising event benefitting the 

Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York 

City, is a tour de force of costume, celebrity and concept. Run 

by the inimitable Anna Wintour since 1995, this year’s theme 

Manus X Machina explored man and technology, all coloured 

by a decidedly fashion bend. Swarovski collaborated with two 

designers for the evening’s top tech looks, Tory Burch and 

Mary Kantrantzou whose creations embraced the latest, most 

innovative crystal technology. 

More than 840 Swarovski crystals were used in the Swarovski 

crystal colour changing panels on Frieda Pinto’s custom Tory 

Burch gown. Futuristic and feminine, the dress was embellished 

with 29 electronic ink colour-changing Swarovski crystal panels 

arranged in a graphic, minimal T shape. As the first time the 

electronic ink colour-changing crystals are being used by a 

designer, this was Swarovski’s latest crystal technology’s debut. 

Batteries and multi-pixel technology were hidden in seams and 

embedded in border embellishments for a seamless look. 

Alongside designing for Freida Pinto, Tory Burch also created 

custom Swarovski looks for actress Emma Roberts and 

comedienne Mandy Kaling. More than 115 Swarovski crystals 

were used in the panels of Mindy Kaling’s custom colour 

changing clutch, including four decorative electronic ink colourchanging 

Swarovski crystal panels. Over 130 Swarovski crystal 

elements and millions of tiny Swarovski crystals were used to 

create the Swarovski crystal fabric and crystal rock motifs in 

Emma Robert’s tiered amethyst ombré chiffon plissé gown. 

Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski Crystal Executive 

Board commented, “Tory has created truly stunning red-carpet 

silhouettes and we were so impressed by the hidden integration 

of the electronics into the seams of the garments. These pieces 

are a perfect celebration of the spirit of this year’s exhibition 

and Gala.” 

Vogue Editor-at-Large Elisabeth Von Thurn und Taxis’ custom 

mini-gown by Mary Kantrantzou was created out of a technical 

duchess satin, laser cut and fully hand embellished with 

Swarovski crystals. The gown featured arrows and other lasercut 

designs, raised in flower shapes and topped with Swarovski 

crystal hearts and stars, giving the gown its futuristic 3D effect. 

Speaking to the technical virtuosity behind the gown’s creation, 

designer Mary Kantrantzou commented, “The embroidery 

techniques used in this dress took over 5 days to finish. It’s 

special because [of] the use of technology in the laser cutting 

techniques.” Commenting on the collaboration with Von Thurn 

und Taxis, the designer shared: “Elisabeth was the perfect 

woman to be wearing it to the MET. She is the epitome of a 

strong creative woman with timeless style and we had so much 

fun creating the dress together.” 

Continuing to push the boundaries of technological innovation 

both on and off the red carpet, the Met Gala collaborations mark 

Swarovski’s ongoing commitment to creativity in fashion. With 

a rich history in supporting some of the greatest couturiers of the 

century, Swarovski remains a key ingredient in couture looks, 

both high and low tech.
