The Youth Sport Trust
has worked with 36
National Governing
Bodies (NGBs) of sport to
make clear to the School
Sport Network the training
pathway available for
young people.
As an organisation
the Youth Sport Trust
believes passionately
in the development of
young people as leaders,
both for their personal
development as well as
the positive impact they
have on the young people
they are leading.
The Youth Sport Trust
Leadership Ladder
clearly outlines the
journey young people
should take in and
through sport.
This document has
been developed to help
individuals responsible
for organising clubs and
competitions identify
appropriate training
opportunities for the
young people to develop
in workforce specific roles.
The information has
been provided by each
of the NGBs.
(schools, clubs and leisure centres).
The programme encourages leaders to
complete five different ‘topic’ areas:
1 MY Learning: Leaders are tasked with
completing a number of different
courses, both generic and sport specific.
2 MY Development: Leaders are tasked
INTRO TO... VOLUNTEERING
The aim of this module is to increase the
attendee understanding of volunteering
within gymnastics, the voluntary
opportunities available within the sport
and how to get involved.
Course attendees will learn about
volunteering, understand the benefits
and barriers, be able to identify the
qualities needed to be a good volunteer,
understand the different types of
volunteers and know how to keep
volunteers engaged.
This will enable them to support and help
their club with recruiting and retaining
volunteers. The attendee will gain a better
understanding of their own individual skills
set, which will help them in fulfilling various
volunteer roles of their own.
FLEXIBLE COURSE LENGTH
AGES 11+
INTRO TO... EVENTS
This course aids attendees to gain a greater
awareness of the variety of volunteer roles
at gymnastic events and give the leaders the
knowledge and ability to organise and run a
successful event with the help of other adults.
The attendee will be able to list different
types and level of events, the volunteer
roles at these events and how to fulfil them.
They will be able to explain how good
team work, planning and communication
contribute to a successful event. They
will also gain an understanding of the key
factors to consider when organising an
event and have the skills to plan and run an
event of their own.
FLEXIBLE COURSE LENGTH
AGES 11+
INTRO TO... JUDGING
Similarly to intro to coaching, intro to… judging
is designed to be the first step on the judging
pathway enabling the attendees to have a
better understanding of the role of a judge in
gymnastics and the principles of judging.
Attendees will be able to identify the
roles and qualities of a judge, be able to
differentiate between the basic skills and
understand common errors judges see in
gymnastics. The attendee will be provided
with the opportunity to put this theory into
practice recording and evaluating errors
in single skills, sequences and routines.
On completion the attendee with have the
ability to judge at low level competitions
and events.
FLEXIBLE COURSE LENGTH
AGES 11+
INTRO TO... COACHING
This module is designed to be the very
first step on the coaching ladder. It teaches
the attendees about the coaches’ role and
provides some top tips and new ideas as
they begin helping in the gym.
The attendees will learn about the qualities of a
coach, their responsibilities and the importance
of risk assessments and safety in the gym.
They will be introduced to different preps,
progressions and how to help out with basic
skills. The attendee will leave the course fully
aware of the role of a helper in a gymnastics
environment and how to fulfil this position.
Once a leader has attended the course they will
be able to help run warm ups and cool downs,
help assist with side activities and help out with
additional tasks in a gymnastics club under the
direct supervision from the coach in charge.
FLEXIBLE COURSE LENGTH
These modules can be completed in any order but we recommend Intro to...Volunteering is
completed first. On completion of all four modules, the assessment criteria and the associated
volunteering activities, the attendee is eligible to be certificated for the 1st 4 Sport Level 2
Award in Leadership through Gymnastics.
To register with 1st 4 Sport, the learner must be 14 years of age; however, modules attended
prior to them being 14 will still be recognised.
Delivery of all Intro To Events is completed by a BG Approved Tutor for that module. Details of Tutors
per region are available from Jane Holloway as Workforce Development Administrator (details above).
RUNWAY
RUNWAY is a fun, weekly, school-based group running
programme for young people, led by young people.
RUNWAY was developed by England Athletics, in
partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, following
research with Key Stage 4 female students exploring
their attitudes, motivations and behaviours in relation
to running. In response to this insight, the programme
was created to provide a non-competitive, social,
inclusive running experience within the school
environment, outside of lesson time. RUNWAY sessions
are suitable for all abilities and all run leaders are fully
trained by England Athletics.
RUNWAY is being tested during the summer 2016
school term and a comprehensive review will take
place in August 2016 to assess its effectiveness of
increasing running behaviour with this demographic
group and its potential to be rolled out more widely.
Subject to the outcomes of the review, this will sit
within the RunTogether suite of products.
