CANDIDA OVERGROWTH
By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom
Intestinal yeast overgrowth is an issue for many
people. The digestive tract normally contains trillions of
M m
bacteria and asmall amount of yeast. This balance is
important because having this amount of bacteria will
keep yeast in check and prevent it from multiplying and occupying
more of the intestine. When our gut is out of balance yeast or
candida overgrowth is verylikely to occur. Yeast overgrowth most
commonly occurs after antibiotic use especially broad spectrum
antibiotics. Antibiotics, as they pass through the intestine kill off
good bacteria. When bacteria is killed it gives yeast room to grow.
If candida is present in disproportionate quantities in can cause
infections like diaper rash, vaginitis, and thrush. Candida can affect
various parts of the bodythe most common being the mouth, ears,
nose, toenails, fingernails, gastrointestinal tract and vagina. Yeast
overgrowth may also manifest into awide array of symptoms. These
include, diarrhea, constipation, colitis, abdominal pain, headaches,
bad breath, rectal itching, lowlibido, memoryloss, mood swings,
canker sores, persistent heart burn, muscle and joint pain, congestion,
nagging cough, numbness in face or extremities, acne, night sweats,
severe itching, white spots on tongue and in mouth, extreme fatigue,
depression, hyperactivity, adrenal problems and brain fog. So yes,
yeast overgrowth can have manydifferent symptoms. Manyofthese
symptoms can be related to other conditions so it is important to look
into them further. Just keep in mind thatyeast could be the culprit.
Very often people with candida infections also have food allergies.
Yeast releases toxic chemicals. These toxins irritate intestinal lining
and contribute to leaky gut. When there is leaky gut, these yeast
toxins enter the bloodstream and can affect brain functioning. For
some it may give the brain fog. Forothers it can cause alack of focus,
poor physical coordination, difficulty in concentrating on tasks and
poor memory. Forchildren it can cause hyperactivity and inability to
focus. These children may even get diagnosed with ADHD when in
reality they have ayeast problem. If you have afungal infection on
your nails or anywhere on the outside of your bodyyou most likely
have yeast overgrowth issue going on the inside as well. There
are prescription medicines to treatyeast and manytimes they are
needed. Especially for more serious cases. There are also powerful
natural remedies. Aloe vera juice has been shown to boost the white
blood cells’ ability to kill yeast. Olive leaf extract with oleuropein
is apowerful healer of microbial infections. Paud’arco contains
an antibacterial and anti fungal agent. Wild oregano oil is apotent
antiseptic, powerful in killing arange of fungi. Caprylic acid found
in MCT and coconut oil can kill harmful candida. There are many
candida diets out there to help get rid of yeast. Most of them require
adiet thatislittle to no sugar and carbs. There
are candida cleanses and herbal supplements
as well. Followany candida treatment with a
high count probiotic. Always consult with your
doctor first.
PA State Parks Have Lots to Offer
By Rep. Julie Harhart (R-Lehigh/Northampton)
One of the benefits of living in Pennsylvania is taking advantage of all the lakes,
rivers, mountains and scenic areas, as well as enjoying outdoor activities such
as fishing, boating, camping, bike riding and hiking. One of the ways in which
we preserve these opportunities for residents and visitors alike is through our
comprehensive state park system. Pennsylvania offers atotal of 120 state parks
thatare free to visit and explore.
Attractions such as the waterfalls at Ricketts Glen State Park, Balanced Rock
and the Ice Mine at Trough Creek State Park, the natural waterslide at Ohio Pyle
State Park or the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon at Leonard Harrison and Colton
Point state parks are not to be missed. Plus, there are numerous shopping and
historic attractions located near manyofthe parks.
The firststate park was established in 1893 at Valley Forge in Chester County,
and since then, Pennsylvania’sstate park system has grown to encompass more
than 283,000 acres of property,200 miles of bike trails, 30,000 acres of state
park lakes and more than 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Manyofthe stateparks
also offer environmental educational programs for children.
State parks are agreatfamily destination with something for everyone,
including camping, swimming, boating, fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking, biking,
horseback riding, bird watching, photography or simply taking long walks in the
woods.
Families thatenjoycamping can take advantage of numerous opportunities
across the state to enjoysome of our beautiful parks. Most state parks have
campgrounds to accommodate both tents and RVs. Manyalso have modern bath
houses and rent cabins, cottages, yurts and sometimes even houses within state
park grounds.
To make reservations at one of the 7,000 campsites, 286 cabins (both rustic
and modern), or 300 picnic pavilions throughout Pennsylvania’sstate park system,
call toll-free 1-800-PA-PARKS, 7a.m. to 5p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Youcan book acabin, pavilion or group tenting area up to 11 months in advance
and within two days of arrival. Campsites can be secured up to noon on the day
of arrival. Fees maybecharged for campsites and other facilities.
If you never camped before and would like to try, the Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources has awonderful program to introduce first-time
campers to this greatrecreational activity.
Forjust$20, first-time campers can get acampsite for two nights at anyone
of 12 state parks. The fee includes rental of afour-person tent, rain tarp, four
sleeping pads, four camp chairs, flashlight, lantern, camp stove and four hot
dog/marshmallowsticks. Aparkstaffer will help the campers set up camp. The
participating state parks include Black Moshannon, Centre County; Hills Creek,
Tioga County; Little Pine/Hyner Run, Lycoming County; Ole Bull, Potter County;
Promised Land, Pike County; Ryerson Station, Greene County; Sinnemahoning,
Cameron and Potter counties; and Tobyhanna, Monroe County.Reservations
should be made by calling the respective park office directly.Information about all
of Pennsylvania’s 120 state parks can also be found at www.VisitPAParks.com.
So, if you’re planning aweekend camping trip, an outing with friends, afamily
reunionorjust an afternoon picnic, remember our state parks. Most are only a
short drive away and offer ample accommodations at affordable prices. In fact,
it is estimated thatmorethan36million visitors each year take advantage of the
Pennsylvania state park system.
by Lee O'Donovan
ANon-American's Thoughts
On Patriot's Day
ai As anon-native of America Iamaware that my
experiences of the 9/11 disaster are vicarious at best,
Iamhumbled by my desire to share my thoughts on
anational tragedy. If Iseem to not give my words the
gravity thatthe event deserves Ioffer my sincerest apologies.
Iremember whatIwas doing when Iheard about an aircraft flying into a
sky-scraper in America on thatFriday,September 9th, 2011 Iwas working as a
cashier in a flagship city center bank in the North of England. Asmall, portable
radio was on in the adjoining room where we would count large deposits of
money.Iheard the announcer say thatanairplane had flownintothe World
Trade Center and Iremember thinking, "is this the end of the world?" and thatI
wanted to go home to be with my wife. This was the only time in my life when I
have seriously thought thatitwas theend of the world.
The plane crash thatFriday in September dominated the news on the
television, Iremember wondering why the destruction of the Twin Towers
was so important. Inever felt the sense of dread of the day thatIhavesince
experienced in my conversations with Americans. Forme, 9/11 had the same
impact as the death of British Princess LadyDiana. (On the day of her death,
Iwas working in the kitchen of an army base, and was on abreak when the
news of her death was first revealed to me.)
It wasn't until IcametoAmerica thatIbegan to comprehend the horror
of 9/11. Manyofthe people thatIspoke to about the day have had some
connection to the event, whether personally or via aclose family member or
friend. People have told me about being grounded for days at atime for days
after when flying was stopped to ensure American security. The tale of asister
who was in New York thatFriday, how herfamilylost track of her when the city
cell phone towers were off and the relief when she was finally found safe and
sound. One storysticks in my mind, apregnant ladywho was driving in her car
across aNew York bridge when the events happened. The ladyrecalled how,
on thatday, the roads suddenly, inexplicably, emptied and howshe was worried
thatauthorities might think thatthe lone driver on the road was apossible
terrorist herself.
American national observance of 9/11 is uncharacteristically subdued, the
red, white and blue is hung at half mast over the White House and all federal
buildings. People are encouraged to display the flag at theirhomes. While
the day is not anational holiday, volunteer and service organisations hold
ceremonies of remembrance.
Iwas made awareofthe importance of remembering the day with such
services when Irealized thatthe lower grades of middle school children were
born after the day and so would have no memories of the horror.Asanation, we
need to keep speaking about thatday, how it affected us, and howweare living
after the day.
Terrorists may strike at the heart of the American people, and even damage
thatheart just alittle, but America will not allowsuch barbarity to weaken the
Nocturnal Rites
by Robert Martin
When day is rid of its nervous grindings
Asleep on the moors and river windings
Darkened forests and meadows come alive
While nocturnal rites to sound all arrive
Hearken the beauty of the cricket’ssong
Waiting all day when night comes along
‘Tis the sweet thunder of the mating calls
As Mother Nature sings thru’ hallowed walls
Little creatures blessed by asteady rhythm
Of unassuming chants by nature driven
Achorus thru’ the night ‘til mornings come
Aprelude to the arrival of the ensuing sun
Asymphonycomposed by our
Own Mother Nature
And performed by the crickets
Her Nocturnal Overture
An ode to the sounds of
Poetic nights
To the sweet rhythms
Of her Nocturnal Rites
