Curriculum Vitae (CV) Overview<br />

What is a CV?<br />

A curriculum vitae (also known as a vita or CV) provides a comprehensive description of your academic and professional credentials<br />

and achievements. A CV differs from the more concise resume, which summarizes your skills and experience in relation to a specific career<br />

objective. Those who hold master’s or doctoral degrees will need to submit a CV when they apply for teaching or research positions<br />

at colleges, universities, or research institutions. Undergraduates might use a CV to apply to graduate school or research positions.<br />

What Should My CV Include?<br />

All CVs Should Include the Following Information:<br />

Contact Information<br />

Education<br />

Research Experience<br />

Teaching Experience (advising or mentoring can be<br />

included here or, or listed as separate sections)<br />

Teaching and Research Interests<br />

Publications<br />

Conference Papers/Invited Talks/Presentations<br />

Service<br />

Advising/Mentoring<br />

Honors/Awards/Grants/Fellowships<br />

Professional Memberships<br />

WHAT TO INCLUDE<br />

Name, street address, email address, and phone number. Optionally, you<br />

can add relevant URLs or a link to an electronic portfolio or website.<br />

Schools, locations, degrees, and dates of graduation; dissertation or thesis<br />

titles, names of advisors, and committee members, and any other graduation<br />

distinctions.<br />

Past and current research projects.<br />

Course level, title, and your role in the course (e.g., Lecturer, Teaching<br />

Assistant); and any curriculum or course development contributions.<br />

Courses that you are capable of or interested in teaching; your research<br />

interests.<br />

Journal articles, chapters in edited volumes, articles for online magazines;<br />

manuscripts that are “currently under review” or “in publication (and be<br />

prepared to provide a draft if one is requested).<br />

Note the names, titles, and locations where appropriate.<br />

On-campus service; and service to professional organizations outside of<br />

the university.<br />
