W E L C O M E THE TEAM: EDITOR & DESIGN: Rob Portman rob@ridefast.co.za 082 782 8240 ADVERTISING: Zenon Birkby zenon@ridefast.co.za 074 104 1074 Sunday the 26th of September 2016 will always be a special day, not only for me but for all SA motorcycle enthusiasts, as it was the day we saw Brad Binder be crowned 2016 Moto3 World Champion. What an epic race it was. I was at Ridgeway Racebar watching the race with hundreds of other race fans and the tension was there and felt by all. Every move made by Brad, or on Brad, was cheered and groaned at, the passion inside the place was like nothing I had ever felt before. Emotions were on full tilt and I was going through finger nails faster than Zuma through tax payers money. Brad looked to be riding the perfect race until Bastianini’s team-mate - Di Giannantonio got involved and on the last lap he put quite a nasty move on Brad pushing our man back to fourth. Now I know Brad and I knew that he was not going to settle and he rode one of the best last laps ever seen to finish up in 2nd place behind Navarro. That was enough to seal the 2016 championship. Words cannot describe how manic everyone went at Ridgeway. We all celebrated like we had each just won the lottery - it was amazing! It was hugely emotional for me and I wont lie I did shed a few tears. I met this great young man back in 2006 and to think that 10 years on he is now on top of the world is incredible! I have put together a great tribute feature on Brad in this issue. Was emotional (there’s that bloody word again) putting the article together as I went through all the previous race columns and articles we had done with him, starting back in 2008, and seeing all the pics of him as a brace-faced 14 year old in the Redbull Rookies Cup brought back some great memories. The journey is now only starting for Brad who is already looking ahead to the next challenges. When I messaged to congratulate him, his answer was simply “thanks uncle, phase 1 complete, now time for phases 2 and 3. He is out to become Moto2 and MotoGP world champion, and I for one would not bet against him doing exactly that! I hope you enjoy the article I put together, as it might just inform you of a few things that you may not have know abut our Brad. Back in 2009, when I started RideFast (known as MCSA back then), I was given some advise by a very famous motorcycle magazine owner and editor here in SA. He said “Rob, if you want to sell magazines here in SA you have to get rid of racing, it does not sell. Stop wasting time and pages on riders like Brad Binder, let’s be honest, where are they really going to go? No one wants to read about young riders going nowhere.” Well, all I can say is that I am glad I stuck to my guns and continued to support not only Brad, but also the likes of Darryn Binder, Shez Morais, Mathew Scholtz and Steven Odendaal, because look at them now! A big congrats to Steven Odendaal who clinched the 2016 Spanish Moto2 championship with a few rounds to spare. He also then made a wild-card appearance in the Moto2 world championship race at Aragon where he finished a credible 18th ahead of some big names. Brilliant performance in my eyes and let’s hope we see him with a full time ride in next years championship. I will continue to do everything in my power to help support and expose talented SA riders, both here in SA and abroad. We do so again in this issue by keeping you up to date with all the guys and girls taking part in overseas championships - and there are a few of them. We also keep you in the loop on what’s happening in our local SA SuperGP championship, where down at Dezzi Raceway in the South Coast, we saw the first champ crowned for 2016. Remember the name Adolf Boshoff - at only 17 years old this kid is exceptionally talented and let’s hope he can get a good ride overseas next year because I have no doubt that he has the potential to become a world champion!
