Grand Canyon National Park<br />

considered one of the seven natural<br />

wonders of the world. Each year the park<br />

has over five million visits. It is advised<br />

that visitors come to the park in the fall or<br />

spring. Temperatures within these season<br />

are between 70 and 80 degrees.<br />

London Bridge in Lake Havasu<br />

Lake Havasu City<br />

The London Bridge in Lake Havasu was<br />

constructed in 1831. It is the largest antique,<br />

stone bridge in the world. It has become<br />

a part of old cultural heritage and a visitor<br />

favorite. The bridge overlooks the beautiful<br />

Lake Havasau and allows for exceptional<br />

nature photographs.<br />

Six Mountain Park<br />

<strong>Phoenix</strong><br />

The South Mountain Park spans 17,000<br />

acres. This park is considered the biggest<br />

urban park throughout the world. Originally<br />

it was known as the <strong>Phoenix</strong> Mountain<br />

Park. The park allows for a relaxing visit<br />

and boasts a unique charm. Throughout the<br />

mountain landscape you see many of the<br />

plants that are indigenous to the <strong>Phoenix</strong><br />

Lake Mead ranks second of the largest<br />

man made reservoirs in the country. The<br />

lake spans 110 miles beginning at the Grand<br />

Canyon and ending at the dam. Within this<br />

lake is 28 million feet of water.<br />

Saguaro National Park<br />

Sagurao National Park which boasts large<br />

cactus sculptures which are tall which<br />

is the iconic symbol of the state. These<br />

majestic plants are centuries old and share<br />

a rich history beginning in the days of the<br />

Native American tribes who first inhabited<br />

Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium<br />

Open since 1984, the Wildlife Zoo &<br />

Aquarium boasts Arizona’s largest<br />

collection of exotic animals, most of<br />

which are from Africa including giraffes,<br />

monkeys, wild cats, birds and more. The<br />

open environment offers a natural setting<br />

for these animals to live and for visitors to<br />

enjoy.<br />

There are several rides to enjoy including<br />

the wildlife sky ride that will take you for<br />

a sky high tour of the entire park. After<br />

that, take a ride on the African Safari<br />

Train through the plains of Africa and see<br />

endangered antelope, gazelles, ostriches<br />

and more.<br />

The Aquarium portion of this adventure is<br />

the newest addition to this attraction. It<br />

contains over 180,000 gallons of water<br />

and consists of 75 indoor exhibits featuring<br />

fish, mammals, birds, invertebrates,<br />

amphibians, and reptiles located in three<br />

recently completed buildings.<br />

There are two restaurants on the grounds<br />

which are open for lunch and dinner<br />

daily. Menus vary and you can enjoy<br />

outdoor seating overlooking a new water<br />

feature with dozens of graceful Caribbean<br />

flamingos.<br />

building for the whole family. Among them are exhibits including the Real<br />

reflects the history of the Native American Indian tribes of the<br />

The Sharlot Hall Museum offers live music and events. Among<br />

these events are the Folk Music Festival. The museum itself<br />

boasts early American history and artifacts. Through the frequent<br />

shows performed here you will see reenactments of historical<br />

events to provide a bird’s eye view into early American life.<br />

The <strong>Phoenix</strong> Art Museum offers a<br />

wealth of exquisite art collections.<br />

A portion of these exhibits are<br />

permanent while other exhibits follow<br />

a theme based on the seasons. The<br />

museum offers educational programs,<br />

tours, and films. These films range<br />

from historical pieces to feature films.<br />

Interesting Facts<br />

1. The population of <strong>Phoenix</strong> consists of 1,455,632 residents.<br />

2. The original inhabitants of <strong>Phoenix</strong> were the Hohokam tribe. It was this<br />

tribe that is responsible for the creation of the paths that lead to the<br />

Grand Canyon.<br />

3. The petroglyph located in White Tank Mountain Regional Park was created<br />

by the Hohokam tribe and may be a depiction of the 1006 CE supernova.<br />

4. According to legend, severe flooding and droughts caused the Hohokam<br />

tribe to leave <strong>Phoenix</strong>.<br />

5. Akimel O’odham (translated as “river people”) settlements are located<br />

along the Gila River and believed to be descendants of the original Hohokam<br />

tribe.<br />

6. Other tribes that have lived in this area include the Yavapai and the Maricopa.<br />

7. In the 17th century there were only a few settlers in this area from European<br />

countries including Father Eusebio Kino.<br />

8. Settlers in the beginning of the 19th century included Mountain Men who<br />

hunted for animal pelts. Mexican wolves, deer and other animals were<br />

indigenous to this area.<br />

9. In its beginning <strong>Phoenix</strong> was part of the New Mexico Territory. This area<br />

was given to the United States at the end of the Mexican-American War.<br />

10. Fort McDowell was established in 1865 to protect settlers against attacks<br />

from the Indian tribes.<br />

11. A settlement, established by Hispanic workers on the Salt River, was the<br />

first after the disappearance of the Hohokam tribes.<br />

12. East <strong>Phoenix</strong>, originally known as Pumpkinville due to the large production<br />

of pumpkins near its canal, was also known as Helling Mill, Swilling’s<br />

Mill and Mill City.<br />

13. Lord Darrell Duppa, who said the city was “born from the ruins of a former<br />

civilization”, chose the name of <strong>Phoenix</strong>.<br />

14. Jack Swilling, a confederate solider, became the city’s first postmaster. The<br />

original post office was situated on a 320-acre track of land, which is now<br />

the downtown district of <strong>Phoenix</strong>.<br />

15. Tom Barum was elected the first sheriff of Maricopa County. His opponents<br />

Jim Favorite and John Chenowth were involved in a shootout that resulting<br />

in the death of Favorite.<br />
