Holliston Teacher, Medway
Resident Seeks Kidney Donor
By J.D. O’Gara
“If there’s ever anyone who
deserves a kidney, it’s Doug
Lack!”
The woman, who had
seen me leave Holliston High
School after my interview with
the visual arts teacher who
leads the Fine and Performing
Arts Department at the
school went out of her way
to capture my attention as I
headed to my vehicle. She and
others at the school knew well
that Doug needed a kidney
and that I was there to interview
him for a humbling story.
In the past six years, he’d appealed
to the public two other
times for a donor at the behest
of his health care providers.
Although one was found the
first time, Doug had luckily
been able to stave off needing
the donation at that time, but
he then later found out that his
match had developed health
problems of her own. The
second entreaty resulted in a
number of local folks coming
forth to get tested, but none
Holliston High School art teacher and Medway resident Doug
Lack, who suffers from a rare disorder, is in need of a kidney. At the
urging of his doctors, he has taken his appeal public more than
once, in hopes of finding a living donor.
yielded results.
Hopefully, the third time’s a
charm.
“I did have a match,” says
Lack, who says a number of
people had stepped forward
to be tested, “but then she herself
had some health issues.”
Although he’s on a list for a
cadaver donor, “a living donor
would be the most beneficial
situation,” he says.
“Doug Lack has been an
institution in this school,” said
faculty member Terry Caccavale,
the woman who’d spoke
14th Walk against
Breast Cancer
Sunday October 16
by J.D. O’Gara
This year’s Walk Against
Break Cancer steps off at 1:30
p.m. on Sunday, October 16,
2016 from the Congregational
Church Green, 725 Washington
Street in Holliston. The
event, which draws several
hundred each year and benefits
Dana Farber, will be a 5K
this year, with a route change.
“On the Holliston Rail
Trail, there is a bench in honor
of Maryellen Miller (one of
the walk founders and personal
fighter of breast cancer,
who passed away eight years
ago from the disease),” says
Jayne Jones, one of the event
planners. “There was always
some thought in our minds,
wouldn’t it be great If we
could walk by that bench. How
could we make it work?” This
year, along with the help of
the Holliston Auxiliary Police
and committee member Kathy
Chisolm, says Jayne, the walk
was altered to make it happen.
“We will start our walk as always
from the Church Green,
making our way up Hollis St,
and then taking a new 5K
route that will include a part
of the rail trail and a stroll past
Maryellen’s bench before returning
to the Church Green,”
says Jones. “So we’re really excited
about the change. Plus,
that rail trail is so awesome!
It’ll be fall, and it will be such
a pretty way to utilize it.”
Although walk numbers
have not grown in awhile, the
Walk Against Breast Cancer
began, Jones attributes this
to a rise in the overall number
of this type of fundraiser.
There’s more variety of events
to get involved with, and that’s
a good thing, suggests Jones.
Since the Walk began, the
event has raised over half a
million dollars for Dana Farber,
with 100% of proceeds
enthusiastically on Mr. Lack’s
behalf. “His reputation precedes
him, and he’s built the program
to the masterpiece level,” she
said. Lack, who was named Massachusetts
Art Education Association
Educator of the Year
in 2006, has even helped raised
money for other faculty members
who faced health problems. “He
so deserves this,” says Caccavele,
of the Medway resident and Holliston
teacher since 1998.
Lack will need a kidney soon.
“I’m right on the cusp. I’m
able to function right now,” says
Lack.
Doug’s journey began with
flu-like and arthritic symptoms,
which later turned into trouble
breathing and a 3-month hospitalized
skirt with death in 1992.
Doctors eventually arrived at
a diagnosis of Granulomatosis
with polyaniitis, a rare disorder
that causes inflammation of the
blood vessels in Lack’s nose, sinuses,
throat, lungs and kidneys.
Once out of the hospital, Lack
changed his career course to
teaching.
“I decided I needed to do
something more important,” says
Lack. “I felt like I had a second
chance, a new lease on life.” Lack
still had to undergo chemotherapy
and steroid treatment, the
latter of which caused Avascular
Necrosis and resulted in his hips
needing to be replaced. Teaching,
however, has “been the most
rewarding thing I’ve ever done,”
he says. “I feel like Holliston is really
my home town.”
The town has come to his
aid more than once, and, significantly,
one man, Carl Damigella,
stepped up because, he, too, was
once in Doug Lack’s position.
Carl, who ran C&R Hot Dogs
at the time, ran a Dogs for Doug
campaign, that, combined with
donations from Fiske’s and the
Holliston Lions Club, amounted
to a fund of about $1,000 to help
Lack with expenses, a fund Doug
is still is grateful to have if he
finds a donor.
“The stars have to align for it
to happen,” says Damigella, who
received a donation of a kidney
from a living donor back in 2006.
“I had an altruistic donor,”
says Damigella, a diabetic whose
own need had been publicized
by Holliston writer Mary Greendale.
“He was a firefighter on
the Ashland Fire Department,
and he just stepped forward and
wanted to give me one of his kidneys
… I did not meet him until
after the surgery was done.” According
to core.org, over 6,000
are living donors each year, one
in four of whom are not biologically
related to the recipient.
Carl’s two children were both
considered, but could not donate.
Before the transplant, Damigella
was living with dialysis
treatment, something Lack has
not had to endure, yet.
“It is very traumatic, not the
most comfortable thing in the
world,” says Damigella. “I had to
do it three times a week, even on
vacation. There were some days I
felt, ‘I’m not going today.’”
Damigella, too, explains that
he feels he has a “second chance
at life. I’ve had a kidney for 10
years, and everything (knocks
wood) has been excellent,” says
Damigella. He hopes Doug Lack
will have that same opportunity.
Core.org explains that only a
few illnesses would prevent someone
from being a living donor.
HIB Still Digging In!
By Cherry Fenton
By the time this issue goes
to press, you may have seen
Holliston in Bloom for the first
time at the Celebrate Holliston
25th anniversary parade on
September 17!
Unlike prior years, HIB has
several Fall projects. Hopefully,
you have noticed the fall floral
display makeover throughout
town. Hundreds of mums
were planted during the week
of September 19. The Downtown
Marigold Project started
planting in advance and Holliston
in Bloom (HIB) and
other volunteers joined forces
on September 24. The two
groups planned a dress rehearsal
for the arrival of the
America in Bloom’s National
Symposium in October 2017.
In addition, all the planters
were refreshed with seasonal
color as well. If Mother Nature
cooperates, color will
peak around Columbus Day
weekend.
America in Bloom is a
national competition that
encourages groups and individuals
to join together to
improve public spaces. Cities
and towns are evaluated on
six criteria: overall impression,
environmental awareness,
heritage preservation, urban
forestry, landscape, and floral
displays. Additionally, participants
are judged on their community
involvement across
municipal, residential, and
commercial sectors. Two specially
trained judges are sent
to visit Holliston and a formal
evaluation is written up about
possible improvements. Holliston
in Bloom was formed
and has been competing since
2012. Our report was due
out late September.Several
HIB members are traveling
to San Luis Obispo, California
for the 2016 America in
Bloom National Symposium
from October 6 – 9, 2016.
Co-chair Kathy Shore, Secretary
Cherry Fenton, Community
Champion nominee
Deb Moore, and Pat Duffey
will be representing Holliston
in Bloom. The Senior Center
had plantings of shrubs and
perennials along most of its
foundation this past spring.
Now that the parking lot has
been expanded and striped,
additional planting can be
done near the entrance. Volunteers
are needed for Saturday,
October 15, 2016 for digging,
planting, watering, and raking.
And the last project of the
year will be a fairly extensive
undertaking in a public area
in preparation for next year’s
Symposium visitors. One of
the judges’ recommendations
was to expand the floral
bed along Washington Street
(along the fence in front of the
Congregational Church) so
that it is more like the impressive
display at Pinecrest in size;
the addition of shrubs and perennials
would add form and
extend the season of color.
Ahronian Landscaping will
start the project by removing
all the sod from the behind the
fence for a width of 3’.
We need strong volunteers
starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday,
October 22, 2016 to help remove
the clumps of sod. Work
will require bending and lifting;
the wheelbarrows of sod
will get put onto the back of
pickup trucks. We plan to add
compost (more bending, lifting
and wheelbarrow work). In
the afternoon, we will do the
planting of shrubs and perennials.
Please check our website
start times, and what to bring
for each day. Help Holliston
shine for 2017! Join us for a
few hours if you can. Sign up
The Tradition Continues:
The Holliston High School
Class of 2017 Hosts
Senior Auction
Most people have “stuff ” that
they no longer need—furniture,
housewares, sports equipment,
musical instruments, books, toys
Fall looks
for less
and games—but can’t bear to
throw away because it is still good
quality. Other people would love
to get an amazing deal on similar
stuff—or have the chance to
win unexpected items like sports
memorabilia or local services.
All of those people are in
luck, because the Holliston High
School Class of 2017 Senior
Auction and Bazaar is coming up
on Columbus Day. On Monday,
October 10, the HHS field house
and more will be filled with merchandise
for sale in a huge indoor
yard sale-style market—and
brand new items will be available
to win through auction or raffle.
The Senior Auction is a longstanding
tradition, a way for the
current graduating class to begin
their senior year working as a
team toward raising money to
defray costs for expenses such
as caps and gowns, the senior
trip, prom, and the class gift to
the school. Preparation for the
event begins as early as the end
of junior year, when students
begin picking up donations and
filling storage spaces with the
merchandise that will be sold or
auctioned.
“Working on the pick-up committee
has been a lot of work, but
I’ve had so much fun doing it,”
says senior Sam Ratcliffe. “Working
that hard with your classmates,
all trying to achieve the
same goal really brings everyone
together in a positive way. As the
class treasurer, I find it very important
that the Auction is successful,
and I’m so thankful for
everybody’s hard work, as well as
the generosity of everyone in the
community.”
That work will continue
through auction day, when all
hands will be on deck to organize
the merchandise and work
with customers. As class secretary
Betsy Hamre says, “The auction
has a job for everyone, whether it
be moving heavy furniture, auctioning
off items, or simply organizing
and cleaning the items for
display!”
Although storage spaces are
already too full for volunteers
to continue doing pick-ups, the
class will be accepting drop-off
donations at the event site the
Saturday prior to the auction.
Volunteers will accept Items at
Holliston High School on Saturday,
Special Considerations of
Owning an Exotic Animal
By Jacque Warner, DVM
Want to own a bird, reptile, or
small mammal? There are many
considerations before taking on
an exotic.
Is it legal to own? Pets like
“sugar gliders” (small, nocturnal
gliding possums) and chameleons
only recently became legal
to own in Mass., although they
have been available in neighboring
states for years.
What is the lifespan? Although
some “pocket pets” like
hamsters only live a few years,
there are many species that live
decades. Parakeets and bunnies
are living longer, many into their
teens. Some larger parrots and
many turtles and tortoises outlive
their owners.
As with any pet, consider
adoption as an alternative to
purchase. It’s generally better to
adopt from a reputable shelter,
breeder, or pet store than from
an unknown individual on an Internet
site. It’s critical to research
the type of pet before bringing
it home. The large majority of
medical problems occur because
animals are housed or fed inappropriately.
For example, rabbits used
to be housed more frequently
in outdoor hutches. Now most
rabbits are housed indoors, in
multi-tiered cages or pens. They
can be litter box trained and allowed
exercise around the home
when supervised. Rabbits can
become overweight from eating
too many pellets or sugary treats
or have gastrointestinal problems
from not having enough hay in
their diet. Guinea pigs have similar
needs and also have a dietary
requirement for Vitamin C. Pets
with medical conditions may
need specific dietary restrictions.
Reptiles have unique housing
and dietary requirements.
Each species is different! Reptiles
thrive in particular temperature
and humidity zones. What works
for a desert-dwelling lizard will
not work for one from the Tropics.
When reptiles are housed in
the wrong kind of set-up, their
immune systems become compromised,
setting them up for
disease. Most reptiles also require
Surprising Home Trends of 2016
I tend to be cautious when
speaking of home trends. Often,
the word “trend” scares people
as they automatically believe
a “trend” is something that is
going to go out of style in a
short amount of time. While
this is often true, there are some
trends that have longevity, and
from a design standpoint, they
are important to acknowledge.
Inspired from Elle Décor’s article
by Bridget Mallon, here are some
trends from 2016 so far that have
the potential to stick around for
a while:
Slate/Black Stainless
Steel Appliances: Although
stainless steel is still king in the
appliance finish world, there is
a new finish available and ready
to take on the market. Black
saute & GRill
RestauRant
stainless steel or slate appliances
offer an interesting alternative to
the shine and fingerprint-prone
stainless steel. It has been described
as being a warmer alternative
to traditional stainless and
works well in sleek contemporary
kitchens. Stainless steel appliances
will not be fading away any
time soon, but if you are looking
for a unique and smudge proof
option, a black stainless appliance
suite may be the way to go!
Matte Finishes: Along
the same vein as black stainless
steel, we are noticing an overall
trend in less shiny materials.
Matte black cabinet hardware,
oxidized zinc table tops, and iron
light fixtures, among other accessories
are all the rage right now.
“The simplicity of the surface
allows the color
and design to be
the focus rather
than the texture
of your materials,”
says Shannon
Malone of
Fireclay Tile.
Even the evertimeless
glazed
Alex Yavarow, Lead Designer at
Masters Touch Design Build
white subway tile can get a little
style boost when it is in a matte
finish. That being said, don’t feel
you have to get rid of all things
shiny—polished finishes are not
going out of style, but consider
mixing a shiny finish with a matte
finish for a stunning contrast.
Mixed Materials in Kitchens:
Looking for a great way to
mix polished and matte finishes?
How about in the kitchen! A
big kitchen trend of this year
has been mixing materials, often
According to a survey by Masterbrand
Cabinets, the most popular
kitchen styles these days are
“modern farmhouse” and “rustic
industrial.” Both of these styles
are almost oxymorons in name
and lend themselves to a wide
variety of materials and finishes
for an eclectic and personalized
space. Check out this kitchen I
designed as an example that has
rustic hand-scraped wood floors,
sleek man-made quartz countertops,
traditional subway tile in a
non-traditional color, and a pop
of animal print.
Mismatched Cabinets:
Another way to achieve the
mixed materials look in a kitchen
is to bring in a bold accent color
or texture in cabinetry. An allwhite
kitchen is timeless, but how
about a white kitchen with a navy
blue island? Or, if you are really
brave (and have a large kitchen),
take 3 or 4 colors that work well
together and combine them in
to one cohesive space, like this
kitchen below from Diamond
Cabinetry. By keeping sleek lines
and neutrals elsewhere in the
space, the bold color choices are
able to make a statement without
being egregious or overtly trendy.
Bottom line: no one knows
how long a trend is going to last
for, but elements of the above
2016 trends, like adding a matte
gold table lamp in your living
room or incorporating a rustic
wood shelf in your kitchen, can
easily be combined into classic
designs to create a unique and
progressive space that is all your
own.
Dental Place Hopkinton: Making MetroWest Children Smile
By Jane Lebak
Dr. Nadia Diab has made
children love going to the dentist.
Fearless, they’ll dash into Dental
Place Hopkinton, grab their
free toothbrush, and climb into
the chair eager to show the hygienist
how they’ve been brushing.
“Our practice is geared toward
little kids,” pediatric dentist
Dr. Diab says of Dental Place
Hopkinton, previously known as
Hopkinton Pediatric Dental Associates.
“From infants on up, we
cater to their needs.”
Dental Place Hopkinton,
along with its sister practices in
Westborough, Wayland, and
Weston, (and coming soon, Millis!)
have pediatric, adolescent,
and adult dentistry as well as orthodontics
to form an all-in-one
package for a family’s varying
needs.
In a brightly-lit office with a
fun fish theme (and a fishtank
in the waiting room) MetroWest
area children get their introduction
to the dentist’s chair.
Because a child’s smile is so
intimately linked to self-esteem
and confidence, Diab emphasizes
starting early. When that very
first tooth erupts, parents should
begin regular dental care.
“We pride ourselves on preventative
dentistry,” says Diab.
“We educate the child and parent
together on oral hygiene and
proper diet so these become habitual.
That sets the kid on the
right track.”
And if things aren’t on the
right track, an orthodontist is
available right down the hall.
“Think of it as proactive orthodontics,”
says orthodontist Dr.
Kenneth Webb. “There are more
options when you start younger.”
Most of us saw an orthodontist
in our teens, but starting
earlier has benefits. Webb says,
“Intercepting problems early,
maybe with a palate expander
or limited braces, makes for less
complicated orthodontics in the
future if needed.”
And for parents who remember
messy orthodontic molds, it’s
a surprise that Dental Place Hopkinton’s
orthodontists take no impressions.
“It’s all 3D scanning,”
says Webb, “and it takes five minutes.
From that data, we make a
3D-printed model of the child’s
mouth.” Because it’s really cool,
the kids take the model home.
Traditionally, orthodontists
bend wires by hand to move the
teeth. By contrast, Dr. Webb is
one of only three orthodontists
in Massachusetts certified to use
SureSmile, a system where the
orthodontist plans the adjustments
virtually on a computer.
Using Webb’s data, robots engineer
the wires to exacting detail,
measured in single degrees
and tenths of millimeters, often
correcting for multiple problems
simultaneously. The doctor then
places these wires at the next
visit. “We’re more digital than
anyone else in the state, and it
shortens treatment time.”
“It’s still an art,” says Webb,
“but this is the place where art
meets science.”
Dental Place Hopkinton
straddles the digital/personal
divide to bring a human touch
to its littlest patients. “We get
to know the families,” says office
manager Nancy Roy. “We
develop a relationship so that in
case of questions or if there’s
an emergency, the children are
comfortable coming here and the
parents trust us.”
Easing dental fears is only the
first step of this relationship. Roy
says, “Many parents are afraid of
going to the dentist but want to
do the right thing for their child.
They often say to me afterward,
‘I wish there had been a pediatric
dentist for me when I was a kid.’”
Dr. Diab agrees. “The parents
are very involved. They stay with
the child through the appointment,
and they’re given information
while we’re working so they
can do the same at home.”
The dental care team takes
an even gentler approach when
there are special needs. “These
children need more TLC,” says
Dr. Diab, “but the procedures
are the same, with no shortcuts.
We do a lot of show-tell-do: show
them, have them feel things, explain
every step of the way.”
When the practice’s earliest
patients grew too old for prizes
and sea horses, the practice
brought on a new dentist for
the adolescents and adults, and
with that addition came a name
change. Hopkinton Pediatric
Dental Associates became Dental
Place Hopkinton.
When Larry Regan joined
New England Fat Loss (NEFL)
in October of 2015, he did not
anticipate a long-term successful
weight loss. He’s now in maintenance,
having over 50 pounds of
fat gone and being free of multiple
medications, he happily admits,
“I was wrong.”
“I didn’t think I would EVER
be where I am today,” Regan
said. “I tried everything; working
out, almost every kind of diet
there was, with no success. This
was the first time I ever saw any
real results immediately.”
The real triumph for Regan,
however, is that 12 months later,
he is still substantially lighter and
much healthier. At the beginning
of the program, he weighed 232
pounds, had been diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes, had high blood
pressure and elevated cholesterol
life changed.
“Caring friends brought me
here [NEFL], because I had been
diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
and they said they both had success
with it,” Regan said. “I could
see it in them. I was pretty upset,
so I was going to try one more
thing.”
Armed with a full education
on his personal metabolic food
triggers, Regan is not only more
comfortable within his own body,
he does not feel restrained with
menu choices. Once NEFL’s
technology helped identify his
individual body makeup, his
outlook on food completely
changed.
“The food list I’m now on, is
food that metabolizes quickly in
my specific body. We all have a
different biochemistry, so we all
get a different food list,” Regan
said. “All the foods are listed as
positive or negative, with the negative
food metabolizing slowly.
If I want to eat something that
metabolizes slowly, I combine it
with something that metabolizes
quickly and that can turn my
meal from a negative into a positive.”
Today, 60-year-old Regan
proudly declares his entire
Deadline for
Holliston Cultural
Council Grant
Proposals
The Holliston Cultural Council is a local branch of the Massachusetts
Cultural Council. The Local Cultural Council (LCC)
program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the
nation supporting thousands of community-based projects associated
with the arts, humanities and sciences annually. Each year
the Holliston Cultural Council awards grants for programs benefitting
town residents. The program promotes the availability of
rich cultural experiences for every Holliston resident.
Based upon the highly successful response to our most recent
Public Survey, we have established our priorities for this coming
year to include artists who will provide family oriented entertainment,
musical and vocal presentations, poetry, guest speakers,
and classical music concerts.
We prefer to support local Holliston artists and local entertainment
venues.
The Massachusetts Cultural Council has created a new online
application process. Individuals interested in applying for grants
from the Holliston Arts Council can go to the website http://
mass-culture.org/ , click on Applicants and follow the directions.
Applications for 2017 must be submitted by October 17, 2016.
physical and mental outlook has
changed from balancing his hormones
and burning fat. He not
only possesses a healthy blood
sugar count, he is medication
free, more active and more confident.
“I am stronger than I have
ever been,” Regan said. “I have
the information to maintain balance,
and there is a sense of well
being that I didn’t realize would
come along with that. I feel very
comfortable. I wear clothes now
that I never thought I would
wear again. It has even improved
my golf game! I don’t hurt anymore,
my knees don’t hurt, my
back doesn’t hurt. One year ago,
I never thought this was even
possible.”
What will YOUR health look
like, a year from now? At NEFL
your personal imbalances are
improved right away, and the
pounds of fall off immediately.
Fairview Estates Retirement Community
It is as warm and welcoming
on the outside as it is on the inside.
The new Fairview Estates,
located on East Main St. in Hopkinton,
is gracious retirement living
as its finest.
The new Fairview Estates is
owned and operated by Hawthorn
Retirement Group, a family
owned business which, for
nearly 47 years, has been successfully
constructing and managing
state of the art retirement
communities in the United States
and Canada, including five in the
Metrowest area.
When it comes to their retirement
communities, the Hawthorn
Group takes pride in the
fact that their philosophy and
Holliston Mill
Open Studios 2016
Holliston Mill Artists will host their annual
Open Studios on Saturday and Sunday, October
22 and 23, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Mill
is located at 24 Water Street, Holliston.
Participants in the event include resident artists
as well as a number of local guest artists. Visitors
to the studio spaces will see finished works as
well as works-in-progress. The artists work in a
wide range of media including: oil, acrylic and
watercolor, sculpture and mixed media pieces,
photography and digital media, drawing, printing,
jewelry and textiles.
Mill artists come from Holliston and surrounding
towns including Millis, Sherborn, Hopkinton,
Framingham and Newton.
Light refreshments will be served throughout
the building highlighted by a wine tasting on
Sunday from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., hosted by crafted
beer and wine merchants Crafted of Holliston.
The Holliston Mill building was built in the
late 1800’s for use as a shoe factory. Currently,
the mill is home to several small businesses as well
as artists’ studios. The structure remains largely
as originally designed and therefore has minimal
mission has remained the same:
you never go wrong doing the
right thing, and that always
means putting people first.
One of the most unique aspects
of Fairview Estates that sets
it apart from other retirement
communities is the fact that two
husband-and-wife management
teams reside on the premises full
time; a great comfort to both residents
and their families.
Hopkinton’s new retirement
community, Fairview Estates, is
currently offering modern studio
apartments, as well as one and
two bedroom apartments for very
reasonably priced rents. In fact, a
studio apartment starts as low as
$2,495 per month. Each private
apartment is rented month-tomonth
and therefore residents
do not have to be concerned with
leases, or any additional hidden
costs, expenses, or other add-ons.
Each apartment includes individual
climate control, large
bathroom(s), a kitchenette which
include a full sized refrigerator,
spacious closets, cable television
service, all utilities except phone,
and an emergency call system
that goes directly to the management
team on site. In addition,
Fairview Estates offers everything
one could want or need including
three chef-prepared meals
each day, weekly housekeeping
and linen services, planned activities
and day trips, and scheduled
local transportation to run
errands or attend doctor’s appointments.
Beautiful community amenities
include a movie theater, library,
chapel, fitness center, and a
barber and beauty salon, among
others. The outside grounds have
a bocce court, a fire pit, walking
access for handicapped patrons.
Five Ways to Minimize Acne Flare Ups
Lisa Massimiano, Licensed
Esthetician and Certified
Acne Specialist
Owner of Skin Smart Salon
Using the right products in the
correct regimen is the most effective
way to clear acne. However,
there are also life style modifications
you can make to help support
the process of getting clear
skin. Here are some lifestyle tips
I give to my acne clients.
More sleep, less stress.
Get enough rest and reduce
your stress. Stress stimulates the
adrenal gland which increases oil
production in the skin.
Be aware of foods high in
iodides.
Stay away from foods, vitamin
supplements, sports drinks
and bars that contain iodides.
Iodized salt (use sea salt instead),
sushi and fast foods fall into this
category. On a positive note,
chocolate does not aggravate
acne. Neither do greasy foods
(unless they contain salt).
Stay away from “high
androgen” foods.
Peanuts, peanut oil, peanut
butter, corn oil and shellfish contain
hormones that exacerbate
acne. Instead, use olive oil, eat
almonds rather than peanuts and
if you love peanut butter, try cashew
or almond butter.
No picking or squeezing!
Don’t pick at your skin. You
can scar yourself or cause the
surrounding skin to become infected.
Instead, rub an ice cube
on inflamed pimples for 1 to
2 minutes, twice a day. The ice
reduces inflammation and helps
pimples heal faster.
Athletes-beware.
Sweat and friction from helmets,
face masks and physical
exercise can cause major acne
flare-ups on face, back and shoulders.
Be sure to rinse off as soon
as possible.
at (508) 881-1180 or email me at
I went to Skin Smart a little over a year ago as my last ditch effort to
treat my acne. I had tried almost every acne treatment out there and
was still struggling. When I went to Skin Smart my acne was at the
worst it had ever been. I was a little reluctant that anything was going
to help but within a few months I started seeing improvements.
A year later and my skin has neverlooked so good! I am so grateful
for Skin Smart and their products! – Jennifer
Holliston Lions to Present Haunted
Walk with Holliston Community Farm
Event to Take Place October 29
By J.D. O’Gara
This year, the Holliston Lions
Club has teamed up with the
Holliston Community Farm and
Nature Preserve to host their
third annual Halloween event.
The Haunted Walk will take
place on October 29, from 4 – 9
p.m. at the Holliston Community
Farm and Nature Preserve,
34 Rogers Road, Holliston. The
spooky event will be not-asspooky
from 4-6 p.m., suitable
for young children, while older
children and adults will enjoy the
6-9 p.m. spookier walk. Admission
will be $10 for adults, $5 for
ages 3-10, and 2 and under are
free.
Holliston Lion Chris Gaboriault
is chairing the event.
“We started the event two
years ago and teamed up with
Breezy Hill Therapeutic Riding,”
says Gaboriault. “Breezy
Hill ended up closing, and last
year we tried teaming up with
the Holliston AgCom.” Proceeds
from this year’s event will
support Holliston Lions Club
charities and the Holliston
Community Farm and Nature
Preserve.
Like Halloween? Volunteers
are still needed for a number of
scare sites at the event.
“We have zombies. We have
a chainsaw massacre. We have a
dragon, along with the cemetery
and the scarecrows and stuff
like that,” says Gaboriault. “We
need volunteers to make it a viable
event.” To volunteer, contact
Chris Gaboriault at gaboreo@
verizon.net.
Refreshments will also be sold
at the event, including warm
cider.
Rep. Dykema and Rep. Gregoire Attend Technical
Rescue Training for District 14 Firefighters
The firefighters of Fire District
14, which includes the
MetroWest communities of Hopkinton,
Holliston, Marlborough,
and Northborough, conducted
a technical rescue training at a
former Westborough State Hospital
site on Monday, September
12th, that was attended by
state and local officials, including
State Representatives Carolyn
Dykema (D-Holliston) and Danielle
Gregoire (D-Marlborough),
who represent communities in
the district.
Rep. Dykema and Rep. Gregoire
participated in a training
designed to simulate a rescue
from a collapsed building. This
training session is one of a series
of technical trainings designed to
give firefighters experience and
education in complex rescue situations.
The regional approach,
first debuted in 2008, utilizes
shared resources and knowledge
to ensure that firefighters are able
to acquire the necessary skills
given funding limitations. Rep.
Walter Timilty also filed a bill,
H. 3484, to create a coordinating
council for technical rescues to
spearhead the trainings through
the Department of Fire Services,
currently administered by the
state Fire Chiefs’ Association.
Holliston Community Garden &
Nature Preserve Shaping Up
By J.D. O’Gara
Work has been taking place
over at the 32 acres of land now
known as the Holliston Community
Garden and Nature
Preserve, according to Holliston
Community Farm board member
Amine Benali. The group
has a Facebook page at which
Holliston residents can see photos
and get updates in addition to
a page on the town website.
“We have been doing a lot
of cleanup, with the most significant
physical work taking
place in April,” says Benali, of
the group that has been together
since March. “It’s a vast amount
of land, so it was a lot of cleaning
that needed to be done.”
Much of the property had
had trash and junk that would
have made it unsafe for visitors.
That included the house on the
property. The group envisions
the property not just as a farm,
but as a nature preserve.
“There will be trails, hiking
trails, and people can use them
for bicycles, cross country skiing.
It’s going to be a much-used
property for passive recreation,”
says Benali.
In addition to cleaning, Benali
said, the group took soil samples
in the area.
“The soil quality was very
poor, deficient in nutrients,” says
Benali. “What we have done
is we have planted some cover
crops. It’s been a difficult summer,
but we were still able to have
a pretty good cover crop, and our
plan is to go back in, plow the
land and plant another round of
cover crop. The idea is to provide
the soil with nutrients and nitrogen,
so it will be adequate for
planting.” The second round of
cover seeding will likely happen
in October, says Benali.
Over the summer, the group
added a small number of community
garden beds, 10’x10’
boxes such as the ones over behind
Pinecrest Golf Course.
Community members were invited
to rent the beds.
“It was a very successful year,
for people to be able to grow
there,” says Benali.
In addition to cleaning and
getting the soil ready to the point
where its farmable, Benali says
the group has put out a survey on
its Facebook page to community
members, to see what they’d like
there.
“Community events and
classes came up high on the list,”
says Benali, who says it’s still
early on. Right now, the group
is working on an RFP to present
to farmers, which they hope to
have relatively soon. Members
Celebrate Holliston Announces Its
2016 Citizen of the Year Recipients
Celebrate Holliston’s Board
of Directors are pleased to announce
the 2016 Celebrate
Holliston Citizens of Year Recipients:
Theresa Lamkin and
Stephen Bradford.
Theresa has been in a resident
in Holliston for over 23 years and
is the mother of two daughters
and a son, who she considers her
“greatest accomplishments.”
Theresa has been a member
of the Celebrate Holliston Board
for 15 years (including as president,
and creator of the sponsorship
program). She served
on the Historical Society Board
for 5 years (Founder of the Taste
of Holliston), Newcomers for
7 years (Founder of the Annual
Newcomers Halloween Parade
and Holliston’s House Tours);
Founding member of the Holliston’s
Food Truck Festival (which
benefited Holliston’s American
Legion) and member of the
Friends of the Holliston Police
Station (which worked to help
promote the need for the new
police station). She also served
on the Holliston Souper Bowl
Committee for 3 years, and was
Assistant Producer to HCAT’s
Holliston’s Happenings.
Focusing on her children,
Theresa taught CCD at St.
Mary’s Church, Volunteered for
Pop Warner, and helped with
numerous Holliston School Fundraisers,
including the PTSA
Auction and Senior Class Auction.
Stephen Bradford moved
back from California in 1992 and
retired from Siemens Healthcare
in Sept 2011 after 34 years. His
heart has always been making
sure that Holliston’s Veterans are
recognized and appreciated.
Stephen has been active in
the American Legion for over 10
years and has worked his way up
to become the Commander in
2015. His tireless efforts to recognize
Holliston’s Veterans include:
a display at Town Hall that recognizes
the oldest living veteran;
the installation of a POW/MIA
Remembrance Chair display
at Town Hall, working on the
Memorial Day Parade for 7-8
years (and is this year’s committee
head) and coordinating the
Annual 9/11 Awards (to honor
those who go above and beyond)
for the last 6 years. He also
serves on the Thanks to Yanks
Board of Directors.
Working closely with fellow
veteran Bobby Blair (a past Citizen
of the Year Recipient), Stephen
organized and executed
the annual Veteran’s Day Parade
and Luncheon. He helped bring
the MA Fallen Heroes Memorial
to Holliston in June 2012
(working alongside Representative
Dykema). And in 2016,
he worked closely with a small
group of volunteers to create the
First Annual Food Truck Festival
(proceeds helping the Holliston’s
American Legion).
Aside from working on Veteran’s
issues, Stephen became
very involved with the Holliston
Food Pantry beginning in 2011.
He enjoys his regular shift with
founding member Sylvia Stickney
(another former Citizen of
the Year recipient), but can also
be found stocking shelves early
every Saturday morning. He
has served as the Pantry’s correspondence
secretary, recording
secretary and will become the
Food Pantry’s new president this
October. He has volunteered for
their Souper Bowl as well as their
Pasta Dinners with Santa for the
last three years. He believes in
the Pantry’s motto “Neighbors
helping Neighbors.”
Theresa and Stephen were
honored at Celebrate Holliston’s
Field Day on Saturday September
17th during the opening ceremonies.
The 32 acres that once comprised the Serocki property and now
belong to Holliston have been undergoing cleanup by the Holliston
Community Farm board. The group put in some community garden
plots this year, but the focus has been on cleanup of the property.
Holliston Girls Cross Country Strives for Speed
By Christopher Tremblay
Last fall, the Holliston girls’
cross country team finished 10th
out of 24 teams in the Eastern
Massachusetts Division 4 Cross
Country Tournament with an
average time of 21:31.04. This
year, under first year coach Jamie
Murphy, the Panthers are looking
to improve upon that finish.
“This year, we’re looking for
improvement from each runner.
Losing is not fun, and a loss is a
loss, but if the girls are improving
it makes it easier to take,” Murphy
said. “This team has a lot
of talent, and they can definitely
improve if they build upon their
confidence.”
Senior Captains Helen Dolan
and Lexi Mejia will lead the 20
plus Holliston girls each and
every meet. Through the first
two meets of the season Holliston
has defeated Norton, while
losing a close one to Medfield,
and during those races the captains
have both lowered their
times. Dolan reduced her time
from the Norton meet where she
ran a 20:06 to a personal best of
19:32 against Medfield. Mejia
lowered her race time from 20:25
to 19:53.
“Helen and Lexi have been
running together for quite some
time. In addition to cross country,
they run indoor and outdoor
track together,” the Coach said.
“They know each other really
well when it comes to running
habits. They are our top two runners
and should be near the top
of the league.”
As captains Dolan and Mejia
provide their leadership through
motivation and leading by example
on the course. The two
are always looking to improve
themselves and push the rest of
the team to do so as well when
running.
Running right up behind
Dolan and Mejia is freshman
Sophie Ryan, who in her very
first high school cross country
meet finished with a time of
20:10. While the upperclassmen
may not like it that a freshman
is encroaching on being the top
runner on the team they have to
respect her talent.
“I’m pretty sure that she’ll be
our best runner by the end of the
season,” Murphy said. “Right
now she’s pushing the top runners
out of their comfort zone.
Sophie has a lot of natural talent,
but is not a showoff.”
Another underclassman, who
is running in only her second season,
is Lauren Falley. Although
she is not in the same ball park
as Ryan is talent wise, the determined
sophomore is making
progress by staying focused on
her running.
“Lauren is somewhat of
a leader in her own way,” the
coach said. “People don’t realize
how old she really is because of
the way she carries herself on the
Holliston Girls’ Cross Country made the tourney last year, finishing
10th out of 24. This year, the talented group of runners aims to improve
times and tourney outcomes.
course. She is one who definitely
wears her passion for the sport on
her face.”
Juniors Emma Sayers and
Kelly Irons wrap up the top six
runners for the Panthers. According
to the coach, the duo not only
likes to run together throughout
the race, but always seem to finish
right behind one another.
Sayers and Irons are looking to
take over the roles of Dolan and
Mejia next fall with a more vocal
approach, despite both being
very quiet by nature.
Running in the Tri-Valley
League is never an easy task,
but Holliston is looking to make
a stand this fall by knocking off
some big name teams.
“Westwood and Dover-Sherborn
both a very strong teams,
and along with Hopkinton atop
the Tri-Valley League, we’re hoping
to finish behind them,” the
first year coach said. “I’m looking
to finish in that four or five
spot range (the middle of the
pack) while hoping to grab a win
or two against some of the top
teams.”
If Holliston continues to lower
their course times throughout the
season, they should eventually be
able to secure a win by surprising
someone above them in the
league standings.
Holliston’s McKenna Displays True Grit on The Gridiron
By KEN HAMWEY
Mike McKenna is a Holliston
High football player who personifies
desire, determination
and true grit.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound
senior is a dependable starter at
tight end and defensive end. But,
the road he traveled to become a
mainstay for the Panthers came
with a detour. Highly regarded
as a freshman (he suited up for
some varsity games), his sophomore
season on the jayvees
lasted less than two quarters. A
devastating injury in Holliston’s
opener against Duxbury ended
his season and left him facing
surgery for a dislocated and
fractured ankle that involved five
long months of rehabilitation.
“I was at running back, took
a handoff and ran off guard,’’
McKenna recalled. “I was in
a pile and hit the ground. The
next think I remember was
pain and agony. I looked at my
left foot and saw that it wasn’t
straight.’’
What followed was stabilization
of his ankle, a boot and
crutches, surgery that included
a plate and screws, a cast and
physical therapy three times a
week.
Where there’s a will, there’s a
way, and during the spring that
followed his injury, McKenna
was playing jayvee and varsity
lacrosse. A burning desire to
compete again was a high priority
and he was acutely aware
of the price he had to pay in
rehab. “I was itching to get back
to football,’’ he said. “My mindset
was that if I did all the right
things, I knew I would heal. I’d
get back to being almost 100
percent.’’
His junior season of football
was a transition — he was in a
reserve role at tight end and defensive
end but he played solidly
on special teams. He competed
so well he didn’t miss a beat in
Holliston’s Super Bowl victory
over Chicopee Comprehensive.
“I was playing at about 85
percent,’’ McKenna said. “I
never thought about my ankle
during the game. I was playing
on kickoffs and punts, all aspects
of special teams. What a thrill to
be part of a Super Bowl championship.
That’s been my
top moment in sports.’’
When the winter
began, McKenna competed
in indoor track,
and he placed on occasions
in the shot put.
“I got a lot of support
from my parents (Mike
and Kathy), friends and
teammates,’’ McKenna
said about his road to recovery.
“As a senior now,
I’m 99 percent back and
I’m looking forward to
another Super Bowl. My
goals are to focus only on
our next opponent, win
the Tri Valley League
Large Division and win
the Super Bowl. For me
individually, I want to be an impactful
player, and I want to go
a full season healthy.’’
Holliston coach Todd Kiley
admires McKenna’s dedication
and speaks in superlatives about
his character and ability. “Mike
had a long road back, and he
handled his rehab very well. He’s
one of our fastest and strongest
players. He’s versatile, tough,
athletic, humble and extremely
coachable. His progress had led
to confidence and enabled him
to reach his potential.’’
McKenna knows another
Super Bowl appearance takes
work and leadership. And, he
John’s
family owned and operated for 45 years
An injury drove Mike McKenna
to take a detour on his way to his
senior year in Holliston football,
but he’s back and has grown from
the experience.
understands the Panthers may
not be as experienced as last
year. But he likes the team’s
depth and the leadership of its
four senior captains.
“Mark Mulvaney never quits
at tackle, Jack Barrett is a great
leader at QB, Sam Athy is a
passionate player at receiver
and safety and Sam Radcliffe
is a workhorse at running back
and linebacker,’’ McKenna
said. “And, coach Kiley
is a great motivator and
teacher of the game.
He’s the best in terms of
strategy, and he’s got tremendous
passion for the
game.’’
Whether McKenna
is at tight end or on
defense, he relies on
strength, speed, quickness
off the ball, and
instincts. “Where I can
improve is running better
routes and being
more aware of figuring
out alignments on defense,’’
he noted. “To be
a good football player, it
takes work ethic, versatility
and being smart in a
variety of situations.’’
McKenna played end in Holliston’s
opener against Millis. He
scored a touchdown on a 29-
yard reception, helping the Panthers
down the Mohawks, 28-7,
in their opener.
An honor-roll student, McKenna
isn’t sure if he’ll pursue
football in college. He plans on
majoring in engineering.
For the present, however,
his sights are on football. Relying
on a philosophy of playing
to one’s potential and giving
100 percent, he also strives to
win. Fully cognizant that athletics
teach life lessons, McKenna
knows the value of working with
teammates, setting goals and developing
bonds and friendships.
“You learn things through sports
that you don’t acquire in a classroom,’’
the personable McKenna
said.
He also learned a difficult but
valuable lesson when he suffered
his ankle injury two years ago.
Mike McKenna learned how to
overcome adversity.
“Good health can be fragile,’’
he said. “It’s there, but in a split
second you can lose it.’’
