Internet disruptions are unfortunately still all too common —<br />

occurring in some countries/regions on a frequent basis. These<br />

disruptions may be accidental (backhoes or ship anchors severing<br />

buried fiber), natural (hurricanes or earthquakes), or political<br />

(governments shutting off Internet access in response to unrest or<br />

other local events, such as student testing). Because Akamai customer<br />

content is consumed by users around the world, the effect of these<br />

disruptions — whether brief or spanning multiple days — is evident in<br />

the levels of Akamai traffic delivered to the affected country/region.<br />

The content presented in this section provides insight into how Akamai<br />

traffic was impacted by major Internet disruptions and events during<br />

the second quarter of 2016.<br />

10.1 Iraq / As seen in Figure 43, on several different dates throughout<br />

May and June, Akamai saw sudden drops in traffic to Iraq, generally<br />

lasting for three hours between either 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. or 3:00<br />

a.m. to 6:00 a.m. utc. The outages were due to government-ordered<br />
