Chai has achieved extraordinary
things in its first 25 years and last
December, 800 guests gathered to
recognize this milestone and pledge their
continued support. London’s spectacular
Roundhouse theatre, bathed in purple
and pink Chai colours, mirrored superbly
the ‘Circle of Light’ theme and proved
a breath-taking backdrop for the event.
Louise Hager paid tribute to Chai’s
founders Frances Winegarten z’l and
Susan Zuckerbrod, its medical and lay
advisors, trustees, staff, fundraisers
and volunteers. Reflecting on Chai’s
purpose, she said, ‘there is no point
talking about the light at the end
of the tunnel. Our mission
is to light the tunnel itself,
and to give individuals
the strength and tools
they so need.’
This message was vividly illustrated
on film by two of Chai’s clients
Elliot, from London and Tara in
Manchester, who spoke unflinchingly
about their cancer experiences and
Chai’s all-embracing family support.
Welcoming everyone, Ronnie Harris
described Chai as ‘an essential community
resource.’ And hearing it receives no
statutory funding, the guests responded
emphatically, donating £1.2m. The
emotional and uplifting evening opened
with an enthusiastic performance from
a choir of pupils drawn from four
schools, where the ‘Chai in Schools’
service is supporting children
affected by a cancer diagnosis in
their family, and concluded
with an upbeat set from
TVs BGT finalists,
Jack Pack. ■
