The reason was the launch of the new
Chai Cancer Care centre in North
Manchester: the occasion in June, a
fundraising dinner, only the second in
Manchester in five years. Speaking to
470 guests at the Hilton, Deansgate,
Louise Hager recalled that when Chai
answered the community’s call for its
cancer support services in 2009, there
were just seven clients. Currently, more
than 340 cancer patients and their loved
ones are benefitting from their services
and with satellites in south Manchester,
Leeds and Liverpool, it continues to
respond to the region’s growing need.
In his welcome speech, Stuart Marks
described Chai as the ‘northern
powerhouse of cancer care,’ adding,
‘We need to ensure that we give all those
affected by a cancer diagnosis and their
families a place to go here in our city
that will match everything that gives
Chai in London its global reputation
as the leader in supportive cancer care.’
The new hub will provide expanded
and innovative services to deal with
long-term complexities, and offer vital
support to the families of young parents
diagnosed with cancer.
Thanking the table hosts for achieving a
capacity-filled room, Louise reminded
guests that Chai’s services are funded
entirely by donations and paid tribute to
the generosity, enthusiasm and support
of Gabrielle and Mark Adlestone, and
The Fed, in helping this vital project
come to fruition.
After watching a hugely moving film
testimony from two Manchester-born
Chai clients, Elliot and Tara, guests
pledged an astonishing £275,000
towards the centre’s £450,000 annual
running costs. Two former Chai
Manchester clients, Jane Mechlowitz
and Michal Mocton gave the vote
of thanks and guests enjoyed some
dazzling big band entertainment. ■
