Keep getting your Lake Forest Leader by filling out card
Staff Report
This issue marks an essential
cornerstone for The
Lake Forest Leader.
Your free, mailed community
publication relies
on qualifying for periodical
status through the U.S.
Postal Service, as well as
community support. To
keep it free, we are asking
for your help — not your
money.
All The Leader needs is
your signature and about
15 seconds of your time.
Please fill out — making
sure to sign and date —
the prepaid postcard found
inside this issue.
The returned postcards
are a requirement through
the U.S. Postal Service
that will allow The Leader
to achieve a more efficient
class of mail.
This means free and secure
delivery to you and
your family. We won’t
have to ask you again for
your signature for another
three years.
Since we are a free publication,
the postal service
requires that residents “request”
The Leader by filling
out the card that we
have inserted in this issue
for you. All you have to do
is fill out the pre-stamped
card, sign and date it, and
drop it in your mailbox.
It’s that simple.
Once we receive your
returned card, we will be
granted the new “periodical”
status of mail delivery,
and you will be set
to receive The Leader for
free for up to three years,
when the request expires.
We need your name and
address, as well as a signature
and date. All the information
will be kept private
and used for no other purposes.
If you cannot find the
postcard in this issue, visit
LakeForestLeader.com
and fill out the digital form
linked on the home page.
Earning this designation
from the U.S. Postal
Service is essential to the
continued success of The
Leader. Please take the 15
seconds necessary to fill
out the card and drop it in
your mailbox.
Great Pumpkin Contest
Seeking best jack-o’-lanterns in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff
Eric DeGrechie
Managing Editor
It sure seems like everything
is coming up pumpkin
these days. Whether
you’re feasting on pumpkin
pie or pouring yourself
a tasty pumpkin flavored
beverage, the popular fruit
has taken over the fall season.
While dressing up to
scare your neighbors for
Halloween is a time-honored
tradition, so is carving
up pumpkins in the
days leading up the holiday.
With that sentiment,
The Leader is kicking off
its annual Great Pumpkin
Contest. As in similar
contests such as the Family
Vacation Photo and Father’s
Day competitions,
The Lake Forest Leader is
calling for your best and
most creative autumn art
sculpted into your jack-o’-
lanterns.
There is no limit to what
your pumpkin can be. The
only restriction is that the
pumpkins must reside in
Lake Forest or Lake Bluff
and must be decorated this
year.
To accommodate those
who save pumpkin-carving
festivities for All Hallow’s
Eve, the deadline
for the photos is noon
Monday, Oct. 31. You
have another two weeks to
buy your pumpkin, come
up with your creatively
creepy composition, take a
picture and sent it in to The
Leader.
Include your first and
last name, as well as a
phone number and address.
The winner will
receive a spooky surprise
from a local retailer and be
printed in the Nov. 3 issue
of The Leader.
Send entries to Editor
Symphony
From Page 3
It’s big but not too big.”
Strong was interested
in attending the event to
see the cellist perform and
to see what it will be like
when he can “really play.”
The symphony was also
broken down into families
of instruments, as each
musician sat behind a
stand with a colored banner
showing the name
of their instrument on it.
Each banner was colorcoded
for the four families
of instruments — blue for
woodwind, red for strings,
green for brass and purple
for percussion.
The finale of the concert
saw six volunteers go on
stage, including Adams
and Strong, and choose
between different options
for melodies, harmonies
and rhythm. At the end,
the volunteers had helped
to create a new song for
the orchestra to play.
Monroe hopes that the
experience helps to “demystify”
the orchestra,
and show kids that they
can be a part of it one day.
“When you come and
see the orchestra for the
first time, it’s just this big
thing in front of you,”
Monroe said. “It’s hard
to parse all the different
parts. [Compose Yourself!]
shows you each one,
and I think that’s what
people really understand.
It doesn’t seem like such a
big thing where you wonder
‘where would I fit into
that?’ You can see where
your place would be.”
