The Olympus Academy Trust Update: October 2016
Introducing the Headteacher Team:
The key to success within the Olympus Academy Trust schools this year will be the strength of the leadership we
are able to provide. Having introduced our Executive Headteachers, Claire Banks and Richard Clark, in the first
update of the year, it is time to introduce the Headteachers who provide the day to day leadership in our schools.
They are a team with a range of experience, varying from a year to 16 years leading a school.
Dave Howe, Headteacher
Abbeywood Community
School
Steve Moir, Headteacher
Bradley Stoke
Community School
Sharon Clark, Head of
Primary Phase, Bradley Stoke
Community School
Nicki Antwis, Headteacher,
Callicroft Primary Academy
Nicola Bailey, Headteacher,
Charborough Road
Primary School
Kirsten Lemming, Headteacher,
Filton Hill Primary School
Jon Barr, Headteacher,
Meadowbrook Primary
School
Sharon Bishop, Associate
Headteacher, Stoke Lodge
Primary School
The Headteachers meet and plan together on a regular basis to share ideas and ensure consistency within the
Trust, where appropriate. One of the advantages of being in a Trust is not feeling isolated and having colleagues to
turn to for support and advice. The Headteachers are supported by their own school staff as well as staff employed
by the Trust for all or part of their time. Details of some of the other Trust staff fulfilling key roles will be shared in
future updates.
Application for School Places for September 2017:
In last month’s update, we provided details about applying for places in Year 7 in secondary schools for next
September. This is a reminder that all applications have to be submitted to the school admissions team in the local
authority in which you live by 31 st October 2016.
Communication:
The schools that joined The Olympus Academy Trust in September will be launching new websites in the next few
weeks in partnership with the Trust. Here is a reminder of the details for the Trust school websites and Twitter
New members of staff at
Abbeywood Community School
Carlos Martinez: Teacher of Maths Becoming a Maths Teacher was my best
decision in life. I am from Barcelona (Spain), where I worked for nearly three
years as a Process Engineer. While I was at University, I also coached
football at the same time. That experience helped me a lot to make my
decision. Seeing students making progress is one of the most rewarding
feelings in this profession. Both my passion for teaching young people and my
background in Maths moved me to get into teaching. I have been in Bristol for
two years already and I am fascinated with this city and its diversity! I like
playing football and running alongside the river in my free time.
Simon Hardy: Head of Maths The reason I chose to go in to teaching was
because I love working with people. Before being a teacher I use to manage pubs
and bars in all sorts of places from London to Anglesey. I was lucky to have got
off to a good start in Maths from an early age, but by the time I studied at
Nottingham University it had become a really rewarding challenge – making me
think about solving problems using all the skills I had learned at school. Like
many Maths teachers, my day is made so much better when I see that moment
when the light comes on for students – suddenly understanding a particular
idea. Outside school I enjoy playing most sports (to a fairly mediocre level!) but
am particularly at home on the badminton court or the golf course. I am really
looking forward to becoming a proud dad for the first time, my wife and I are
expecting a little baby girl to join our family really soon!
Georgia Clayfield: Teacher of English I decided to pursue a career in
education as I believe it is important for all children to have access to a top
quality education that captures and inspires the imagination. English is not only
a subject that brings academic fulfilment, it also allows us to explore different
cultures, social issues and historical contexts, which ultimately shapes our
understanding of the world. Outside of my role as a teacher, I am enthusiastic
about discovering new films, going out to eat and camping with friends.
Abbie Denmark: Science Technician Biology was always my favourite
subject in school and I studied Environmental Science at University. So far I am
really enjoying my time at ACS, especially when I am helping students in
Science classes. Before coming to Bristol I spent 2 years travelling across the
world by train and motorbike – the most interesting countries were Russia,
Thailand and North Korea. Outside of school I like to go to rock concerts and
festivals. I am also learning to speak Thai!
Elliese Evans: Geography Teacher I have always been passionate about
geography, in particular I find the interactions between the physical and human
world fascinating due to the complex effects it has on our lives. I am looking
forward to developing this passion with my students and providing them with
knowledge about the world in which we live. I am excited to join the
Abbeywood community and get to know my students and peers. In my spare
time I enjoy reading, playing tennis and have recently taken part in Survival Of
The Fittest, a 12km obstacle course.
World Mental Health Day 10 October 2016
During the week commencing 3 October, all year groups had an assembly to raise awareness
of Mental Health. They learned about positive mental health and how this can help you
achieve your potential and contribute to your community, but also early warning signs and
when/who to ask for help. All years were given a challenge to raise their self esteem by doing
something good for someone else. This could take the form of giving someone a genuine
compliment, helping someone in a lesson, raising money, etc.
Things that parents can help support their children with:
Sleep – ensuring students have adequate sleep (9 hours for teenagers) away from electronic devices
Food – eating a healthy, balanced diet (with less sugar in it) helps us feel better physically and mentally.
Better food = better mood!
Exercise – teenagers should aim for 60 minutes of exercise per day including cardiovascular exercise like running/fast
walking
Less caffeine – cutting down on energy drinks, tea/coffee, cola, etc. Caffeine can reduce the ability to sleep and
increase our heart rate, which can have a negative affect on mental health
Please encourage your child to talk to you about how they are feeling and ask for help if they need it. If you need help and
advice, the NHS Choices website has some great advice, as does http://www.youngminds.org.uk/ which has a parent’s
advice section. Please feel free to talk to your child’s tutor if you need to raise any concerns.
“The Grinning Man”
As part of our link with the Bristol Old Vic
Theatre, we have 25 complimentary tickets
for their production of
“The Grinning Man”
on Tuesday 8 November 2016.
“The Grinning Man” is a musical adaptation of Victor
Hugo’s novel, “The Man who Smiled” and features,
alongside the actors, puppets made by Gyre and
Gymble, the creators of the original “War Horse”
puppets. The advised age range is 12+.
If you would like your child to take advantage of this
opportunity, please see Mr Clarke in the Drama
Department for a letter.
“Cheek by Jowl”
On Friday 7 October, we were joined by Marcus
Roche, as Assistant Director at the Cheek by
Jowl Theatre Company. Cheek by Jowl are one
of the most prestigious British theatre
companies, noted, in particular, for their work in
interpreting Classical drama texts, including
Shakespeare, in a contemporary way, what
Marcus referred to as “Shakespeare in suits”.
The Year 11 students had prepared some
extracts from “Measure for Measure”,
considered one of Shakespeare’s “problem
plays”. Marcus worked with them, as if they
were in the rehearsal room, encouraging them
to think very carefully about the characters they
were playing and the decisions those characters
were making in the play. He made it clear that
much of the rehearsal process can often be
repetitive, but stressed the necessity to think in
detail about the intention and motivation of
characters.
Please note that tickets are limited and will be
allocated on a first come, first served basis,
however, behaviour and attendance will also be
considered before a ticket is allocated.
This week I have been talking to Mrs Guy in Art about what has been happening in the Art Faculty.
Mrs Guy has told me that in Art they have
been sketching shoes. In particular they
have been adding tone. For the shadow,
copying from black and white, where it is
darker we press down, where its lighter we
lift the pencil up lightly.
‘On Monday evenings, I have a very successful
Art Club. We have been making pinch pots in
the shape of pumpkins all ready for Halloween
and this week we will be painting them’.
- Mrs Guy
Mrs Guy’s Star Pupils:
‘In Year 9 Paulina Miechowicz is doing amazing pop
art and has been working really hard and I am really
proud’
‘George Beaven (Y10) is doing an amazing Alice in
Wonderland project, I am very proud of him, he is
being really independent’.
‘Also Sophie Coates (Y11) is doing a really good job’.
Mrs Guy also said how happy she was to see Post 16’s
gorgeous art work displayed, - it is beautiful and each
piece of art work tells a story.
Thank you to Mrs Guy!
World champs success for Stoke Gifford Taekwon-do fighters…..
Congratulations to both William Lambern (9I) and Esme McCarthy (9B) who were selected to
represent Team UK at the recent ITF World Taekwon-do Championships held in Brighton.
William performed excellently in his first outing at an international championships against some really
superb competition from Ireland and Australia, but was unable to get into a medal position.
Esme came up against some equally tough competition from Canada, Argentina and two Australians
in the patterns category but rose to the challenge and was elated to come away with the first place
World Champion title! She also went onto achieve a bronze medal in sparring. This was an
incredible achievement and experience for Esme which she has trained so hard for.
For the full story and photos please see the Bradley Stoke Journal, October edition, or click on this link
https://issuu.com/bradleystokejournal/docs/bsj_2016-10_issuu
Well done to both William and Esme on your achievements - Abbeywood is very proud of you!
Alisha Edwards (10G) has been invited to
represent her dance school at the freestyle
Wessex’s Championships this month. Alisha has
been learning over 10 dances since July to
perform them all individually and within groups
at this event. Dancers will be travelling from
across England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and
Norway to compete.
Good luck to Alisha and we look
forward to hearing all about the
Championships.
After entering into a competition in the
summer, Ben Shadbolt (10B) has been lucky
enough to be selected to take part in the centre
circle ceremony at a UEFA Champions League
Match at Leicester City Stadium.
An amazing experience for Ben which we look
forward to hearing all about.
“My Audition”………………… by Cerys Hilton 9O
‘I am a member of the Bristol Old Vic Young Company which involves attending workshops at the Old Vic every
Monday evening; At the start of Year 9 I joined the Young Vic Company where I saw a leaflet for 45 actors to be
part of the UK premiere of “The Record”, a play by the award-winning New York Theatre company 600
HIGHWAYMEN. “The Record”, is to be performed at the Bristol Old Vic as part of the IBT17 festival. A few days
after registering I got an email to audition on Friday 30 September at the Trinity Centre in Bristol. At the
audition, we were put into groups of 15 ranging from 8 years of age to 80. In smaller groups of 5 we had to do a
selection of movements in different styles as directed by the theatre company. To finish, we completed a
number based activity to confirm our names.
Later that night I received a call back asking me to go for a second audition the next day. There were 60 people
from the original 200 at this audition. We did similar activities but in small groups and we were told who would
make it later that week to the final 45. Three days later I found out I was one of the final
45! I thoroughly enjoyed the audition and can’t wait to perform in the new year.’
Well done Cerys - an amazing achievement!
So note down the dates for this year!
At Abbeywood, we want to challenge our students to explore all they are
able to do. Many of our students lack confidence and we need to try and
encourage their resilience to show them all the wonders they are capable
of. The UK Maths Challenge* has shown that Abbeywood students are
extremely talented in maths. Last year’s results were astonishing,
including several students going to the follow up rounds in all age stages!
We hope this achievement will help them and their peers give maths a try,
work hard and aim for gold.
Senior Challenge (Y12 – Y13): Tuesday 8 November 2016
Intermediate Challenge (Y9 – Y11): Thursday 2 February 2017
Junior Challenge (Y7 – Y8): Thursday 27 April 2017
Team challenge (Y8 – Y9): Date tbc
*The UK Maths Challenges are lively, intriguing multiple choice question papers, which are designed
to stimulate interest in maths in pupils. The three levels (Junior, Intermediate and Senior) cover the
secondary school range 11-18 and together they attract over 600,000 entries from over 4,000 schools
and colleges.
To prepare for the new GCSE, Abbeywood Community School has invested in a fantastic resource for
independent home learning, particularly great for Maths preparation. The PIXL Maths App is a one
stop shop of challenges, revision “therapy” videos and graded exam questions. It really is a must for
all Smartphones, Tablets and Laptops! Watch your children access all their revision at the touch of a
button - identifying strengths and weaknesses as they go - maybe even work alongside them to really
push for the very best grades at the end of Year 11.
Keeping your child safe online!
Many of our students have online accounts (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), however we notice that some
are using false names. Whilst we understand that this is commonplace and is often used innocently,
we encourage parents to monitor their child’s online activity regularly to ensure that the content/
messages are appropriate. We teach e-safety as a part of our curriculum to students, however as
parents it can be difficult to keep up-to-date with the latest online craze!
If you would like to find out more, please look at the
www.thinkuknow.co.uk website which has a guide to safe surfing and
internet safety, and is run by CEOPS. If you would be interested in an
e-safety talk, please contact school via email info@abbeywoodschool.com
and we will arrange a parent session.
Literacy: How you can support your child at home
As we come to the end of a very busy first term, many parents may be thinking about
ways they can help their child with their learning. Several parents have asked me for
book recommendations and websites that can offer suggestions for support in literacy
and there are some great links below for you to find out more! Do check out our
website, too, where you will find recommended reading lists for all year groups. These
are also available in our library.
If you are a parent of a year 7 or 8 student, talk to them about their reading for the Accelerated Reader
programme. They have a login that allows them to take quick quizzes on the books they read, testing their
comprehension skills. If you have any questions about this, don’t hesitate to contact their English or Literacy
teacher (we run the AR programme through a fortnightly Literacy lesson).
Top tips
1. Celebrate all kinds of reading – text messages, reading ingredients, websites, social networks and
magazines - as well as more formal reading such as novels. Reading all kinds of texts will benefit your
child.
2. Support your child with homework or extended summer projects – little and often may be easier to
encourage and manage!
3. Download free books and more on a Kindle or iBooks app on your personal device. Some children prefer
to read on a screen.
4. Use your local library – students from ACS have helped to stock and design a special Young Adult section
at Filton Library that is jam-packed with books that have been recommended by keen readers at our own
school.
5. Some students don’t think they like reading, but this is often because they haven’t found a subject they
love to read about. It can help to talk about film genres they enjoy as a way in; often there are books that
will appeal as a result of this conversation!
6. Try to have a newspaper or magazine in the house that might appeal to your son/daughter.
7. Use technology to engage your child – there are many Apple and Android apps available for personal
devices that support literacy skills in dynamic ways, such as Teleprompter¸ which allows users to compose
scripts and read from a screen like a newsreader, Spelling Test, Learn English Grammar UK, Word Search,
Wattpad (free books and eBooks), and newspaper websites such as The Guardian have free apps that
allow access to all their online content. Goodreads offers recommendations for great books and Story
Creator allows users to make up their own stories online, complete with a function to add photos or
pictures. There are thousands of possibilities.
8. Read yourself. Research shows that children will read more when their parents do.
9. Don’t use reading/homework as punishment! Encourage a full range of activities.
10. Try paired reading in just ten minutes a day – see the link:
Abbeywood PE Faculty
Year 10 5 A Side House Tournament
All of Year 10 are timetabled for PE at the same time for one of their four
lessons. This has been a great opportunity to do house matches. In the boys
matches It allowed us to have A and B matches so there was a 100%
participation of all boys which is brilliant.
There was a dramatic final that was 2 all in normal time
which then went to penalties. Dexter Dawes had his penalty
saved by Suhayb Sharif which meant Apollo won the final
against Hermes!
Round 2 ESFA under 14s Girls Football - vs Rednock School
On Tuesday 11 October the girls under 14s football team played against Rednock in round two of the National Cup.
A fantastic display of team work and some tremendous football played. Abbeywood passed the ball effectively, kept
their composure and finished well. 6 goals each from Daisy Ackerman and Zoe Jones and 4 goals from Kiera Beck
produced a convincing win. Final score 16-3 to Abbeywood. On to round 3!
Year 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 Netball vs Hanham Woods
The netball club was out in force on 11 October with all four teams playing in their first home match against the
historically dominant Hanham Woods. The away teams showed great skill and speed in all games and dominated.
Our girls however kept their heads up and competed till the very end. Finals scores were KS4 - Abbeywood 22,
Hanham 31; Y9-Abbeywood 0, Hanham 39; Y8-Abbeywood 0, Hanham 31; Y7 Abbeywood 1, Hanham 25. Players of
the match went to Neve Shorter (Y11), Manasi Kalgoankar (Y9), Jennifer Crossley (Y8) and Holly Edwards (Y7).
Despite the score lines the girls have not given up and have all taken away points to work on for next week’s game
against Sir Bernard Lovell School.
Wednesday 19 October: Netball Yr7, 8, 9 & U16 - Sir Bernard Lovell School
Wednesday 2 November: Netball Yr 7, 8, 9 & U16 - venue tbc
Year 7 Rugby
Year 7 did fantastically well at the castle tournament.
They played collectively as a team, tackled well and
scored lots of trys!
Well done !
