Community News……………………….….19
From the first day I started working as a teacher I
was blown away by the amazing positivity of staff
and students, the incredible range of opportunities
available and the sense that something really
important is taking place almost every second of
every day —I have never lost those views and this
past few weeks reminds me just what a truly
magical place Abbeywood Community School is.
Over the past few weeks we have; sent off and welcomed home our school ski
trip to Austria, where our students were described by the ski company as
“great ambassadors for Abbeywood, Bristol and Britain”, taken part in the
national Safer Internet Day—where students participated in a wide range of
informative activities aimed at developing their understanding of keeping safe
online and being mindful of the potential dangers of posting pictures via social
media. Additionally, all Year 8 students participated in a brilliant RAISE Day this
week, focused on learning about crime, justice and the realities of life in prison.
Abbeywood was also superbly represented at the Bristol Arts Exhibition where
Connor Price and Jack Windows took individual prizes for their stunning artwork.
The whole school has also taken part in our first ever Abbeywood House Day where we all got stuck into a
whole host of fun to promote our new House system. Finally, we also hosted both a brilliant Harry Potter charity
event for Year 5 and 6 students, as well as the Youth Dance Festival —to name but a few!
This term we continue to run over 40 different after-school clubs and activities for our students to take part in, and
last term over 90% of Year 7 students participated in two or more after-school clubs each week. We also continue to
celebrate the many sporting, personal and academic achievements of our students through the incredible range of
recipients of the weekly Headteacher’s Award. Special mention must also go to Morgan Baber in Year 9 for her
continued gymnastics successes, and also to Molly James in Year 9 for being picked to represent England in U15
basketball—huge congratulations to them both.
To underline that all this positivity, energy and opportunity is a normal part of life at Abbeywood Community
School—over the next few weeks we have much more to look forward to including, RAISE Days for Years 9 and Year
10, where Year 10 students will be interviewed by a multitude of local employers as part of their careers education,
a range of fun activities as part of Sport Relief and Red Nose Day celebrations, and the fantastic World Book Day on
2 March!
The remarkable range and depth of opportunities for our students at Abbeywood Community School would not be
possible without the tireless dedication of our teaching and support staff—who are amazingly talented and
incredibly generous with their time in equal measure. On behalf of our entire school community I would like to
thank all our wonderful staff for making sure Abbeywood Community School is a vibrant, enjoyable and exciting
place to develop personal talents and interests, thrive and learn together.
Press and Media Interest
You may have read our communication earlier this week about the financial pressures faced by our
schools for 2017 and beyond, ones that are shared by the vast majority of secondary schools in South
Gloucestershire and elsewhere in the country.
The original update is here alongside an update and a template letter that we asked parents to share with
our MP, Jack Lopresti at jack.lopresti.mp@parliament.uk.
Our communication has received a significant amount of press coverage. As with any contentious issue,
the information reported has ranged from sensationalist and inaccurate to balanced and fair. Thank you
to all our parents who have been in touch and the overwhelming support for our staff and students.
Please refer to this website for updates as unfortunately media reporting is not always accurate.
BBC news has covered the story. Steve Moir, Headteacher at BSCS, has been interviewed along with
some parents and students. This was covered on Points West on Thursday 23 February 2017.
We will shortly be sharing an online petition that voices our concerns over the funding of South
Gloucestershire schools for 2017 and beyond with the aim of raising awareness and encouraging a
resolution for the young people in our care. We would be grateful for your support.
In the meantime please be assured that our focus remains on providing the very best education for all the
young people within The Olympus Academy Trust. Our schools are thriving, purposeful places to learn
and we fully expect this to continue for the long-term.
With best wishes
Dave Baker
Molly James Flying High
14 Year old Molly James (9R) has recently made huge strides in her Basketball
development with two big call ups!
Last week Molly was informed that after a successful Christmas Basketball Camp
with the National Team, she has been invited to a 3 day Camp in Manchester at
Easter as part of a 12 strong England Under 15 Team. During this camp Molly will
play 2 International games against Scotland as preparation to the team travelling
to Denmark in June for more International action.
This is great for Molly who will get her first International caps and will hopefully impress further with selection to
Denmark on the horizon.
Molly has also recently made another big step as she was selected to play for the Bristol Academy Flyers women’s
team in Division I of the National League. Molly signed for the team two weeks ago after training with the
team as preparation for her Christmas England Camp. Not only did she make the team but she also scored her
first points in senior basketball as the Flyers defeated Essex Blades at the WISE Arena over the weekend.
In the space of a few months Molly has not only been selected to play in the England Squad and get
International Caps as part of the England U15 Team but she has also made the jump to senior Basketball in one
of the Country’s elite women’s division.
It’s been an amazing journey so far with plenty more to come. Congratulations Molly!
Congratulations to Alex Bishop 8R who won the Libraries' ‘ZOO-WEE-MAMA’
competition with his original comic strip
Alex is now the owner of a brand new
‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Do-it-yourself
book’. Look out for a new competition
coming soon…...
Congratulations Alex!
Congratulations to Morgan Baber - 9Y (& partner)
who not only won GOLD in the 'Scottish Invitational
Comp' in January but also came home with another
GOLD at a recent competition at her home club at
'Yate International Gymnastics Centre', despite being
unwell in the days leading up to it.
We are all very proud of Morgan and her partner!
They both have an extremely exciting future in
Acrobatic Gymnastics and we will keep you updated
with their progress!
Magical Harry Potter Fundraising Event
On Thursday 2 February, The ACS Fundraising Club held a Harry Potter Night for Y5’s and Y6’s from the local
primary schools. It was a great success and we raised approximately £150. The stalls included a Fantastic Beast
Hunt, Wands for Sale, Potion Making and Quidditch Matches. There was also a Harry Potter film playing in the hall
and refreshments were available for everyone. A quote from the night from a Year 6 student at St Michaels “I like
the night, it’s fun and family-friendly. The quidditch match was very enjoyable and fun for all ages. I would
definitely come again. The students do very well organising the stalls and making everyone feel involved. I’ve really
enjoyed the night.” We spent around six weeks preparing for the night and we are pleased that it was so
successful. Our hopes for our next event are high as this one went so well.
To all who came, thank you very much for your
generosity!
Thanks again,
and Rachel Taylor 7O
Collecting your child after school by car
While we fully appreciate that we all would like to drop off and collect our
children from the ‘front door’ of school we also know this is not practical.
Abbeywood students are allowed to be dropped off by car directly outside
the main school building in the morning only as this is a quick drop off and does not block up our small car
park. However, parents and carers are reminded that if they wish to collect their children by car after school
they should do so from the overspill car park just off New Road and not from the small car park. The number of
cars currently collecting students after school from the small car park directly outside the main school building
is causing it to get so congested that emergency vehicles would not be able to access the site if needed. A
small number of students who have particular special needs are permitted to be collected by car directly
outside school and these individuals have a permit to do so. Can we take this opportunity to remind all drivers
accessing our site that the speed limit of 5mph applies. The South Gloucestershire Civil Enforcement Service
have also asked us to remind anyone collecting students from school not to park on the double yellow lines on
New Road. Drivers are permitted to drop off passengers on a double or single yellow line but cannot park up
and wait on them. South Gloucestershire Civil Enforcement Service have informed us that they intend to include
New Road in their Civil Enforcement Officers’ foot patrol route from now on.
Many thanks for your cooperation with this matter.
Career Pathways
As Year 9 make their GCSE choices and are thinking about their pathway choices, a group of Year
9 students embarked on a quest to find out more about teachers at Abbeywood and their own
choices, career paths and aspirations! This is what they discovered…
Teacher:
Mr Howe
Teacher:
Miss Gilmore
What did you want to do when you were
younger:
For most of secondary school I wanted to be a
fighter pilot in the RAF.
What subjects did you do at GCSE?
English Language, English Literature, Maths,
Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Geography, History, Computing, German, Art &
Design, Latin.
What did you do after your GCSEs?
A Levels – Geography, Physics, Psychology,
Computing.
Is there anything you regret doing in your
school life?
I wish I had learned to revise properly earlier in
my life. I didn’t learn to revise until I was at
university.
What do you enjoy about teaching?
Making a positive difference to students’ lives. I
love ‘my’ subject (Geography) and hugely enjoy
getting it across and seeing others develop an
enthusiasm for it.
What did you want to do when you were
younger:
I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, all I
knew was that I loved sport!
What choices did you make for GCSE and why?
PE, French, German & History. I loved all of
these subjects and as I didn’t know what I
wanted to do, thought the broad scheme of
choices would help me choose.
What did you do after your GCSEs?
A Levels at 6th Form in the same School.
Is there anything you regret doing in your
school life?
I regret not putting my mindset into Year 10
where I drifted off and didn’t concentrate.
What do you enjoy about teaching?
I love teaching - the best job ever! I love the
students and everything about the job!
What else would you like to achieve in the
future?
Become a better teacher and improve - there is
always room for improvement!
What Sports did you do?
I did Karate until I was 18 - I was 2 belts away
from a Black belt - I regret giving it up.
Teacher:
Mr Owen
Teacher:
Mr Dominguez
What did you want to do when you were
younger:
Pilot – Loved to travel, see the world and use my
language skills.
What choices did you make for GCSE?
Triple Science, French, Geography, ICT and
History.
What did you do after your GCSEs?
Studied A-Levels at school – Physics, History,
French and Geography. Went to university to
study French and Geography.
Is there anything you regret doing in your school
life?
Not travelling enough! However, I’m trying to fix
that!
What do you enjoy about teaching?
It may be small things, but every day is different. I
enjoy seeing students access something that they
otherwise think they can’t do or it’s too difficult for
them. Also, I really enjoy educating students about
possibilities that are out there especially when
they thrive in languages.
What else would you like to achieve in the
future?
I am also in the Army Reserves and I would like to
further my career there too, maybe become a
Captain one day!
I would also like to develop my Italian and Russian
so I can speak them fluently.
What did you want to do when you were
younger:
I really didn’t know what to do until I was about
17. I knew I liked Science and Maths very much so
an Engineer seemed like a good option, but when I
was 17 I realised I really wanted to become a
teacher one day.
What choices did you make for GCSE?
Because I’m from Spain I didn’t have to do GCSE,
but in its equivalent I chose Triple Science,
Philosophy and Latin.
What did you do after your GCSEs?
The Spanish equivalent of A Levels, very focused on
Science but also with some Literature and History.
Is there anything you regret doing in your school
life?
Not at all. I don’t regret anything because the
choices I’ve made in life have been a consequence
of the information and feelings I had when I made
the choice, so they were all right!
What do you enjoy about teaching?
Having contact with young people every day and
trying to give them the best education I can so that
they have as many options to choose as they want.
A good education gives you the freedom of choice.
What else would you like to achieve in the
future?
I just want to keep improving myself every day to
try and achieve the best version of me.
A reminder for students
Have you checked? ...
Friday 10 March
Students and staff will be travelling around the
country and over the sea all without leaving our
school Atrium. Participants will see how far they
can travel as a group during a school day. To add to
the fun we will run a competition to see which
house group can rack up the most miles both on
land and over sea.
Students that have been given an After School
Detention will no longer receive a reminder. They
will be responsible for checking the detention lists
which are displayed at the end of the day at all
student exits.
Parents will be notified by text or email for same
day detentions.
During the February holiday, 22 students from Years 8 to 11 along with Miss Gilmore, Mr Doyle and
Miss Mahoney embarked on a 24 hour bus journey to Austria for the Abbeywood biennial Ski trip.
The coach left school on Friday 10 February and even though there was a delay due to the M25
traffic, the students kept in good spirits throughout the coach journey arriving early the next evening.
The following day students were split into ski and snowboard ability groups and then had four hours
a day with instructors to improve their skills over the next six days.
For some students who had been on the previous trips they were quickly spending their days
travelling all over the slopes of Obertauern and trying to complete the 'Seven Peaks' which are
famous in Austria and taking on the steep black runs. For the intermediates who had also skied
before they looked at improving their parallel turns and moving from the easier blue runs to the
intermediate red runs.
The hardest challenge of the week was for the new skiers and snowboarders who for most had to
learn all the skills from scratch. The resilience of the students however was incredible and everyone
could ski and snowboard by the end of the week. They spent their first few days going up and down
the small practice slopes learning how to snow plough and do the majority without ski poles to
improve their balance. For some they even made it onto one of the seven peaks by the end of the
week.
The snowboards also started on the beginners slope but quickly progressed onto the mountain
tackling blue, red and black runs! By the end of the week they had also started working on jumps and
spins in the fun park.
The staff on the trip would like to say how proud they were of every student. The journey and
intensive lessons challenged everyone but they all were resilient and engaged throughout the week
and most importantly a good time was had by everyone.
Look out for news about the 2019 ski trip coming soon!
'Don’t bare then share' is the advice for young
people on Safer Internet Day
The Police are advising not to 'bare then share' this Safer Internet Day. Many young people see
‘sexting’ (the sharing of indecent images, videos or other sexual content) as a normal part of life but it is against
the law and can have unintended consequences.
During this Safer Internet Week, the Police are highlighting the potential pitfalls of sexting - with the call to
action of ‘Don’t bare then share’.
A recent survey by the NSPCC shows around 1 in 7 young people have taken a semi-naked or naked picture of
themselves and over half then shared this with someone else. It is often considered harmless but can lead to
children being exploited, bullied and blackmailed.
‘Don’t bare then share’ is a story about the loss of control after a nude selfie is taken and shared. It will
exclusively launch on Snapchat to reach young people and will roll out on other channels to inform parents/
carers about the issues and signpost to advice. Detective Chief Superintendent Geoff Wessell said:
“Sexting is a growing concern so we are using Safer Internet Day to remind young people that it is against the
law and there can be unintended consequences of taking and sharing explicit pictures.
There is sometimes a reluctance to report sexting out of concern that it could lead to a criminal record. This is
only the case if there is exploitation, coercion or if adults are involved in taking or sharing the images.
Educating and supporting young people is at the forefront of all we do and we are taking steps to ensure no
young person is unnecessarily criminalised. We are asking parents to talk to their children about sexting by
providing information and signposting to great resources to help young people stay safe.”
On World Book Day students and staff will discover their Roald
Dahl book name. The library will be running a competition
(closing date 30 March) to write a short story, no more than 366
words, starring their Roald Dahl character. The winning student
will receive a £5 Amazon gift voucher.
Ms Furleger Favourite book: The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
Because….. this book is very thought-provoking as it has 3 strands to it – a love story, a plot related to WW2
and the Holocaust and a theme of illiteracy. It’s very clever and the fact it is based within a context that
occurred makes it even more interesting.
Mr Jones
Favourite book: Down and Out In Paris and London by George Orwell
Because….. A book I was given to read when I first started out as a Chef. The story of a writer working in
Restaurants in Paris then moving to London and living as a tramp an amazing account of living in society
and poverty. The writing is way beyond its time and is a classic!!
Mr Owen
Favourite book: Dan Brown’s Inferno
Because….. It combines history, languages and action in a story that takes place in Florence in Italy, a place
where I love and have visited many times! It’s well-written and uses historical facts and information to
accompany a thrilling storyline.
“Pink Mist” Show Review
On Tuesday, 24 January, a group of students went to see the play “Pink Mist” at the Bristol Old Vic.
“Pink Mist”, written by the Welsh poet Owen Sheers, tells the story of three young Bristol Men who join
the Army and are sent on a tour of Afghanistan. The things that they witness and the things that happen
to them have a profound effect on them and their families and the play explores the causes and
consequences of war, for civilians and members of the Armed Forces, in a powerful way.
The play was performed by just six actors and uses a very physical style of acting, include lots of mime,
narration, choreography and choric group performance. It was very useful for the Year 10 GCSE Drama
students to experience this type of stylised performance as they begin to prepare for their Component
1 Devising Unit, which is 20% of their total examination piece.
There is a really quick turn around for our final set of Complimentary tickets, which are for the
performance of “Junkyard” on Tuesday, 28 February, starting at 7.30 pm. “Junkyard” is a musical which
tells the story of the birth of the Adventure Playground -the “Vench”- in Lockleaze. Letters will be given
to Y9 and Y10 students this week.
