Photography Exhibition of Two Iconic Gay Parties

Exhibition runs November 5, - December 5, 2016 at Ted Casablanca Gallery

Palm Springs Pride.”
Ted Casablanca Gallery, located in
downtown Palm Springs, announced
that it will offer a new Michael
Childers photography exhibition
entitled “Flaming Creatures.” The
exhibition features never-beforeseen
photographs taken at a drag
ball and art gallery in Los Angeles in
1974 and during the Palm Springs
White Party in 2002. The exhibition
runs November 5 – December 5,
2016. An opening reception honoring
the artist will be held at the gallery,
located at 388 N. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, on Saturday, November
5 from 5 – 8 p.m. as a part of the Palm Springs Pride festivities.
“Flaming Creatures” depicts ironic, witty, vibrant, and sometimes bizarre
images of the surreal attendees of two wildly different events. The first
event, a drag ball, was held in Los Angeles in 1974, and features a wide
assortment of the men and women in attendance, many of whom were
Arts and Motion Pictures Academy members. Their over-the-top, original
costumes were astonishing, humorous, and evoke a sensual feeling.
Childers was hired to shoot this drag ball for the Italian men’s Vogue
magazine L’Uomo Vogue, but the images have never been displayed in a
gallery setting before. The second series, taken during the Palm Springs
White Party in 2002, features fit men in revealing attire. In both cases,
subjects of the events were allowed to pose however they wished, resulting
in fresh and original images.
“Michael Childers is one of the most iconic photographers of our time,
so I was thrilled to put together this show,“ said Ted Casablanca Gallery
curator Bruce Bibby. “The staging and lighting of these images is reminiscent
of something you might see from Nan Goldin or Diane Arbus.
The works evoke a range of complex emotions, and capture two unique
moments in time and the people who made those moments possible.”
About Michael Childers
Michael Childers is a photographer, producer, lecturer and author. He was
a founding photographer for Andy Warhol’s Interview and After Dark magazines.
Childers photographed more than 200 magazine covers, including
GQ, New York, TV Guide, Esquire, Los Angeles, Elle, Paris Match, Life,
London Sunday Times Magazine, and both English and Italian Vogue. He
created more than 150 album covers and film posters for major motion
picture studios and worked as a special photographer on dozens of films,
including Grease, Marathon Man, The Year of Living Dangerously, Coal
Miner’s Daughter, Pennies from Heaven, The Terminator, Hammett, Torch
Song Trilogy, Endless Love, The Champ, and Oceans 12.
